As we enter another year of instability and uncertainty, it behoves all organisations to keep one eye on the future for successful innovation and evolution. But shifting out of survival mode to examine the long game remains a challenge for many. Horizon scanning and scenario planning to mitigate risk and leverage opportunity ought to be in every business strategist's toolkit. However, all too often boards and senior leadership teams are stressed and overwhelmed by firefighting and conflicting priorities. What are the benefits of future-gazing? In this episode, Dom, Jen and Cat chat with IoIC festival keynote speaker Rohit Talwar. They explore some underlying trends that are set to reshape business in 2025 and look at how can internal communicators help their organisations become more future-ready. Takeaways Futurists explore trends and shifts rather than predict the future. Organisations need to develop agile and adaptive mindsets. AI is a significant force that organisations must engage with. Large corporations often struggle with transformation due to their size and conservatism. The SME community is more focused on future-proofing their operations. Cultural shifts in attitudes towards work are changing organisational dynamics. The rise of generative AI is reshaping how businesses operate. Effective communication is crucial for fostering a learning culture. Organisations must prepare for uncharted territories and unknown unknowns. Budget constraints may impact internal communication and training initiatives. The demand for GenAIi prompts is increasing among professionals. Organisations must navigate the triangle of human challenges, tech opportunities, and financial pressures. Forming alliances with key stakeholders is essential for internal communicators. Spotting and promoting mindset shifts can drive innovation. Internal communicators should connect employees with organisational changes and external trends. Continuous learning is vital for personal and organisational growth. No one cares more about your future than you do. Learning helps combat fear and confusion in a complex world. Internal communication must adapt to the changing landscape of work. Highlighting successful examples of innovation can inspire others. Notes: Define yourself… What is your one sentence? Jason's is “I tell stories in my own voice.” That's what he does as the editor-in-chief of Entrepreneur magazine. That's what he does when he writes books. Records podcasts… Everything. What is your one sentence? What do you do? How to lead through change – Remember... You've had time to think about it prior to the meeting, they haven't. Show some grace. Communicate why the change is happening and how it impacts them. And… “People hate new things, but they love better versions of old things.” People hate loss. Remind them of what's staying the same, but getting better. In 1348, The Bubonic Plague happened... What occurred as a result? 60% of Europeans died. It led to an opportunity for employment. Prior to that, there were the rich and the poor. The rich had the poor work for them, but did not pay them money. "If a city isn't growing, it's dying. The same is true for people." In your career, "Don't ask for the opportunity... BE the opportunity." The Four Distinct Phases: Panic Adaptation New Normal Wouldn't Go Back The first thing a person should do when navigating change is to identify the thing about themself that is not going to change. This is tough because we naturally identify with the output of our work. If somebody at a party asks you what you do, you're either going to tell them your job title, your role, the way in which you do your work, or the thing that you create. And that's natural—it's a good way to understand ourselves. "We are programmed for loss aversion." "Build a bridge of familiarity from them to you." "That's something Ryan Reynolds told me. Ryan is an actor who also started an extremely successful advertising agency called Maximum Effort. He also owns Aviation Gin and Mint Mobile. Ryan told me that the thing that distinguishes people is not whether they're good at something at the beginning (because nobody will be good at something at the beginning), but rather whether someone can tolerate the natural state of being bad at the beginning. When trying something new, there cannot be an expectation of mastery from the start. "Can you tolerate being bad long enough to be good?" In front of you are two sets of opportunities. Opportunity Set A is everything that is asked of you, for instance showing up at your job, things your boss needs done, etc. It is necessary to do a good job at Opportunity Set A. Opportunity set B is everything that is available for you to do that nobody is asking you to do. This could also be at your job, but it could also be something outside of work like taking a class to learn a new skill. With every single thing you do, ask What is it for? This forces you to make sure that the things that you do have a valuable outcome. It's okay if that outcome looks strange, or if that outcome will come after some time working towards it. We want to know which things we should devote our time and energy to, and we want to understand how to maximize opportunities. Answering What is it for? clarifies that. So, What is it for? Content now is for relationships. People will trust you and like you because of your content. You build a relationship with people when you put something out into the world. Life/Career advice: Try, quit, and learn Life is a series of experiments

What does collaboration in business mean in the 21st century? Where are the transformative ideas of our age coming from? What role does education play in the future economy? And will tech save us? In this week's 5 Big Questions interview we talk to futurist, author and CEO of Fast Future ROHIT TALWAR Twitter: @fastfuture Known for: CEO - Fast Future Author - The Future of Business Author - Beyond Genuine Stupidity: Ensuring AI Serves Humanity Author - The Future Reinvented: Reimagining Life, Society & Business Author - A Very Human Future: Enriching Humanity in a Digitized World The Big 5 Questions: How do you measure the impact of what you do? How should people/businesses be preparing for the future? How do we build the workforce we need for that future? How do you use creativity to solve problems? How do you collaborate? Key quotes: “Let's identify some of the forces, the ideas, the very weak signals we're seeing of things that might change, and let's explore how they might come together.” “We're trying to take them on a journey to stimulate their thinking about how we prepare for a range of possibilities, where might the gaps and opportunities be.” “Workforces aren't stupid, they understand the world is changing, they understand technology is going to transform jobs, they just want their employers to be straight with them.” “Schools and universities aren't used much in the evenings. There are an awful lot of people who'd like to do their learning between 8pm and 8am. The facilities are almost empty then, unused. We also have a lot of people in society who have the skills, the knowhow, the practical experience to do the delivery of that training.” “There's no greater priority in society than government fully funding education to create the workforce of the future and therefore to create the revenue streams back into government through taxation.” ”We need [an] eco-system of partners that can be our radar.” Useful links: Fast Future Publishing // fastfuture.com Rohit Talwar at Fast Future // fastfuture.com/team/rohit-talwar/ Aftershocks And Opportunities 2: Navigating The Next Horizon collaborative book (Amazon link) // amazon.co.uk/Aftershocks-Opportunities-Navigating-Next-Horizon/dp/1838195505 This episode was recorded in January 2022 Interviewer: Richard Freeman for always possible Editor: CJ Thorpe-Tracey for Lo Fi Arts

More now than ever we require a future perspective, which can take our discussions beyond current issues such as lockdown policies, social distancing, increasing and decreasing COVID-19 numbers, getting children back to school and everything else that occupies our minds daily. In this episode, we explore the visions of some great minds. We ask if their visions are generally optimistic, seeing the pandemic as a once in a generation opportunity for positive change. Or do they believe we still have a long bumpy road ahead of us? With the co-author and one contributor, of the book: Aftershocks and Opportunities – Scenarios for a Post-Pandemic Future, we discuss some of the opinions of the noted leaders that contributed to the book. While we try to imagine what our lives will look like ten months or even ten years from now.

We kick off our 5th season with Rohit Talwar, the CEO of Fast Future, a UK based research and insights business that specializes in the fields of futures and foresight. In this dialogue, Rohit and Vanessa discuss the implications of the groundbreaking events that have occurred in the first half of 2020. In Rohit's words: "This has been quite a good rehearsal for how we prepare better for the future. Whether it's climate change, collapse of financial markets, radical breakthroughs in science and technology- we should now be more open to those things and more willing to think the unthinkable...Hopefully we broaden our lens, and start moving from talking about people being in positions of power to owning the fact that they're in positions of responsibility, walking the corridors of responsibility, and their real job is to exercise that responsibility to create a fairer, more inclusive, and more sustainable world for all."

Only 8 percent of CPAs believe that the profession is future ready, according to CPA.com’s study Welcome to the Fast Future. This is a rather concerning statistic because the future is coming, and it might be closer than you think. Bill Sheridan, Chief Communication Officer at the MACPA, is on the front lines trying to prepare CPAs for the future, and he recently published a new white paper that every CPA should read: Human Work in the Ages of Machines: Five Steps for Building a Future-Ready Finance Team. Basically, the paper asks what happens when more and more of the things that accounting and finance professionals are trained to do are being done by machines, and what does that mean for our profession? Because these technological changes are going to happen whether we like it or not, there's nothing we can do except learn how to do the things that machines can't do and work with them (or go out of business). We have to go beyond being just number crunchers and become number interpreters; we have to be able to understand what we're viewing and become better communicators. The futurist Peter Sheehan puts this another way: we've entered an age when humans should only do work that only humans can do, and everything else is going to be automated. This means that CPAs will need a new set of eight core skills, if they want to remain relevant going forward: Communication Leadership Critical thinking and problem solving Anticipating and serving evolving needs Synthesizing intelligence to insight, or providing the insight to the numbers Integration and collaboration Tech savvy and the ability to analyze data Functional and domain expertise. 6/8 of these skills were also identified in the Horizons 2025 project. We tend to ignore stuff like that until it's almost too late – until the stuff that is on the horizon suddenly gets closer and is threatening to steamroll us. We waited, and now it’s crunch time. Bill doesn’t believe that the problem with CPAs is that we’re too introverted to learn these soft skills. Bill believes the big problem holding us back is that accounting is a rear-facing profession. We've been trained to look in the rearview mirror, and so that's what we've done for decades and decades. Now we're at a point where we have to start looking through the windshield a little bit more and learn how to become a more forward-facing profession, which means figuring out what we need to do to stay relevant tomorrow rather than just accounting for what happened yesterday. Bill developed the Five C’s for staying relevant through the change: Context - What are the big changes going on around us? There’s three hard trends converging: technological advances, changing demographics, and new legislation. Certainty - What can we be certain will happen? The futurist Daniel Burrus says your odds of succeeding go up and the risk of failing goes down, when you start basing your strategy around things that you know are going to happen. Capacity - It’s going to take time for us to learn how to become future ready, and we're all busier than ever before. But we make time for the things that are important to us. Competencies - As discussed previously, we're going to have to learn an entirely new set of skills. Key among them is anticipation: learning how to spot future trends before they happen and position our organizations to take advantage of them, before the competition, is actually a skill that you can learn. Core Values - In a world where everything seems to be changing around us, it's really kind of comforting to know that there are some things that should never change: our core values. The core purpose of this profession, as established by Vision Project, is to make sense of a changing and complex world. How to Take Your First Steps Towards the Future Trying to become future ready all at once is overwhelming, and more or less impossible. However, now is a great time to start building future-ready habits. Bill suggests you start with a simple exercise: schedule one hour a week for yourself, and actually put it in your calendar. During that hour, do something like read a book that will help you prepare for the future, or ask your team what productivity apps they like and start implementing them. In the resources below, you will find a number of valuable books and resources to learn from during your weekly time block, including Human Work in the Ages of Machines. Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing everything. It is not only changing the way we go about our personal lives but it is also it is changing the future of business. It's predictive behaviors are forcasting trends for many companies, AI is taking over mundane tasks that waste time and money and it is supporting us in our decision making precesses by providing us with more and more data, while predicting future trends. But AI is also a little bit scary. We very often ask ourselves , What do all these changes mean to future of business? How will jobs change and how will we manage workforces that are half man and half machine? In this episode we will talk about what industries are using AI now, how enterprises can prepare themselves for the changes AI will bring and how small businesses can take advantage of the open sourse AI tools that are available on the internet. Most importantely, we talk about how leaders we prepare themselves for the use of AI in business.

The Moral Maze returns this week to apply its nose to the grindstone and naturally the prospect of work is exercising our collective mind. Ringing, perhaps guiltily in our ears, are the words last week of the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt. Defending the changes to tax credits he said "We want this to be one of the most successful countries in the world in 20, 30, 40 years' time. There's a pretty difficult question that we have to answer, which is essentially: are we going to be a country which is prepared to work hard in the way that Asian economies are prepared to work hard, in the way that Americans are prepared to work hard? And that is about creating a culture where work is at the heart of our success." According to one business expert he may have a point. Rohit Talwar, the chief executive of Fast Future, has said teachers should be preparing schoolchildren for a future that could see them having to work in 40 different jobs until they reach 100. For many this debate isn't just about increasing life expectancy and the cost of state pensions. It's about what kind of contribution society has the right to ask of its citizens and whether the common good demands that we try to meet it. Is work not just financially rewarding, but morally improving? Is self-reliance a virtue that is undervalued in Britain? Or are they both a moral smokescreen for a soulless, utilitarian attitude that sees us all as units of economic production and only values us while we continue to contribute? Isn't the true test of good work not whether it's 'hard' but whether it's fulfilling and productive? Whether we enjoy it? The Moral Maze chaired as ever by Michael Buerk. Michael is a man known for his love of hard work. He says he can watch it for hours. Chaired by Michael Buerk with Melanie Phillips, Michael Portillo, Giles Fraser and Matthew Taylor. Witnesses are Sheila Lawlor, Dan Taylor, Tom Hodgkinson and Lord Maurice Glasman.
