"Even the most vanilla celebrity will do something stupid from time to time," admitted Woodie Hillyard. But Hillyard isn't working with the most vanilla celebrity -- he's working with Jake Paul. Paul is an online star with over 20 million subscribers on YouTube alone, known for wild publicity stunts. Most recently, Paul has taken up boxing, with an upcoming scheduled match with Mike Tyson later this month. But Paul, like many other creators, is trying to build consumer-facing brands as well. Hillyard is the CEO of W, Paul's personal care brand, which currently offers products like body wash, deodorant and shampoo. It launched earlier this year with distribution in Walmart. Hillyard knows a thing or two about growing brands alongside influencers. He's the former chief revenue officer of Safely, Kris Jenner's home cleaning startup. He joined this week's Modern Retail Podcast and spoke about the launch strategy of W and how it plans to grow in the coming year. In Hilliard's estimation, it's much harder to launch a new brand now than ever before. That's why he's so bullish on creator-led businesses. "During the heyday of DTC, when Warby Parker and Harry's and Casper were scaling, you could acquire customers for a pretty reasonable clip and drive a lot of traffic to your website," he said. "That arbitrage has gone away now. That new arbitrage, in my mind, is creator, because creators have this massive embedded audience of people who want to associate with them." According to Hillyard, W's launch has been a smashing success. Now, it has plans to go into more stores beyond Walmart. For now, that's probably online platforms like Amazon and GoPuff, but more physical stores are likely on the horizon as well. But, for now, the brand is dependent on the figurehead behind it. Hillyard said W plans to expand beyond Paul's shadow. But for now, he believes that Paul -- despite his headline-worthy shenanigans -- is the right person to launch a brand like W. "There's always a risk there," he said. "But I think the thing about Jake is he's one of the smartest business minds I've ever worked with."
On today's episode of Startup to Storefront, we sit down with Woodie Hillyard, the co-founder and CEO of W, the antiperspirant line created in collaboration with Jake Paul. Woodie is a seasoned leader in the Consumer & Retail industries, bringing with him a wealth of experience from his time as Head of eCommerce for Casper and Chief Revenue Officer at Safely, Kris Jenner's safe cleaning products brand. At Safely, he successfully launched and scaled the eCommerce business while securing nationwide placement in major retailers like Walmart and Bed Bath & Beyond. Before his journey building top consumer brands, Woodie worked in private equity and investment banking at Deutsche Bank and TowerBrook. Today, he's here to talk about W's mission to keep you fresh all day long with their antiperspirant that combines sweat protection with skin-nourishing ingredients like Magnesium and Vitamin D, all while leaving out harmful chemicals. Whether you're breaking a sweat or just living your everyday life, W's innovative formula is here to keep you smelling great around the clock. On this episode, you'll learn: • How Jake Paul harnessed the power of AI to break the internet and amplify his brand's reach in ways no one saw coming. • Why bar soap is making a major comeback in the personal care industry and how it's reshaping consumer habits. • How Jake Paul's massive following played a pivotal role in launching W, turning fans into loyal customers and building a brand with unstoppable momentum. Let's dive into Woodie's journey, how W came to life, and what it takes to build a successful brand in the highly competitive world of personal care.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.07.14.548994v1?rss=1 Authors: Mai, A., Hillyard, S. A., Strauss, D. J. Abstract: Recent work in the field of neural speech tracking provided evidence for a cortical representation of speech through superposition of event-related responses to acoustic edges, an idea closely related to the popular linear modeling approach to study cortical synchronization to speech via magneto- or electroencephalography (M/EEG). However, it is still unclear to what extent speech-evoked event-related potentials (ERPs) including well-established phenomena, e.g., the N1 selective attention effect, contribute to the regression-based analyses. Here, we addressed this question by analyzing an EEG dataset obtained during a simple multispeaker selective attention task in which participants were cued to attend to only one of two competing speakers. Segmenting the ongoing EEG based on acoustic edges, we were able to replicate previous findings of event-related responses to speech in MEG data with particularly clear P1-N1-P2 complexes. Crucially, speech-evoked ERPs exhibited significant effects of attention in line with the auditory N1 effect. Comparing speech-evoked ERPs to the linear regression results revealed two major findings. First, temporal response functions (TRFs) obtained from forward modeling were strongly temporally as well as spatially correlated with corresponding true ERPs. Second, effects of attention demonstrated by the stimulus reconstruction (SR) accuracies obtained from backward modeling appeared to be driven by a consistent generation of speech-evoked ERPs including the N1 effect. Taken together, our observations reveal a direct link between ERPs to acoustic edges in speech and the linear TRF and SR modeling techniques. We emphasize the enhancement in signal-to-noise ratio provided by repeatedly evoked N1 responses to be a critical factor in facilitating the tracking and subsequent higher-order processing of selectively attended speech. In addition to that, the findings imply a cortical speech representation through superimposed speech-evoked ERPs in accordance with recent arguments promoting the neural evoked-response speech tracking model. The incident, which happened on the banks of the Iresick Brook, led to a public works crew having to clear up the mounds of macaroni. Despite the bizarre nature of the incident, Old Bridge Mayor Owen Henry was pleased that the dumped material was not more harmful, such as tires or mattresses. The pasta had been dumped by a man who was cleaning out the home of his late parents on Hillyard Road. The couple apparently believed in keeping their pantry fully stocked. The pasta was dry and uncooked when it was discarded, but it was turned al dente when two inches of rain fell on central New Jersey on April 22-23. The incident highlights a wider problem of illegal dumping in rural areas. Mayor Owen Henry took the opportunity to call on residents not to dump their unwanted items in the woods. He pointed out that many items could be taken to recycling centers and that it made no sense to throw away items such as electronics, rugs, and metal. Henry acknowledged that Old Bridge regularly has issues with people illegally dumping waste in isolated areas. While the pasta dumper could be cited, Mayor Henry said the police would not actively pursue the case. Despite the illegality of the dumping, the incident was not hazardous, and there were more pressing issues for the detective bureau to focus on. Owen Henry was pleased that the incident was not worse, and he was happy to take on the task of clearing up the discarded pasta. Reference article: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/500-pounds-pasta-mysteriously-dumped-woods-new-jersey-town-rcna83084 Powered by Firstory Hosting

On today's episode I get to interview a neighbor. Well, at least a neighbor compared to so many of my other guests. Felecia Hillyard raises goats and flowers at her farm on Chicken Dinner Road in Caldwell, about 20 miles from my farm. She has a very interesting business model with enterprises that compliment each other. To hear Felecia tell her story, the first time she laid eyes on goats, behaving like goats behave, she was enamored. This got her started talking about how much she wanted to raise goats when she was at work, and it turned out that one of her colleagues name Jamie, raised goats of her own. Ultimately, Felecia purchased 12 goats from Jamie, and Jamie ended up being a close friend and mentor to her. Soon, Felecia leased the farm that she currently owns and started growing her herd. It wasn't long after that, that she recognized that between manure, bedding and hay waste the goats were leaving behind what would be great compost. She started making compost with the bi-product and needed something to do with it. This led her to start growing flowers. Felecia found a farm that was going out of business and selling a hoop house, and she bought it. After disassembling it at their location she transported it back to her farm and put it back together. Today, Felecia grows flowers in her goat compost, cuts them, arranges them and sells them at an unsupervised roadside stand in front of her place. She hasn't experienced any problems with theft, and since the beginning the bulk of her sales have changed from cash purchases to electronic purchases. It's always good to have our vision clarified and encouraged! Today's podcast is all about why Destination Church exists: "Helping people become joyfully devoted ambassadors of Jesus Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit, to the glory and delight of God our Father." We believe God is gathering real people from all walks of life who come just as we are, with all the distress, the debt, and the discontentment that life can throw at us. But God doesn't leave us that way! He is transforming people with problems into a people full of blessing and influence, and he is building something beautiful!

In this week's show we answer three questions from Matilda & Tabitha, Cleo and Magnus with help from special guest expert the picture book writer and illustrator Kim Hillyard. Kim has written two picture books, one about a brave and strong fly called Mabel who decides to climb a mountain and the other about a hamster called Ned, which is a story about kindness. Kim tells us about hamsters and their different kinds of poo and why they eat one kind usually at night! We have a competition to win a copy of Mabel and the Mountain and Ned: The Great Garden Race: a story about kindness. So listen to the podcast to find out how to enter! Our next question is from Cleo in Australia, we find out why poo is stinky, as well as how to make it LESS stinky by eating healthy food and doing exercise. Finally we find out how to turn poo into power! We talk about dairy farms that use manure to make biogas which is then turned into electricity to power local towns as well as how to use dehydrated poo to make power. Very useful! In this episode Martin interviews Anne Hillyard a wife and a mother if two kids. Anne shares her story on how she and her husband became financially free in four years through real estate investing. She share her story of when she started in 2006 after accidentally running into the Rich Dad poor dad book and then fell in love with cash flow. It took Anne two years after she read the book looking for deals before she found one that was cash flowing. She shares how in 2006 houses were over priced and she was having a very hard time to find properties that cash flowed but because she had educated herself as to what a good deal should look like she didn't just buy because everyone else was buying. Anne talks about how she was able to manage her fear of her first deal and why she was able to conquer it. Anne also talks about the importance of having a mentor and how a mentor can really accelerate your learning curve and how she advises that every one that's starting out should have a mentor. Anne also shares about her upcoming rental income summit event where she will be bringing a line up of speakers in the real estate investing space to teach you how to get started as an investor. Have you ever faced a seemingly impossible situation? Saul was in one and so was his son, Jonathan. They faced an enemy army that ridiculously outnumbered and "out-gunned" them. While Saul would struggle, Jonathan had an inspiring confidence in God that emboldened him and all those around him. As we look at 1 Samuel 13-14, imagine what can happen as we lift our eyes from our own ability or weakness to fix our hope on the God who cannot be hindered from saving, by many or by few! (Jon also shares some significant vision and direction for Destination Church Hillyard and Spokane in the days ahead.)
Do you have a dream? Can you dare to dream it? Or do you feel like you're trying to run on empty? Is it really true that Christians owe a debt of love to the people around us? Is it true that a local church owes a debt of love to the community around it? What would happen if we together embraced the Royal Law to love our neighbor as our self, and to "owe no one anything except to love each other" (Romans 13:8)? We just might turn the world upside down! Trevor Payne challenges us to freshly enjoy God's love for us that we can then love others as we have been loved.

Then we head back to 2010 for a clip where Luke (and Jen, by way of Skype) visit Sean’s apartment to check out what’s in his fridge, get the story on a dispute with his upstairs neighbor, and discuss Tila Tequila’s unfortunate treatment at the Gathering of the Juggalos. Additionally, Jen laments her fashion choices in the face of physical activity and shares the circumstances under which she got competitive with “European” children. Oh, and everyone should check out Naomi’s podcast, The Sunday Morning Experience. It’s a fan show about CBS Sunday Morning. (A show about a show? What kind of weirdos would be into something like that??)

The OUTSpoken Boyz Talk with Mayor CondonDavid A. Condon is the 44th Mayor of the City of Spokane. Born in February 1974, the same year that Spokane was preparing to shine on the world stage at the Expo ’74 World’s Fair, David grew up watching the fireworks off Cliff Drive on the 4th of July, helping his mom at the House of Charity, and spending Friday nights in the fall at Joe Albi Stadium watching high school football games. It was the Spokane that David grew up in, a place that was safe for families, fertile for businesses, and naturally stunning, that gave him a passion for this City. The youngest of ten children of Dr. John and Mrs. Carolu Condon, he was raised with a mind toward small business and service. After graduating from Gonzaga Prep School in 1992, he went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in Finance and Military Science from Boston College. His career has spanned everything from starting four of his own coffee shops during his college years in Boston, to managing a dental practice in Spokane, to working as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Eastern Washington’s U.S. Congresswoman, Cathy McMorris Rodgers. Additionally, David served in the 25th Infantry Division over in Schofield Barrack, Hi, the 62nd Medical Brigade at Fort Lewis, WA, and 396th Combat Support Hospital at Mann Reserve Center, located in Spokane’s historic Hillyard neighborhood.David’s passion for Spokane, coupled with his belief that it can be a model city for other municipalities, led to an ambitious plan that has focused on five key areas for Spokane including: Restoring public trust in law enforcement and enhancing community safety; creating an atmosphere to attract and retain jobs; promoting long-term fiscal health without undue burden on citizens; maintaining critical public infrastructure at an affordable price; and engaging citizens and improving the quality and character of our community.David and his wife Kristin are raising their three children in the Comstock neighborhood, not far from where David grew up. He is most passionate about Spokane, and making sure that this great City remains a place that his own children will want to stay and raise a family.Brady Walkinshaw 43rd Legislative District in SeattleRaised in a rural community in the Nooksack Valley in northeast Whatcom County, Brady grew up around many of the challenges and opportunities we face today.
