The satisfaction is just off the charts.”Doug Bowser is the retired President & CEO of Nintendo of America, and current Board Member of Hasbro. Doug is a sales and marketing executive whose nearly four-decade career runs from consumer goods to video games, having led Nintendo of America through a decade of historic growth. Doug led operations across the Americas from 2019 through the end of 2025. During his tenure, Nintendo grew on the strength of the Nintendo Switch — one of the best-selling video game platforms of all time — and he oversaw the launch of Nintendo Switch 2, which became the best-selling console of all time in its initial sales period. Doug also expanded Nintendo's licensed merchandise business, opened the company's San Francisco flagship store, and led its re-entry into the Brazilian market. Prior to joining Nintendo, Doug spent 8 years at Electronic Arts, most recently as Vice President of Global Business Planning, and before that, he spent 23 years at Procter & Gamble in sales leadership roles across Asia, Latin America, and the United States. Doug earned his degree in Communications from the University of Utah — where he later returned as Distinguished Alumnus and commencement speaker, and where, playing endless hours of Donkey Kong, he first fell for video games. Today he serves as an Independent Director on the board of Hasbro. This conversation is hosted by podcast co-founder and P&G Alum Drew Tarvin, Founder & CEO of Humor That Works. Bonus Episode #74 of BGMania: A Video Game Music Podcast. Today on the show, Bryan reviews Duskfade, the throwback 3D action-platformer from Spanish studio Weird Beluga and publisher Fireshine Games, out now on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. In a clockwork world called Tearfeld that's been dropped into endless night by a mysterious Clock Tower, you play as Zirian, a young workshop apprentice who grabs his grandfather's clock-hand blade, teams up with a mechanical bird named Cuckoo, and sets out to rescue his sister and get time moving again. This Musical Review takes a long look at the momentum-driven platforming and the way jumps, grappling, gliding, and rail grinding chain into something joyful, the combat and imaginative boss battles, the storybook realms that stretch from leafy forests to drowned depths to floating heights, and the earnest coming-of-age story sitting underneath all that color. Bryan spends plenty of time on the game's proud Kingdom Hearts inspiration, the Spanish folklore woven into its world, and above all the sweeping, wistful score from composer Rafa del Olmo, breaking down how its recurring melodies and shifting moods do so much of the heavy lifting in capturing that particular PS2-era magic. Email the show at bgmaniapodcast@gmail.com with requests for upcoming episodes, questions, feedback, comments, concerns, or any other thoughts you'd like to share! Between 2018 and 2024, the turnover of Portuguese games companies went from around 5 million to nearly 100 million. In this episode, Kalie Moore sits down with Jefferson Valadares, Co-Founder and CEO of partNerd and President of the Portuguese Association of Game Development Companies, to unpack whether a country long known for exporting its best talent can become a home for original IP. Jefferson has seen the industry from nearly every seat, as Studio GM at EA, Executive Producer at BioWare, Head of Mobile at Bandai Namco, and a board member at Rovio before its sale to Sega. They explore what the AAA years taught him about when to spend and when to wing it, why big companies keep funding games they already know won't work, and what he learned running studio acquisitions at Fortis Games about why most deals quietly lose their value. The conversation also goes inside partNerd, the four-person studio he's building now, and why they're making an original co-op game exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2. Jefferson explains the thinking behind designing for asymmetric skill levels so parents, kids, and non-gamers can play together, why GameShare shaped their commercial model, and how hard it is for veteran developers to unlearn best practice and build something genuinely new. He also revisits Doppio, his early bet on voice as a gaming platform, and the timing that led to selling to Fortis in late 2021. Along the way he lays out the Helsinki parallel he sees playing out in Lisbon, why the hardest gap for emerging ecosystems is product rather than engineering or art, and what he thinks the industry is underestimating about the generation that grew up on Roblox and Minecraft rather than GTA.This episode is brought to you by Appcharge, the payments platform built specifically for mobile gaming that processes over a billion dollars annually. COLD OPEN QUESTION OF THE WEEK: How many members of the Bloodline is too many? Upon exploring a random Gamelan station on Apple Music, Jay heard a song that reminded him of a song from the Nintendo Switch game, Mario Odyssey. That got him thinking about other video game music that sounds like songs we know and love, so he's bringing it back a classic segment! This is 8-bit.Songs:Gamelan Degung - “Gara Gara Cinta”Sonic 3 Ice Cap Zone sounds like “Hard Times” by The Jetzons (there maybe a good reason for that)Nobuo Uematsu - “Dancing Mad, 4th Movement (Final Fantasy VI)”Nick had a great staycation last week and brings back some songs to share on a Three for Thursday. YHWH Nailgun released a 10-track, eleven minute album that's somehow weirder than their last, Gong is still being explored, and 50 years ago this week, a little ditty by Herman's Hermits took the #1 spot on the charts.Songs:YHWH Nailgun - “Magazine”Gong - “Percolations Part I & Part II”Herman's Hermits - “I'm Henry VIII, I Am”This Heard It Through the GREGvine starts off with a detour to Where's One Tho? Meanwhile, Riana shares her perspective as a first time Splatoon player.Highlights The Best Switch 2 Exclusive Yet? – Danny explains why Splatoon Raiders tops his list of Switch 2 games so far (even over Donkey Kong) and highlights its massive success with record-setting user scores on Metacritic. Sensory Overload & Visual Style – Riana shares her thoughts as a newcomer to the series, praising the kid-friendly aesthetic while noting how chaotic the screen can get on higher difficulties with timers, boss health bars, and ink everywhere. Co-op "Call for Help" Mechanics – How the game allows stuck players to call in random online players for assistance, earning bonus rewards together without needing voice chat or complex ping systems. Hideout & Base Progression – Insight into upgrading your player base, trying out new builds in the shooting range, discovering lore relics, and using compasses to hunt down hidden map locations.
