However, President Trump has already proven that his economic policies work. Notice in the conversation about Tariffs, not a single word made by the “economists” on the value of the dollar and how pertinent it is in the equation. When China and the EU devalue their currency to offset the impact of tariffs, the dollar value increases. This means it costs less dollars to import goods that come to the USA at a lower price (due to subsidies). Essentially, the diminished tariff impact is doubled. Beginning his interview with Bloomberg's John Micklethwait, Gates touched on the global vaccine rollout, complaining that in some “sub-Saharan African countries where the epidemic has not been as visible, demand for the vaccine is challenging to generate,” adding, “but we'll do the best we can on that.” Of course, the Gates Foundation head never mentioned how or why African nations with low Covid numbers would need to be vaccinated against the virus. Regarding the next year of Covid, Gates said, “The death rate and the severe disease rates ought to be coming down dramatically, and by next summer getting to be quite a bit lower than the average seasonal flu level is assuming there's no surprise variants, which right now is unlikely but can never be ruled out.” Micklethwait oddly said Covid “is like the flu” during the next question, which is strange considering the grief many people received for making similar comparisons last year. Next, Gates praised China for stopping Covid early, calling it a “huge blessing” before admitting the low amount of natural immunity in their population will force the communist nation to “drive their vaccination coverage up dramatically before they drop the wall” of strict Covid lockdowns and regulations. Micklethwait noted many people assume China is not telling the truth about their Covid numbers, but he said that “even if they fibbed a bit, they're still amazingly good.” The Bloomberg editor-in-chief mentioned that Singapore, New Zealand, and Australia have good covid numbers, but are starting to “open up” unlike the Chinese who will likely be locked down for another year. At one point during the interview, Gates complained that attendees of COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland were taking their masks off during the climate conference's receptions. Continuing, Micklethwait asked what the world can do to prevent another pandemic once Covid is brought down to flu-like levels. Gates said countries need to engage in “germ games” in order to fund more Big Pharma solutions to the next epidemic. http://globalreportage.org/2021/11/18/bill-gates-praises-chinas-covid-lockdowns-calls-for-who-surveillance-gestapo-more-globalism/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/global-reportage/support

During the pandemic, standardized tests were suspended in an entire range of educational institutions. Will these changes be temporary or permanent? More than 600 of these institutions switched from a mandatory to optional test for the 2020-21 application season, and many just flat out refused to accept a test at all in their application process. According to the editor in chief of the Princeton Review, “That is a tectonic change for many schools.” According to Smithsonian Magazine, “The pandemic sped up changes that were already afoot; even before Covid, more than 1,000 colleges had made the tests optional. Many had been turned off by the way the tests perpetuated socioeconomic disparities, limiting their ability to recruit a diverse freshman class.” Concerns about disparities in outcomes, at the core of this massive shift, have been behind Mayor Bill DeBlasio's agenda in New York City, including his past efforts to eliminate the entrance exam for the City's seven specialized high schools. While that effort has experienced a setback in the State Legislature, the fight will likely carry on by other political leaders. And more recently, the Mayor announced a plan to make sweeping changes to the gifted program in the City's elementary schools. There are similar efforts in other cities across the country. Joining today's conversation is Adrian Wooldridge, a longtime journalist at The Economist, where he is political editor and writes a column on British life and politics, and before that he penned the Schumpeter column on business, finance and management. He was previously the Washington bureau chief for The Economist, where he also wrote the Lexington column. Prior to his role in Washington, he was The Economist‘s West Coast correspondent, management correspondent and Britain correspondent. Adrian has written a number of books. His most recent books include “Capitalism in America: A History”, which he co-authored with Alan Greenspan, “The Wake-Up Call: Why the Pandemic Has Exposed the Weakness of the West, and How to Fix It”, which he co-wrote with John Micklethwait of Bloomberg News, and just out this year: “The Aristocracy of Talent: How Meritocracy Made the Modern World”. I've been wanting to explore the world crypto and blockchain technologies could build on the show for a while. In certain ways, I'm an optimist: I think these technologies matter, and many of them will work. In other ways, I'm a skeptic: I'm unconvinced that their wide adoption will lead to the glittering, decentralized digital world that many crypto proponents imagine. So this is a crypto conversation that goes way beyond Bitcoin. It's about what will happen when we build the foundation for truly digital economies, with digital money, digital goods, and digital ownership. It's about technologies that could unlock a renaissance of creativity or an orgy of commercialization. Or both. And it's about whether we are mistaking problems of power for problems of technology, and what might happen if we fix the technologies without changing the power structures. As everyone in this debate agrees, we made a lot of mistakes with the internet we have. How do we avoid them on the internet we're building? My guest today is Katie Haun. Haun is a general partner at the venture firm A16Z, also known as Andreesen-Horowitz. She's a former Supreme Court clerk and federal prosecutor who has focused on cybercrime and prosecuted corrupt agents involved in Silk Road, the first big darknet market. So she saw the dark side of crypto first, and now, at A16Z, she's a leader of one of the biggest crypto venture funds there is. So this is a conversation about the world crypto might create, conducted with as little technical jargon as we could manage. Enjoy!I also want to note that this will be the last episode I host until January. I'm going on paternity leave for the next few months, and we're going to have an absolutely all-star lineup of guest hosts while I'm gone. That lineup will include Jamelle Bouie, Ross Douthat, Tressie McMillan Cottom, Nicole Hemmer, Heather McGhee, David Brooks, Julia Galef, and the one, the only, Rogé Karma. I'm excited to be a listener and trust me, you should be too. One last bit of housekeeping: The Times's Opinion section is looking for an editorial assistant to work with Michelle Goldberg and me on fact-checking our columns and doing some editorial research and clerical work. This is a great, entry-level role at The Times. John Micklethwait is editor-in-chief of Bloomberg News, and Adrian Wooldridge is political editor of the Economist, and author of their Bagehot column. In their latest book they analyse the disastrous failure of many western countries to control the Coronavirus, and what it exposes about the weaknesses of their systems of government. It is a wake up call to learn from the more successful responses of countries like Singapore or South Korea. What are the lessons in better government the west can now learn from the east? To discuss the UK's capacity to learn such lessons, and the likelihood of its doing so, they are joined by Philip Rycroft CB, former Head of the UK Governance Group in the Cabinet Office, Permanent Secretary in DExEU, and now Visiting Professor at Edinburgh University.

The Economist’s Adrian Wooldridge and John Mickelthwait argue that authoritarian East Asian governments have outperformed Western governments in their response to the stress test of the COVID-19 pandemic and, as a result, “In terms of geopolitics, the crisis has left the West weaker and Asia stronger.” As the public’s trust in government’s abilities has declined over the last fifty years, they point to excessive regulation stifling innovation and a lawyer-driven political culture versus science and engineering. “Leviathan overreached, promising more than it could deliver.” Adrian Wooldridge is The Economist’s political editor and writes the “Bagehot” column on British life and politics. From 2000 to 2010 he was based in Washington, DC as bureau chief and “Lexington columnist” and served as West Coast correspondent, management correspondent and Britain correspondent. Wooldridge is the author of nine previous books, including “Capitalism in America” co-written with Alan Greenspan and six co-written with John Micklethwait. Wooldridge earned a doctorate in history from Oxford University, where he was a Fellow of All Souls College. . . Do you believe in the importance of international education and connections? The Covid-19 pandemic has revealed that governments matter again, that competent leadership is the difference between living and dying. A few governments proved adept at handling the crisis while many others failed. Are Western governments healthy and strong enough to keep their citizens safe from another virulent virus—and protect their economies from collapse? Is global leadership passing from the United States to Asia—and particularly China? The Wake-Up Call: Why the Pandemic Has Exposed the Weakness of the West, and How to Fix It (HarperVia, 2020) addresses these urgent questions. Journalists and longtime collaborators John Micklethwait and Adrian Wooldridge identify the problems Western leaders face, and outline a detailed plan to help them become more vigilant, better prepared, and responsive to disruptive future events. The problems that face us are enormous; as The Wake-Up Call makes clear, governments around the world must re-engineer the way they operate to successfully meet the challenges ahead. All over the world citizens have surrendered basic freedoms to the state in order to be protected from Covid-19. Good government has become not just important but a matter of life and death. But the assumption that Western governments have any advantage over the rest of the world is questionable: ask yourself, where would you feel safer today – in Los Angeles and Barcelona or in Singapore and Seoul? The pandemic has exposed the weaknesses of the West, argue bestselling authors John Micklethwait and Adrian Wooldridge, and it is accelerating a shift in the balance of power to the East. While Western democracies have been consumed by in-fights such as the battle over Brexit or partisan showdowns in Congress, countries such as South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, as well as China, have been stealing a march economically, technologically and, arguably, politically in recent years.Earlier this month, Micklethwait and Wooldridge came to Intelligence Squared to talk about the themes of their new book, 'The Wake Up Call'. What are the lessons to be learned from the pandemic? Should we recognise, as many on the Left maintain, that big government is back for good and should be expanded permanently to deal with other global crises? Or should a balance be struck between collectivism on the one hand, and freedom and entrepreneurialism on the other? And how can the West respond creatively to the pandemic, reverse decades of decline, and ensure that China does not overtake the US in the struggle for global leadership? To find out more about the book click here: https://bit.ly/3ounpKl Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/intelligencesquared. The pandemic has exposed serious weaknesses in Western governments, according to John Micklethwait, editor-in-chief of Bloomberg and former editor of The Economist. In The Wake-Up Call he argues that the Covid crisis has accelerated a shift in balance of power from the West to East. Micklethwait tells Andrew Marr that unless the West can respond more creatively to what is happening, the prospect of a new Eastern-dominated world order, with China at the centre, will be inevitable. But the historian Rana Mitter argues that China is increasingly presenting itself as the creator and protector of the international order, rather than its threat. In China’s Good War he explores how the country is revisiting its role as an Allied Force in World War II, to assert newfound confidence abroad and to shape a new nationalism at home. And Katya Adler, the BBC's Europe Editor, looks at the problems facing the EU, including the relationship of China and the impact of coronavirus. She assesses how Macron, Merkel, Ursula von der Leyen and other leaders have handled this year's challenges. Producer: Hannah Sander

In the sixteenth century 300,000 people lived in the imperial quarter of Beijing, which housed the bureaucracy of the Chinese state. At the time Europe had only three cities—London, Naples, and Paris—with as many residents. European governments were by contrast small and static. Over the past five hundred years, partly in response to the grand scale of government power in Asia and the Islamic world, Western nations have gone through a series of revolutions in government: from Thomas Hobbes' imagining of the modern nation state to liberal reforms advocated by John Stuart Mill and William Gladstone and the advent of the welfare state. Lewis Lapham talks to John Micklethwait, co-author, with Adrian Wooldridge, of The Fourth Revolution: The Global Race to Reinvent the State, about the history of government in the West and rethinking the machinery of the state in the twenty-first century. In this episode, Crabb and Sales visit the Archibald Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW. In keeping with tradition they are interrupted not once, but twice during the course of the episode. Despite every setback, they manage to talk about sex, death, art and books. Plus it suddenly dawns on our own odd couple that they are not as alike as they seem. Dysfunctional government: It’s become a cliché, and most of us are resigned to the fact that nothing is ever going to change. As John Micklethwait and Adrian Wooldridge show us, that is a seriously limited view of things. In fact, there have been three great revolutions in government in the history of the modern world. The West has led these revolutions, but now we are in the midst of a fourth revolution, and it is Western government that is in danger of being left behind.
