Sing it with us!! WHERE THERE'S A WHIP [WHIP SFX] THERE'S A WAY! WHERE THERE'S A WHIP [WHIP SFX] THERE'S A WAY!This week we face the Lord of the Lash himself for the epic return of Arthur Rankin & Jules Bass, and the wildest voice cast in Tolkien history. Roddy McDowall is Sam? Casey Kasem is Merry?! It may not be the most beloved Rings adaptation out there…but it's certainly the last one in a very long while!Next week, we close out the first act of our trilogy with the highly contentious Disney cult classic, THE BLACK CAULDRON (1985). Either way, Bakshi's rotoscope RINGS is extremely influential for Peter Jackson, and we're celebrating its legacy this week.Next week, we complete our unofficial animated trilogy with RETURN OF THE KING (1980) from Rankin and Bass. Series premiere! This week we leave The Shire behind to embark on our journey through Middle Earth and the epic fantasy genre! In the spirit of Lord of the Rings, we've divided our miniseries into three parts, and we're starting today with Part 1: The Road to Mordor. And that road begins with, you guessed it, Ray Harryhausen!Peter Jackson's trilogy would not exist without the sword-and-sandals stop-motion action of Harryhausen – so as we voyage towards Mordor, we must first trek the scorching sands of Ancient Greece, where harpies fly, gigantic statues terrorize, and gods try to kill us out of boredom!

Even the very wise cannot see all ends.”We Finally Talk About Peter Jackson's Epic Fantasy TrilogyConsidering our immense love for this film and the original material, it's a bit surprising that it's taken us into our twelfth season to discuss The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Peter Jackson and his amazing team believed in this world and crafted a script, found a cast, built a crew, and gave it their all to deliver a series of films that perfectly told a cinematic version of J.R.R. Tolkien's books while also creating a model for fantasy filmmaking as well as a model for massive scale film production. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off our Lord of the Rings series with a conversation about Jackson's 2001 film The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Here's a hint at what we talk about. It's a challenge having a conversation about this trilogy as so much has already been said and documented about the production, etc. Still, it gives us a chance to discuss what Jackson brings to the table. How does his production style work in the film? We talk about the cast and many other options that are in the could-have-been version. We certainly prefer this one, but there are interesting actors to discuss. How do the extended and additional scenes work to expand the story for us? We love Howard Shore's score so of course discuss it, but we are fans of what each department brings to the film as they're all working on something they clearly were passionate about. There are some dated effects, but barely any and they don't really bug us much. As for the creatures, they all stand out as impressive but we do have some questions about Jackson going all King Kong on us with the Cave Troll. And lest we forget the Sean Bean memes...We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. Christen Horne refers to herself as a nerd, geek and gamer. She's a big fan of reading and loves Star Wars.As an accomplished singer, she received her Masters in Opera Performance. In addition to the entire family being singers and musicians, archery became a big part of their lives as well.  When Karla, Christen's mother, was in high school she became the California State Champion Archer and the family still enjoys the sport today. Having a mom that worked wasn't that unusual for Christen. Her mom had been a paralegal for years after completing her associates degree.  As the three children were growing up, Karla was  leading worship at the local church.  They spent a lot of time at the church. But my guest says she enjoyed it because they were always singing.Ms. Horne fondly remembers her mom embracing whatever fun activities the kids would be involved in, including  going to water parks and going down the water slides together, playing board games and spending quality time involved with the family. Years ago, Christen was actively involved in her community theatre programs.  She fondly retells the story of  the production of  "Fiddler On The Roof," when her mom and aunt  were  "volun-told' that they  had to play village fathers.  There were no other boys/male actors to play the part.  They still laugh about it today.Christen considered her mother as being firm yet compassionate when it came to disciplining the three kids.  Homework definitely took the priority especially over video games. Homework wasn't done, no one got  to play. Christen says  "mom was always really good about helping us find the balance in things. Making sure we had time to play  and making sure we got our homework done."  It wasn't until Christen started to realize  that she often hid her emotions, that she started to recall other instances from her childhood that were clearly  unhappy. She had suffered from depression at a young age that was left undiagnosed. She felt that her mother was embarrassed when Christen showed her true emotions. Horne shared with me that "through my mental health journey, I've gotten more comfortable being more myself around my mom."  Often feeling "this is my fault," Christen often blamed herself and felt that if her mother rejected her, it would be devastating.  It's scary to be a young child and not understand complicated emotional situation.Working with coaches on a regular basis has helped Christen tremendously. "You pick one hurt, then move on to another," reflects Horne. Through working with her coaches she says her relationship with her mom is so much better and she's very grateful for all the support.Christen is now working on her fantasy book which features her main character 'Alkara' who's named after mother and who also is an archer.      Saul and Jolene have been asked and seen many posts on social media about alternatives to D&D.  Saul decided to stay in the Fantasy Genre and chose a couple of games that are in the same genre but come at Fantasy from a totally different perspective.        This was supposed to be a single episode discussing a couple of what Saul considers very good examples of being Fantasy RPGs but as far removed from D&D as possible in rules and setting.  The first to be discussed is Warhammer Fantasy RPG.   Saul discusses how Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying game is different from the very popular D&D 5th edition.        From the Grim world setting which is very different from most setting in D&D to the very deadly system which pairs very well with the world of Warhammer.  The rules are not only deadly but a bit more crunchy/complicated than D&D 5th edtion.   The system makes the players play in a different style.  Combat is always brutal should be a last resort and often ends with brutal consequences even for the victor.       This was supposed to be a single episode featuring two alternative Fantasy RPGs to D&D.  Unfortunately we only discussed Warhammer so this must be a two episode topic.     As Always Thank You All for Listening.    Web page art by Jim Foster    Episode Art by Michael Shean-Jones.       Music by Janelle Avery, song Hammer it All, off the album My Songs.     Available from Tribeofnoise.com

Robert Jordan — How the Wheel of Time Creator Became an Icon of the Fantasy Genre James Oliver Rigney Jr. (better known by his pen name Robert Jordan) is best known for his breakout fantasy series "The Wheel of Time," which breathed new life into a genre that had grown somewhat stale since Tolkien took the scene by storm decades earlier. But before he wrote the several million words that would become his legacy, Rigney/Jordan served in Vietnam, became a nuclear engineer, and had a near-death experience that inspired him to finally pick up a pen. AND he was a good husband and human, y'all, which Tyler and Hannah were very excited to learn. Longtime listeners know we don't get to feature a lot of healthy relationships on this show, but you'll be delighted to hear about Rigney/Jordan's marriage to Harriet McDougal a woman who was, incidentally, also a huge part of shaping the "Wheel of Time" series. The Fantasy Inn is rather fond of fantasy books... it's in the name. But when and why do we read outside the fantasy genre? After all, there are so many truly incredible books out there. Please note that our reading skews toward fantasy, so this is not an episode that extensively explores other genres. Instead, we examine our reading habits, the appeal of other genres, and why we sometimes find it difficult to read outside our comfort zones. Note on Acronyms: We mention "TBRs" multiple times throughout this episode, which refers to "To Be Read" lists... essentially a list that some readers create to organize the books they plan to read in the future. Books Mentioned: Chaos Vector by Megan E. O'Keefe A Blade So Black by L.L. McKinney Severance by Ling Ma A Week to be Wicked by Tessa Dare Buried Deep by Margot Hunt Vita Nostra by Maryna and Serhiy Dyachenko The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo The House of Spirits by Isabel Allende The Eighth Life: (for Brilka) by Nino Haratischwili The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson The Unwomanly Face of War: An Oral History of Women in World War II by Svetlana Alexievich The Secret History of Wonder Woman by Jill Lepore Cinnamon and Gunpowder by Eli Brown Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty Lost Children Archive by Valeria Luiselli What Kings Ate and Wizards Drank by Krista D.
