¿Has traído a Dios a tu profesión? Steven Covey.* (Grand Rapids, Michigan: Zondervan, 2014), cap. 11.

Sign-up for my free 20-day devotional, The Word Before Work Foundations, at http://TWBWFoundations.com--Series: Wisdom for Work from ProverbsDevotional: 3 of 7One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys. (Proverbs 18:9)There were many causes of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986. But a culture of “slack” work was undeniably a contributing factor. In his book, Midnight in Chernobyl, Adam Higginbotham explains that:The quality of workmanship at all levels of Soviet manufacturing was so poor that building projects…were forced to incorporate an extra stage known as ‘preinstallation overhaul.' Upon delivery from the factory, each piece of new equipment—transformers, turbines, switching gear—was stripped down to the last nut and bolt, checked for faults, repaired, and then reassembled according to the original specifications, as it should have been in the first place. That's an extreme example of what Solomon says in today's passage—namely that mediocre work “destroys.”Of course, it's unlikely that poor performance in your job is going to lead to a nuclear meltdown today. But it can absolutely destroy trust, relationships, and the credibility of your faith with your clients or employer (see Titus 2:9-10). You know that, of course. But what are you going to do about it? Allow me to suggest two actions to help us avoid becoming the slack worker Solomon calls out in today's proverb.#1: Ask the Lord to reveal a specific aspect of your work that you're growing “slack” in. And when the Holy Spirit convicts you, immediately jot down an action you'll take to course correct. Because as my friend Randy Alcorn says, “Nothing is more fleeting than the moment of conviction.”#2: Commit to a dollar figure and a deadline for investing in your professional growth. Avoiding “slack” work should not be our standard. Christ-followers should be marked by a peaceful but relentless pursuit of higher levels of excellence in our work for the glory of God and the good of others. But that takes an investment of time and typically money. So if you don't already have a budget for investing in your professional growth (via courses, conferences, books, etc.), make it your goal to set one this week along with a deadline for spending it. And note that if you work for someone else, they often have professional development budgets or will create one upon your request.Whatever works for you works. But we must invest in our vocational skills. Because as author Matt Perman says, “Shoddy work…is a failure of love.” Love those you work with by taking steps to proactively fight against the temptation to do slack, destructive work today!

What's Best Next: How the Gospel Transforms the Way You Get Things Done (Grand Rapids, Michigan: Zondervan, 2014), pág. 75.

I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.”   Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“   Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“   Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Sign-up for my free 20 day devotional, The Word Before Work Foundations, at http://TWBWFoundations.com Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters (Colossians 3:23)When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandments were, he replied, “Love the Lord your God…and…Love your neighbor as yourself.” As we saw last week, excellent work is one way in which we fulfill Jesus's command to love God by revealing his character of excellence to those around us. As we'll see today, excellence is also necessary for keeping the second commandment in our work.As Christians, we can't say we are seeking to love our neighbor as ourselves and then do our work with mediocrity. Think of the extreme example of a Christian doctor. While that doctor may pray with her patients, share the gospel with her co-workers, and donate money to her church, her most basic form of ministry is in being an excellent doctor. If she were a mediocre medical professional, her patients' lives might be at risk. The doctor's first responsibility in her work ought to be the ministry of excellence—serving her patients as best she knows how, giving them the same level of care she would expect for herself and her family. Now, for most of us, the relative skill of our work isn't going to mean the difference between life and death. But we all have an opportunity to obey Jesus's command to love our neighbors as ourselves by choosing to do excellent work and going far beyond the minimum standards required in our jobs. I love what Matt Perman says on this topic: “Slack work is like vandalism because it makes life harder for people—just like vandalism. Christians are to be the opposite of vandals and slackers in their work. We are to do work that will truly benefit people by going the extra mile rather than just doing the minimum necessary. Excellence in our work is actually a form of generosity and love, and poor quality is a form of stinginess and selfishness. Shoddy work is not just shoddy work; it's a failure of love.”As Christians, we shouldn't seek to do the bare minimum in our jobs to collect a paycheck. If we believe our work is a calling from God, we will “work heartily, as working for the Lord (Colossians 3:23),” seeking to glorify God and love others well by being the most focused and excellent doctors, entrepreneurs, teachers, artists, carpenters, and executives we can possibly be. Excellence in our work isn't just a means to some personal gain. Excellence is our most fundamental form of ministry in our work. Let this truth encourage you to focus on pursuing mastery of your craft, becoming the most exceptional version of yourself for God's glory and the good of others!

Today we're going to talk about five ways for you to work through that feeling of overwhelm that honestly overtakes us every once in a while and leaves us feeling so helpless. For me, it often comes when my schedule is full and overflowing and I just don't know what to do next. It's like a paralyzation that comes over my body and my mind, oftentimes leading to tears, and it's just so overwhelming. But I know that abundance and overwhelm can't really coincide, and I know that the life God plans for us is a life of abundance, and so hopefully today you're gonna listen to some practical things that you can walk away with to just help you work through that overwhelm. On the days that you feel overwhelmed, you can stop and maybe come back to this episode and listen to a few things that you can do to get to the other side of it—to get to that side of abundance, which is the place that we're meant to live because someone once said, "Yes, overwhelming feelings happen, but it's just not supposed to be the norm." Right? Like, it's normal to feel overwhelmed time-to-time. That's just life. I'm not saying you're going to live life without being ever overwhelmed, but I don't want you to live a life of overwhelm. I don't want it to be the norm for you. Before I walk you through these ways to embrace the calm and embrace the abundance, I just want to let you know there's a free download for you here today. Five ways to create this calm amidst the chaos. Five ways to find that abundance in the overwhelm. Get the FREE Download! The resurrection of Jesus Christ is unarguably the most central pillar in terms of Christian orthodoxy. For centuries, the Church has had to defend this doctrine against numerous heretical attacks that have come against it. And yet, today, many professing believers fail to grasp the temporal and eternal significance of this momentous event in their personal lives. Listen as Darrell and Virgil ("Omaha") discuss this most crucial of all Christian doctrines, and why Christians--and the Church--must understand and be prepared to defend the truth about the resurrection of our Lord and Savior. 5 Leadership Questions Podcast on Church Leadership with Todd Adkins

In this episode of the 5 Leadership Questions podcast, Todd Adkins and Daniel Im are joined by Matt Perman, author of How to Get Unstuck. During their conversation, they discuss how theology and practicality go together. BEST QUOTES “You don’t have to choose between being theological and being practical. They are intended to go together.” “I’m driven by questions about the text.” “Let’s be God-centered in how we lead, not just come up with our own ideas.” “There’s two main factors that determine how we spend our time. They are urgency and importance." “We often assume that because something is urgent, it must also be important.” “The urgent things are often times crowding out the important things.” “The noise of urgency creates the illusion of importance." “I’d rather do it, and do it mediocre, than not do it at all.” “If you try to excel in 20 things, you probably won’t excel in anything at all.” “You need to learn the skill of leading in your home. It’s not going to come automatically." “Don’t look down on leadership. You need to learn it.” “I’ve made a lot of mistakes over the years not from lack of good intentions, but from lack of knowledge.” RECOMMENDED RESOURCES The Gospel at the Center What’s Best Next by Matt Perman Psalms 1-72 by Derek Kidner Psalms 73-150 by Derek Kidner Matthew by D. I'm honored to welcome Matt Perman to the show to talk about his brand new book How to Get Unstuck, which I believe will become the new gold standard for how to live a life marked by God-honoring productivity. About the Book:  Most of us are trying to make a difference where we are, yet feel overwhelmed, overloaded, and far too busy. Some even have great, world-changing ideas -- but get stuck trying to make them happen.  How do you get "unstuck" from these things to make a real difference -- without resorting to complex systems that take more time to keep up than they actually save? How to Get Unstuck answers this question by introducing readers to ten core principles that are at the heart of becoming an effective person for the glory of God. These principles are flexible enough for people to adapt and apply them to their own life and context.  This book is more than just good ideas that you read and never apply. How to Get Unstuck walks you step-by-step through the core principles that free you to be more effective in everything you do. Each chapter also has an "Unstuck Clinic" that allows you to reflect and apply the principles more fully to yourself. How can we learn the discipline of personal effectiveness? Starting with the Scriptures and drawing on the best contemporary research, How to Get Unstuck shows you how to live an integrated life. True effectiveness is accomplishing God's purposes, in God's way, and for God's glory, and this book will show you how. About the Author:  Matt is the author of the best-selling book What's Best Next: How the Gospel Transforms the Way You Get Things Done and is a popular speaker on leadership, productivity, and theology from a God-centered perspective. His work has been featured in Christianity Today, The Gospel Coalition, and Desiring God. In 2015 he co-founded the organization, What's Best Next, to help empower Christians to be more productive in all areas of life, and to do so in a way that is God-centered and gospel-driven. Prior to that he served for 13 years at Desiring God leading the web department, serving as director of strategy, and helping build the ministry for greater spreading. He has also served as director of marketing at Made to Flourish, an organization dedicated to equipping pastors to connect faith and work. Today's Guest is Laura Rike, who is a graphic designer and virtual assistant. "I received a degree in Advertising Graphic Design from International Academy of Design and Technology. In addition to my design and production skills, I have been told that I can instantly inject energy and promote a no quit attitude that are assets rarely found these days. I was once told that you don’t mess with a single mother, because once they get their mind set on doing something it gets done! That pretty much sums up who I am and what I am about. Coupled with my incredible work ethic and desire to continue to grow, I am extremely reliable and I have a knack for taking limited information from clients and creating several options to meet their needs. I strive to develop business solutions that are inviting and interesting but also mirror the client’s core values and mission whether it is for Graphic Design, Online Marketing or anything in between!" Key Takeaways Virtual assistant provide a tremendous opportunity to free us time and energy to focus on the things you are best at. When working on advertising/social media/marketing, bring someone in who has fresh ideas or is a skilled writer.  Try to develop long term relationships with your clients. Really invest in their business. Be completely transparent for your clients, let them know that the work is getting done and that it's getting done well. "If you don't have time to have a conversation with someone for even a half hour, how are you gonna reach your clients or your market?" Be careful about who you look for when searching for a virtual assistant.
