Yet, his passion for movement led him to explore breakdance and freestyle dance, disciplines that demand exceptional agility, strength, and creativity. "I influence the modern side and the Shaolin side" - ShaolinInfluencer. His disruptive approach has resonated within the Shaolin Temple Europe community, attracting students eager for a learning experience that transcends traditional teachings. Another key discussion revolves around handling suffering and challenges, where Shi Heng Yi uses his own life examples to show how embracing difficulties can lead to growth and self-improvement. The conversation also covers the development of the Shaolin Temple Europe, showcasing how ambition and principles have guided its growth beyond just physical and mental training to include spiritual enlightenment. Master Yi's approach to teaching and living emphasizes staying true to one's values while pursuing goals.
For today's episode, I'm honoured to welcome Master Shi Heng Yi. He belongs to the 35th generation of Shaolin Masters and began practising Kung Fu at the age of four. In the 36 years since, he's acquired a wealth of knowledge in Chinese martial arts and Zen Buddhism. He's now headmaster of the Shaolin Temple Europe in Germany, responsible for the physical and mental development of all the students and disciples of the Buddhist Order in Otterberg. Along with the free videos he posts regularly to YouTube, Shi Heng Yi has several online training courses via his website, to help teach the basics of the ancient practices he lives by. He wants to bring the wisdom of ‘self-mastery' to the world in a practical, tangible way – and he does just that in this episode. This is a wonderful, profound conversation that explores what self-mastery means. While mastering a skill can be taught by others, self-mastery is a personal matter. Our awareness is naturally drawn outwards in life, so we need to cultivate the ability to look inwards. We discuss some of the ways we can start to do this, from practices of mindfulness and gratitude, to following a structured day. Shi Heng Yi explains what we can learn from the restrictions of temple life, how to identify our attachments and find happiness and freedom within us. Self-mastery, he says, means choosing the middle path of harmony, balance and stability. We discuss the notion of ‘owning' ideas and wisdom and discuss the fact that there is no truly original thought. Shi Heng Yi explains that he is not sharing his teachings with the world, only what he has learned and witnessed in life. Everything is infinite so already exists somewhere. Finally, Master Shi Heng Yi explains a beautiful concept – and caution – that our thoughts can shape our destiny. It really was a privilege for me to have an in-depth discussion with such a knowledgeable, wise and compassionate man. I hope you enjoy listening.Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. To give to the Behind Greatness podcast, please visit us: https://behindgreatness.org. As a charity, tax receipts are issued to donors. Welcome back to Behind Greatness. We sit down for a one on one chat with Master Shi Heng Yi who is at his temple in Otterberg Germany. Shifu, as we call him, is the founder and headmaster of Europe's only 24x7 Shaolin Temple for martial arts. He is a martial arts master practising the way of Chan Buddhism. Born and bred in Germany, he is the son of Vietnamese immigrants who left to make a better path for their children. As a young boy he took up martial arts – and the training, discipline and world view it afforded him became a foundation for how he was to live his life as an adult. We dive immediately into a discussion about the attention to thoughts, thoughts being separation and the truth in the non-rational and the non-intellectual. And there's more: replacing coincidence, not being unaligned, thoughts coming for you and becoming the paradise that you want to achieve. We learn about different types of elevation and the bottom line of what the true type of elevation ultimately creates. So much goodness here. "It has never changed, and it has always been like this; there no other way than dealing with the yin and the yang of this life." - Shi Heng Yi. Isra Garcia interviews Shaolin Master Shi Heng Yi, headmaster at the Shaolin Temple Europe, for the third time. This conversation is a catch-up between Shi Heng Yi and Isra, where they review, from now to the past two years, the most important milestones for the Shaolin Master since the last interview they did together in 2021. "The benefits are not going to come later in paradise; the benefits are supposed to come right now." "People like to hear when I talk, but they don't like to do the practice." - Shi Heng Yi. In this interview, you will find what is missing in this world to master yourself and learn how to improve whatever needs improvement. Shaolin Master Shi Heng Yi gets more profound on the teachings, method, philosophy, and way of practice to make a difference in your life. Also, the factors and considerations needed to make you decide to find what works for you and the benefits of practising his teachings. And what we can do to improve ourselves. "Don't like me, like the teaching." Shi Heng Yi also covers the 12-month Self-Mastery online program he leads and Shaolin Spirit, his first book, recently published, where he also gets deeper into what the Shaolin Spirit is about. Isra and the Shaolin master talk about "the how" of finding a master, inspiration, a guide and the methods you need to get what you want. "Find somebody who can inspire you; find somebody who expresses how you want to be." - Shi Heng Yi. Index of contents - and what you will learn in this episode What has happened in the last two years since the previous interview? These are the most common patterns and behaviours that people are missing. Observations about the world. Dealing with the yin and yang of this life. Emphasizing the practice, not the teachings. Putting knowledge into action. The Self-Mastery program. What is the Shaolin Spirit, and how can it be developed? How to develop an unstoppable attitude. Finding inspiration in others and yourself. The question and the challenge from the master to the listeners. "What is more important, more people with the ability to change or more people that will surely change?" Podcast show notes: The path to Self-Mastery - first interview. Key lessons on the Shaolin Spirit - second interview. Shaolin Temple Europe. Shaolin Self-Mastery course. Shaolin Spirit - book. Shi Heng Yi's website. "Many people are interested in the teachings, but if they are left alone and do not have the right guidance, they can go in the wrong direction sometimes." - Shi Hen Yi.
Was ist seit 1983 passiert? “Just getting to know what is Buddhism, which is the foundation of every monastery. The Shaolin Temple is in the core, first of all it's a Buddhist monastery and when you are starting to read about Buddhism, one of the key sentence in the beginning is: With your thoughts you are creating the world…So it's very rarely clearly stated that it is the thoughts that are creating the world. Nevertheless, if you are now looking at the practices that the Shaolin Temple offers, that is quite physical. There is a lot of physicality in there, so you might think but why are you saying with thoughts you create the world, but you have so many different physical activities. It is because if you want to have mental freedom. If you want to approach freedom, you cannot just approach freedom by doing things or trying to chase freedom. The freedom that we are looking for is the type of freedom that is derived and that is very closely related to its counterpart, which is very hard restriction or very hard structure. So if you want to experience what freedom is, look at the restrictions of your life.”For more than 30 years, Master Shi Heng Yi has been studying and practicing the interaction between mind and body. The content is more important than the container Just now I am in Shaolin Temple Europe in the office of the abbot. Here there is an extensive library of Buddhist books, many of which have Chan (Zen) as their theme, I looked at a few. I noticed that all the books are about sutras, precepts and history, but the essence of Buddha's teaching, "enlightenment", is not, or hardly, covered. Page by page, the places are listed where Buddha had stayed, where he was born, where he taught, where he stayed. Also his successor Bodhidharma is discussed in detail historically, his successors, up to Hui Neng, are considered in all details historically. The transmission of the (Chan) Buddhist "teaching" to Japanese, Korean and other Buddhist monks is treated in detail in terms of content. In a book about Chan (Zen) it is described on almost 300 pages who Buddha was, views about his life are compared, but about the central topic "enlightenment" there are only a few lines. Allegedly, the historical Buddha, in deep meditation, achieved the redeeming knowledge of the middle way, and defined the four noble truths. The statement can only come from an author who has not experienced "enlightenment", but treats the subject of "Buddhism" like a historian, and also does not take "awakening" seriously. The reason probably also lies in the fact that everybody copies from everybody. Buddha's way to "enlightenment" as the core statement of Buddhism, however, cannot be treated separately from his life. Buddha reached "awakening" after he had failed completely. He meditated for 6 years to achieve something that was unknown to him in the early days. His various meditations were aimed at the knowledge of the essence of all things, however, at that time, even the historical Buddha was like a blind man talking about color. When he had completely given up the search, failed and empty, all desires, imagination and valuations fell away from him, only then Buddha experienced the "awakening". "Enlightenment" is not a physical phenomenon, but a spiritual one. As with Buddha, meditation can certainly accompany your path, but "enlightenment" presupposes the cognitive component of realization, namely letting go of everything, becoming completely empty. If now the most different authors write about Buddha, Bodhidharma and Chan, without having attained realization themselves, this is WRONG. Thus seekers are led into the completely wrong direction. Buddha is not only a historical personality whose life can be considered chronologically, but a spiritual teacher whose teaching constitutes his life. Without having experienced "enlightenment", there should be no texts on Buddhism. If after the first snowfall someone paves the way others will follow the path! My first book reading For the celebration of Chinese New Year, I was, together with my brother Taema Jun, in Shaolin Temple Europe, "asked" in advance by the abbot Shi Heng Zong to read from the book "Shaolin Rainer". I was aware of his desire to read from my book. However, I struggled with myself in advance about whether I should participate in the Chinese New Year at all. The idea of talking about my life, of making personal things public, was very uncomfortable for me. The abbot called several times and asked when we would come, and whether we (including my brother) would contribute something to the Chinese New Year, he was not put off even by my multiple refusals. I have been close friends with the abbot of Shaolin Temple Europe Shi Heng Zong for over 20 years, so I did not feel comfortable after my cancellations. I couldn't stop thinking about him and our time together. My temple brother Taema (he is visiting from Korea for 3 months) felt my inner turmoil, so he called the abbot again. Previously, we had agreed that if our room was not yet assigned further, we would go, and the room was still reserved for us. In short, we drove, and on the way, I was very thoughtful. We arrived late at the temple and checked into our room. On New Year's Day, we sat in the abbot's office, planning for the celebrations had been completed. Taema was to give a Dharma talk (and promote his Dharma seminar on 2/21-23, see below) and I was to read from my book after all. The uncomfortable feeling continued to spread through me. In this context, I must mention that I had very mixed feelings about my book from the beginning. Certainly, I am proud of the fact to have been the first foreigner in Shaolin Temple in China more than 30 years ago, to have received the order from the abbot to open Shaolin, to have also opened the temple (which still exists today), to have founded other temples all over Europe. However, there were also very difficult times in the course of my history with Shaolin, very painful events, which I also do not want to remember. Precisely because I do not want to remember, I did not want to do this book "actually". For many years the author Karl Kronmüller asked me to write this book. I always refused, I didn't want to have "much to do with Shaolin anymore. I had broken off all contact with the temple, with the monks. Only with my master Shi Yan Zi, the founder of Shaolin Temple England, I was always in contact. With Taema, my brother, I had intense conversations, almost daily, in Korea. Even from my friend Shi Heng Zong I had almost withdrawn. Whenever Karl asked me again whether he could not tackle "the book", I refused, saying that surely the subject was of no interest to anyone and that I did not want to be reminded of those times. One day I said "yes" when Karl asked again, hoping that the book would never be finished anyway. 6 months later it lay finished on the table in front of me. I must have been mistaken. Now my book is in Shaolin Temple Europe in the office of the abbot, he "insisted" on a reading. And I did not want to disappoint him, to contribute to the celebration of the Chinese New Year. The celebration was wonderful, the abbot created a dreamlike atmosphere, people love the temple, and the ceremony was entertaining yet dignified, just like him, he is a great person. The Mulligan Brothers Podcast talks to the inspirational Shi Heng Yi to discuss his life as a Shaolin Temple headmaster. Born and raised in Germany, Shi was fascinated with many martial arts movies at a young age, this spiked his interest in martial arts. Therefore, at 4 Shi was enrolled by his father into the nearby Shaolin Temple Europe in Kaiserslautern, Germany. This is where he fell in love with practising martial arts, training took over his life, committing time to the temple from 4pm until 10pm. His parents imagined him to become a doctor, engineer or lawyer whilst growing up, but Shi, even after an MBA and multiple diplomas, wasn't satisfied with education. Education, he believed, taught him a lot, but not very much about himself. Comparatively, at the monastery he learnt a lot about self-exploration, and self-discovery fulfilled him from such a young age. Consequently, from February 1987 Shi served as the headmaster of Shaolin Temple Europe. Shi teaches mental and spiritual development, and his purpose is to spread the ancient knowledge inherited from centuries ago to the modern world. He talks to us about his childhood, the importance of structure, freedom of our own minds and the real benefits of hard work.
The 108 Temples Tour or the Journey of the Chan Knights 108 TT or the journey of the Chan Knights "Sometimes I am a master, sometimes a disciple, it depends with whom I exchange my energy," said the wise monk. The 108 Temples Tour is to visit the 108 sacred Buddhist sites in Nepal, India, China, Tibet, Korea, Bhutan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Japan, and will end at Shaolin Temple China. It traces the journey of the Buddhist teaching, from its foundation by the historical Buddha Siddharta Gautama, to its expression in modern times, following both historical routes and dates, and contemporary development. Protagonists: Protagonists of the journey are Shi Heng Zong, Taema Jun as well as Rainer Deyhle (Shaolin Rainer), and other Chan followers. Taema Jun is a Korean meditation master who, following a dream, meditated for seven years in the Shaolin Temple China, striving for "enlightenment". There he met Rainer Deyhle, who founded the Shaolin Temple Germany and also meditates himself. Shi Heng Zong leads the Shaolin Temple Europe in Kaiserslautern as abbot. Today these disparate people are brothers in spirit and follow the teachings of Buddha and the teachings of his 28th patriarch, Bodhidharma, who is considered the founder of Chan (Zen) Buddhism. Why a 108 Temple Tour? The Buddhists Shi Heng Zong, Taema Jun and Rainer Deyhle want to look at the work and teachings of the historical Buddha and his 28th successor (Bodhidharma) in a new light. They see this journey as a kind of "Buddhist Dr.", want to absorb the energy of the holy sites, meet wise masters on the journey, exchange and meditate with them, and then carry this energy back home with them. At each temple, the protagonists want to make "108 prostrations" to honor Buddha. Locomotion: The participants of the 108 temples tour will travel together by bus (tour bus). Start: The journey will start from the birthplace of Buddha, Kavilavatsu, in the foothills of the Himalayas, in present-day Nepal. Another important stop will be the "Buddha Tree" under which Siddharta once found his enlightenment. The tree stands on the banks of the Nairanjana River, near the village of Uruvela, now Bodh Gaya. Other possible stops on the trip: The 108 temples tour will include Varanasi (first proclamation of Buddha's teachings, the first Sangha), the bamboo forest at Rajagrita (King Bimbisara gave Buddha a bamboo forest), the town of Shravatsi (Buddha taught there; today Jetavana Monastery), the place of Kushinagara near Lambini (Buddha's place of death), the 8 stupas with Buddha's relics (Buddha's relics were distributed in eight stupas in Rajagriha, Vaishali, Kapilavastu, Allakappa, Ramagrama, Pava, Kushinagar and Vethapida). After venerating the most important sites of the Buddha, the protagonists follow the life path of Bodhidharma. The birthplace of the monk, the temple where he became a monk and other important sites of his life in India will be visited. Furthermore, the protagonists will follow the journey of Bodhidharma to China, from India by ship to Guangdong (Canton) to the former imperial city of Nanking, to the Shaolin Temple China. The climax and end point of the journey is the arrival at the Shaolin Temple China, where Bodhidharma meditated for nine years. In the cave of Bodhidharma, the protagonists will now make 1080 prostrations to absorb the special energy of the place. In this episode of FitChic for Life, Natalie interviews Monk Shi Miao Hai at the Shaolin Temple. They talk about many important concepts to create a high level of consciousness in our lives. We achieve this level by being aware of our thoughts, actions, and behaviors. The more we spend time in our heads, worrying and thinking thoughts that will lead us to places we don't want to go, the harder it will be to change. Another aspect of the conversation is about ‘repeating patterns'. The idea that ‘nothing changes if you don't change' is very well spread nowadays and people don't have a hard time understanding the theory, but in practice the story is different. Monk Shi Miao Hai highlights how fundamental it is to stop reproducing old patterns because the first step to changing your reality is changing your personality. Tune in! “It seems to me that we stay in the same patterns over and over again and I want to see if there is a different quality of life that one can experience.” – Monk Shi Miao Hai Episode Resources Follow Shaolin Temple Europe on Instagram: @shaolintempleeurope Learn more about Shaolin Temple Europe: www.shaolintemple.eu Connect with Natalie! In this episode of FitChic for Life, Natalie interviews Ema Rocket who is a student at Shaolin Temple. Ema talks about many concepts with a special focus on the importance of "just be". According to Ema, we all need to try a little more to just enjoy the moment and quit the mentality that everything has to have an end goal. Her own journey at the temple has no goal and she tells us she is just learning, observing, and being. With a background on movement, Ema also explains that a relaxation state helps with body function too. The secret to having a body with no pain is relaxing into the movement even if you move every day. This idea applies to someone who works out a lot, for example. In addition, Ema talks about nutrition and how good it is to eat food that makes us good – even foods that are not considered "healthy". “There is a fine line between trying to become the best you can become and judging yourself constantly.” – Ema Rocket Episode Resources Contact Ema at journeyintooneself@gmail.com Follow Shaolin Temple Europe on Instagram: @shaolintempleeurope Learn more about Shaolin Temple Europe: www.shaolintemple.eu Connect with Natalie! In this episode of FitChic for Life, Natalie interviews Monk Shen Dojo. As a follow-up to the previous episode, they talk about enlightenment, the importance of staying present at the current moment, and how the mind tricks us into thinking about something else rather than what we are experiencing. Monk Shen also speaks about his background and the reasons that inspired him to become a monk. With a past in martial arts and fitness, Shen explains that life in a monastery has made him more focused on the important things and less stressed about life because now he has more structure – which sometimes can ease the body and the mind. According to Shen, the biggest lesson of this experience is seeing everything changing – he finally let go of control. Tune in! “Enlightenment for me is you always living in the present moment without judging it.” – Shen Dojo Episode Resources Follow Shen Dojo: @shen_dojo Follow Shaolin Temple Europe on Instagram: @shaolintempleeurope Learn more about Shaolin Temple Europe: www.shaolintemple.eu Connect with Natalie! In this special episode of FitChic for Life, Natalie interviews Shi Miao Qing who is a monk at the Shaolin Temple in Europe. In this conversation, Shi Miao speaks about the importance of balancing work and rest, observing the mind, and creating the practice of training the mind to help the body perform better. He also sheds some light on resting. Resting is a fundamental key to relaxing the mind and living a better life. In terms of training, Shi Miao explains that during a training routine when the body is burning and almost giving up, the mind can come into place and help the body to unblock its limitations and do more. You will also learn the concept of self-mastery (not listening to the mind and being a master over your thoughts). Shi Miao also speaks briefly about his past with anxiety and panic attacks and how he overcame them. “Don't fight the mind. If you fight the mind you're already locked in, and then you'll give up. Stay calm and step back.” – Shi Miao Qing Episode Resources Follow Shi Miao Qing: @dao_tea_qing Learn more about Shaolin Temple Europe: www.shaolintemple.eu Connect with Natalie! Jordan Mulligan host of the Mulligan Brothers Motivation interviews Master Shi Heng Yi of the Shaolin Temple Europe. We talk Gung Fu, Balance, year of the tiger, motivation, balance, Shaolin, meditation
My aquarium Maybe some readers have noticed that I got an aquarium as a present from the Shaolin Temple Europe. The good spirit of the temple breeds ornamental fish there in the basement, which brings a very calming aspect. The aquarium is small, stands on my desk, again and again I enjoy the hustle and bustle, the little fish are "lively like fish in water", I enjoy their Buddha nature. At the same time I think to myself that they probably have no idea of the situation, simply accept their container, probably do not doubt their fate, probably do not ponder about the "meaning of life", certainly would not even understand that they are "my" fish, swimming in a water tank, living in an "artificial world". It is also not at all sure whether they "perceive" me. It is also not clear whether they see me at all, can classify me, or simply recognize me as a thick shadow to swim away from. Every time I look into the aquarium I imagine that I too could be living in some kind of container that another species has built for me (and my fellow species), who are now in front of some kind of glass, staring at me as I go about my work, perhaps themselves sitting in a container again, being watched by yet another species. This would correspond very much with the teaching of Buddha, after all is only a dream, which it is necessary to leave. And the fishes themselves, what if they would also keep some kind of pets, such as a web of algae, or small colonies of shells, or maybe just single-celled organisms. All then in consequence species, which think of themselves to be "unique", which do not (can not) see the connection "outside", which do not (can not) understand at all, how things are connected. Just as Buddha explains the connections to us, because we just don't "understand" them either. Can you imagine (for a short moment) that you too are sitting in such a cage (or aquarium)? Above us stands a species that dominates us, allocates things to us, organizes the feeding for us, that "invented" our entire system? A disturbing thought. Whereas we think that we are the crown of creation (which we are not at all). And we think that we would understand so everything, that "our" science would have the "full view". Or what would be, if we are only the play figures of some "spinners from the future", just only the parts of a computer game? Yes, if we look out of our container, but understand nothing, what would be then? The way is the goal! Let the fools strive for glory, toil for vain precedence. Let them seek vain dominion delusions, let them hunt! - Buddha - honorary name of Siddharta Gautama - 560 to 480 before the year zero Copyright: https://shaolin-rainer.de (Please also download my app "Buddha-Blog English" from the Apple and Android stores)
Even love can kill, if things get out of hand, then anything can happen. I was given an aquarium as a gift at the Shaolin Temple Europe near Kaiserslautern, a small one, with plants and a snail as the only inhabitant. The good spirit of the temple breeds ornamental fish in the basement of the facility, I was taken and given a gift I was specifically told that the aquarium was not suitable for fish, I should settle shrimp in it, but I would not listen, after some time went to a store and bought six small neon fish, which shine beautifully. The seller said that this would fit, and I wanted to hear the story so, because I wanted the little fish, pets that I could „love". After a while I realized that the fish tank was "too small" even for the little fish, I got a guilty conscience, decided to go back to the temple, to find a solution there. Once back in the temple, the good spirit told me that I was a murderer because I had almost killed them out of "love for the fish", that my affection had turned into a danger for the fish. Urgently I would need a larger aquarium, so that the fish get the necessary place. No sooner said than done, I received (again as a gift) a larger tank (with accessories) and went back home. There I relocated the fishies, none was lost, I was proud of myself in the end. And I learned something from the story, namely that even love (or affection) can kill, "good" is not always "good", and "bad" must not always be "bad". If even love can kill, then hate can be positive in some cases, nothing is as it seems at first glance. The historical Buddha was right, we should not judge, not divide into "good" or "bad", but accept things and people as it comes, so it should be. In the meantime I bought another coral dwarf frog, the fish feel good, they jump through the outlet nozzle of the water pump, they play with the water jet like in a Jacuzzi. And I watch them (and the frog) mindfully and in peace, the fish tank has a meditative effect on me. I can highly recommend such an aquarium, it is a pleasure to admire nature (in the glass). And I have also learned something, namely to question my feelings better. As always, the journey is the destination! Do not kill and do not let kill! - Buddha ( Siddhartha Gautama) - founder of the philosophy named after him Buddhism- 560 to 480 before the year zero Copyright: https://shaolin-rainer.de (Please also download my app "Buddha-Blog English" from the Apple and Android stores)

“You and me talking right now, the people who are listening right now, in a hundred years none of us will be here on this earth anymore. When it comes to the individual, it's always just a question of time until you will be forgotten and this is why it is so important that there is something in our tradition we call “because it's not the individual, it cannot be lost”. This is when you are investing a part of your lifetime in trying to add something to the spirit, what exists in this world. Sometimes you call it the zeitgeist. Sometimes you call it the consciousness of our earth. It means always ask yourself how can you, with the way you think, with the work that you do, with the way you behave, with the actions that you do–how can you add a piece of spirit? How can you contribute to the spirit that is going to remain even after after your individual death?”For more than 30 years, Master Shi Heng Yi has been studying and practicing the interaction between mind and body.
