Main Topic: Seed Starting 4 Keys to Successful Seedlings Light, Light, Light A window isn't going to cut it—this is the #1 reason for failure. Use proper, full-spectrum grow lights (like Burrina lights) positioned uncomfortably close to seedlings. Keep lights on 12-16 hours per day for strong, stocky plants. If you don't have grow lights, be prepared for leggy seedlings. Soil Temperature Matters Too cold? Bad germination and weak seedlings. Ideal temp: 65-85 for many plants Use a seed heat mat (updated links below) or place trays in a warm spot like on top of the fridge. Consistent Moisture—Not Overwatering Keep soil evenly moist, not soggy. Bottom watering is best—use trays with no holes to create a DIY water table. Overwatering leads to weak roots and damping off. Underwatering even once can stunt growth for the life of the plant Potting Mix & Soil Biology If you're new, just buy a good quality seed-starting mix. Look for fine-textured, bark-free soil. Pro tip: Add a quart of soil from a well-run local garden to introduce beneficial microbes and integrate local soil biology. Advanced growers: Make your own with compost, biochar, worm castings, and indigenous microorganisms (IMO). Compost tea made from local soil is a fantastic boost. Soil Mix Don't mix your own unless you know what you're doing (WRONG ADVICE) Experiment while setting yourself up for success—but start with a 50/50 blend before committing fully. Learn from my mistakes Trays & Containers Deep pots (3-4 inches) = Stronger roots Plastic trays with no drainage holes work great for bottom watering. Solo cups are cheap and effective (poke a few drainage holes). Peat pucks: Can work, but I don't use them. Peat pots: Just don't. Choosing Seeds: Heirloom vs. Hybrid It's all okay! Pick what works for your system. Good seedling choices: Tomatoes, peppers, kale, chard, broccoli, lettuce, loofahs. Less ideal: Squash, cucumbers (direct sow if possible). Don't start indoors: Peas, beans, carrots, and most root crops. First Year: Choose 1-2 things, experiment, and don't stress if you buy starts. Keep going! Troubleshooting Germination: The Paper Towel Trick Use damp paper towels in a plastic bag to check seed viability before planting. Keeping Costs Down (While Buying Quality Equipment) Source second-hand greenhouse supplies from local growers. Attend local seed swaps (like the one here in February) for high-quality, adapted seeds. Consider bulk seed buys as a community.     Make it a great week!   GUYS!  The recent pandemic upped the ante on IT modernization as most organizations accelerated cloud deployments to support workforces that distributed overnight. Now as we emerge on the other side, many enterprises are reexamining their workload deployments in the face of escalating cloud costs. Indeed, Gartner® predicts that “by 2027, 85 percent of the workload placements made until 2022 will no longer be optimal, due to changing requirements.”1 As enterprises pursue more agile, mobile, and portable applications, IT leaders need to make quick decisions about where to house their workloads and, in so doing, reevaluate their cloud strategy. As organizations are rethinking their infrastructure strategy, they are looking to leverage new opportunities and innovations to gain agility, simplify management, drive operational efficiencies, and better equip their IT teams with the resources and skills needed to be competitive, all while keeping costs in check. The options are overwhelming. And if placing 100 percent of your workloads in the public cloud isn't the answer, what is?IT workload environments aren't “one size fits all.” Many IT leaders are finding success with hybrid IT infrastructure, where applications and data are spread and shared across a combination of on-premises, colocation, and public cloud environments, based on the unique characteristics, resource utilization, performance specifications, and security requirements of each application. Hybrid IT strategies offer a host of benefits, not the least of which is that IT leaders regain control of their data, making it easier to support a remote workforce, scale their operations, increase agility, and protect critical assets, all while being cost-efficient.Host: Andy WhitesideCo-host: Harvey GreenCo-host: Philip Sellers

This week in our Your Stock, Our Take segment we start by taking a listener question on The Joint Corp. (JYNT:NASDAQ), a franchisor of clinics and an operator of clinics in certain U.S. states. While still a small-cap, the company has more than 550 locations nationwide and over seven million patient visits annually, making The Joint Chiropractic a key leader in the U.S. chiropractic industry. Hit by the global shutdown, the business has a track record of growth and its stock continues to perform well. We take a dive into current valuations and see if the growth can continue. Our second Stock pick is Converge Technology Solutions (CTS: TSX-V), a Hybrid IT solution provider (ITSP) with operations in the United States and Canada focused on delivering high quality hardware, software, and managed services solutions to corporate and government institutions. On this special episode of The Futurum Tech Podcast - Interview Series host Daniel Newman welcomes Yaron Sverdlov, General Manager of SmartOps Division at Amdocs to discuss the impact COVID-19 has had on digital transformation and cloud migration of service providers and where we go from here.   Yaron and I explored how COVID-19 has impacted digital transformation within the telecommunications industry. Compared to companies in other industries, telecom companies were already well into digital transformation, providing the infrastructure we all need to stay connected. But almost overnight there was a greater demand for connection. Yaron shared that we are seeing telecom companies becoming more advanced, more digital, more open, and enabling a different level of support. Companies have had to move to a cloud environment that enables them to react much faster than before. And we likely will keep building on this moving forward.   Cloud adoption trends. Yaron shared that previously many telecom companies were laggards when it came to cloud adoption. The two biggest barriers to adoption were security risk and operating costs. Companies were used to storing everything on-prem where you could guarantee security and you had a capital expense. But now, these issues are becoming less relevant as it becomes more imperative to operate in the cloud. Yaron also shared that every company plans their journey differently and many now are in the middle of their migration process. It's an exciting time in the market.   Hybrid cloud management. Yaron explained that the immediate future for many telecom companies will be some sort of Hybrid IT architecture. These large enterprises have an extensive list of applications and programs that will be costly to migrate completely to the cloud so for the foreseeable future many will use on-prem and off-prem solutions including multiple public clouds. Managing the migration and the operation of this new architecture will be complex. Amdocs offers a Hybrid Cloud Management Platform which allows companies to manage all parts of the migration process.   The financial side of cloud migration. Yaron and I discussed that in addition to moving to a hybrid cloud architecture, service providers are moving FinOps tools to the cloud to be able to better serve customers. Companies are starting to build FinOps tools that use AI to determine how resources are being used and how that relates to KPIs. This will likely change the way we operate, helping companies be more efficient from end to end.   Building infrastructure on public clouds. Lastly, we explored the recent AWS Amdocs partnership announcement and their ability to run on any public cloud. By working with AWS and Azure, Amdocs understands how to get the most out of the cloud in a cost-effective way. These partnerships eliminate the barriers to adoption that many companies were dealing with. It's a smart move for everyone involved.   If you'd like to learn more about Amdocs, their partnerships, services, and product offerings, be sure to check out their website.   Disclaimer: This show is for information and entertainment purposes only.
