Órdenes de equipo en la F1. Leclerc, gracias a Verstappen

¿Recordáis la famosa frase “Fernando is faster than you”? GP de Turquía, 2010. Red Bull.

Show #721   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 9th March 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   50,000 MERCEDES-BENZ EQC TO BE PRODUCED THIS YEAR "It's not easy to introduce electric cars at a high scale - large OEMs are learning the hard way. Earlier this year we heard that Mercedes-Benz's troubles with lithium-ion battery supplies threatened the planned production rate of the all-electric EQC model. The company admits that production of the EQC is a "learning curve"." says InsideEVs: "Mercedes-Benz R&D board member Markus Schafer recently said that the company is back on track with EQC production at a rate that should allow it to achieve 50,000 EQC units in 2020. The main problem seems to be battery constraints from LG Chem's plant in Poland - hopefully now solved for good."   He said: "It’s definitely a new game, dealing with new platforms, dealing with an EV. The issue was not driven by the factory or production process but rather from the battery factory and battery equipment. The ramping up of the battery plant with €700m investment in LG Chem was definitely a challenge and limiting factor. So far, we have overcome the issues and are planning significant numbers for the EQC - returning to the initial number of 50,000 we expected for this year.”   Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 specs: range of 417 km (259 miles) (WLTP) 80 kWh battery pack (384 cells) 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.1 seconds dual motor all-wheel drive   https://insideevs.com/news/402925/50000-mercedes-eqc-production-2020/   MERCEDES G-CLASS ELECTRIC VERSION DUE ‘IN A FEW YEARS’ "In terms of pop culture, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has got to be one of the most iconic SUVs, usually shown as the go-to car for bad guys, mobsters, or rich, powerful individuals with a lot of money to burn." says Motor1: Mercedes-Benz has announced that initial sketches and concept work have begun on the EV version of the G-Class. In lieu of the canceled Geneva Motor Show, CarAdvice spoke to Mercedes-Benz Cars CEO and Daimler AG Chairman, Ola Källenius".   He said: "Yes, the G is going to go electric, we have kicked off the concept work for this, so in a few years you’ll be able to go electric with the G as well."   https://www.motor1.com/news/402878/mercedes-g-class-ev-version/   2020 PORSCHE TAYCAN TURBO S INSTRUMENTED RANGE TEST "when the EPA released battery range numbers for the 2020 Taycan—201 miles for the Turbo and 192 for the Turbo S—it was Porsche's engineering equivalent of the Titanic hitting the iceberg." says Motor Trend: Naturally, the Tesla community gloated. The Taycan appears to be Europe's EV strike three after Jaguar and Audi swung and missed with the I-Pace's (optimistic) 234 miles and the E-Tron's 204. Meanwhile, the Tesla Model S Long Range Plus carries a claimed 390-mile range—nearly double the miles before you start getting nervous about finding a Supercharger.  Porsche commissioned a test by independent testing firm AMCI, which came up with distances 37 percent (275 miles) and 45 percent (278 miles) greater over a mixed city/highway course. "   Motor Trend said: "Now it's our turn, with our instrumentation. To save you further suspense, here are our city, highway, and combined ranges for the 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo S: Normal mode (one loop): 240/274/254 city/highway/combined miles."   https://www.motortrend.com/news/longest-range-electric-cars-2020-19-evs-can-go-distance/   MEV BEEANYWHERE IS AN AFFORDABLE ELECTRIC CUTY CAR BORN IN THE UK "Earlier this week Dacia unveiled the Spring Electric concept, which it claimed would be “Europe’s most affordable all-electric vehicle” when it reaches production in early 2021. Some Might Say that’s great news, but Manchester-based startup MeV has claimed its ‘BeeAnywhere’ EV will be significantly cheaper" reports Top Gear: "Apparently, the two-seat ‘urban vehicle’ has been designed from the outset to be affordable, with prices set to be similar to that of an eight-year-old second-hand hatchback. That’s about the only specific detail we’ve been given on the BeeAnywhere so far though, other than the fact that She’s Electric (of course) and will feature an ‘innovative chassis design’ with graphene-based composite body panels to reduce production and component costs."   https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/mev-beeanywhere-urban-ev-manchester   QEV IS THE FIFTH TEAM TO ANNOUNCE TO ENTER THE 2021 EXTREME E "The Spanish technology firm QEV Technologies will be entering the 2021 Extreme E season, becoming the fifth team to announce their participation in the all-new electric off-road series." writes The Checkered Flag: "The firm is known worldwide for its electric innovations as they design and manufacture electric drivetrains for different motorsport disciplines. They are involved in the ABB Formula E, currently with NIO 333 Formula E team which secured the driver’s title in the first season with Nelson Piquet Jr. Former Fomula 1 driver Pedro de la Rosa will become the Team Principal."   https://www.thecheckeredflag.co.uk/2020/03/qev-is-the-fifth-team-to-announce-to-enter-the-2021-extreme-e/   VW WILL BE THE 1ST MASS MARKET ELECTRIC CAR PROFIT MAKER "Volkswagen will become the first global automaker to make money selling battery-only electric vehicles (BEVs) with profits kicking in from 2022, according to a report from Swiss investment bank UBS." says Forbes: "That might raise eyebrows at General Motors, which last week at its EV day said its electric vehicles will be profitable, but didn’t say when. The prediction for VW will also be welcomed by investors, given that the company plans to spend $36 billion through 2024 on a family of electric cars right across its mass market brands. The UBS report is also bad news for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), which will only account for 1.4% globally by 2025."   https://www.forbes.com/sites/neilwinton/2020/03/09/vw-will-be-the-1st-mass-market-electric-car-profit-maker-report/#190da6005415   HONDA CLARITY ELECTRIC QUIETLY DISCONTINUED FOR 2020 "Honda has pulled the plug on the Honda Clarity Electric. The pun is totally intended." writes Roadshow by CNET: "the Japanese automaker said it discontinued the Clarity Electric at the end of 2019. Right now, according to the report, there's no plans for the model to return. Honda confirmed the EV's death with Roadshow and said in a statement, "We will be introducing new, highly appealing all-electric vehicles for the U.S. market in the years ahead." The battery-electric version of the Clarity rounded out a diverse lineup of alternative-fuel options housed in the nameplate. Honda still sells a plug-in hybrid version of the Clarity."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/honda-clarity-electric-discontinued-availability/                 ERA OF WIRELESS CHARGING FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES IS COMING "The more electric cars roam around the city, the more will be the demand for wireless charging. The global wireless electric vehicle charging market is expected to reach $1.48 billion by 2025" reports Renewable Energy magazine: "Currently, very limited number of countries are working on wireless charging for electric vehicles. Recently, the director of the Joint Transportation Research Program at Purdue University announced a collaboration with Germany-based Magment Concrete Wireless Power. The partnership aims to fulfill the future needs of electric vehicles including wireless charging."   https://www.renewableenergymagazine.com/electric_hybrid_vehicles/era-of-wireless-charging-for-electric-vehicles-20200309   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   Why do you think Tesla are quietly delivering the Model Y without the usual fanfare?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 241 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #479   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 22nd May 2019. TESLA’S NEW CLIMATE OPTION, THE ‘PARTY MODE’ IS DETECTED "It has almost been a year since Tesla CEO Elon Musk teased a new Keep Climate On feature specially designed for party animals and campers — now a Tesla hacker who goes by the name of ‘green’ just released a screenshot showing the new ‘Party Mode’ button added to the climate options." report xautoworld.com today: "Bjørn Nyland tested the ‘Keep Climate On’ option in extreme winter temperatures of -15°C/5°F and was able to sleep inside his Tesla Model X. However, the ‘Keep Climate On’ option turns off the car and most of its functions except for the heating or cooling functionality but in ‘Party Mode’ it seems like while the car is parked the center touchscreen and ambient lighting will keep working for the party animals or campers. According to Elon Musk’s statement above, the power outlets/USB ports will also keep working until the Party Mode is On, like the Dog Mode climate feature the Party will roll on until the battery reaches a min threshold of 20%."   https://www.xautoworld.com/tesla/party-mode-coming-soon/   LEONARDO DICAPRIO-PRODUCED DOCUMENTARY ‘AND WE GO GREEN’ "“And We Go Green,” a new documentary about electric street racing, will have its world debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Variety has learned." writes Brett Lang for Variety.com: "The behind-the-scenes vérité look at the ABB FIA Formula E Championship chronicles how the groundbreaking electric car racing series has matured from upstart championship to the world’s fastest-growing sport in four short years. In addition to offering compelling racing footage “And We Go Green” also dovetails with DiCaprio’s interest in combating global warming and air pollution. “And We Go Green” will screen [tomorrow] at Cannes. In addition to the filmmakers and DiCaprio, guests at the screening will include Formula E founder and CEO Alejandro Agag, former Formula E driver Nelson Piquet Jr., Formula E reigning champion Jean-Eric Vergne, Formula E drivers Sam Bird, Lucas di Grassi and André Lotterer."   https://variety.com/2019/film/markets-festivals/leonardo-dicaprio-electric-car-documentary-and-we-go-green-1203218683/   IRISH ELECTRIFI SIGNS €40M DEAL TO BUILD ELECTRIC JAGUAR E-TYPES Electrifi, the Wicklow-based company that made quite a splash last month by revealing it had converted a classic Ferrari 308 to electric power, has announced a deal to build a series of electric Jaguar E-Types." reports Irish Times: "The cars will keep their original structure, but the 3.8 and 4.2-litre ‘XK’ straight-six engine, and its four-speed Moss gearbox, will be removed. The battery pack and electric motor slot into the space vacated by the old oily bits, so in theory it will be simple to restore the car to petrol power if you ever want to bring it back to its original status. Power is expected to be in the 450hp range, giving the car the ability to sprint to 100km/h in around four seconds, and on to a top speed north of 280km/h. No figure for one-charge range has yet been given." "Jaguar itself, which has its own battery E-Type plans. The electric E-Type, or E-Type Zero to give it its proper name, has already made a name for itself, thanks to a cameo role in the most recent royal wedding."   https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/motors/irish-electrifi-signs-40m-deal-to-build-electric-jaguar-e-types-1.3898795   LAND ROVER TESTING HYBRID 2020 DEFENDER "Jaguar Land Rover is testing a hybrid-electric version of its upcoming 2020 Defender SUV. Spy photographers caught a prototype on public roads outside of the company’s research and development center in Gaydon, England. A look into the vehicle’s registration records confirmed it uses a hybrid powertrain." according to Trucks.com: "Land Rover will debut its reborn Defender later this year. After a 22-year hiatus the SUV will be available in the U.S. market as a modernized successor to the rugged original. Among the possible changes is adoption of alternative powertrains such as a hybrid-electric unit. Jaguar Land Rover offers a mild-hybrid Evoque, plug-in hybrid versions of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport and the all-electric Jaguar I-Pace. The electrified Defender could use a hybrid powertrain that regenerates from braking rather than an external charging station."   https://www.trucks.com/2019/05/20/spy-shots-land-rover-testing-hybrid-2020-defender/   FORD AXES 10PC OF WORKFORCE AS IT RESTRUCTURES FOR ELECTRIC CARS "Ford Motor Co. F, -0.39% is planning to eliminate 7,000 salaried jobs around the world by the end of August as part of its Smart Redesign program, according to an email sent to employees that was published by Automotive News." says Market Watch. Whilst The Guardian says: "The cuts are expected to save Ford $600m (£471m) a year, helping it improve its profit margins, as carmakers manage weak global demand and ready themselves for a period of upheaval caused by a shift to electric vehicles."   https://www.marketwatch.com/story/ford-to-eliminate-7000-jobs-or-10-of-workforce-by-end-august-2019-05-20   https://www.theguardian.com/business/2019/may/20/ford-motor-company-cut-7000-jobs-500-uk   BHP RECHARGES ITS ELECTRIC VEHICLE TAKE-UP FORECASTS "BHP has lifted its forecasts for the adoption of electric vehicles around the world, a phenomenon that will have substantial ramifications for the world's biggest miner. It now estimates at least 132 million EVs will be on the world's roads in 2035, and at least 561 million in the middle of the century. These numbers are its "low-case" forecasts, and it also suggested take-up could be higher." says Sydney Morning Herald: "The miner is watching the developing EV market closely, given its activities around the world. It has significant copper and nickel operations - two commodities that are essential to EV batteries. It also has significant oil operations and has said it sees continued demand for the commodity. The company signalled its optimism in the growth of EVs last week, when it confirmed it would retain its Nickel West business, with chief executive Andrew Mackenzie citing the potential growth in the business due to "the expected growth in battery markets"."   https://www.smh.com.au/business/companies/bhp-recharges-its-electric-vehicle-take-up-forecasts-20190521-p51pix.html   HOW DOES A 2012 TESLA MODEL S STACK UP AGAINST A 2019 AUDI E-TRON? "Should you skip these newfangled EVs and get a used Tesla instead?" is the question asked by InsideEVs today: "the e-tron is the culmination of over four years of development, and represents one of the most expensive projects in the automaker’s history. Nonetheless, its battery specs don’t rival those of the cars coming out of Fremont. In absolute terms, the brand-new e-tron’s range is just below that of the oldest Model S. When you look at miles of range per kWh of battery size, the comparison is even more lopsided. In 2012, the EPA range for the Model S with a 60 kWh battery pack was 208 miles. The 2019 e-tron delivers 204 miles with a 95 kWh (83.6 kWh useable) pack. A seven-year-old Model S with a battery pack of similar size (85 kWh) offers a range of 265 miles. Meanwhile, Model X gets 250 miles from a 75 kWh battery pack, and the Model 3 Standard Range Plus gets 240 miles from a 55 kWh pack."   https://insideevs.com/reviews/350645/2012-tesla-model-s-vs-audi-etron/   NEXT-GEN BMW I8 COULD GO FULLY ELECTRIC "The BMW i8 is a stylish, futuristic-looking plug-in hybrid, but a new report is suggesting the second-generation model could go fully electric. While the current car has a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder internal combustion engine, an electric motor and an 11.6 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, Autocar reports that BMW executives are leaning towards making the its successor an all-electric." according to CarScoops: "sources told the publication the switch to an electric powertrain would provide a “tangible link” to the company’s effort in Formula E. This is understandable and it would likely help to serve as a halo model for the company’s upcoming slate of electric vehicles."   https://www.carscoops.com/2019/05/next-gen-bmw-i8-could-go-fully-electric-challenge-tesla-roadster   BMW UPDATES ITS PLUG-IN HYBRID LINEUP: MORE ELECTRIC RANGE "BMW announced a major refresh of its lineup, including plug-in hybrid versions of several models, scheduled for summer 2019. In effect, all PHEVs will be equipped with new, higher energy dense batteries for longer all-electric range, among other improvements." reports InsideEVs: "The upgraded versions of the BMW PHEVs come just in time to not harm severely the plug-in sales results, which didn't bring any growth for the past few months. The list of updated plug-ins (production form July/August 2019) includes: BMW 330e iPerformance BMW 530e iPerformance BMW 530e xDrive iPerformance BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance BMW 225xe Active Tourer iPerformance BMW 745e iPerformance (in three versions: BMW 745e, BMW 745Le, BMW 745Le xDrive) is already in production"   https://insideevs.com/news/350511/bmw-updates-plugin-hybrid-lineup-summer/   FIRST ALL-ELECTRIC MINICABS TO HIT LONDON IN FIGHT FOR CLEANER AIR "Addison Lee has unveiled the capital’s first all-electric minicab in a boost for efforts to tackle toxic fumes. The firm is to trial the £70,000 Audi e-tron for six months to assess the practicality of a vehicle that has a 250-mile range before needing to be recharged." says Evening Standard newspaper: "Addison Lee will test five electric Audis on its premium Tristar chauffeur service as part of its commitment to moving towards a fleet with zero-emissions capability."   https://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/first-allelectric-minicabs-to-hit-london-in-fight-for-cleaner-air-a4147536.html   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Rimac C_Two Sells Out, EV Parade In New York and New Tesla Maps Beta | 1 April 2018

EV News Daily - Electric Car Podcast

Sunday 1st April 2018. RIMAC C_TWO SELLS OUT Well we first saw the second attempt Rimac have made at building an electric hypercar at the Geneva Motor Show, and now they’ve just about sold out, according to Autocar. The specs are eye-watering, probably literally, can you imagine how it would feel to floor it and get 0-60 in 1.85 seconds. And it goes to show the crazy advances in electric cars, that people are now getting more interested in the 0-100mph time rather than just 60. Who even wants to get to just 60! That all important 0-100 time is 4.3 seconds. Those figures undercut the new Tesla Roadster however the price certainly doesn’t And what if you keep your foot in? It will get you to 258mph! RImac already have the production facilities so the good news is it will start to be made soon, definitely in 2018, with delivery by 2020. And unlike the first Rimac, of which 10 were made including the one Richard Hammond used to celebrate bonfire night early, this time they’re making 150. And if you join the dots then yes, that means there are 150 people in the world who see the car revealed and say “sure, here’s my $2.1 million”! As for tech, and speed, you get 8 cameras, lidar, 6 radar sensors, 12 ultrasonic sensors and GPS. And you know we told you yesterday about the new Lincoln Aviator which unlocks and starts with your phone? Well that’s SO yesterday. Literally! The Rimac C_Two using facial recognition to unlock and start the car. So good luck stealing one. And if you can’t be bothered to drive one the best cars ever made, your $2.1m buys you Level 4 autonomous driving. Level 4 vehicles are "designed to perform all safety-critical driving functions and monitor roadway conditions for an entire trip." However, it's important to note that this is limited to the "operational design domain (ODD)" of the vehicle—meaning it does not cover every driving scenario. There is an electric motor at each wheel and some very clever technology to manage the power output of each for all-wheel drive safety. And the part which I still think is witchcraft – the front axle works on a single gear, but the rear motors have a two speed carbon-clutch gearbox.   ELECTRIC CAR PARADE FOR NEW YORK Now that those pesky journalists are out of the way, the New York Auto Show can open for real, and comedian Tracy Morgan and Nelson Piquet Jr will led a parade to officially open the show, in electric vehicles. A fully electric Formula E car led the fleet of EVs along 11th to the convention centre on New York’s West Side. It’s the first time an official Formula E car has driven on Manhatten’s roads. The parade also featured the Jaguar I-PACE plus a range of fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles including: Toyota Prius Prime, Chrysler Pacifica PEH, Nissan Leaf, Honda Clarity Plug-in, Volvo XC60 PHEV, MINI Countryman PHEV, Chevy Bolt EV, Kia Soul EV, and others.   TESLA BACK IN GERMANY In a week when Tesla couldn’t seemed to catch a break, from the stock price to recalling 123,000 Model S’s, some good news came through from Germany. Last year the country removed Tesla cars from the official list of models eligible for purchase incentives. This was because of an article which accused Tesla of not actually selling the base model car below the 60,000Euro price limit. Tesla successfully argued that they have in fact delivered plenty of base cars below that price, the whole situation if strange that they were banned for selling them with inventives for three months. So it makes you wonder, in the land of the diesel car which is behind Tesla making EVs, why a German article would print that when it’s not true, AND why the authorities would believe it. Obviously hard to know why, the land of the diesel car which is behind Tesla making EVs, it ever happened in the first place. Did I mentioned that already? Maybe it’s because the incentive scheme is partly funded by the German car industry. Ahhh. OK.   MODEL X AUTOPILOT CRASH However onto the sad subject of the Model X crash in California in which the driver was killed. We learned earlier this week that the metal crash barrier which is meant to be there before the concrete, and absorb any impact, was a lot shorter than it had been in earlier pictures. And according to the Telegraph: “Tesla said on Friday that a Tesla Model X involved a fatal crash in California last week had activated its Autopilot system, raising new questions about the semi-autonomous system that handles some driving tasks. The electric-car company also said vehicle logs from the accident showed no action had been taken by the driver soon before the crash and that he had received earlier warnings to put his hands on the wheel. The driver had about five seconds and 150 meters of unobstructed view of the concrete divider with the crushed crash attenuator, but the vehicle logs show that no action was taken," Tesla said. The statement did not say why the Autopilot system apparently did not detect the concrete   TESLA MAPS BEING ROLLED OUT And according to Electrek, the new Tesla navigation update is being slowly released around the world. The highlights I’ve picked out from their story: it now uses it’s own maps using open source data from MapBox and Valhalla; look out for software update 2018.12 for the beta of Tesla Maps; faster routing and more accurate estimated arrival times are promised. Musk said that with the old system, they were “stuck with legacy 3rd party black box code and stale data”. Now with the new system based on open source modules, they will be able to improve on it over time.   SOLID STATE IN NO STATE SAY NISSAN Magical batteries always seem to be on the horizon, despite incredible cars like Teslas running perfectly fine on established tech like 18650 cells, but despite that some people always think we’re one battery breakthrough away from what’s really needed to get EVs to catch on. But one of those isn’t Nissan, who are downplaying the potential of solid state batteries. Takao Asami, Nissan's senior vice president for research and advanced engineering, said he doesn't expect solid-state technology to be ready for serious deployment before the middle of the next decade. Among the obstacles are cost and manufacturing acumen, he said. "All solid-state batteries, roughly speaking, are still in the initial phase of research. So according to my feeling, it's practically a zero at this stage," Asami said at Nissan's world headquarters here south of Tokyo. Solid-state batteries would replace the liquid electrolyte used in lithium ion batteries with a solid substance that allows for improved energy density, weight, safety and charging time. "It's working in the lab," Asami conceded. "But if we make it bigger and put it in a vehicle, drive for several kilometers and ensure safety and cost performance, compared to a lithium ion battery, we don't have a comparable scenario yet. "We still need several breakthroughs." However Toyota think they’ll be ready in the early 2020s. Speaking on the subject in October, Toyota Executive Vice President Didier Leroy said, "We believe our solid-state battery technology can be a game changer with the potential to dramatically improve driving range."   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. It’s been a long week here. It was a boring Chinese Grand Prix, but like actual China, the political notes rang home, as Nico Rosberg accused Lewis Hamilton of slowing down on purpose. We break down whether Rosberg had a claim, or whether he’s a big crybaby. Spoiler, it’s the latter, and we explain why. We also cover the issues that Renault have going forward, and why Sky’s race coverage was ATROCIOUS. Also, we go in-depth on the latest story to hit Motorsport, and that’s the use of Grid and Podium girls in the sport, the WEC’s half-hearted gesture to remove them, and is Lewis Hamilton a sexist? (Spoiler, again, he isn’t.) We also review the Grand Prix of the Americas, Marc Marquez’s phenomenal weekend, as well as Sam Lowes and Danny Kent’s lower class wins, and the first British double win at a weekend since 1977. IndyCar gets a look with their Grand Prix of Louisiana, and the washout and relative farce that the race became due to the weather and the high number of safety cars as the result of the poor state of the track itself. And yay for the Mayor of Hinchtown and Simona “Motorsport Bae” de Silverstro! And finally, we review Formula E at Long Beach, where Nelson Piquet Jr. dominated for the win, while Jean-Eric Vergne won the podium, if you get what I mean. ? Enjoy the show with me and @RyanErikKing and thanks for listening!
