Stewardship Through Proxy Voting with Jerry Bowyer

“Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds, for riches do not last forever…” - Proverbs 27:23-24These days, our “flocks and herds” often look like stocks and mutual funds, not sheep and cattle. But the call to wise stewardship remains. One way we do that is through proxy voting. Jerry Bowyer joins us to explain how and why it matters.  Jerry Bowyer is the President of Bowyer Research and our Resident Economist here at Faith & Finance. He is the author of The Maker Versus the Takers: What Jesus Really Said About Social Justice and Economics. What Is Proxy Voting?Proxy voting is similar to civic voting. As a citizen, you vote in elections, attend town halls, and even influence legislation. As a shareholder in a company, if you own the stock directly, you have similar rights: to vote on proposals, ask questions, and even submit resolutions. But if you're invested through mutual funds or ETFs, you hand that vote over to someone else—often a fund manager or institution. And unless you know how they're voting, your values may not be represented at all. Many Christian ministries, nonprofits, and even pro-life organizations are unknowingly voting against their own missions. Why? Because they either don't engage in proxy voting or delegate it without vetting the recipient's values. How Can Investors Reclaim Their Voice?Proxy statements are often long, complex, and written in confusing legal language. For that reason, many advisors default to saying, “Just let the client decide,” rather than helping them engage meaningfully.Of course, that's not a good sign because if it's too complex for the advisor, it's definitely too complex for the client. Instead, we encourage advisors and Christian investors to partner with specialists, like Bowyer Research, who can help decode the process and ensure votes reflect biblical values. They offer audits to show investors how they've been voting—often to their shock. They've never done one where people weren't stunned by what they saw.Mutual Funds, ETFs, and the Challenge of Indirect OwnershipIf you're invested through mutual funds or ETFs, you're likely not voting directly. However, that doesn't mean you're powerless. Here are some things to keep in mind:You can request data on how your funds are voting. Bowyer Research tracks that. You can explore “direct indexing” solutions—an increasingly available strategy that allows you to own shares directly and reclaim your voting rights. You can ask your advisor questions. “How am I voting?” is a simple but powerful question. If your advisor can't answer it, that's a red flag. What You Can Do TodayAsk your advisor how your shares are being voted. If they don't know, press in.Get an audit of your proxy voting records through BowyerResearch.com.Talk to companies, not just about them. Change happens through engagement, not complaint. If you're an investor, advisor, or leader at a Christian ministry or nonprofit, don't let your investments work against your mission. Visit BowyerResearch.com to learn how to align your proxy voting with your values. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm 27 and own 20 acres of land. Should I use the land as collateral for a house loan, or use my saved money to get a bigger loan and increase my land's equity?I opened a Roth IRA with National Life Group in 2013. It's past the surrender fee date, but it's not earning me much. I'll be 66 in July, and I'm single with no one to depend on. I also have another annuity with F and G that I'm not happy with. The Meaning Behind A Christmas Carol with Jerry Bowyer

Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol is a timeless tale cherished for its powerful story of transformation. Yet beneath its heartwarming narrative lies a deeper commentary on economics, generosity, and faith—one that challenges the worldview of scarcity and embraces God's abundance.Today, Jerry Bowyer will dive into the philosophical and theological themes within the story and help us discover what we can learn from Ebenezer Scrooge's journey.Jerry Bowyer is the President of Bowyer Research and our Resident Economist here at Faith & Finance. He is the author of “The Maker Versus the Takers: What Jesus Really Said About Social Justice and Economics.”The "Surplus Population" MindsetOne of the most striking moments in A Christmas Carol is Scrooge's cold remark about the “surplus population.” This phrase reflects an ideology rooted in the teachings of Reverend Thomas Malthus, an 18th-century economist who believed that population growth would outpace resources, leading to widespread poverty. Malthus advocated for limiting population growth, particularly among the poor.Scrooge's initial worldview mirrors this philosophy: a belief that resources are scarce, people are a burden, and the poor are expendable. This mindset not only disregards the inherent dignity of every person but also misrepresents the nature of God as generous and abundant.A Christmas Carol: A Response to MalthusianismDickens wrote A Christmas Carol as a critique of Malthusian ideas. Through Scrooge's transformation, the story reveals the flaws in a worldview of scarcity. Scrooge begins the story isolated, stingy, and bitter—seeing others as competitors for limited resources. By the end, he embraces generosity, community, and joy, reflecting the biblical truth that humans are created in God's image to love, create, and give. The Ghost of Christmas Present drives this point home by challenging Scrooge's cold logic. In one scene, he rebukes Scrooge, asking, “Are you the surplus population?” This moment underscores that no one is surplus in God's economy. Every person is valuable, created for a purpose, and capable of contributing to human flourishing. The transformation of Scrooge's mindset from scarcity to abundance aligns with a biblical view of God's provision. In Genesis 1:28, God commands humanity to “be fruitful and multiply” and to “fill the earth and subdue it.” Far from being burdens, people are creators and contributors, reflecting God's creative nature.History supports this biblical principle. During Dickens' time, industrial and economic advancements were lifting many out of poverty. Contrary to Malthus' predictions, human ingenuity and collaboration were unlocking unprecedented prosperity. Dickens weaves this reality into A Christmas Carol, showing how generosity and a thriving community lead to abundance.Lessons from Scrooge's RedemptionScrooge's transformation offers timeless lessons:Embrace Generosity: The turning point in Scrooge's story is his decision to give freely to others. Generosity reflects God's character and opens the door to joy and community.Value Every Life: Tiny Tim, a child who might be dismissed as “surplus” in Scrooge's old mindset, symbolizes hope and purpose. Dickens reminds us that every life is precious in God's eyes.Challenge Scarcity Thinking: Scarcity thinking breeds fear, isolation, and selfishness. By contrast, faith in God's abundance allows us to live with open hands and hearts.Redeem the Past: Scrooge's journey with the Ghost of Christmas Past shows how trauma and hardship can shape our worldview. Yet, we can move beyond our past to live in freedom and generosity through grace, healing, and community. The themes of A Christmas Carol remain relevant in our world. Modern ideologies that devalue life, promote fear of overpopulation or prioritize self-interest mirror the Malthusian philosophy Dickens opposed. As believers, we are called to affirm every person's inherent worth and reflect God's abundant generosity in how we live and give.Just as Scrooge learns, we are not “bugs” competing for limited resources. We are image-bearers of a loving Creator who calls us to steward the earth, care for one another, and trust His provision. As we watch A Christmas Carol or reflect on its message this Christmas season, let's remember the gospel truth at its heart: God is generous, not stingy. He gave us His Son, Jesus, the ultimate gift of love and redemption. In the words of Tiny Tim, “God bless us, everyone!” May we live out that blessing by embracing generosity, valuing life, and trusting in the abundance of God's provision. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:My 84-year-old mother wants to gift each of us four kids a $100,000 CD. “And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.” - Luke 2:8-14That's from the Christmas Story in Luke, Chapter 2. The angels announce the coming of the Savior to a group of shepherds. It sounds simple enough…but there's more to the story. Jerry Bowyer joins us to talk about it.Jerry Bowyer is the President of Bowyer Research and our Resident Economist here at Faith & Finance. He is the author of “The Maker Versus the Takers: What Jesus Really Said About Social Justice and Economics.” You can also read his insightful columns for World News Group. Why Shepherds? When the angels announced Jesus' birth, their audience wasn't kings or scholars but shepherds. Often portrayed as social outcasts historically, shepherds were viewed negatively because their flocks could wander onto others' property, leading to accusations of theft. Despite this reputation, shepherds played a crucial role in the temple system, raising sheep for sacrifices.Bethlehem, where Jesus was born, was a hub for breeding sacrificial lambs. Archaeological evidence supports this, highlighting structures like the Migdal Eder (Tower of the Flock), where unblemished lambs were identified for temple sacrifices. This foreshadows Jesus' role as the ultimate Lamb of God, born in the city that prepared lambs for sacrifice.Mary's Economic PhilosophyMary's Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55) reveals her economic worldview. In this poetic expression of praise, she celebrates God's justice: the rich are sent away empty, and the poor are filled. These are the socio-economic dynamics at play when Mary visits Elizabeth in Judea, a wealthier and more hierarchical society compared to Galilee. Elizabeth's high status contrasts with Mary's humility, yet Elizabeth honors Mary, signaling a reversal of societal norms.Interestingly, Mary's upbringing near Sephoris, the financial capital of Galilee, likely exposed her to sophisticated cultural and economic ideas. This blend of humility and intellect influenced her son, Jesus, whose teachings often echoed themes from her Magnificat.Herod's Fear and the Temple SystemThe birth of Jesus didn't just bring joy; it also struck fear into the hearts of the ruling class, especially King Herod. He and the temple elites understood the revolutionary implications of Jesus' arrival. The Messiah's mission to bring justice threatened their corrupt economic system, which exploited the poor through practices like unfair money-changing in the temple.Herod's fear highlights the broader conflict between two kingdoms: one driven by greed and oppression and the other by justice and generosity. This tension culminates in Jesus' cleansing of the temple, an act that symbolized the dismantling of a corrupt economic system. The Magi and the Two TemplesThe gifts of the Magi—gold, frankincense, and myrrh—mirror offerings described in the Torah for the temple. The gospels contrast two “temples”: the physical temple, corrupted by greed, and Jesus himself, the true temple who provides for the needy. This theme of “the Maker versus the Takers” runs throughout the gospels, illustrating the stark difference between God's economy and human systems of exploitation.Economics in God's PlanThe Nativity story profoundly reminds us that God's master plan includes economics. From shepherds to Mary's Magnificat and from Herod's fear to the Magi's gifts, every detail points to God's concern for justice, generosity, and the redemption of all aspects of life—including money. This Christmas, as you reflect on the birth of Christ, consider how God's kingdom calls us to live with integrity, humility, and a heart for justice in every area of life.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:My husband plans to wait until full retirement age to take Social Security. I will take spousal benefits, but I'll only be 65 when he retires. Can I take spousal benefits, then? Or will I have to wait until my full retirement age?I'm 35 and returning to work part-time at my kids' school. Should I invest in their deferred comp option with about $800 per month, or is there something else you'd recommend? We have a HELOC that matures a couple of years after our mortgage is paid off. The bank said it's best to keep the HELOC open to safeguard against potential fraud. Should I follow their advice and keep the HELOC open, or is this just the bank trying to get us to spend more money?Resources Mentioned:The Maker Versus the Takers: What Jesus Really Said About Social Justice and Economics by Jerry BowyerLook At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep.” - Genesis 1:1-2I'm sure you're more than familiar with those first lines of the Bible…but are you aware of the economic implications of the creation story? Jerry Bowyer fills us in today.Jerry Bowyer is the President of Bowyer Research and our Resident Economist here at Faith & Finance. He is the author of “The Maker Versus the Takers: What Jesus Really Said About Social Justice and Economics.” You can also read his insightful columns for World News Group. Understanding the BeginningIn the opening verses of Genesis, we learn that the earth was formless, void, and dark. This detail is crucial for two reasons: it sets the stage for the rest of Genesis 1 and highlights God's creative process. When we understand that the earth was initially disorganized, empty, and dark, we can appreciate God's work in bringing order and fullness.God's Creative ProcessFor the first few days of creation, God deals with the earth's formlessness by separating elements: light from darkness, waters above from waters below, and dry land from the sea. This separation creates structure. Then, God begins to fill what He has organized. He populates the sky with the sun, moon, stars, the seas with fish, and the land with plants and animals. Ultimately, He fills the earth with humanity. The first thing God does is turn on the light, akin to how we start our workday by turning on the light in our office. God's act of turning on the light symbolizes bringing clarity and purpose to the day ahead. The Significance of “It Was So”Genesis often states, "Let us do such and such, and it was so." This phrase can be confusing as it seems out of order. However, it signifies that God's actions were deliberate and agreed upon, possibly within the Trinity or with the angels. This consensus highlights the collaborative nature of God's work, which we can emulate in our own lives by seeking agreement and unity in our endeavors.Evaluating Our WorkGenesis 1:18 says, “God saw that it was good.” This implies that after creating, God stopped to evaluate His work. Similarly, we should regularly review and assess our efforts to ensure they meet our standards and God's approval. This practice underscores the inherent goodness of the material world and our role in stewarding it responsibly.Humanity's Unique RoleAfter creating humanity, God saw that it was "very good." Humans are unique because we are made in God's image, capable of forming, filling, and evaluating our work. This divine likeness sets us apart from the rest of creation, emphasizing our unique role in God's plan. Our Relationship with CreationHumanity's relationship with the garden and the earth is distinct. The garden was a cultivated space where Adam and Eve learned from God. However, the rest of the earth was wild and needed to be subdued and developed. This mandate to cultivate and improve the earth remains fundamental to our purpose.Any economic philosophy that discourages development contradicts this biblical mandate. While we must avoid pollution and destruction, we are called to transform and utilize the earth's resources to promote human flourishing.Applying Creation Principles to EconomicsIn our daily work, turning raw materials into useful products—like sand into microprocessors or seeds into crops—is not optional but a divine command. This creative mandate is essential for economic growth and human flourishing. Neglecting it leads to stagnation and conflict.Understanding the creation story from an economist's perspective reveals God's intention for humanity to bring order, fill the earth, and evaluate our work. Our work, done unto the Lord, is part of His grand plan and promotes true human flourishing. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I recently borrowed money on my life insurance. Should I declare that on my income taxes next year?In Florida, many of us have 55-deed-restricted homes. Many fees are involved, and quite a few have gone up. What's the best way for me to use it when I retire so that I don't lose money and it can continue to grow? In Matthew 10:16, Jesus called us to be wise as snakes and gentle as doves. But can we be gentle and wise when standing up for biblical principles and our voting rights as investors? It's the annual shareholder meeting season for public corporations, meaning companies will hear about their policies from investors. Jerry Bowyer joins us today with a biblical perspective on corporate engagement.Jerry Bowyer is the President of Bowyer Research and our Resident Economist here at Faith & Finance. He is the author of “The Maker Versus the Takers: What Jesus Really Said About Social Justice and Economics.” You can also read his insightful columns for World News Group. When you work with corporations and voting shares, are you helping Christians stand up for their “rights” in some way?Christians can advocate for their rights as corporate shareholders by putting shareholder proposals on the ballot if they own $2,000 worth of shares for three years. This enables them to speak at the annual meeting or delegate that to somebody else and present their questions and cases to the CEOs and executives. Through shareholder activism and proxy voting, there is a great deal of ability to "speak to kings" or address corporate leadership. How does proxy voting work and how can it impact a company?Proxy voting works similarly to how voting works for citizens. As shareholders, investors get to vote for members of the board of directors, just like citizens vote for members of Congress or the president. As shareholders, investors can attend the annual meeting and speak up if they own just one or even a fractional share, similar to how citizens can go to town hall meetings to voice their opinions. What are some differences in how one engages a corporation vs. a government agency? When engaging with government funds as investors, they are on the "our side" as the investor. They help governments engage properly when they are company investors, just like individuals invest through 401ks, ETFs, etc. Governments have a fiduciary obligation to invest for retirees' good and vote in a way that benefits them. With corporations, the engagement is more about holding them accountable and encouraging them to focus on their core business rather than politics or social issues. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I just read the book “Home Equity and Reverse Mortgages: The Cinderella of the Baby Boomer Retirement” by Harlan Accola and have decided to move forward to do that, too. I contacted my bank, and they don't offer that service. Do you have any suggestions? In Virginia, specifically Richmond, are there banks that do this?My house loan is only in my husband's name, and I would like to know if I should put my name on it or leave it as is.I will be 65 in June and don't want to work until I fully retire. My job is gratifying but very stressful. I have no credit card bills or anything additional to the mortgage or car payment. My car payment is about $400 monthly, and I still owe about $18,000. Would it be in my best interest to take my additional monthly commission checks, typically put in savings, and put that toward paying the car off?Resources Mentioned:Home Equity and Reverse Mortgages: The Cinderella of the Baby Boomer Retirement by Harlan AccolaMovement MortgageRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. That's from the Christmas Story in Luke, Chapter 2. The angels announce the coming of the Savior to a group of shepherds. It sounds simple enough … but there's more to the story. Jerry Bowyer joins us to talk about it. Our guest, Jerry Bowyer, is the author of The Maker Versus the Takers: What Jesus Really Said About Social Justice and Economics. It's loaded with amazing insights about Jesus' time on earth from an economic perspective.  Angels carried probably the most important message in history … why deliver it to shepherds? Weren't they social outcasts?Shepherds were under social outcasts because they couldn't keep their sheep from going into their neighbors yard and eat the grass - thereby committing theft against your neighbor. The Temple system ran on sheep. They used a lot of sheep for the sacrifices. So there was a country set aside for sheep to be raised. This was near Jerusalem. Jesus, the Lamb of God, was born in the city where lambs for the Temple system were bred.So God's master plan included finance. We know a little more about Mary than we do Joseph at this point. Does she have an economic philosophy?Mary's song, Magnificat, has words concerning economics about the rich being torn down and set away empty, and the poor being filled.Mary visits Elizabeth in Judea, a little higher society. Elizabeth subordinates herself to Mary, this is a reversal of status.Jesus uses parts of the Magnifcat in one of His sermonsMary was exposed to multiple languages, and had some intellectual teaching/learning. How did the birth of Jesus threaten the ruling temple class in Jerusalem?Herod understands that the birth of Jesus will unset everything and bring justice to the world, and as a tyrant, he was disturbed with this idea.Jesus will ruin many people's livelihoods, etc moneychangers in the Temple. In Matthew, Chapter 2, the Magi come to worship the baby Jesus and give him very expensive gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. What was timely about that? The Magi brought Jesus things that would be brought to the Temple. ON TODAY'S PROGRAM, ROB ANSWERS LISTENER QUESTIONS:  Anna bought a 2014 Buick. She is currently not making enough money to keep up with the payments and still owe $20,000 and the car is not worth that. She wants to know the options that would be available.Evelyn just sold their home and need to rent for 6 months before buying another home. How should they invest this money from the home sale in the meantime?  RESOURCES MENTIONED:FaithFi appEdmunds.comKellyBlueBookBankrate.com Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. Politics by its very nature is controversial, perhaps none more so than the administration's move to forgive student loan debt. Student loan forgiveness is popular among the millions of Americans who owe more than $1.7 trillion for their education. But it has its detractors. Our guest, Jerry Bowyer, is among them. We'll talk about it today on Faith and Finance.Jerry Bowyer is our resident economist. He's a columnist with WORLD Opinions and the author of The Maker Versus the Takers: What Jesus Really Said About Social Justice and Economics.Jerry says that with the national student debt load at $1.7 trillion, college education has become a financial bubble. The cost of higher education has continued to spiral upward without an increase in the quality of the education students are receiving. He says debt is what creates financial bubbles, and clearly, debt has been inflating the cost of a college education.Bowyer also says the Biden administration's proposal to forgive and simply write off hundreds of billions of dollars in student debt is not only constitutionally questionable, but it would also further fuel inflation. If the student loan forgiveness plan does survive legal challenges, Bowyer says Christians who don't benefit from the plan should still be thankful that the Lord was able to develop their character through paying back the debt they owed.Bowyer also puts this into context and explains how this relates (or doesn't) to Deuteronomy 15:1, which reads, “At the end of every seven years you must cancel debts.” Is student loan forgiveness biblical? He provides another Scripture reference that he says is a more apt comparison.Next, Rob answers these questions at 800-525-7000 or via email at askrob@FaithFi.com:What should you do with zero-balance credit card accounts that you're not using?Does a divorced person have the ability to draw the former spouse's Social Security benefits?Does it make sense to put a large lump sum of money into a charitable donation annuity?Be sure to check out the rest of FaithFi.com to access our books and our many free helpful resources. Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy for unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. You're no doubt familiar with that passage in Luke 2, given by angels to shepherds in Bethlehem. But there's an interesting backstory. Today, we'll talk with Jerry Bowyer about the economics of the Christmas Story. Economist Jerry Bowyer is a columnist at the Christian Post and WORLD News Group, contributor. He's also the author of The Maker Versus the Takers: What Jesus Really Said About Social Justice and Economics. Some might think that by talking about the economics of the Christmas Story. But with more than 2,000 Scriptures about money and possessions, God clearly sees economics as a spiritually important matter. In The Maker Versus the Takers, Bowyer writes about the The Economic Philosophy of the Virgin Mary. Bowyer discusses that on today's program and provides context for the Christmas Story that reveals entirely new understandings. He discusses Mary's Song of Praise, known as the the Magnificat, and its economic message? Bowyer also explains how the nativity narrative in Luke 2 begins with a description of economic exploitation. How so? He discusses what we can learn about the financial condition of Joseph and Mary, and how the birth of Jesus threatened the ruling temple class in Jerusalem. From Matthew, chapter 2, he talks about the story of the Magi and their unusually expensive gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Read more from Jerry Bowyer at WNG.org and the ChristianPost.com. Despite high inflation, rising interest rates and slow economic growth, the labor market remains seemingly strong. We'll talk about that with Jerry Bowyer today. Economist Jerry Bowyer is President of Bowyer Research and a MoneyWise contributor.. On today's program, Bowyer explains why the economy is still adding jobs and employers are still looking for workers, and why a falling employment rate could be a good thing or a bad thing if it means too many people are leaving the labor market. He discusses the importance of American society providing a safety net but not a hammock. Rob and Jerry also talk about how employment can be a lagging economic indicator and what we might expect in the months ahead. They also discuss long-term trends that will impact the labor force and the economy, including: - Aging of the workforce (500K+ net loss to the workforce each year) - Abortion (60MM babies aborted/40MM would be between 18-50 years old today/20MM prime working age) - Expansive social safety net And they talk about the importance of current trends, including: - COVID reduced labor participation rate - Did not rebound due to, in part, early retirees (55+ taking early retirement) - Nearly all women back to work - Only 50% of men back to work - Cultural stigma of not working if working age seems to be gone - Anti-fertility trends (1-2 kids average vs. 3-4) and the importance of immigration Bowyer also explains why an incredibly strong dollar can actually be concerning. Furthermore, they discuss rising interest rates and the ripple effect they're having through the economy, and what it might take to get inflation under control. They also answer the question: Are we officially in a recession yet? Jerry Bowyer is the author of The Maker Versus the Takers: What Jesus Really Said About Social Justice and Economics. The Backlash Against ESG With Jerry Bowyer

You may not know it, but there's a political and ideological war raging inside your investment portfolio. In recent years, a tiny but very vocal minority has sought to bully financial institutions into adopting their views of culture and politics. But it seems they've gone too far. We'll talk about that with economist Jerry Bowyer today. WHAT IS ESG? ESG is an acronym for Environmental, Social, and Governance investing, ESG, and it's being exploited by the minority you mentioned. The Wall Street Journal recently ran a story about a letter addressed to the money management giant Blackrock by the Attorney General of Arizona and 18 of his counterparts in other states. This comes after a series of actions taken by state-level financial officers questioning Blackrock and other asset managers as well as rating agencies for their heavy-handed imposition of ESG. They were imposing their views of ESG on state investment assets and even on the states themselves. Add to that the world's richest man, and former ESG darling, Elon Musk, calling the whole thing a scam, and pushback from Republican senators, governors, and other hopefuls against the politicization of the world of finance, and it adds up to a powerful reaction to a movement which had been seen as the inevitable future of the industry. BACKLASH AGAINST ESG MOVEMENT Bowyer says the backlash against the ESG movement is important because that sense of inevitability was a key source of ESG's power. The message was fall in line with the inevitable march of history or get left behind. When investors questioned the prudence of imposing political criteria on financial decisions, they were assured that it was, indeed, prudent because this was where the world was going. Eventually, the governments of the world would wake up to the reality of climate change and outlaw fossil fuels, leaving them as stranded assets sitting on company balance sheets. As social consciousness inevitably rose, anti-social behavior would be punished in the form of reputational risk and eventually the loss of the company's social license to do business. So don't take a risk, do the safe thing, and fall into line now. But a populist revolt stubbornly held on, not just to God and guns, but also to fossil fuels, color-blindness, viewpoint diversity, parental rights in education, and the sanctity of life. Facts are stubborn things, but our ruling class now has to learn that stubborn people are also a fact. Those who stubbornly hold fast to things which the anointed can't believe still exist are aware, angry, and registered to vote (and have the IDs to prove it) know it. And dozens of attorneys general, treasurers, senators, and governors know it. This means that the chief selling point, risk management, has suddenly become the chief objection. ESG is now a controversial political risk. How is the ESG crowd reacting to this backlash? The controversy is now so undeniable, Bowyer says, that the ESG industry is lashing back at the backlash, the denial of which is essential to the premise of that industry. As You Sow, one of the non-profit clearinghouses for the industry, posted a quote on social media acknowledging that the acronym ESG as a construct may have lost some of its luster and has been explaining to the shrinking faithful that the reason why there's been such a backlash against ESG is that it It's extremely effective! So, the new party line is basically, We're losing so much because we win so much. The unspun version is that ideology pushed the movement beyond the investing public's tolerance point and the shareholders and the voters are correcting the imbalance. Things have gotten so bad that they haven't just alienated the populist right, they've alienated some pretty close former allies, for example Tesla Inc. The green giant of industry had been an ESG colossus until Elon Musk failed to keep pace with the inevitable march of history and came out of the closet as a free speech absolutist and Twitter-prisoner public defender. At the recent Tesla Annual meeting, the shareholder base of an electric car and solar panel company jeered as activists presented ideologically charged public statements, cheered when the moderator stepped in to cut the speeches short and then went on to vote down the slate of ideological ballot proposals. Did I mention that this was Tesla? If they've lost Tesla, they've lost. THE WAR ISN'T OVER But the war isn't over. Even if the whole ESG movement goes down in flames, the people behind it are always looking for something and they never give up. Let me explain it like this: Humanistic philosophy can deny, but not ignore, the reality of human sin. This means the people who espouse it need it to find other ways to purge their own feelings of guilt. Social justice investing stepped in as their form of atonement for the sin of being a capitalist. But the thing is, and it's critical to understand this: Whatever form of atonement they come up with in the future will never be complete because the demands for purity keep escalating. Americans should revolt against this new form of authoritarianism, but only a Christian worldview can truly replace it. With a national debt now north of $30 trillion, is there a debt crisis on the horizon? And what does it mean for you? We'll talk about that with Jerry Bowyer today. The consequences arising from the continual accumulation of public debts in other countries ought to admonish us to prevent their growth in our own. John Adams Jerry Bowyer is our resident economist here at MoneyWise. Jerry notes that he's been hearing dire warnings about a looming economic crisis since the 1980s. But he says circumstances are shifting, and it's time to take seriously the risk of a true debt crisis in the United States. Some will recall a growing national debt in the 1980s, but at the time, the United States had a debt-to-GDP (gross domestic product) ratio of 30-50%. But now, he notes that the debt-to-GDP ratio is roughly 130%. And that makes all the difference. Bowyer says Debt doesn't matter at all right up until the moment when it's the only thing that matters. And he adds that we're closer to that moment than at any point in his lifetime. (Proverbs 22:7 says, The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is slave of the lender. Bowyer explains how Proverbs 22:7 applies to governments, including that of the United States. He also details how the Federal Reserve's monetary policies contributed to the problem. Rob West and Jerry Bowyer also explain how this impacts you and your family, and what you can do to help protect yourself financially. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place For nation will rise against nation Matthew 24: 6 and 7. We've once again seen the truth of Jesus' words with the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The economic impact ripples through Europe and the U.S. Jerry Bowyer has the details today on MoneyWise. MoneyWise contributor Jerry Bowyer is our resident economist, the financial editor atTownhall.com. Bowyer points out that while we talk about high gas prices as aresultof Russia's invasion of Ukraine, there is something else that we should consider. Russia relies very heavily on revenue from energy sales. Russia is a petro-state, so when the oil revenues are high, Vladimir Putin is bold, when they are low, he's docile. This holds true over the past two decades. Putin's previous military aggressions have come at times when oil prices were high and he could afford to fund a military effort. While oil prices have risen higher since the invasion of Ukraine, prices were already elevated before Putin decided to invade. Bowyer contends that inflationary policies drive up energy prices, and environmental policies designed to make oil more scarce also drives up the cost of oil, putting Russia and Putin in a position of strength. Inflation continues to contribute to the high prices of gas and virtually everything else we buy. Bowyer says the answer is to return to the biblical principle of weights and measures. Secure the dollar to something like the gold measure where our currency is anchored to something objective. Otherwise, the political class will also print more so they can spend more, so they can have more authority and power. Jerry Bowyer is the financial editor at TownHall.com and author of The Maker Versus the Takers: What Jesus Really Said About Social Justice and Economics. Who doesn't love a good conspiracy theory? Either to laugh about it or take it seriously. Today,Jerry Bowyer joins Rob West to discuss some conspiracy theories going around today about the Federal Reserve and other matters. MoneyWise contributor Jerry Bowyer is our resident economist and the financial editor atTownhall.com. FEDERAL RESERVE CREATED SECRETLY?The Federal Reserve is a favorite punching bag of conspiracy theorists. Many of them say that the Federal Reserve was created unlawfully in a secret meeting on Jekyll Island of a few senators and powerful financiers. It's sometimes called The Creature From Jekyll Island. Jekyll Island in Georgia was indeed the location of a meeting in November 1910 where draft legislation was written to create a central banking system for the United States. Banking reform was a major issue after the Panic of 1907. But the Fed wasn't created secretly behind closed doors, as some suggest. In reality, the House of Representatives passed the Federal Reserve Act by a vote of 298 to 60. The Senate also passed the measure 43 to 25.President Wilson signed the bill on December 23, 1913 and the Federal Reserve System was born. Large banking interests almost unanimously opposed the Act. FED NEVER AUDITED?It's a myth that the Federal Reserve is never subjected to audits. Independent accounting firms conduct full financial audits of the Federal Reserve banks and the Board of Governors every year. The Fed is also subject to certain types of audits from the Government Accounting Office. THE FED IS PRIVATELY OWNED, SERVES ONLY POWERFUL?Some also assert that the Federal Reserve is privately owned and run at the expense of the public to enrich a few powerful individuals or groups. In fact, Federal Reserve banks actually are privately owned, but that's the only part of this conspiracy that's true. A publicly-appointed board of governors controls all Federal Reserve banks. Federal Reserve banks merely execute the monetary policy choices made by the Board. In addition, nearly all the interest the Federal Reserve collects on government bonds is rebated to the Treasury each year, so the government does not pay any net interest to the Fed. LEGITIMATE CONCERNS ABOUT THE FED:Jerry Boyer says there are legitimate concerns about the Federal Reserve, but they have nothing to do with secret conspiracies behind closed doors and everything to do with bad policy in broad daylight. Boyer contends that the Fed enables reckless spending and inflationary policies. BIDEN COMING AFTER YOUR 401K:Some have heard that the Biden administration may be planning to take over your 401k. In fact, neither the president nor anyone in his administration has the authority to simply take over your 401k. That would require an act of Congress, and it's extremely difficult to imagine many lawmakers being willing to do something so politically risky. Event if the White House and Congress got behind such an idea, which is highly unlikely, it would still have to survive legal challenges. Jerry Bowyer is the financial editor at TownHall.com and author of the book, The Maker Versus the Takers: What Jesus Really Said About Social Justice and Economics. LISTENER QUESTIONS On today's program, Rob also answers listener questions: ●How can you begin to get a handle on several very large debts? Jesus had a “disproportionate recruitment strategy” of calling entrepreneurs who were frontier risk-takers pursuing economic opportunity.  What do these facts say about how Jesus viewed businesspeople and entrepreneurs during his earthly ministry?  Jerry Bowyer, economist and author of “The Maker Versus the Takers,” joins us to discuss why the details embedded in the gospels about where Jesus ministered, who he associated with and how he spoke with them informs us about his view of business and economics.  Jerry is one of the keynote speakers at the October 28 Business On Purpose conference and in this episode we give you a sneak preview his conference talk.  (Register here: https://businessonpurposeconference.com/) Conversation highlights: -On biblical context: Historical and geographic details from the gospels matter “because they are in the Bible,” which almost every Christian says, but doesn't always act on. -What should we know about first century Galilee and its “frontier” culture, and how does that give us insight into Jesus' affection for entrepreneurs?  -Clues about an entrepreneurial culture that emerge from the plague of malaria in Galilee. -Jesus had a “disproportionate recruitment strategy” of calling entrepreneurs (owners, rather than laborers) from the frontier, who were pursuing economic opportunity that entailed significant risk. -The fisherman Jesus called were very likely not “subsistence” fishermen.  They were running fishing businesses.  (15:00) -When Jesus is looking for people he thinks he can work with, he gravitates toward entrepreneurs. (16:15)  What does this mean for 21st century business owners? -How to grapple with extra-biblical sources and better understand and love the Bible even when you aren't an expert in these non-Bible sources.  A quick overview from Church history and even a plug from Jerry for learning biblical languages! -For some people, “a lack of theological education might actually be an advantage” for growing in understanding of the Bible.  (22:45) -We want to know the real, historical Jesus, as revealed in the Bible's gospel accounts.  (28:30) -The story of the rich young ruler and Jesus hints at the economic dynamics of Jesus time and how the ruling class exploited (defrauded) the people.  (Mark 10:17-27)  Connect & Learn More:  Register for Business On Purpose 2021: https://businessonpurposeconference.com/ Connect with Jerry: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jerry-bowyer-b5227a74/ Check out Jerry's podcast, Meeting Of Minds: https://www.meetingofmindspodcast.com/ Connect with Aaron: https://www.linkedin.com/in/aaron-groen/

The days of a trillion dollar national debt would look pretty good today. It now stands at nearly 28-trillion. Here to discuss what that means for the economy and your future is economist Jerry Bowyer. Then it's on to your calls at 800-525-7000. MoneyWise contributor Jerry Bowyer is the financial editor at Townhall.com and author of The Maker Versus the Takers: What Jesus Really Said About Social Justice and Economics. We crossed the trillion-dollar threshold some 35 years ago, now it's 28 or 29 times that, Jerry explains how we got to this point. He then talks about what the Bible says about debt. Deuteronomy 15:6, For the Lord your God will bless you, as he promised you, and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow, and you shall rule over many nations, but they shall not rule over you. Deuteronomy 28:12,The Lord will open to you his good treasury, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hands. And you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. Jerry offers a historical sense of where our economy has been and where we are today and also what a debt crisis would look like. He also offers advice on the best practices to take on how to protect ourselves from the effects of the national debt. On today's program we also answer a couple of your questions: My company matches my 401K up to 4%. I have 250K and the cost basis is 6400. My brokerage firm is telling me to do a NUA. In this conversation Jerry Bowyer argues that Christian business owners are not second-class citizens in God's kingdom.  Can Christian business owners learn anything from the ancient collaboration of the people of Issachar and Zebulun? We talked with Jerry, one of our keynote speakers at the next Business On Purpose conference, about how doers (entrepreneurs) and thinkers/theologians can work together to accomplish good during times of crisis. Conversation Highlights: -Business owners are world changers. -Balancing thinking vs. doing. -Issachar and Zebulun, shared the same tent (or cubicle!). -Zebulun could make things happen and make profits, but they needed Issachar to help them spot changes and opportunities. -The blessing of the relationship between these two types of people (business owners and Christian scholars/thinkers/clergy) should not be severed in the modern Church. -Don't disdain those who are skilled and called to business or view them as simply people who can write checks to support the church.
