“This place makes me feel human again” is a phrase often heard at Galveston Central Church from people at radically different ends of the socioeconomic spectrum. Being a part of the community grounds people in the truth that they belong to each other. It is not too much to say that this conversation with Rev. Michael Gienger will make you feel human again. We talk with Michael about the church's transformation from transactional ministry to relational ministry, the systemic impact the congregation is having on the city's approach to homelessness, the improbable friendships that are probable at Central, and the fruit of scrappiness that churches are discovering as they try ministry in new ways. What you'll hear from Michael is not just an inspired vision for being the church; you will also experience his authentic love for Jesus and tenacity for the poor that will leave you filled with real hope for what God is doing right now in and through leaders and congregations. Glory be!Quotations“It just became very obvious that with our little teeny tiny church we were never going to be able to do big things that God had in store for us unless we chose to partner with other organizations and utilize their gifts and graces. And our name didn't need to be on everything.” (15:23)“What Central has done really well is fostering improbable friendships. Really what's happening here is we're getting out of a transactional model, a social service model, that's based on hierarchies of the haves and the have nots.” (16:52)“Our kitchen feeds hundreds of people every week, but when you walk into the kitchen I don't think you can tell who's somebody who slept on the beach last night, who's a UTMB student, and who's a congregant that showed up.” (18:49)“We have this wonderful mix of people that are all serving together, that are learning from each other and are starting with what's right with you rather than what's wrong with you. We're not trying to fix people, we're just trying to have this tenacious solidarity with each other.” (19:02)“It's hard to follow Jesus to live the full life that God's called us to if you don't have access to medical care, or if you don't have access to food or whatever else you need.” (22:01)“My role is to help people come along and understand just a different way of being in the world. I'm convinced when people are met with that kind of love, when they get to see their neighbor up close, that's really where transformation happens.” (29:03)“If we're going to be in solidarity with the divine, it means solidarity with the poorest among us because this seems to be where God shows up.” (38:15)We discuss:The journey that led Michael to Galveston Central Church and his innovative approach to ministry. (7:10)The challenges of restarting a church that had been around for 130 years that is averse to change and doesn't have many resources. (9:50)Reopening Galveston Central Church with an eye for who they hadn't been in ministry with before. (12:10)Accomplishing what God had in store for the church required partnering with other organizations and not worrying about who gets credit. (15:19)Michael's innovative approach to ministry, including fostering friendships, moving away from a transactional model, and partnering with other organizations. (16:28)Flattening power dynamics with monthly listening sessions to really understand the community's needs and following their lead to meet those needs. (17:41)Central's innovative clinic where the patients are in charge and the doctors and nurses and social workers and others who come are the guests. (19:40)Starting by caring for the whole person, weaving together their spiritual lives with their “actual” lives as a way to

Not too long ago we recorded episode 78 that we called Questioning our Existence with Andrew Hoffman, Todd Gienger and Dane Lee. It was an episode that Dane had been wanting to make about questioning everything in life as he had struggled to have that kind of conversation with his friends. I told him “I know a couple of guys that would be great for a conversation like that.” It quickly became one of our best episodes and people seemed to really enjoy that conversation. All four of us said after we finished recording that episode that we really enjoyed our conversation and that it went in a completely different direction than we all originally thought that it would. At the end of that episode I mentioned that I wanted to talk on another episode about the energy inside of us. That's what we're here to do today. Some people might call our energy different things. A soul, our life force, the spirit, our conscience, spiritual being, etc. In my opinion it is what powers our human meat vehicle and gives us life on this plane of existence. I was very excited to talk to the guys about what they think of that energy. Unfortunately Andrew was unable to join us today. So it's just three of us. Please enjoy our babbling of things that we cannot explain. I have known Todd for years and he is one of my closest friends. Any time I need to talk he is always there to listen and offer great advice. We have had many great talks over the years on a large range of topics. He is truly one of the most caring and compassionate people I've ever met. Dane Lee is the owner of Elite Recovery Sports Massage and he is what I would call a recovery specialist. Dane is a certified Exercise Physiologist through ACSM and a licensed Massage Therapist in the state of Ohio through Stark State College. Dane has a Bachelors of Science degree from Kent State University in Exercise Science with emphasis on exercise specialist. Dane has experience in massage and experience as a strength coach and as a gymnastic coach. You can find Dane on Facebook at Elite Recovery Sports Massage, on Instagram @Elite_Recovery_LMT and online at https://www.eliterecoverymassage.com/. Do soulmates exist? ♾️ And if they do, would everyone even want to find their soulmate? In part two of my episode with my sister-in-law, Te, we unpack our opinions on the topics of finding that "destined for you" partner. We also talk about tangible marriage rituals to incorporate to keep the spark alive. ✨ Along with psychedelic birth experiences, dolphins, and more crazy ideas, this episode is a fun one.
E2: Applying Jesus to New Vision - Interview with Michael Gienger In this episode, Amy talks with the indomitable Michael Gienger, who is of ferocious mind, passionate heart and delightful disposition about the work his community engages in to embody the love of God to the most vulnerable. Season 2 is intentionally different than Season 1. In this season, we are talking with folks hard at work re-imagining what it means to respond and reform the issues within our society. These conversations are going to help us, in the Church, re-imagine what it means to be a part of the solution - the Kin-Dom Come. Big Takeaways: About Michael The Rev. Michael Gienger serves as a co-pastor of Central United Methodist Church in Galveston, Texas, a hybrid church plant/revitalization. He is an elder in the United Methodist Church, having earned an undergraduate degree in religion from Baylor University and a master of divinity degree from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. Pastor Michael Gienger has a vision of building a community at Galveston Central Church, where all are welcome, regardless of socioeconomic status. “My dream for Central is that you walk in there and can't tell the difference, who is being served and who is serving,” he said. Find Michael: on Instagram @michaelgienger, on Facebook @michael.gienger and discover more about the work happening at Galveston Center Church on their website: http://galvestoncentralchurch.com. Applying Jesus is hosted and produced by Amy Vogel, Director of Spiritual Growth for Upper Room Heights and our Technical Director is Xach Blunt. We record at the Chapelwood UMC Digital Studio in Houston, TX. We hope something you heard today deepened your faith, opened your eyes and led you to not only knowing God in a more expansive way, but shifts how you connect, especially with those who are easy to overlook. See the title for hints. ;) And don't worry, although we cover some pretty complex topics, we keep it humorous because that's who we are. I'm sure you'll be laughing with us along the way.
We have a special treat for you today. We have with us today Andrew Hoffman, Todd Gienger and Dane Lee. These are the episodes I get incredibly excited for. We definitely had a great time and it was a fascinating conversation for me personally. On today's episode we have the normal crew with us, Andrew Hoffman, Jake Bible and Todd Gienger. Todd has recently had a big health scare and wanted to come on the show and talk about it. Todd recently had to go to the emergency room due to chest pains. They originally didn't find anything wrong and luckily the pain went away after a couple days in the hospital. After he was released from the hospital they wanted to schedule some tests to make sure everything was okay. After those tests they found a 90% blockage of a main artery to his heart. If they had not found this blockage at this point it's safe to assume that it would have soon been 100% blocked and Todd would have had a major heart attack and probably would have died. After this major health scare Todd has worked with his health care providers to get this problem in order. He's also working with a mental health specialist and a nutritionist. He has lost almost 40 pounds in the past 4 months. Todd wants everyone to know the importance of regular health checks as they literally could save your life as they most certainly did his. Hopefully we can all learn from Todd's example of going to get checked out by the proper medical professionals when needed. I have known Todd for years and he is one of my closest friends. Any time I need to talk he is always there to listen and offer great advice. We have had many great talks over the years on a large range of topics. He is truly one of the most caring and compassionate people I've ever met. Jake is one of our regular guests on the podcast as he loves to have these interesting discussions with anyone. Jake is very much involved in local leadership with Medina Leadership. He is one of my co-hosts for the American Honesty segments on the show. He's always wanting to bring people on the podcast so they can share their opinion about the controversial topics we all like to cover. Andrew is one of my closet friends. I consider him a brother from another mother. Andrew is always excited to record podcasts and he is one of the funniest people I know. Welcome to a special segment of the Uncensored Humanity Podcast we like to call American Honesty. During these shows I will have two co-hosts; Andrew Hoffman and Jake Bible. On the American Honesty segment we like to discuss topics that society has deemed inappropriate. Our goal is to just get our opinions out in the open for a discussion. We believe that the ability to talk about these tough topics is seriously lacking in today's society, as people seem to get offended too easily. Today Todd Gienger is joining us and unfortunately Andrew was unable to make it. Today we wanted to discuss the 2020 Presidential Election. I know that this is a very polarizing topic and hopefully we won't lose too many of you along the way. I really feel like these are the topics we should all be discussing and not running away from. These are the topics that mean the most to us as Americans. I personally think that the election will be a very close one. I'm not sure who will win. It will all come down to the swing vote like the last election. I just hope whoever wins the other candidate is classy and the losing political party doesn't contest the results. But who knows what will happen. We will all find out very soon together. Hopefully you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we did recording it. American Honesty is a project that Jake started a couple of years ago. So now using the podcast as our platform we are going to carry on the project that Jake started. Hopefully it will lead to some good conversations that others can enjoy as much as we do. Todd's first appearance on the show was American Honesty 11. Jake has been on all the American Honesty segments and a few other individual episodes. If you want to hear more from them go back and listen to those episodes. On today's episode we have two of our favorite guests with us, Todd Gienger and Jake Bible. I wanted to have Todd back on the show and he wanted to ask Jake what makes him want to talk to everyone about tough topics. As you all know by now Jake loves to strike up conversations with anyone about politics, race relations, religion and many other controversial topics. Todd and I have had many of the same conversations with each other over the years. But the two of us normally don't have them with just anyone like Jake seems to enjoy doing. I have known Todd for years and he is one of my closest friends. Any time I need to talk he is always there to listen and offer great advice. Today we wanted to discuss a national level leadership event that Jake was a part of a couple weeks ago. Jake is a part of Medina County Leadership. He was asked to join a national level event to represent Medina County where they discussed all kinds of topics that are relevant during these interesting times. Todd was perfect to join us today as he used to be a part of Leadership Ohio. So he definitely had some great things to offer on the topic. I love that Jake is so interested in helping his community and hopefully his country grow together and not apart like it seems to be doing lately. Please enjoy our conversation. Politische Botschaften sind während Fußballspielen verboten. Dennoch haben sich mehrere Spieler mit dem Gewaltopfer George Floyd aus den USA solidarisiert. CDU-Sportexperte Eberhard Gienger schätzt die Folgen ein.
This is a special segment that I'm going to call Belly Up to the Bar. The whole idea is just to get together, have a few drinks (or more), BS and have a good time. This episode will basically be an invitation to hang with us like we would at our local bar or at one of our house's on the back patio. There were two rules about this podcast. One, you had to drink. Two, no talking about the Covid 19 pandemic. It was time here on the podcast for a change of pace and to just have a good time. Boy did we ever have a good time. We talked about everything from golf, mowing the yard, quantum physics, religion, spirituality, ghosts, etc. You know... The normal topics while out with your friends. I know what you're thinking. Is this really what these guys talk about at a normal get together at the bar. The answer is, Yes. This is exactly what a normal night out would be like. I had a blast and I personally can't wait to do another episode like this one again. Hopefully you guys enjoy it as much as we did. © 2018 Uncensored Humanity Artwork by Kathryn Kidwell Intro music Rover by S Strong – available on Youtube audio library Outro music Whitestick by S Strong – available on Youtube audio library

What did Jesus really mean when he said to Peter, “and upon this rock I will build my church?” Listen as Lonnie Gienger unpacks what the Greek word that Jesus used, commonly translated “church,” actually meant to His disciples. Here’s a hint: Jesus didn’t say, “and upon this rock I will build my synagogue.” The implications for your leadership for the kingdom of God in the marketplace will never be the same! Kevin Gienger enjoys two things outside of the office, bicycling and running, and cooking. Kevin had short stints in basketball and track before getting into biking. Kevin has participated in events like a 200 mile bike ride from Seattle, Washington, to Portland, Oregon. He also has a coffee cake recipe featured in a cookbook! In this episode, Kevin and I talk about why people can be reluctant to share their passions in the workplace how the offices of Boldt, Carlisle & Smith encourage their employees to share fun facts about each other.
I don't think there has ever been a more impactful and powerful CWCM episode! Today I get to interview my inspiring parents on how they have built a passionate and lasting marriage for 35+ years. This has been a highly requested episode and a long time in the making! In a world where marriages are falling apart left and right, this conversation was so encouraging and revealed such a powerful perspective on relationships. A few of the questions they answer in today's episode: How do you know you've found "the one"? What are the core characteristics/traits to look for when choosing your spouse? Why do confident men often become cocky when they're around a confident woman? How can women start empowering men to be MEN instead de'MAN'ing them? What do they wish they would have known in year 1 of their marriage? We held nothing back in this conversation. Trust me... Whether you're single, dating or married, this episode will empower and inspire you so much. This week I'm incredibly excited to bring you an episode from Systems for Success. SFS is a podcast led by my dad, Lonnie Gienger, and once a month our entire family gets together for a "family roundtable discussion" episode and we teach on specific topics as a group. This week we discuss financial management and how to control money so it doesn't control you. It's also exciting for me to have the SD community meet my entire family all in this one episode. They are all entrepreneurs, podcasters, teachers, influencers etc...just generally high achievers. We like so say "you may be born into the Gienger family, but you still have to become one". :) RESOURCES/THINGS MENTIONED Systems for Success THANK YOU! Thanks again for listening to the show! Money is not important enough to let it control our life! So why not learn how to control our money so we gain more control of our life? But money is like water. It's a valuable resource necessary for life that can easily slip through our fingers. The key is to not let it slip through our fingers without our permission. In this round table discussion, we share some of the things we have done to build money management paradigms and processes into the fabric of our individual and family finances. We reference The Gienger Good Stewardship plan that we developed to help debt proof our family and give our kids a solid financial foundation for their adult lives. Several times in this episode, we reference the following introduction to the plan which we used when we first presented these concepts in our family: The Gienger Good Steward Plan Gienger Family Mission Statement: To courageously lead generations of people to become devoted friends and sold out followers of Christ. Gienger Family Vision Statement: To be intimate Friends of God and effective Kingdom Builders. Gienger Good Steward Plan Purposes: To develop our kids into effective manager’s of God’s resources which He provides them so they can be generous on every occasion in ways that result in thankfulness to God. To teach our kids to be channels of God’s material blessings to the world so that people will be lead to become devoted friends and sold out followers of Christ. To help our kids learn to give, save and spend money wisely and avoid consumer debt in order to give them a solid financial future. To gradually turn over to our kids the money required for their care and support as members of our family. To trust them to be good stewards of a portion of the Gienger family resources. To provide a foundation of personal financial management training that will serve them well the rest of their lives. Plan Guidelines Salary and Other Income While on the plan, kids will receive a monthly “salary” that will become theirs to manage. The amount of salary will be determined by the parents. Salaries will be subject to annual review by parents, or more often as deemed necessary. Salary will be reviewed and may be increased on the first day of each new school year at parent’s discretion according to the kid’s real needs and demonstrated ability to be an effective and wise financial manager. Note that additional money may be earned to supplement the base salary from income producing jobs…inside the home for specific pre-agreed extra tasks for extra money beyond normal “privileges” for being a part of this family. Giving and Saving Requirements Kids must give away at least 10 percent of the total salary and other income to things that directly build God’s Kingdom. They must save or invest at least 10 percent of total salary and other income in a real bank or other parent-approved investment vehicle. The balance of the monthly salary will be used according to the kid’s plan and in keeping with our family’s values. Note that kids can give additional money and/or save up more in short term savings for future larger purchases from additional earnings or under spending. Financial Responsibility List Kids will have a list of items and activities the parents will no longer pay for while the kid is receiving a monthly salary. The list is subject to review and revision at any time by the parents. Additional items will be added to the list on the first day of each new school year related to the increase in salary. Home Privilege Responsibility List Kids will continue to have a list of tasks they will be responsible to do as a privilege because they are part of the community of this family. Citations with fines may be required if these tasks aren’t done in the time or manner agreed. Spending Plan and Record Kids are asked to develop a plan for how much money they intend to spend in each category and keep a record of actual expenses by category. The next month salary will only be given after the record of all spending from the prior month is shown to parents. Once It’s Gone, It’s Gone Kids will not borrow money from anyone including parents, not even for five minutes. There will be no “advances” on ahead of pay day. It they run out of money before the next payday, that’s their choice, but there will be no more income until the next pay day. Hands-Off Parents will not criticize or interfere with the kid’s management decisions as long as the child follows these guidelines and demonstrates their ability to live and manage their salary according to the family’s values. Graduation Date Kids will graduate from the Gienger Good Steward Plan within two months after they are no longer full time students or when they move away from home, at which time their salary will cease. EPISODE RESOURCES: If you'd like to use the cash envelop spending system that we reference, it is helpful to have an envelop for each budget category. That envelop gets funded at the beginning of each month with the monthly amount of cash budgeted for that category. All cash spent for items in that budget category comes out of that envelop and you write a something on the front that describes what it was spent for. We just used standard legal size envelops, ran them through the desktop printer and then punched holes in them so they could be held vertically in a regular three ring binder. If you want to create your own cash spending envelops, here's a link to our word document which you can customize and print. Envelop Spending Record At the end of each month you total up what you spent in each category as recorded on each envelop as you spent the money throughout the month. Then you write the total amount of spending for each category on a summary spreadsheet that shows your budgeted amount for each category and the actual amount that you actually spent that month in each category. At the beginning of each school year, we created a new list of expense items and monthly budget for those items that each child was responsible to pay for with their "salary" money. And we also listed which expenses that mom and dad would continue to pay for. Here's a link to the spreadsheet we used which you could customize for yourself. Spending Plans-Blank THANK YOU! Welcome back to another Monday episode! I've officially named these episodes: Coffee with Chelann Mondays. Why? Because the first Monday of every month I will be releasing a bonus episode for the week with myself either doing a solo episode on an asked for topic, or I'll be featuring a conversation I had with a special guest. And, you all know I love coffee. So, hence that part of the title. ;) I am SO stoked for today's episode because it features a conversation with myself and my business partners, Teliah Gienger and Kennedy Wilkinson. The direction of this conversation was all centered around how to have a good business partnership. I talk about business partnerships and Teliah and Kennedy a lot on EB25 episodes, so it's about time that you guys hear from them yourselves! I absolutely LOVE this conversation because it's such a good representation of who we are and what life is really like in our businesses. I'm so excited for you guys to listen and can't wait to hear what you thought about it! So, sit back and get ready to laugh because you're about to get a candid glimpse into our everyday lives. ;)
In this episode, Kylon and Teliah talk about their seven years of marriage and what it's been like building businesses and working together as husband and wife. Some of the things they talk about: How to handle high stress situation with each other...a must if you are building a business with your spouse! How do you prioritize goals and objectives together and stay on the same page? Long distance relationships. Maintaining personal and work boundaries. Sectioning off time to be productive but also not losing time being together and developing the relationship. Tons more! THANK YOU! Thanks again for listening to the show! Loved having my wife Te on for this one! We sat down with a couple drinks to talk about excuses, "extreme ownership" and several other things. Te is a serial entrepreneur, health coach, yoga instructor, and author. In addition to owning Renu Hot Yoga and NUYU Juice Bar, she also hosts her own yoga teacher trainings, runs private health retreats, coaches private clients, and sells her book "Choose You". Quotes that stood out in this episode: "there's no such thing as a good excuse, even if it's a good one." and "that really chaps my ass". Please excuse our hot mess-atitude. You may want to listen with the volume down, and we drop a couple of expletives. Headphones would be a good thing. We are fueled by wine and carbs! So, sit back and enjoy our lit kiki of a podcast. Cheers to 2017 and hello to 2018. Gem of the week Dalmatian Dalmatian Stone stimulates the nerves and reflex actions, and is beneficial to the muscles, tendons and cartilage. It also helps prevent strains, sprains and muscle spasms. [Gienger, 33][Hall II, 113][Eason, 300] It is thought to boost the immune system and remove toxins, and to assist with bowel disorders, particularly IBS and constipation. It is also useful in the treatment of skin problems and allergic rashes. [Eason, 300] If life has become burdensome and all sense of joy seems to be lost, wearing or carrying a Dalmatian Stone can reawaken a sense of fun and humor. It has a fortifying, restorative and emotionally harmonizing effect, counteracting disillusion, cynicism and skepticism. Its Tourmaline inclusions quickly dissipate negative energy and outworn patterns, moving you forward in life. [Gienger, 33][Eason, 300][Hall II, 112-113] Dalmatian Stone opens the Base, Sacral and Earth Chakras, grounding and assisting one in coming to terms joyfully with being in incarnation. [Hall II, 112] The Base, or Root Chakra, is located at the base of the spine, and controls the energy for kinesthetic feeling and movement. It is the foundation of physical and spiritual energy for the body. When the Base Chakra is in balance, the physical body gains strength and stamina, and spiritual energy is rekindled in the form of security and sense of one's own power. It often leads to independence and spontaneous leadership. The Sacral Chakra, or Second Chakra, is located below the naval and above the pubic bone at the front of the pelvis. It controls the flow of energy and is the center of gravity and Life Force of the body. The Earth Chakra is located between and slightly below the feet. It holds the soul into carnation and creates a solid connection to the planet Earth, allowing excess and out-of-balance energies to flow from the body. https://www.crystalvaults.com/crystal-encyclopedia/dalmatian-stone Keep in Touch! selfcreatedpodcast@gmail.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/selfcreatedpodcast Instagram: www.instagram.com/selfcreatedpodcast Newsletter: http://eepurl.com/cGXHQn
