Goodyear resident Carlos Villaverde shares stories from his Ajo childhood, to his Vietnam draft and service, to his return to Arizona and a career at Luke Air Force Base.
1st Lieutenant Frank Luke Jr. served in the Army in World War I as a pilot. He quickly gained a reputation as being arrogant and overconfident, but he had the skills to back it up. He scored 18 aerial victories in under three weeks, mostly on unsanctioned missions. His friendship to his group commander allowed him to fly as he pleased, consequence free. On September 29th, 1918, after almost being grounded by his squad commander, Luke left on another solo flight, destroying three German observation balloons. What happened after became subject exaggeration and speculation for decades to come. Originally, it was thought that Luke fought 10 German planes, destroying two of them before being shot down himself, and then died in a gunfight on the ground with German soldiers. For this he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Decades later in 2008, thanks to archeological digs, interviews with descendants of witnesses, reviewing unpublished material, and analyzing evidence, the truth was finally revealed. After destroying three German observation balloons, Luke had circled back to head home, but was down by a German machine gun. He crash landed and attempted to escape on foot, but succumbed to his injuries. Luke was reburied at the Meuse-Argonne Cemetery. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Italian War Cross, in addition to being the first airman ever awarded the Medal of Honor. He's been commemorated with a statue that stands at the Arizona State Capitol, and by Luke Air Force Base, which was named after him. To this day, Luke's Medal of Honor citation has never been updated to reflect the full picture.

We have a story of life change through the Gospel to share with you today. Greg Huggins joined us in the studio to share how the Lord brought him to Himself. Greg has been at Desert Springs for many years, leading many Sunday morning classes and Bible studies and now serving as an elder. Though Greg did not come to know the Lord until he was in his early 30s, he feels that God's hand was working in his life even before that. Greg moved to Arizona when he joined the Air Force after high school. He was serving at Luke Air Force Base and began to somewhat settle in Arizona after getting married. Greg struggled in his commitment to his marriage and attempted to live a bachelor lifestyle while also being a husband and father. During those years he would play basketball at a church in Phoenix that opened up their gyms on Saturday mornings. They would do short devotionals in between pickup games and though Greg didn't resonate with the messages then that ministry would meet him many years later after he came to Christ. But before that Greg reached a point where, in his words, he wanted to be free of his marriage and he decided to divorce his wife. He felt stuck in a cycle of sin. Shortly after that process wrapped up Greg was driving on a Tuesday afternoon and while sitting at 51st Ave + McDowell he felt the tangible presence of the Lord come upon him. Though it wasn't audible, he felt the Lord clearly speaking to him saying, "Come to Me." It was a powerful moment that changed his life forever. Greg walks us through what the Lord did in his life after that moment, how God radically changed his heart and life, how being discipled strengthened his walk as a new believer, his desire to serve and how passionate he is about discipleship and the fellowship in Christ. For information on Men's Discipleship email Shawn Jones at shawn@dscchurch.comFor information on Women's Discipleship email Tracy Walker at twalker@dscchurch.comWould you please subscribe and leave us a review? This will help our podcast reach more people! We'd love it if you'd share this podcast with your friends on social media and beyond. Join us next Wednesday to hear another story of God's faithfulness!

These prosecutors are letting out people who have been arrested 21 times. Crimnals are on a revolving door, allowed back on the street, come back again, over and over. He is a Major in the US Air Force JAG Corps. We are thinking Rodney is NOT being backed by George Soros. Rodney goes into a little bit of his background. Former US Senate candidate and political activist "Demand" Daniel McCarthy returns to bring us up to speed. He's on the ground at the Capital and things don't look good. Notes from the show and Homework: Why did Donald Trump usher in more gun control than Obama? Why did Donald Trump warp speed us to the mandatory jab?Why did Donald Trump abandon his supporters during the January 6th event? Why is Wendy Rogers blocking the only REAL election integrity bill in Arizona? Why is the speaker Rusty Bowers trying to kill the bill? Why did we do the highly publicized election audit only to do nothing to fix the elections? Why are Republicans refusing to protect Americans' right to shop, travel, work, and more without getting the jab? Have you ever looked at someone's military transition success and thought to yourself, they are so lucky? After retiring from the USAF as a Chief Master Sergeant, Rich Pelletier seemingly had an easy transition. In his own words, from the outside it looks like he rode a unicorn over a rainbow and landed in a pot of gold in a field of four leaf clovers. In reality, he really put in the work behind the scenes and truly MADE his own luck.Rich landed at Amazon as an Operations Manager, and he shares candidly about his experience there and the company culture. If Amazon is a company you are considering, tune in to hear his thoughts. Rich and I taught a Lessons Learned for military transition at Luke Air Force Base back in 2021 where we shared our top 3 lessons for success in the military transition process. Here are Rich's top 3 lessons:- Don't allow your previous rank or role determine where you go next. Rich was in the armament career field in the USAF, but he focused on the relevant leadership, communication and employee development skills to land his role at Amazon. In fact, he was offered a position higher than the one he interviewed for originally.- He started off by communicating with his family to ensure everyone was on board with the actual retirement from the military the location where they wanted to live. Rich shares how he evaluated the 4 job offers he received during his interview process, which you will find very useful.- Rich was intentional about building a network on LinkedIn and started networking strategically with people in the industry and organizations where he wanted to work. He also gained support strategically where he didn't have expertise, such as resume writing. Here are my top 3 lessons:- Find your focus! This one won't be much of a surprise to anyone who has listened to me talk about the transition process. Listen in to why this is what I consider the MOST important first step in your military transition. - Don't be afraid to self-market. You are the only one that knows your value and you have to be willing to take ownership and take credit of what role YOU played in your accomplishments in the military. - Network with purpose. We discuss who to connect with, where to network and how to approach your networking efforts in a strategic manner. Rich's example of how to post your career focus on LinkedIn to gain focused networking connections is PURE GOLD! When not at the helm of TBC, Dieter enjoys traveling the world and hopes to check these off his bucket list: Antarctica, Petra, Seychelles, hiking Kilimanjaro, going on safari in Kenya, and skiing on every continent. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Dieter Gable discuss:Successful IT LeadersGiving IT people a seat at the tableProtecting your company and yourself from cyber security attacksMore reasons why IT need to learn to speak business Key Takeaways:People in IT need to learn to speak the language of business, or else they're going to cap their career and even their company's growth if they're in a leadership position. The more we drive specialization, the smaller the pool of leaders becomes. We have to grow leaders overtly. Don't make people feel stupid, don't hide behind jargon. Provide something valuable in meetings. Practice digital hygiene and educate people on the best practices to keep their part in the company secure. Teach people to be extra careful, especially today in the pandemic where many opportunistic criminals are showing up. We need to ask IT what the business needs or what it will look like for the company to succeed. "If you don't have IT as a strategic capability or don't view it that way, you're probably gonna end up in that 80th percentile of companies that will die, and you'll never know why." — Dieter Gable. On episode 231 of SOMEWHERE IN THE SKIES, we are welcomed by former USAF fighter pilot, Lieutenant Colonel Chris Lehto. With over eighteen years of flying, he worked as the Commander of the US Detachment at the Tactical Leadership Programme in Albacete, Spain. As Chief of Flying Branch, he oversaw the execution of three flying courses with no safety incidents. Previous to his final assignment, as Training Systems Assistant Director of Operations for the 56th Training Squadron at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, he directed the development, procurement, and sustainment of F-16 simulator training. He overseas program officers for two simulator contracts and represents Luke as F-16 training systems subject matter expert. After Lehto saw the Navy UFO videos, it definitely caught his attention. Especially when he noticed that several of them had been debunked. So he decided to debunk the debunkers and use his eighteen years of flying to give us an inside glimpse of what the pilots may have experienced during these dramatic events. Today, he walks us through some of the more interesting aspects of the Navy UFO videos, his first real-world combat flight, and so much more as we continue our conversation of UFOs in 2021 and beyond.Subscribe to his YouTube Channel at: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChrisLehtoF16VOTE for Somewhere in the Skies in the 2021 Paranormal Podcast Awards! https://bit.ly/3j4ijTgPatreon: www.patreon.com/somewhereskiesWebsite: www.somewhereintheskies.comYouTube Channel: CLICK HEREOfficial Store: CLICK HERESomewhere in the Skies Coffee! https://bit.ly/3mIAq2oOrder Ryan's book in paperback, ebook, or audiobook by CLICKING HERETwitter: @SomewhereSkiesInstagram: @SomewhereSkiesPodSomewhere in the Skies Subreddit: www.reddit.com/r/SomewhereSkiesPod/Watch Mysteries Decoded for free at www.CWseed.comEpisode edited by Jane Palomera MooreOpening Theme Song, "Ephemeral Reign" by Per KiilstofteSOMEWHERE IN THE SKIES is part of the eOne podcast network. In this episode: We meet CAPT Frank Lee Culbertson, Jr., USN (Ret.), a former American Naval officer and aviator, test pilot, aerospace engineer, NASA astronaut, and graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He served as the Commander of the International Space Station (ISS) for almost four months in 2001, giving him the distinction of being the only U.S. citizen not on Earth when the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks occurred. As the ISS passed over New York City after the attacks, he captured impactful photos and video from low Earth orbit of the smoke emanating from Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan. You can read a letter he wrote detailing the complex emotions he experienced that day at https://www.nasa.gov/topics/nasalife/features/sept11_culbertson.html Culbertson's achievements are too numerous to list completely here. He served in the Gulf of Tonkin, Vietnam, and later as a Naval aviator, Culbertson flew aircraft with the U.S. Air Force in the 426th Tactical Fighter Training Squadron at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, where he served as Weapons and Tactics Instructor. Culbertson then served as the Catapult and Arresting Gear Officer for USS John F. Kennedy until he was selected to attend the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, from which he graduated with distinction in 1982. He has logged over 9,500 hours flying time in 60 different types of aircraft. Frank was selected for and completed NASA astronaut training in 1985. He's a veteran of three space flights: STS-38 aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis (Nov. 1990), STS-51 aboard Space Shuttle Discovery (Sept. 1993), and as part of the ISS Expedition 3 crew (launched via STS-105 on Space Shuttle Discovery, Aug. 2001). Culbertson lived and worked aboard the International Space Station for a total of 129 days on that mission and commanded the ISS for 117 of those days. Culbertson recently retired as President of the Space Systems Group at Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems, and currently consults for several aerospace companies. He's also on the Board of Advisors of Bye Aerospace, the Board of Trustees of the AIAA, the Board of Directors of Firefly Black Aerospace, and is Member at Large on the Space Foundation Board of Directors. He remains an active pilot and is president of his own company, Higher Flight LLC. In this episode, Frank recalls his day on the ISS on Sept. 11, 2001, how he received information about the attacks in bits and pieces as the day unfolded, the loss of his friend Capt. Charles “Chic” Burlingame (pilot of Flight 77 which terrorists crashed into the Pentagon that day), and how much the world had changed by the time he returned to Earth three months later. Detailing his memories of taking photos aboard the ISS that morning, Culbertson says, “So, it made it easy to zoom in with the camera and look at what was happening. And as I zoomed in ... a big gray blob enveloped Southern Manhattan, and ... I found out later what I was seeing was the second tower come down.” Introductory and closing music: Paint the Sky by Hans Atom © Copyright 2015, licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/hansatom/50718 Ft: Miss Judged

In celebration of Black History Month, Trinity Cathedral invites you to the Black History Month Guest Preachers at 12:10 p.m. each Wednesday of February in the Cathedral.Wednesday, February 6The. Rev. Canon Veronica Ritson (retired archdeacon of the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona):celebrating Anna Julia CooperAs the daughter of an airman in the US Air Force, Veronica came to Arizona via Luke Air Force Base over forty-five years ago, and stayed. Being ordained to the Diaconate in 1993 would overlap an Arizona State employee profession of project management in computer programming, and part-time teaching for the Maricopa Community College system for the Computer Science curriculum. For Veronica, the Diaconate role would begin by encompassing the world of HIV/AIDS in its cultural height during the 1990’s. She sat on the board of “AIDS Project Arizona”, and was chairperson for the “AZ Diocese AIDS Task Force.” At the beginning of the “2000” decades, Veronica’s role shifted to “Liturgy Coordinator” for Trinity Cathedral, director for the Diocesan “Deacon Formation Academy” (DFA), and in 2004 was appointed Archdeacon by Bishop Smith. Having stepped down from an active deacon’s role in 2015, Veronica remains a faculty member and advisor for DFA.Whether being an advocate for persons living with AIDS or helping to form deacons, Veronica’s message is the same: “we should embody the love that is about justice, peace, and the dignity of every human being”.
Voters in Arizona have a critical choice before them this November when they consider who to send to the United States Senate. On the one hand, there’s liberal Kyrsten Sinema. For this campaign, she’s pretended to be a moderate who will consider all points of view. But her record belies the facts. She once proclaimed herself a “Prada Socialist” who supported higher taxes, government-run health care, and lobbied to shut down Luke Air Force Base near Phoenix. And then there’s Martha McSally. She was the first American woman to fly in combat and has served our country with honor and distinction. She’s been a tireless advocate for Arizona families in Congress, supporting tax cuts, more affordable health care, and a balanced budget. In Arizona and across the country, voters face important choices that will profoundly impact our future success. On November 6, don’t forget to make your voice heard.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Are you leaving the “humanness” out of the workplace? In an HBR article, 20 years ago, it stated, "One reason for the scarcity of managerial greatness is that in educating and training managers, we focus too much on technical proficiency and too little on character. But the only people who become great managers are the ones who understand in their guts that managing is not merely a series of mechanical tasks but a set of human interactions." In this episode learn why cultivating relationships at work good for business, how to lead with humanity and put people first before profits, why most people focus on mechanical tasks instead of human interactions and a tip on how to gain strategic advantages by being more authentic with your human interactions. Nicole Lance is the CEO of Lance Strategies, providing individual coaching and high-value solutions for private businesses, non-profits, and local governments looking to build team-oriented cultures and identify and refine strategies for success.
Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career
Richard McSpadden was first introduced to flying when his mother presented his father with an introductory flight lesson. His father became a pilot and that started a generational love of aviation that passed to Richard and now to his children. His father purchased a Navion, and Richard earned his pilot ratings in the plane. Richard joined the Air Force after college, and found that the Navion time really gave him an edge in Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT). His performance in UPT was instrumental in his getting the only F-15 assignment available to his graduating class. After attending F-15 training at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, he was assigned to Kadena Air Base, Okinawa. He followed that assignment with an F-15A assignment at Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico. When it was time for a staff assignment, Richard became the Air Attache in the Republic of the Philippines, and flew the C-12 King Air aircraft as part of his duties. Seeing an Air Force announcement that the Thunderbirds were recruiting demonstration pilots, Richard applied, completing an extensive flying history and personal resume. He was selected for an evaluation flight, and took it in an F-16, which he had never flown before, and became the new Commander for the Thunderbirds. After his two-year tour with the Thunderbirds, Richard retired from the Air Force and pursued a career at Hewlett Packard. In 2017, Richard became the Executive Director of the AOPA Air Safety Institute.
On this episode of Expanded Perspectives the guys start the show off talking about how Brazil's elusive tree boa, Corallus cropanii — also known as Cropan's boa — is one of the world's rarest boas, infrequently sighted and known from only a handful of dead specimens collected after the snake was first seen and described in 1953. However, the species is alive and well, scientists recently discovered. One of the slippery serpents was captured in January — the second living specimen ever seen, and the first glimpsed in 64 years. Then, humans have had music on the brain for most of our existence—cultures all over the world create, listen to, and experience pleasure from music. To study this phenomenon, researchers have surveyed people’s feelings, scanned the brains of performers and listeners, and even measured hormone production. Their findings thus far suggest that our enjoyment comes from the same two-phase reward process—a dopamine-driven anticipatory phase, followed by a dopamine- and opioid-influenced consummatory phase—that kicks into gear when you eat a tasty treat or experience a rush after an intense workout. Then, according to a number of reports, a photograph reputedly of a reptilian alien taken outside of Luke Air Force Base was posted to 4chan on Thursday. Within minutes, the entire website was allegedly taken offline and all copies of the photograph mysteriously disappeared, except for one. 4chan is the highly controversial image board site associated with a wide variety of equally controversial and nefarious groups and famous for its pranks. According to various accounts, an anonymous thread titled “24489 Taken Aprox 24 miles north west of Luke Airforce Base Phoenix Az. Lab H4C” was begun between on 4chan’s /pol/ board between 12am and 2am on February 23rd. It included a picture of an alien which was said to have yellow scales, black eyes and small pursed lips and was looking directly at the camera in a classic selfie pose. Reports say the thread was only up for a few minutes before the 4chan channel went offline. When it returned, all traces of the photo and thread were gone. Then, a Pennsylvania construction worker says he photographed an unknown creature he believes “had the exact marks” of the Jersey Devil. 32-year-old R.W. claimed that on Friday he was driving on the highway about an hour outside of Philadelphia when he and his friend spotted the creature. After the break the guys chat with researcher, author and rocker Lyle Blackburn about his latest book "Beyond Boggy Creek". Lyle Blackburn is an author, musician, and cryptid researcher from Texas. His investigative cryptozoology books, such as The Beast of Boggy Creek and Lizard Man, reflect his life-long fascination with legends and sighting reports of real-life 'monsters.' During his research, Lyle has often explored the remote reaches of the southern U.S. in search of shadowy creatures said to inhabit the dense backwoods and swamplands of these areas. Lyle is also a staff writer for the monthly horror magazine, Rue Morgue, and founder of the rock band Ghoultown. Lyle has been heard on numerous radio programs including Coast To Coast AM, has appeared on various television shows airing on Discovery, Animal Planet, Destination America, A&E, HGTV, and CBS, and served as consulting producer and special episode host for the tv show Monsters and Mysteries in America. Most recently, Lyle was featured in the documentary film, Boggy Creek Monster.
