What is Flow? The optimal state of consciousness where human beings perform and feel at their very best. It's a form of energy. I invite you to recall a time when you were so immersed in something you completely lost track of time. Have you noticed when you have been in a state where life's distractions did not bother you or you skipped a meal and didn't even feel hungry or notice it?  Have you been so connected with someone where you were in deep listening and collaboration with hours going by without noticing?  Have you observed your child sit for hours paying video games?Why is this?  There is an opportunity to discipline our unconscious mind by focusing on and even generate thoughts of our own choosing and attach meaning to them at the unconscious level to influence our behavior.  We can create internal representations of events that empower and engage us to create our own reality. Thoughts and Internal representations trigger our emotions and perceptions. This can cause us to allow our thinking to just sort of happen to us. However, we do have the power to control our thinking, lives, behavior, and results.  We open up a new dimension of our thinking and a higher version of ourselves.How can we enter the flow state?It's been scientifically proven to enter the flow state at will whenever you want. Having the attitude is the first step.  It's all about the journey! Essential Elements of the Flow state:Train yourself to experience the flow state at will, operate at flow including mundane tasks or those you may not have enjoyed in the past. ·       Setting a goal that does not risk becoming overwhelming or boring. ·       Breaking goals down to create smaller achievable goals that can be internalized.·       Focus attention on that goal. One at a time.·       Take concentrated action to achieving that goal. (block out distractions) ·       Time will disappear in the flow state·       Get better and better at the things in your life and when you achieve, challenge yourself with the next level.·       Be fully involved in the process.Chaos and Flow:Can you recall a time when you didn't have anywhere to be, clean to-do list, nobody tapping you for something? Once the initial feeling of this freedom passes, entropy brings in chaos. It brings in thoughts from the past (ruminate over) or into the future (worry). Our default setting is peace/calm/happiness, but the system and programming we have been exposed to creates the habitual mind. Chaos and disorder tend to be the operation.   Basically, as soon as we feel like we are ‘happy' we tend to challenge it and quickly shift into chaos. Chaos can exist in perceived order and order can exist in chaos. Typically, we are externally focused to find solutions to get to happiness. Instead, creating rewards within themselves and learning to enjoy the process of whatever it is they are doing can help them create order and get them into a state of flow. Science of Flow:Have you ever heard about the state of a runner's high, getting in the zone (athletes), musicians getting their groove. It's more common than you might think!  You can go in and out of multiple instances of the flow state. Flow is actually in our brains. Marked by a cascade of positive chemicals the brain releases in a way in which we perceive the task internally.  For instance. Mopping the floor sounds boring and mundane, but adding some fun to it can change the internal representation of mopping the floor. How about the process by changing up how you do it so the floor dries faster or inventing a machine in your mind that does the job while pretending to be that machine. Make it fun and challenging in a good way! As chemicals disburse around the body it changes our physiology.  There is still work to be done.One of the inspirations for this episode is helping others to find their flow. It's not easy with so many distractions and overwhelm throughout the day. Our energy can be sporadic and if we depend on caffeine for our energy that can take us up as fast as it can down. Conscious brain is fully engaged at this stage. Conscious incompetent stage. The planning portion, animal impulses, identity. For instance, Writing a book it's the interviews stage. Learning to play guitar, observing what it is you need to learn. This is trying to figure out what it is we need to learn to accomplish our goal or solve the problem. Relaxation – Consciously stop whatever you are doing completely to give your brain a rest. Slow down breathing. Take a nap, light swimming or yoga. Walk, gardening help to clear the mind and allow it to reboot. This is not TV or another activity that keeps your brain in activity. Start to use our intuition and use new ideas to do things.  Flow state - The Body is flooded with feel good chemicals. Flow doesn't happen with some sense of risk.·       Active listening – fully engaged in convo (each group member) - focused in the moment.·       Avoid negativity and arguments (blocks momentum, breaks flow state. Goal is to build momentum by amplifying each other's ideas.1 creative trigger·       Creativity – individual and group. Creativity triggers flow and flow enhances creativity. Linking ideas together to form new ideas. Flow in everyday life:Can initiate in many different contexts and many different situations. Stretch yourself when you have opportunities to get into the state of flow and maintaining it. Peggy Liu is on a mission to spark quantum change towards a better future faster. She joins Barry O'Reilly on this week's show to talk about building momentum for your change movement and how to recognize when the universe is winking at you. From Head to Heart “The power of the intellect,” Peggy tells Barry, “is not matched at all by the magnetism of the heart.” This was an important lesson she had to learn in her own life, so everything she does now is based on tapping into emotional energy. Quantum change - societal change that's the end goal of tornado leadership - starts with mastering emotional energy of movements, and of yourself, she argues. When you build the energetic architecture of a tornado behind the change you want to see, you bring people along with you to a better future faster. Perception Creates Reality The books that inspired her from a young age and the influence of her grandfather, are just two of the “winks from the universe” that told Peggy what path she was meant to take. “...It begins with the perception of yourself and reality,” she remarks. “Perception is what creates reality.” You create the future by visioning that you're already there. The emotion of euphoria of already achieving that future is what magnetizes people subconsciously.  Barry comments on the value of meditation as part of your morning routine. People who are good at leading change usually practice spending time with their thoughts, he says. Peggy shares an example of how practicing meditation helped her craft a speech for the Harvard Model UN. You have to open yourself up to transformational ideas. Allowing yourself freedom to do so is one secret to moving to quantum change. Building Momentum Peggy helps her workshop attendees embody the future they want to see: she leads them into experiencing “the satisfaction of already living in the future that they want to create”. From there, it's easy to reverse engineer the path to that future. Barry agrees that focusing on your vision of ‘better' cuts through the noise and clarifies the creation process. You can choose from an infinite number of realities, Peggy comments, “but to make them come alive, you need to be excited about it and to believe that it already exists to have that satisfaction and euphoria, that love for living that life.” You then become a lightning rod to others aligned with the same vision. Barry remarks that the right people are drawn to you when you share your vision authentically. Friction vs Flow “How successfully you create your reality is all about your level of understanding of friction versus flow,” Peggy emphasizes. Friction comes from trying to force things to go your way, flow is when things align naturally. She shares the secret of flow with listeners: “Your job is to be at the center of the tornado with a vision delivered with love; but you cannot control the tornado's path.” You have to be open to the possibilities the tornado brings. Barry shares an example of flow with founding Nobody Studios. When people are aligned you can create a bigger wave that's like a lighthouse, Peggy adds. Witnessing a suicide in San Francisco clarified what she wanted, to write and go back to PR The Coquí, if you take it outside the island, it often dies Everybody has a different journey I marry my feminist self with my Puerto-Rican self  Rosario Ferré is an inspiration Women in PR is a reflection of the island of PR Machismo is a big issue My power comes from fighting against patriarchal society I was raised in,  as well as the colony of Puerto Rico. PR women are colonized and brutalized too.  The fight for women’s rights goes along with the fight for freedom of our island. Have to negotiate being a powerful, independent woman, with the fact that our identity is tied to a legacy of patriarchy Underground way of using power as a woman by flirting and using your body. How do I take those things that are inherently part of me, that have been used to keep me under control, for my own power? When i first got my period I was told I couldn’t go out and play with the boys anymore I screamed in protest on the page When I write about people, I remind them that every experience has different lenses, and understanding that helps to avoid minimizing others experience or voice. I fought to be a writer, so I’m happy. All the dark sides, all the struggles, I'm ok with it.  It took years. I started at 25, which is late.  While modeling, I did a writing internship on the side, without telling anyone. Slowly started writing and getting things published, and eventually gave up modeling to write full-time. Being far away from home gave me a freedom to work on my dreams secretly, and nurture it, and then tell people when there was something to show How do you nourish yourself? Because I move around a lot, I try to keep something stable with me I always have my books with me I try to read every day I try to write every day, even if it’s something silly, like describing a palm tree. It’s a muscle that needs to be moved every day. And it’s also my therapy I talk to myself, freely I fight for my own little 9 year old self, as my own protector As I age, I stand up for myself more I spend my energy on me first,then others Not selfish, it’s self-care Think about being pregnant with your inner child, about mothering your inner child Liberating ourselves will liberate our children, especially our daughters What was it like coming back to PR fully empowered, living the dreams and life you created for yourself? Once it’s out there and tangible, people accept it, but when you’re working on it, people don’t understand the process. I decided my life was precious, and I wasn’t going to waste it doing something I wasn’t excited about. The next step on the oxygen cascade relates to the composition of alveolar gas, how and why it differs from that in the upper respiratory tract and conducting airways. This composition is determined by the components of the alveolar gas equation. We will examine the AGE in more detail in the next podcast, but for now we can take it to be PAO2 = PiO2 – PaCO2/RQ. In this conceptual model the PiO2 describes the gas entering the alveolus and the second half, the minus PaCO2/RQ, is the net gas leaving the alveolus as oxygen is exchanged with CO2 across the alveolar capillary membrane. The PAO2 is therefore the net alveolar oxygen partial pressure reflecting the interaction of these two processes. The composition of PiO2 we ascertained in the last podcast where humidification and warming of inspiratory gas at 1 atm leaves us with ~150 mmHg of oxygen partial pressure at the carina. Before we analyse the gas in the alveolus we are going to examine how it gets there and the factors that affect pulmonary ventilation and respiratory gas flow. Remember deranged physiology at each transition point on the oxygen cascade may limit the efficacy of oxygen transfer and hence reduce the amount of oxygen delivered to the mitochondria. It is important to understand the ways in which these steps can be disrupted and then systematically consider them all in your assessment of undifferentiated hypoxia. Step 1 is calculating the PiO2, which is FiO2 multiplied by Patm – PH2O. Therefore reduced FiO2, for example when oxygen is consumed in a house fire, or reduced barometric pressure, for example on the peak of mount Everest, are both potential causes in reduced oxygen partial pressure at step 1 and hence are causes of downstream tissue hypoxia. For step 2 a comprehensive understanding of the complex of interrelated factors that affect respiratory gas flow and the provision of oxygen replete inspired gas to the alveolus is crucial core knowledge for a budding critical care physician. To bear the responsibility of mechanically ventilating a patient’s potentially injured lung, it is incumbent on us to be fortified by a high fidelity conceptual model. In this pod we will cover:  Fluids and Flow How can you predict the type of flow in a fluid system? How do you define viscosity? What about the specifics of gas flow in the airways?  What is ventilation? So how does the respiratory apparatus generate a pressure differential?   Raw Science Factoids The total length of the airways running through the two lungs is 1,500 miles or 2,400 kilometers.  The 300-500 million alveoli produce a combined surface area of 50-100 m2, a size roughly equivalent to a tennis court.
