My home group is in St. Petersburg, Russia, but one year ago I moved to Hanoi, Vietnam, where there are few other recovering sexaholics. My recovery started the day I came to an SA meeting. Since that day my life has changed a lot, and it is still changing. I am grateful for everything, past, present, and future. My life is happening exactly as the God of my understanding wants, so I accept everything life brings to me. I want to live this life.
This week on Disaffected: -Apple releases a cringe-tastic self-promotional commercial featuring an angry black woman as Mother Nature who goes to corporate headquarters like Evilene from the Wiz. After emasculating and humiliating the white men at the board table–including ur-cuck CEO Tim Cook–she promises to be back next year. Watch and marvel at how the employees and actors simper and grovel while at the same time bragging about their carbon neutrality. -President Joe Biden mumble-stumbles through a speech in Hanoi Vietnam. He can't remember anyone's name. He can't pronounce consonants because his speech is permanently slurred. He drags out the never-existed-in-film "move line" about lying, dog-faced pony soldiers. Attention adversarial world leaders: Attack us now and get 25 percent off! -Oh, Canada. Our allegedly once-great neighbor to the north is pulling pre-2008 books from school libraries on account of "inclusivity." The Diary of Anne Frank is among them. Marvel at the apparently psychopathic Canadian Karen—a medical doctor—who screamed abuse at her board colleague for refusing to back Dr. Karen's proposed school mask mandate. All that and more this week!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Dilemmas of Life - How to overcome the dilemmas and live a better life
My ambition is to go all over the world! Yep, this is a touch too ambitious. One of the essential lessons I learned in software engineering was how to deal with complexity. We could achieve something meaningful step by step by breaking down the large challenge into smaller, manageable pieces. Hanoi has always been one of my favorite cities in Southeast Asia. Charming, pedestrian friendly in many places, historic, vibrant, I miss visiting Hanoi very much. In this episode I return to Hanoi with audio from my 2017 visit around the Old Quarter and The Rising Sun Bridge at Hoan Kiem Lake. LIke many people in Vietnam I have been reluctant to travel around the country much due to the uncertainty of possibly being stuck in a place outside of your base city. Currently travel within the country is virtually impossible unless you are leaving Vietnam. With the news that over 80% of people over 18 have now had their first vaccination in Ho Chi Minh City there is hope that we will eventually be through the worst of this current wave of the pandemic. Are you considering a trip to Vietnam? If you’re someone who’s all about food when it comes to traveling, definitely check out Saigon where there’s a plethora of food stalls across the city. Local snack on one hand, you can enjoy food and stroll the city at the same time. Moreover, if you’re looking for a more authentic feel of being a local, you can visit Hanoi where it will be fun as well to search for a shop where you can dress up in traditional clothing called ao dai. Hanoi, Vietnam-How To Avoid Tourist Scams And Overcharging I love Hanoi! It's one of my favorite cities in Southeast Asia. The Old Quarter, French Quarter, and Hoan Kiem Lake hold some of the most charm, intrigue, and atmosphere in the whole region. But being overcharged or taken on a scam can taint your stay so I put this video together on my last visit in order to help you be prepared.Actually many of these incidents don't usually involve big dollars but no one wants to be taken no matter how little it is. Sometimes the baguette ladies will try to charge you double, which is usually only 5000VND more or 20 cents but it's still double what you should be paying! As I said in the video most of these people are misguided or desperate and are often only trying to make some quick money to put food on the table. One other scam I did not include in the video are massage places that give you a price but then subsequently charge ridiculous fees for ad ons that feel like freebies, like water or tea. If you do a search on Trip Advisor or other platforms there are trustworthy places in Hanoi. Mostly it's just common sense and being very clear how much something costs and in what currency. I've been to Vietnam 4 times in the last two years and it's just something I naturally do when I'm there. Most often hotels and tour companies will always quote you a price in US dollars so I automatically ask them to give me the price in VND. That way you can check the conversion rate before you agree to anything. Support The Far East Travels video podcast! I rely on public support to bring you the best travel experiences in Asia!In this episode I spend more time walking through the atmospheric streets of Hanoi's Old Quarter, in search of baguettes and other things for my morning breakfast. When I find myself on a slow travel trip, I will typically spend up to two weeks in one town or city. So if I know this in advance I will make sure I book a room in a guesthouse or hotel with a fridge so I can do some self-catering, mainly to take care of my breakfast needs. I still don't want to miss out on trying what the locals eat for breakfast everyday but it's nice to have some baguettes and tea or coffee before I head out in the early morning to captures images and check out the local markets. Usually in Hanoi I will want to stay in the Old Quarter so I can be right out in the chaos first thing plus it's easy walking distance to Hoan Kiem Lake, The French Quarter, and other sites. In this episode I also briefly touch on some of the scams, particularly the overcharging of tourists that quite often happens in the Old Quarter. Thanks so much for listening and as always your support! It'https://www.patreon.com/FarEastAdventureTravelHanoi is one of my favorite cities in Southeast Asia. I usually stay in the old quarter, one ofy the most atmospheric parts of the city where there's amazing street food, unique shopping streets, and plenty of cafes to watch daily life in the capital. But it's also loaded with scam artists looking for easy targets. In this episode of the podcast I chat about some of the more popular scams. Overcharging is rampant as well especially in the old quarter and even more specifically close to Hoan Kiem Lake. I like sharing these stories as I hope it will help visitors avoid some of these situations and unpleasant outcomes that can lead to not wanting to ever visit the city or country again. I've read many travel forums where people were scammed by either a shoe cleaner or taxi driver and haved vowed never to return again. It's unfortunate but most of this stems from people who are merely misguided and lack an education. Struggling to put food on the table everyday they revert to these methods in order to support themselves. I think particularily in Hanoi you'll find more scams than in other Vietnamese cities including Ho Chi Minh City. I hope revealing some of these scams will help you avoid them on your next visit to Hanoi. It really is a wonderful city and can be enjoyed to the fullest by avoiding these uncomfortable situations.Write A Review:https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/adventure-travel-far-east-inspired-by-rick-steves-lonely/id1079513943?mt=2YouTube:http://: http://www.youtube.com/c/JohnSaboefareastadventuretravel

For as little as $1/month you can help me continue to bring you podcasts and travel information/inspiration from the Far East!I Absolutely love Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam! On my most recent visit I spent nearly 17 days hanging out, chatting with locals, and getting to know the city and it's people. As I said in the video, it's very easy to just hang out in it's Old Quarter, with it's atmospheric themed shopping streets, great cheap delicious street food, and the ultra cheap and refreshing bia hoi, fresh beer, that costs $9000VND, about $.040US. Life unfolds all around you in the Old Quarter. Locals are quite comfortable leaving their doors open, and acting out their daily life in the public, from taking naps to getting into family arguments. I'm addicted to the traditional wet markets in Asia, the bustle and the amazing selection of fresh produce, fruit, seafood, bake goods and of course street food! I also spent lots of time around Hanoi's Dong Xuan Wholesale Market, where you can find little alleys and lanes full of the fresh bounty of Northern Vietnam along with amazing little food stalls that sell of the best street food in Asia. More of this to come in future podcasts! Thanks so much for listening and don't forget to follow me for daily images and live/recorded video from Asia:https://www.instagram.com/fareastadventuretravel/youtube.com/c/JohnSaboefareastadventuretravel

Hanoi Free Tour Guides is a fantastic organization that offers free tours for anyone visiting Hanoi. It’s a wonderful way to connect with the local culture as all guides are local students studying English eager to meet foreigners and show them around their city. You can basically ask for any kind of tour for the whole day if you like. You only have to pay for transportation if required and meals or drinks for your guide. There is no need to tip, in fact they will refuse any money offered.Only a few months earlier in Hanoi famous TV travel host and chef Anthony Bourdain hosted a special dinner with President Obama. The featured dish? A bowl of bun cha, the famous bbq pork meal of Hanoi.Although I do not eat pork myself I thought it would be interesting to talk about the dish that had gained so much attention in the United States and around the world from this famous meeting. We walked to a restaurant in the old quarter of Hanoi famous for bun cha. Phuong actually theorized that the Obama/Bourdain meal wasn’t hosted here because of the logistics of trying to protect the president in such a tight space. We had so much planned for this walk of the old quarter that was originally a Facebook live broadcast but only minutes after visiting the restaurant a huge tropical downpour started so we were forced to find refuge in a cafe. The rain lasted so long we were unable to continue the broadcast and were left with some interesting talk about bun cha and later a short conversation about ancestor worship in Vietnam. Thanks so much for listening!

The Temple of Literature or Van Meiu, Quoc Tu Giam was Vietnam’s first university. This temple is dedicated to Confucius as well as past scholars and sages, so significant it’s even featured on the back of the 100,000 dong note.Confucius was a Chinese teacher, philosopher, and politician among other things. In the early part of his life in 500 B.C. China had broken into rival states battling for supremacy. To bring more peace and harmony into society Confucius, created a code of ethics for people. He traveled the country to explain his principles. At the time his philosophy was radically different from the belief of acquiring status by power and heroic actions rather than selflessness, non-violent behaviour, and respect for others. It was Founded in 1070 by emperor Ly Thanh Tong. Dedicated to Confucius or Khong Tu, when it first opened in 1076 entrance was only granted to those of noble birth. It wasn’t until 1442 that the university opened it’s doors to gifted students from across Vietnam who came to study the principles of Confucianism, literature, and poetry. As you walk the main path of the complex you pass through the landscaped grounds filled with trees and ponds and several gates that lead into other sections with a total of 5 courtyards. As you walk the main path of the complex you pass through the landscaped grounds filled with trees and ponds and several gates that lead into other sections with a total of 5 courtyards. It’s easy to picture students taking a break to relax in between studies during the days of when the Temple of Literature was an active university. It’s still possible to feel some of that peace with just a dull rumble of motorbikes and traffic in the background. It’s easy to appreciate the traditional Vietnamese architecture with many structures and features made of wood and tiles. In the third courtyard sits the pond known as the Well of Heavenly Clarity, sometimes also referred to as the Lake of Literature. It’s here where you also find the tombstone looking stelae dedicated to 1307 Doctors who studied here between 1442 and 1779. All of the stelae sit on stone tortoises, the sign of wisdom and longevity. In May during exams in Hanoi, students were often seen at the temple rubbing the heads of the tortoise, believing it will bring good luck and a pass on their tests. Today there’s a fence in place to help preserve the turtles. The fourth courtyard is dedicated to Confucius and 72 honored students as well as Chu Van An, known as an extremely passionate teacher. There’s another tortoise on display, this one is gold plated ceramic. The tortoise is one of 4 sacred and mythical animals revered by Vietnamese, the others are the Phoenix, Dragon, and Unicorn. This area is also where Confucius along with his four closest disciples are worshipped.10 other philosophers are also honored in this sanctuary. Because the Temple of Literature is such a picturesque location of history and traditional architecture there’s probably not a day that goes by without young couples posing for their wedding photos. Depending on the time of year you’ll also notice students upon graduation or completion of studies taking pictures. During the time the Temple of Literature was operating as a university right up until it’s closing in 1779, students lived as well as studied here. Along with Confucianism, poetry, and literature, students learned Chinese, Chinese philosophy, and Chinese history. They had minor tests each month and four major ones every year. Students were enrolled in the university anywhere between 3 and 7 years. The fifth courtyard was constructed in 1076 to be the imperial academy. In 1236 the Minh Luan House, more classrooms and dormitories were added. Khai Thanh Shrine was constructed to honor Confucius’ parents. In 1946 the French destroyed the fifth courtyard and it wasn’t until 2000 that new buildings were constructed along with the addition of a bell and drum tower. Ceremonies are organized in the fifth courtyard for cultural scholars and events along with other activities. Ho Chi Minh is considered the founding father of modern Vietnam. He was a communist revolutionary, prime minister and president. He died in 1969 before he could realize his dream of a united Vietnam. Upon the fall of Saigon and the end of the war the former capital of the south was renamed after him. That same year a mausoleum was constructed in Hanoi where his body is displayed under dim lights in the cool central hall of the building. The mausoleum, inspired by Lenin’s mausoleum in Moscow is open to the public daily from 9 to 11am. There are strict dress codes and even body posture. No shorts or skirts, and hands must not be in your pockets or arms crossed. Photography or video is not allowed and even outside of the mausoleum when the doors are open there is a minimum distance where visitors to the area are allowed. Still, it’s definitely worth visiting just for the fact that there are only 5 former leaders on display, this way, in the world. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is located at the center of Ba Dinh Square, where Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence in 1945 establishing the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Another site in Hanoi worth a visit and that should take less than two hours to properly cover is the infamous Hoa Lo Prison, known to American POW’s during the Vietnam War as the Hanoi Hilton. Much of the prison was destroyed in the nineties for development but the original gatehouse remains as do some of the old cells and corridors. The displays are mostly focused on the days when the prison, run by the French colonists, kept Vietnamese political prisoners. Inside a model of the original prison compound is on display along with lots of stories and articles of clothing of revolutionaries. Some of the cells are remembered as places where Vietnamese looking to overthrow the French suffered. A guillotine used by the French to behead revolutionaries is in a haunting room complete with soundtrack. There are a couple of rooms where flight suits, photographs, and other personal items from captured U.S. military are on display which most will find interesting. Including pictures of young North Vietnamese female soldiers capturing and marching big tall American soldiers through the jungle. Another room with the use of mannequins shows how crowded and horrid the conditions for Vietnamese prisoners were. Originally to house 450, records show there were up to 2000 imprisoned here in the 1930’s. The prison is really a show of the fighting spirit of these revolutionaries honoring their suffering for the eventual freedom from the French. There’s even the actual sewer on display that many escaped through. The final outside area of the museum is where a memorial is located and a haunting mural/sculpture depicting the torture and suffering of the Vietnamese that were jailed here. Hanoi is the polar opposite is some ways to Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City, more traditional and formal in some ways, even strict, with much of the old quarter closed by 11pm. Different but still fascinating and exciting in it’s own way, and I can’t wait to share more. Subscribe now-https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/adventure-travel-far-east/id890305531?mt=2
Remarks and Toast by President Higgins, at a State Banquet, International Convention Centre, Hanoi, Vietnam 7th November 2016
“Never Ask a Barber If You Need head Cut” Warren Buffett Incentive super- response tendency .In the 19th To reduce and eradicate the infestation of rat in Hanoi Vietnam, the French colonial rulers passed a law: For every dead rat handed in to the authorities, the catcher would receive a reward. Obviously a lot of rats were destroyed but in the meantime many were bred specifically for this purpose. Yes in the 21th century, modern incentives are not better: Company boards promises to CEOs bonuses for achieved targets. Guess what happens? Company managers invest more energy in trying to lower the targets than growing the company. Put in another way the company is sitting on ticking time bomb (unless the CEO is founder, hence has something to lose) example These are example of incentive super- response tendency. This was coin for the first time by Charlie Munger the legendary business partner of Warren Buffett. Incentive super- response tendency. is the fact people response to the incentives by doing what is in their best interests. What is more striking here is the behaviour of people change immediately when any promise of incentives comes into play and secondly people respond to the incentives themselves and not to the real intention behind them. Real good incentive systems comprise both the intent and the reward. Just as cab driver both something to lose and to gain if he/she is good and a bad driver. Bad incentive systems overlook and sometimes even make worst the ultimate aim. For example censoring book, makes its contents more famous and most importantly rewarding Here are 4 big ideas to be taken away. If you want to influence the behaviour of people or organisations? You could always preach about values and visions, your ability to tell stories or you could appeal reason. But incentive work better.by its needs not to be necessary monetary (financially), anything is useable such as good grades to Nobel prizes or special treatment afterlife So for example if you are dealing with consultants, architects, accountants – meaning experts can be paid in their respective field per hour. I would recommend you to avoid paying the hourly rate instead negotiate a fixed price in advance. Just as you bargain with a cab driver about your next destination, he will be more likely to accomplish very well than when he switches his on sometimes they even screw you by driving long distance just to make you pay more. Beware of the semi erudite who play the erudite such as some investment advisors, consutants, experts, entrepreneurs, investment bankers who usually are not interested in your well-being but to their own interest at heart. Warren Buffet sum up this way” “Never ask a Barber if you need hair cut The message is clear if a person or an entity or organisation is making you a proposition, ask yourself what is the incentive behind it.
