The Canadian Medical Cannabis Program has been available for more than two decades, yet the process of obtaining cannabis as medicine remains very cumbersome. In comparison, Recreational Cannabis, seen as a substance of misuse, is easy to acquire. When people express an interest in trying cannabis as a medicine to their health care team, many health practitioners simply direct their patients toward the Rec market knowing (or maybe not) the restrictions the Cannabis Act places on budtenders. Budtenders cannot discuss health conditions with customers. While many health professionals continue to ignore the highly regulated medicinal cannabis system, a group of entrepreneurs calling themselves Cannabis Coaches, are filling the need. In this episode we learn how certified Cannabis Coach Terese Bowors started a small business educating people about medicinal cannabis. We come to understand how a group of non-regulated health educators are developing their own Standards of Practice.Terese Bowors - Cannabis Wellness Coach - WebsiteTerese Bowors- LinkedIn(Yes we got a SOCAN membership to use this song all legal and proper like)Music by:Falling Through by Prophet - SpotifyAdditional Music:Desiree Dorion desireedorion.comMarc Clement - FacebookTranscripts, papers and so much more at: reefermed.ca

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Cynthia Reeves, author of the book The Last Whaler. Cynthia Reeves is the author of three books of fiction: the Arctic novel The Last Whaler; the novel in stories Falling Through the New World, winner of Gold Wake Press's Fiction Award; and the novella Badlands, winner of Miami University Press's Novella Prize. Her short stories, essays, and poetry have appeared widely. Most recently, her short story “The Last Glacier” was featured in If the Storm Clears, an anthology that concerns the sublime in the natural world. Her lifelong interest in the Arctic began in childhood reading tales of doomed Arctic explorers. But it was her participation in the 2017 Arctic Circle Summer Solstice Expedition, which sailed Svalbard's western shores, as well as three subsequent residencies in Longyearbyen and a trip around Iceland's Ring Road, that have inspired her writing since then. Cynthia earned an MFA from Warren Wilson College and taught creative writing at Bryn Mawr and Rosemont Colleges. Find out more at cynthiareeveswriter.com. In my book review, I stated The Last Whaler is a historical fiction that looks at the will to survive in the harshest circumstances. We follow Astrid through her journal entries, while we follow her husband, Tor, through his journal entries ten years later. The back and forth allows the reader to see Astrid struggles in real time as well as Tor's reflections - and all the things he missed. Astrid is strong-willed and vibrant. She is educated and dedicated. She wants - very much - to move on beyond a tragedy. A summer spent with her husband, a whaler, on a remote island, seems to be the ticket. She will revive her relationship. She will study the flora. She will find forgiveness for herself. Except, the Arctic has other ideas. This story, beautifully told, explores mental illness, religious faith, man's impact on the environment, and the solace of storytelling. You won't want to miss it. After losing their young son in a tragic accident, Astrid, a Norwegian botanist specializing in Arctic flora, decides to join her husband, Tor, at a remote whaling station in the Arctic, where he spends every whaling season hunting belugas. In heartfelt journal entries, Astrid describes being stranded in a whaling hut through the dark season of 1937-38. She writes about the miscalculations, the terrible weather, the fear of polar bears and freezing to death, the people they've met on their journey, Tor's crew, and her slow disintegration after giving birth to another son, alone in the freezing, dark hut while Tor hunts for food. We know that Tor survived the ordeal, because he is reading Astrid's journal filled with letters to their dead son. The Last Whaler (Regal House, 2024) is a gorgeous, well-researched historical novel about endurance, isolation, the environment, the Nazi incursion into Norway, the pain of postpartum depression, and the human will to survive. Cynthia Reeves is the author of two previous books of fiction: the novel in stories Falling Through the New World (2024), winner of Gold Wake Press's Fiction Award; and the novella Badlands (2007), winner of Miami University Press's Novella Prize. Her fiction, essays, and poetry have appeared widely. Most recently, her short story “The Last Glacier” was included in If the Storm Clears (Blue Cactus Press, 2024), an anthology of speculative literature that concerns the sublime in the natural world. Her lifelong interest in the Arctic began in childhood reading tales of doomed Arctic explorers. But it was her participation in the 2017 Arctic Circle Summer Solstice Expedition, which sailed Svalbard's western shores, as well as two subsequent residencies in Longyearbyen, that have inspired her writing since then. In August 2024, she circumnavigated Svalbard aboard the icebreaker MV Ortelius carrying a hundred artists, scientists, and crew. A Hawthornden Fellow, Cynthia has also been awarded residencies to Vermont Studio Center and Art & Science in the Field. Gail Marlene Schwartz is a relationship artist, musician and dual U.S./Canadian citizen. Gail uses her writing as a way to explore who she is and to connect with others. All of her writing has emotional resonance with her. My favorite line from our interview: "Mess and success can co-exist," she said, as she defined what she believes to be a healthy family, i.e., one whose members are willing to be introspective, create trust and be vulnerable with each other. She strives to become her best version by keeping a focus on her own choices in any situation, asking herself, "What can I do to grow?" An award-winning author, Gail has penned a new Jewish, queer, coming-of-age novel that fearlessly explores the difficult topics of mental health, suicide and addiction. Inspired by her own journey with anxiety and healing from childhood trauma, “Falling Through the Night” (Demeter Press, Feb. 25, 2024) captures many of the growing pains of young, queer folks as they struggle to find their footing and independence in adulthood, to which much of Gail can deeply relate. In this episode and in her latest book, Gail touches on: --How the story takes inspiration from Gail's own relationship with her mother, her personal struggles with anxiety, and the suicide of her childhood best friend  --The ways in which classification and labeling can be helpful and harmful in terms of mental illnesses  --The importance of found family and how the LGBTQ+ community as a whole has redefined what it means to choose your family  --The complex decision to put a child up for adoption or to adopt a child, and the trauma that can come with those decisions --The representation of Judaism, a faith that Gail shares with her main character Falling Through the Night is a deeply moving novel aimed to empathetically demonstrate the complexities when healing from trauma while also showcasing the joy and community of queer folks, topics that I think are in alignment with Becoming Your Best Version podcast listeners. Gail is co-author of the books My Sister's Girlfriend and The Loudest Bark (Rebel Mountain Press) and co-editor of the forthcoming essay collection, Boyhood Reimagined: Stories of Queer Moms Raising Sons (Motina Books). She is a founding editor of Hotch Potch Literature and Art, a collaborative online magazine, and also a freelance editor, writing coach, and writing instructor at the Community College of Vermont. Gail lives in Montpelier, Vermont with her partner, Erin; she spends every other weekend in Montreal with her ex, who is still her best friend, Lucie, and their teenage son, Alexi. ABOUT THE PUZZLE MASTER Reality and the supernatural collide when an expert puzzle maker is thrust into an ancient mystery—one with explosive consequences for the fate of humanity—in this suspenseful thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of Angelology“In short: The Puzzle Master = (The Da Vinci Code + The Silent Patient + sprinkle of Stephen King) x gorgeous writing.”—Angie Kim, author of Miracle CreekAll the world is a puzzle, and Mike Brink—a celebrated and ingenious puzzle constructor—understands its patterns like no one else. Once a promising Midwestern football star, Brink was transformed by a traumatic brain injury that caused a rare medical condition: acquired savant syndrome. The injury left him with a mental superpower—he can solve puzzles in ways ordinary people can't. But it also left him deeply isolated, unable to fully connect with other people.Everything changes after Brink meets Jess Price, a woman serving thirty years in prison for murder who hasn't spoken a word since her arrest five years before. When Price draws a perplexing puzzle, her psychiatrist believes it will explain her crime and calls Brink to solve it. What begins as a desire to crack an alluring cipher quickly morphs into an obsession with Price herself. She soon reveals that there is something more urgent, and more dangerous, behind her silence, thrusting Brink into a hunt for the truth. The quest takes Brink through a series of interlocking enigmas, but the heart of the mystery is the God Puzzle, a cryptic ancient prayer circle created by the thirteenth-century Jewish mystic Abraham Abulafia. As Brink navigates a maze of clues, and his emotional entanglement with Price becomes more intense, he realizes that there are powerful forces at work that he cannot escape. Ranging from an upstate New York women's prison to nineteenth-century Prague to the secret rooms of the Pierpont Morgan Library, The Puzzle Master is a tantalizing, addictive thriller in which humankind, technology, and the future of the universe itself are at stake. Whether you live in the USA or have just been watching the circus from afar, chances are that you agree: “polarization” dominates descriptions of the social landscape. Judging from the news alone, one might think the States have never been so painfully divided…yet nuanced public polls, and new behavioral models, suggest another narrative: the United States is largely moderate, and people have much more in common with each other than they think. There’s no denying our predicament: cognitive biases lead us to “out-group” one another even when we might be allies, and the game of politics drives a two-party system into ever-more-intense division, until something has to give. But the same evidence from social science offers hope, that we might find a way to harness our collective thinking processes for the sake of everyone and row together toward a future big enough to hold our disagreements.Welcome to COMPLEXITY, the official podcast of the Santa Fe Institute. I’m your host, Michael Garfield, and every other week we’ll bring you with us for far-ranging conversations with our worldwide network of rigorous researchers developing new frameworks to explain the deepest mysteries of the universe. In this episode we talk to SFI External Professor Henrik Olsson and SFI Complexity Postdoctoral Fellow, Omidyar Fellow, and Baird Hurst Scholar Vicky C. In a conversation that couldn’t be more timely, we ask: How can we leverage an understanding of networks for better political polling and prediction? At the beginning of the homelessness epidemic in the 1980s, Josephine Ensign was a young, white, Southern, Christian wife, mother, and nurse running a medical clinic for the homeless in the heart of the South. Through her work and intense relationships with patients and co-workers, her worldview was shattered after losing her job, family, and house—and she became homeless herself. Ensign joined us decades later to tell her story through her book Catching Homelessness: A Nurse’s Story of Falling Through the Safety Net. With intense empathy and deep human perspective, she highlighted the ways her experience of being homeless reconstituted her life with altered views on homelessness and on the healthcare system. Ensign provided a piercing firsthand look at the homelessness industry, nursing, and our country’s health care safety net. Join Ensign as she reflects on how her understanding of homelessness has changed her work, perspective, and life experiences—and changed her. SUMMARY Josephine Ensign shares her own story in Catching Homelessness: A Nurse’s Story of Falling Through the Safety Net. Even though she’s a nurse trained to keep an emotional distance from her patients “to prevent being so overwhelmed that it cripples the provision of proper health care,” Ensign works tirelessly to treat and keep track of the homeless in the South during the beginning of the homelessness epidemic in the 1980s. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to even her close friends, the well-educated Christian wife and nurse Ensign becomes homeless herself, living on the edge under the noses of the privileged. Now, decades later, Ensign writes this medical memoir “to provide a framework for the empathy necessary to create positive change for people pushed to the margins.” KEY POINTS We need to learn to ask ourselves why people are homeless; most don’t choose that lifestyle. Many homeless keep pets (mostly dogs, sometimes cats; some even keep rats snakes, or even crickets) to provide protection and company. Foot problems almost universal among the homeless since they often have to walk places. Coupled with unsanitary conditions and inclement weather, socks and shoes wear out quickly and feet contract infections and get frostbite. Identifying and dealing with childhood trauma can help prevent mental illness and subsequent homelessness that can often follow. “Voluntary poverty” – choosing to live in spartan conditions similar to those of the homeless in an effort to better understand that demographic. QUOTES FROM ENSIGN “Homelessness is exhausting and soul-sucking…[It] is a type of deep illness, a term coined by sociologist Arthur Frank for an illness that leaves you feeling dislocated, an illness that casts a shadow over your life. That shadow never completely goes away.” “The business of nursing brings us into the messy swampland of human suffering, illness, and death.” “People do not want to have to depend on handouts, on the kindness of strangers.” “Sometimes I felt that I was literally and figuratively putting Band-Aids on the problem of homelessness, patching people up, and sending them back out into a life that was breaking them again. I was frustrated that I couldn’t do more to address the bigger issues that were causing homelessness.” “Charity care further fragments and separates us as members of society—sorts us into haves and have-nots, into worthy and unworthy citizens. Charity care perpetuates poverty.” “Our country’s healthcare safety net is built on the principles of poverty medicine.” How to help the homeless: “Respond with a smile and a kind word—even if it is ‘No—sorry’ when you are asked for a handout…There’s nothing worse than for a person to be ignored.” BUY Catching Homelessness: A Nurse's Story of Falling Through the Safety Net RECOMMENDATION Check out the first seminal book about homelessness written by Nels Anderson who, as a boy, was taken in by a family. They make Celtic Rings & Jewelry for Men & Women and ship for Free all over the world. Amber Rodland was excited to hear about our sponsor because she wrote: I have always had a love for all things Celtic. We were never a fan of traditional wedding bands. My husband searched the web and found My Irish Jeweler. We fell in love with the Book of Kells band and got it in platinum, and we love them! I cannot say enough about the attention to detail put into these bands. In fact, the jeweler actually called us from Dublin, Ireland to confirm our sizes. The rings are very unique and a great reflection of us as a couple. We'll have been married for three years this coming Samhain, and I still get compliments on our bands. They are so beautiful and well-crafted. I recommend My Irish Jeweler to my friends looking for unique jewelry with a Celtic flair. But it's not just about wedding rings. My Irish Jeweler has a great range of Celtic Cross Pendants, Claddagh Jewelry and other super gift ideas. Always made in Ireland. Always free shipping. Episode 72: In today's Social Work Podcast, episode 72, Psychodynamic therapy with vulnerable and oppressed populations, I speak with social work professor and author, Joan Berzoff. Dr. Berzoff addressed this issue in great detail in her 2012 edited text, Falling Through the Cracks: Psychodynamic Practice with Vulnerable and Oppressed Populations, published by Columbia University Press. In today's interview I asked Dr. Berzoff, what makes psychodynamic theory a valuable or useful approach for working with vulnerable, at-risk, and oppressed populations? Why should therapists be concerned about that which is symbolic in a client's life? Dr. Berzoff talked about the value of curiosity in psychotherapy; the use of insight; applications of psychodynamic theory to school-based programs; why don't people think of basic social work practice as psychodynamic; and how to conceptualize the role of insight-oriented work with clients whose basic needs are not being met. You can read a transcript of today's interview at http://www.socialworkpodcast.com.
