Three-quarters of small to medium enterprises in Clare believe Artificial Intelligence could transform their business. A new report from Google Customer Solutions has found, however, that most firms are not using the technology due to concerns over costs and skill shortages. It comes ahead of an event being hosted by Google and the Local Enterprise Office for SMEs at the Radison Red in Galway tomorrow. Google Customer Solutions Managing Director Karen Stolberg says the demand is clear.
Irish small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) overwhelmingly believe artificial intelligence (AI) can benefit their business, yet most are still struggling to translate that opportunity into action, according to new research released today. The study, commissioned by Google in partnership with Amárach Research and based on a survey of 400 Irish SMEs, shows that while 80% believe AI can positively impact their business and 65% expect it to drive growth in 2026, adoption remains limited. The findings indicate a significant confidence and capability gap. The main barriers preventing greater AI adoption include fear of making mistakes (30%), lack of skills (27%) and cost (24%), with many business leaders unsure of where to start (16%). More than half (57%) believe they are behind competitors in adopting AI, while 50% are concerned their business could be left behind without it. The research also highlights that micro-businesses, longer-established firms and non-exporters are most at risk of falling behind, underscoring the need for targeted, practical support that meets SMEs' varying needs. The research is being launched today at an event hosted by Google Ireland at The Foundry as part of Local Enterprise Week. In partnership with the Local Enterprise Office (LEO) network, Google also announced the launch of AI Works for Ireland, a series of complementary, face-to-face regional events aimed at equipping SMEs with practical AI skills for business. The series begins today in Dublin, followed by events in Galway (April 30th), Cork (14th May) and Monaghan (28th May). Each event will feature insights from Google AI experts on how SMEs can use AI to drive growth, creativity and efficiency, alongside dedicated AI workshops offering support for founders and business leaders. As part of the initiative, Google and the Local Enterprise Office network are providing up to 10,000 AI scholarships to workers across Ireland. Delivered through Coursera, the Google AI Professional Certificate offers practical training across more than 20 real-world AI business use cases, from data analysis and content creation to customer communications. This research and initiative follows the release of the government's National Digital and AI strategy, which includes key pillars to empower people, workers and businesses to develop cutting-edge skills and foster digital and AI literacy, alongside growing a digitally innovative and competitive enterprise sector within Ireland. Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transformation, Niamh Smyth, TD, said: "AI has the potential to boost productivity and enhance competitiveness across Ireland's SME Sector. As we advance the ambitions of the recently published National Digital and AI Strategy, a key priority of my department is to fast?track enterprise adoption digital and AI technologies. Initiatives like this one, delivered in partnership with Google and the Local Enterprise Offices, are vital in ensuring that businesses of all sizes, in every region, have the skills and confidence they need to adopt AI at pace." Vanessa Hartley, Head of Google Ireland, said: "Irish SMEs are clear about the opportunity AI presents, but this research shows many are being held back by uncertainty rather than ambition. AI Works for Ireland is about closing that gap – providing practical, trusted support that helps businesses move from awareness to action, and from experimentation to real impact. At Google, we are committed to helping people and businesses across Ireland build the skills they need to succeed in an AI-powered economy. Through initiatives like this, we want to ensure SMEs have access to high-quality training, tools and expertise that empower them to grow, innovate and compete with confidence." Kieran Comerford, Chair of the Local Enterprise Offices, said: "Local Enterprise Week is all about helping businesses and entrepreneurs improve and showing them the resources available to them....

It may be the smallest county in Connacht, the smallest by population in Ireland, with the smallest stretch of beach on the Wild Atlantic Way, but in their latest episode the Irish Stew podcasters learn that Leitrim is capitalizing on its offer of a great quality of life, relative affordability, entrepreneurial energy, appeal to a more mobile workforce, and its “slow adventure” approach experiencing its natural allure. Arriving in Carrick-on-Shannon, the cohosts head to the offices of the Leitrim County Council, the local government organization committed to building an economically strong, creative and inclusive county, making Leitrim the best place to live, to work and visit.Though County Council Chief Executive Joseph Gilhooly opened the doors to Leitrim for Irish Stew, for the interview he gave the floor to his able lieutenants, Director of Services David Minton and tourism officer Sinead McDermott. You'll hear how Leitrim's economy is strong on small-scale entrepreneurship and growing sectors like fintech, food innovation, engineering, and renewables. They also detail the County Council's integrated support system including the Local Enterprise Office, The Hive incubation hub, and the Carrick Campus for growing firms. They share that tourists from across Ireland, the U.S, and Europe come for Leitrim's authenticity, natural beauty, slower pace, farm to table food, tranquillity, and eco-tourism. They sense that climate change is subtly shifting European travel patterns northward, making Ireland a “cool” alternative to overheated southern Europe. With Leitrim's tourism value proposition top-of-mind, the podcasters head to the Landmark Hotel to meet with Sales and Marketing Manager Ciara Maxwell, who came to Leitrim for a one-year work experience 15 years ago and never left, which tells you everything you need to know about the pull of this place. She tells how founders John and Ciaran Kelly envisioned a new riverside hotel that would be a real landmark looking out over “The Marina Capital of Ireland” and in the center of Carrick-on-Shannon's lively weekend nightlife of pubs, shows, and restaurants. There's more tastes of Leitrim on Irish Stew next week, including the story of the Malaysian chef who's upending the local food scene, the new woodland lodging hideaway set on 100 acres of Irish history, and the slow adventure e-bike option for traversing the Jackalope Trail to Drumshanbo, home of The Shed Distillery of P.J. One in four Irish women (24%) would like to start their own business, compared to 30% of men, according to new research conducted by Amárach Research on behalf of the Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs) to mark National Women's Enterprise Day (NWED), taking place nationwide today. The research highlights that while ambition among women remains strong, significant barriers continue to hold many back, particularly financial fear, confidence, and caring commitments. Almost half of women (45%) say fear of financial instability is stopping them from starting a business, compared with 35% of men. Meanwhile, three in ten women (30%) say a lack of confidence holds them back, and one in four (24%) report that caring commitments prevent them from pursuing their entrepreneurial ambitions - more than double the rate among men (10%). The research also shows that interest in starting a business among women varies significantly by age. Younger women are the most likely to aspire to start a business, with ambition highest among those aged 18-24 (36%), before gradually declining among those aged 25-44 (28%). This drops further among women aged 45-64 (18%) and is lowest among those aged 65 and over (8%). Niamh Smyth, T.D., Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transformation, said, "National Women's Enterprise Day (NWED) is not just for those women who currently own or run a business, it's for all women who have a business idea and need that encouragement to take that first step. I understand the barriers faced by Women in business and regularly meet advocacy groups that share ideas on how to address some of these barriers, including issues such as underrepresentation, access to networks, access to capital, and mentorship and role models. Tackling these barriers is what makes National Women's Enterprise Day so important, and I'm proud of the role the Local Enterprise Offices have played in this. The cumulative effect of NWED has been to cultivate an entire generation of female entrepreneurs empowered with the skills, belief and support to start and grow successful businesses. Today places a spotlight on women in enterprise and boosts the visibility of women in business. This is vitally important for the next generation of female Entrepreneurs to view themselves as businesswomen" Aileen McGrath, Chair of National Women's Enterprise Day, said: "This research shows there is real ambition among Irish women to start their own business, but for too many, barriers still stand in the way. Confidence, financial concerns, and caring commitments continue to feature strongly as barriers, and that's exactly what National Women's Enterprise Day and the Local Enterprise Offices are here to help address. "Through the Local Enterprise Office network, women can access practical supports, expert mentoring, and financial advice to help turn ideas into action. Whether it's hearing from another woman who's done it, building new skills, or learning where to find funding and support, National Women's Enterprise Day shows that starting a business is possible and that no woman must do it alone. "NWED is about empowerment and reminding women that supports are there in every local authority across the country and that the Local Enterprise Offices are ready to help on the journey. The ambition is clear, our role is to help remove the barriers and give women the confidence, tools, and encouragement to take that first step." Now in its 19th year, National Women's Enterprise Day is organised by the Local Enterprise Offices with 15 events taking place across the country, bringing together some of Ireland's most inspiring and successful female entrepreneurs. Some of those involved in the events across the country this year include broadcaster and entrepreneur, Norah Casey, international human rights lawyer Joanna Frivet, author and psychologist, Dr Katriona O'Sullivan, designer Helen Steele, entrepreneur Oonagh O'Hagan, home and food influenc...

Local Enterprise Week is coming up Monday, March 3rd to Friday, March 7th! Joining is Head of Enterprise at Local Enterprise Office Wexford, Breege Cosgrave
Minister of Enterprise, Trade and Employment Peter Burke, T.D., has announced the annual results of the Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs) for 2024, showing that companies supported by the Local Enterprise Office Fingal created 197 net new jobs in 2024. This marks an increase from the 178 jobs created in 2023. The net jobs created by Local Enterprise Office Fingal-supported clients in 2024 was 197, which takes into account companies that amalgamated, ceased trading, and those that transferred to Enterprise Ireland. The total national figures for the Local Enterprise Offices across the country were also announced, with the LEOs now financially supporting 39,541 jobs across 7,176 companies. This represents the highest number of jobs supported by the Local Enterprise Offices since their inception in 2014. In 2024, 7,104 new jobs were created by LEO client companies, with a net job creation figure of 2,459. This represents a 7% increase nationally compared to 2023. The LEOs also continue to provide substantial funded supports to thousands of other small businesses nationwide through programs such as the Energy Efficiency Grant, Lean for Business, Green for Business, along with training and mentoring. Minister Peter Burke, T.D., said: "The 31 Local Enterprise Offices continue to be the primary anchor for economic development in communities across the country. Our LEOs ensure that every small business, regardless of location, has a support system available to them, no matter what their concern. The continued broadening of the Local Enterprise Office remit highlights the value they add to our SME community. It has never been easier for a small business to access support through their Local Enterprise Office, including companies looking to digitalise their operations, take their first steps in sustainability, or identify new markets. These areas will be key pillars going forward to ensure our small businesses can continue to compete both at home and abroad. Government is firmly committed to supporting them all the way." The Local Enterprise Offices were at the forefront of supporting small businesses across the country in 2024, helping thousands secure funding, upskill, and avail of support to become more sustainable and competitive. New supports, such as the Grow Digital Voucher and Market Explorer Grant, were also introduced to help small businesses digitalise and explore new markets. Oisín Geoghegan, Head of Enterprise at Local Enterprise Office Fingal, said: "The results announced today are a testament to Ireland's small business community. When faced with adversity, they have adapted, pivoted, upskilled, and did whatever it took to sustain themselves. The figures show that companies have seen the opportunities in the challenging trading conditions they have faced. The Local Enterprise Offices across the country have gone above and beyond in their support of small businesses, but there is renewed optimism. We are seeing new opportunities for Irish businesses, and as always, during tough economic periods, we see new ideas and companies emerge and flourish. This year will be no different, and as we continue to work closely with Enterprise Ireland and the local authorities to ensure our small businesses get the best possible support, there are certainly green shoots emerging across the country." Carol Gibbons, Head of Entrepreneurship, Regions and Local Enterprise at Enterprise Ireland, said: "2024 was a challenging year for business, and these very positive employment results are a testament to the dedication and commitment of the LEO network across the country and the ambitious businesses it supports. Key to the success of the LEO network is the close relationship it fosters with both start-up and scaling businesses across communities. It is particularly encouraging to see the breadth of new jobs created across the country and showing that if you want to start and scale a company, the supports are there to do it from anywhere in Ir...

Works is underway to make Clare one of the global capitals of the Aerospace Sector. Clare County Council has hosted a delegation from nine European countries as part of an initiative aimed at exploring new opportunities for Aerospace in Shannon and the wider Midwest region. The Europe-wide Moving Toward Aerospace, or MAE project, has been established to research potential opportunities and identify barriers with the Aerospace Sector. As a partner of the project, Clare County Council last week hosted delegates from the Czech Republic, Norway, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Ukraine and Romania who were shown the work of various companies in Clare which operate within the sector. The MAE project is geared towards opening up potential opportunities in future-oriented manufacturing for small and medium businesses which are currently within more traditional industries. John Drysdale of the Shannon Group, who's a partner in the project, says the secret to expanding this region's role in international aviation is continued collaboration. Another aspect of the MAE project is exploring policy interventions which may be required to support a transition to a new generation of SMEs in aerospace, develop local aerospace value chains and lay the foundations for future SME growth. Head of Enterprise with the Local Enterprise Office in Clare, Padraic McElwee, says while Shannon won't become a key player in the sector tomorrow, work is being carried out to expand its foothold.

Over the last 5 years, I've interviewed hundreds of founders to uncover the founder's formula for success. I've taken the learnings from all my interviews and shaped a framework for success across six key areas. Brain, Body, Business, Family/Friends, Finances and Fun. This podcast is about creating experiments for ourselves so that we can devise our ultimate founder formula. Today's podcast introduces you to The Founder Formula concept and our plan for season 20 of the podcast. --- Thanks to my season partners Local Enterprise Office: https://rebrand.ly/EELEO Azure Communications: https://rebrand.ly/eeazure Property Bridges: https://rebrand.ly/eepropbridge *Use code Fox20 to get 20% discount with Azure.
Earlier this year I attended the National Enterprise Awards in the Mansion House. This was the 24th year of the Local Enterprise Office initiative, which was won last year by Advanced Cosmetics. The Finalists competed for a prize fund of €50,000 and along with an overall National Enterprise of the Year winner there are categories for Best Start-Up, Best Export Business, an Innovation Award, a One-to-Watch Award, and a Sustainability Award. There is also an Outstanding Achievement award for a business that started with their Local Enterprise Office and has gone on to achieve international growth with the assistance of Enterprise Ireland. I caught up with Matt Conlon the Co-Founder and CEO of one of the winners Cytidel. Matt talks about his background, what Cytidel does, AI, winning at the Local Enterprise Awards and more. More about Cytidel: Innovation Award winners, Cytidel, is a vulnerability intelligence platform that enables organisations to adopt an intelligence led approach to risk prioritisation that's up to 95% more efficient than traditional methods. With a focus on actionable vulnerability intelligence, Cytidel is already trusted by leading global financial service providers to save analysts 10+ hours a week.
