Bucket List Episode: The Garden Route of South Africa, by Rose Kilian Hi there, I'm Rose Kilian, and I'm thrilled to share the magic of the Garden Route in South Africa, a place that has been my home and my heart. Growing up here was a dream, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and a rich tapestry of experiences. Whether you're planning a visit or just curious, I'm excited to take you on a journey through this enchanting region. The Garden Route stretches along the southern coast of South Africa, from Knysna in the Western Cape to Storms River in the Eastern Cape. This coastal corridor is renowned for its diverse ecosystems, pristine beaches, and charming towns. It's a paradise for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and those seeking a peaceful retreat. We are starting our journey in Plettenberg Bay, or 'Plett' as the locals call it. Plett is known for its golden beaches, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports. Visit Robberg Nature Reserve for breathtaking hiking trails and see seals and dolphins. The beaches here, like Lookout Beach and Keurbooms Beach, are best for unwinding and soaking in the sun. Next, we head to Knysna, one of my absolute favorite spots. Nestled between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean, Knysna is famous for its lagoon and the iconic Knysna Heads. Take a cruise on the lagoon, visit the Knysna Elephant Park, or explore the lush Knysna Forest. The forest is magical, with ancient trees and the possibility of spotting the elusive Knysna Loerie bird. Don't overlook Sedgefield, a quieter town that's perfect for relaxing. The Saturday Wild Oats Community Farmers' Market is a local favorite, offering fresh produce, homemade goods, and crafts. The surrounding lakes and beaches are serene and ideal for a peaceful retreat. Wilderness is another gem along the Garden Route. This small town is surrounded by rivers, lakes, and forests, perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, canoeing, and bird-watching. The Map of Africa viewpoint offers panoramic views of the landscape that resembles the continent of Africa, a sight you won't want to miss. Finally, George is the largest town on the Garden Route and an excellent base for exploring the region. It has a rich history, beautiful botanical gardens, and excellent golf courses. The Outeniqua Transport Museum is a fascinating stop for train enthusiasts. For something a bit different, head inland to Oudtshoorn, the world's ostrich capital. The Cango Caves, with their impressive limestone formations, are another highlight. These caves are among the largest in Africa and offer guided tours through their vast chambers. The Garden Route is not just a destination; it's an experience that stays with you. There's something for everyone, from its diverse landscapes to its vibrant communities. Whether hiking through ancient forests, lounging on pristine beaches, or savoring local cuisine, the Garden Route offers endless adventures and memories. Thank you for joining me on this journey. I hope you can visit and create your own unforgettable experiences in this beautiful part of the world. Safe travels, and enjoy every moment in the Garden Route of South Africa! In a historic moment for South Africa, Mia le Roux has been crowned Miss South Africa 2024, making her the first hearing-impaired winner in the pageant's 66-year history. The 28-year-old from Oudtshoorn, diagnosed with profound hearing loss at just one year old, captured the judges' hearts with her vision for an inclusive society, stating that she aims to teach the included to embrace those who are often excluded. Le Roux's win was announced on Saturday at the SunBet Arena at Time Square in Pretoria, where Nompumelelo Maduna and Onalenna Constantin secured second and third place, respectively. for more on this Elvis Presslin spoke to Pan South African Language Board CEO Lance Craig Schultz
In his weekly dose of commentary on local, regional and international politics, United Independent Movement (UIM) President Neil de Beer analyses the Freedom Front Plus move to shun the Democratic Alliance (DA) in favour of the African National Congress (ANC) in Oudtshoorn. He describes the FF+'s Corné Mulder as “a very astute politician” and says his party - with its new partnership with the ANC - is positioning itself as an “alternative for future government”. He also has praise for Police Minister Senzo Mchunu who is “calm, cool, and very structured and collected”. As for the latest raid on a firearm training facility, he says there is no law that stops South Africans from being trained to protect themselves against criminals who are using “weapons of war”. Another Minister who gets his approval is Home Affairs' Leon Schreiber who “actually understands” law and order. On the international front, De Beer looks at how the conflict in the Middle East has spilled over into Europe and the UK “where they have had the most brutal uprisings” - and warns: “And this is making the people across the world go, if this thing kicks off, this is going to be World War III.”
Corné Mulder shares the reasons why his FF+ broke its longtime alliance with the DA, creating a fresh governing coalition with the ANC in the Western Cape town of Oudtshoorn. Mulder, the longest-serving member of South Africa's Parliament, argues that in an era where the biggest political party has just 40% of the national vote, structures that previously defined political opposition are not necessarily still fit for purpose. Mulder spoke to BizNews editor Alec Hogg.

According to a government posting, the US added six entities on Tuesday to its list of businesses subject to trade restrictions, four of which were connected to China's military training. The posting stated that the addition of Grace Air (Pty) Ltd and Livingston Aerospace Limited of the United Kingdom, as well as Global Training Solutions Limited and Smartech Future Limited of China, was made possible by their connections to the Test Flying Academy of South Africa and their training of China's military forces through the use of Western and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) sources. In this dialogue Prof Christo Doherty of ARA speaks to Prof Brett Pyper, the Principal Investigator on the ARA project and the leader of a major interdisciplinary research project based on popular manifestations of jazz culture in South Africa. Currently called the Cosmopolitan Collective, the project has evolved over the last 17 years from an initial study of township jazz appreciation societies in urban Gauteng, through a creative engagement with jazz cosmopolitanism in Accra in Ghana, to become a multi-facetted research project that is using a range of creative methodologies to explore and expand the status of jazz as heritage in South Africa. Currently an Associate Professor in the History of Art department in the Wits School of Arts, Brett is a cultural practitioner, arts administrator, festival director, music researcher and academic. He grew up in Pretoria, now Tswane, and completed an interdisciplinary BA in music and cultural studies at the University of South Africa. He began his career as a facilitator of developmental music projects during the transition from apartheid, before taking up a Fulbright scholarship to study in the US, where he was based for six years. He holds a Master's degree in Public Culture from Emory University in Atlanta, and a PhD in Ethnomusicology and Popular Music Studies from New York University. Between 2005 and 2007 he headed the Division of Heritage Studies and Cultural Management in the Wits School of Arts, incorporating the Centre for Cultural Policy and Management. From 2008 to 2013, he was CEO of the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival (Absa KKNK), one of South Africa's major festivals of art, popular and vernacular culture, which takes place annually at Easter time in the town of Oudtshoorn in the rural Western Cape. He returned to the Wits in 2014 to take up the headship of the School of Arts, which he led until 2021. In this discussion we cover the influence of Prof Steven Feld's "Jazz Cosmopolitanism" project in Accra, and the ways in which the South African project was a response to Feld's work with Ghanian musicians. We look at the impact of the Covid-19 restrictions which scuppered the planned collaboration between Accra and the Johannesburg and the reasons for the choice of Cosmologies as the working title for the South African project. We examine the ways that the project managed the Covid restrictions for their ground-breaking 2020 live concert at Wits, involving creative contributions from staff and students together with South African jazz musicians. We discuss the contribution made to the concert by the local “diga” dance improvisors and significance of such embodied responses for the post-apartheid cultural project in South Africa. We then unpack the surprising motivation for renaming the project as the Cosmopolitan Collective and look more closely at the four distinct streams of practice that have come to be featured in the research collaboration of the Collective.

This is episode 33 and we're focusing on the Cape after spending last episode partly in Xhosaland. By 1771 the inn on the sea – the town in Table Bay – was being referred to as Cape Town for the first time by travellers. It appears there was not even a formal process, just the town at the foot of the mountain emerged over the preceding 120 years and by 1772 there were approximately 7000 people living there. Four thousand whites including 1700 sailors, and 2000 free blacks and slaves. Part of this episode is going to be viewed through the eyes of botanist and Scots gardener and explorer Francis Masson who journeyed through the Cape three times. He arrived in October 1772 to find the acting governor was Joachim van Plettenberg. The newly appointed governor, Pieter van Rheede van Oudshoorn, had died at sea on the way out from Amsterdam. And right there are the men whose surnames would be two future towns – Plettenberg bay and Oudtshoorn. 1772 was an important year because that's when foreign shipping numbers increased significantly because of the American War of Independence which I mentioned last episode. French ships in particular were sailing through the bay regularly because they were supporting the American rebels who were fighting the British. Cape Town was already known as a pretty and orderly locale, it's layout admired by most who visited.

On Saturday, 6 February 2021, Carl Wastie caught up with Joe to get the DL on what he's been up to and on the new single. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to day 3 and 4 of my road trip from Cape Town. In this episode, I visit Safari Ostrich Farm in Oudtshoorn here on the Garden Route in South Africa. It's the only Tractor Safari on an Ostrich Farm in South Africa, and it's interesting to see and learn something new about this weird bird – a specie whose ancestors have been around since the age of dinosaurs. Then I head to Knysna – a quaint town located in the heart of the world-famous Garden Route. If Oudtshoorn is big on Ostriches and Knysna is mostly known for Oysters. So, I go to a restaurant called 34 South at the Waterfront after a long walk to Knysna Head to see the sunset. On my way from Knysna to Port Elisabeth I was driving straight east along the coastline on the N2 Highway. Again, the view from the window of my Toyota Corolla was unreal. On the border between the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape, I get to Bloukrans Bridge where they have the world's highest commercial bridge bungy jump, Bloukrans Bridge Bungy. It's 216 meters (709 ft) above the Bloukrans River. Here I speak to some of the jumpers both before and after their jump. . LINKS: Sponsor Hotels25.com The Radio Vagabond is produced by RadioGuru. The Radio Vagabond podcast is back...! This is an episode that was recorded pre-Corona and is the first leg of my road trip from Cape Town to Johannesburg. I start driving Garden Route to Cape Agulhas – the southernmost point of Africa where the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean meet. Then I head north towards Oudtshoorn and on the way I visit Ronnies Shop that had its name changed to Ronnies Sex Shop as a prank from his friends. He was angry at first but that turned the business around, because as he said: "Sex sells, my friend". See my route on TheRadioVagabond.com along with a few pictures of the shop and some stunning landscape. LINKS: Sponsor Hotels25.com The Radio Vagabond is produced by RadioGuru. I honestly must tell you that I had some great moments running in Saudi Arabia. Yup, that's what todays chat is all about. Running in Saudi… in Riyadh to be more specific. First off: Don't think if you ran on a hot summer's day, that you know what hot is. The Saudi weather has those couple of extra degrees and the thing is, the heat, the hot weather last a long long time. Whether you are destined to go there for work, or perhaps as a tourist… you're your running gear along. Oh maybe you heard or read some negatives stories about this great country… don't believe all the negative stories, rather get firsthand experience and you will find many like minded people and a country that surprises you. Quite different to the image the media sometimes portrays. But, I just want to share you with my hot running experience in Saudi. Especially because so many people told me it would be impossible to run there, not only due to the heat but also that it's not part of the tradition. Short trousers are frowned upon, there are hardly any run events etc. Join me as I clear some nonsense and fake news and present you some firsthand accounts of what it's like. And the friendly runners I met All of them HOT,… Ha Ha. Yes, heat will be a topic throughout this whole podcast. Obviously, because just for starts: what do you guess the average annual temperature is for Riyadh the capital? Come on guess… don't give me the “I don't know” … yes I am listening…. Chances are you are wrong. The average high for Riyadh is…. You better hold on to something…. Are you ready: 32 degrees Celsius or 90 Fahrenheit. Average… Now that is impressive. Did you guess correctly? Wow, congrats genius. Well done clever Trevor. Listen, I grew up in South Africa, and there are some Hot places, be it Upington, or Oudtshoorn where I spent my National Service time. I lived in Delhi for some years, in Mexico, so I thought I knew heat, or hot weather. That's why before I went to Saudi, I didn't think for a second that I would not be able to run there. But the heat is a different one. In Upington on a Hot summers' day it can be 34 Celcius or 94 Fahrenheit. But that is Dezember January February. Riyadh boasts with 5 months of Temperature over 100 Fahrenheit temperatures over 45 are a regular site on your iPhone weather app…. And let me be honest, it is a huge difference. Perhaps now as you are listening to it you are thinking “doesn't sound so much more, does it”? But it is… There is one benefit though… the heat is dry. So for me at least it is much more pleasant than running in the tropics. I am the sort of guy if I see a video about some researcher in the jungle and he is all sweaty, I need to change the channel. Humidity not my thing. Reminds me too much of the time where I had malaria. Yup your run coach thought he's going to die, and the next day the pain was so bad I wished I would die. Ha Ha. But I digress. Back to Saudi, running and heat.

Welcome to the third and final episode from Antigua in the Caribbean. Here you can join us on a so-called Triflexcursion. It's a small startup company run by Mark and Giles. TRIFLEXCUSION We're going on a 2-hour biking, hiking and kayaking tour. First, we ride 15 minutes through St. John's to a beautiful beach, where we get into a kayak – two people in each – and paddle through a mangrove reserve for 30 minutes. Then we get back on our bikes and ride a further 10 minutes to Fort James National Park. But before we go up there, we make a rest stop at the beach. I MET MISS ANTIGUA Here on the beach, there's a small restaurant in a shed. When I enter, there's an older woman with the back to me. She's singing, and I see her being on the phone. Somebody tells me that she's live on the local radio right now on a program is called "The Shut-in Show" – and that this is something she does every Sunday. Her name is Yvonne, and after she hangs up, I chat to her. She shows me a small picture of herself in an old book. The text beside the picture reads: "Former model turned restaurateur. Yvonne "Candy" Pilgrim has run the Candy Lane beach bar and restaurant since 1976. Located near the historic Fort James, the venue is popular with locals and tourists alike." She tells me that she was Miss Antigua in 1967. FORT JAMES WITH CANONS AND A DISCOTEQUE IN RUINS We finish the Triflexcursion up a hill at historical Fort James. It's a place where there are some old canons and a house that some years ago it was used as a discotheque. Now it's abandoned and in ruins. But an exciting place with a great view. And that was all from my fantastic trip to Antiqua. LISTENER RESPONSE I received an email from Daniel, a listener in Dubai: Hi Palle, I have just been listening on my earphones while out on my morning run. It was the Conakry Podcast, so the background traffic noises had me looking over my shoulder thinking it was errant motorcycle or taxi! Your podcasts are quite addictive and a great way to get a dose of vitamin 'travel' in between the two long stretches of the real thing for me. If you're ever in Dubai again let me know. I have met up with many , including Torbjørn Pedersen and Ric Gazarian on their travels passing through the city. Looking forward to your adventures around the world to come. Cheers, Daniel Whitfield Thank you, Daniel. I'll be coming to Dubai in December, so I hope I'll see you then. Daniel mentions Torbjørn Petersen and Ric Gazarion. Tor is an amazing traveler. A Dane who is traveling to every country in the world without flying in one single unbroken journey. You can follow his project on onceuponasaga.dk. And Ric is also a good friend of mine. We've met so far in three different continents. In fact, I met him in London just a few weeks ago. He does a podcast called Counting Countries - where I was a guest recently. He also does another podcast called The Nomad Mania Podcast, where he interviews some of the worlds most extreme travelers. Nomad Mania is a website that divides the world into regions. It's founded by the man that arguably has been to most places in the world, Harry Mitsidis. I guy I also met in London recently for a chat – and that's going to be the next interview here on The Radio Vagabond. Ric Gazarian has also been on The Radio Vagabond when I met him in Chicago. I called that episode: "Gaz is Global Country Counter." All the links are below. If you also want to drop me a line and tell me where you are and what you're doing right now, please use this special email address for this: listener@theradiovagabond.com You can also send me a voice message on WhatsApp. The number is +4540105105. NEXT: BACK IN AFRICA The episodes from Antigua was a bit of a detour from my journey. And in the next episode, we're back on track with my adventures in Africa. When I left you, I was in Conakry and about to leave western Africa after having visited Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, and Guinea. Traveling through these countries over three months was exciting, an adventure and very rewarding with all the exotic places and interesting people I met. I made so many interesting people, and both made a lot of friends. It was exciting but also rough. Physically and mentally challenges, especially when going from one place to another overland in small beat-up crammed minibusses or shared taxies on bad roads. So after three months, I decided that I wanted to get down to Cape Town, which has a very special place in my heart. I'll spend two months in Cape Town, my longest stop on the trip so far. But I still carry my microphone everywhere, so I have so many recordings that I'm going to be sorting through and sharing with you in several episodes. To name a few things: There's going to be a full episode only with Cape Town Uber drivers. I find out that Cape Town is the gin capital of the world and I speak to the young owner of one of the many a small distilleries. I go searching for Sugar – the owner of a legendary small vinyl store and the guy who found Rodrigues in the Oscar Winning documentary Searching for Sugarman. If you haven't seen this film yet, I suggest that you do before you listen to my episode with Sugar Segerman from Cape Town. After Cape Town, I rent a car and go on a road trip through the country. I drive on the Garden Route and make stops in many amazing places in South Africa. Oudtshoorn, Knysna, Port Elizabeth, Durban where I do the worlds highest swing over their football stadium, St Lucia where Hippos are roaming around in the streets at night. I also go to Lesotho, Swaziland, and Mozambique before spending a few days driving around in Kruger National Park looking for The Big Five and end up in Pretoria and Johannesburg. But before that, I need to get down to Cape Town from Conakry in Guinea, and I had a bit of luck as to how to do that. I found a flight with Ethiopian Air that allowed me to have a small stopover in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. And this is where you'll find me in the next episode. Even though my stop was short, a lot of stuff happened here. I end up in the middle of a parade during their most religious event of the year. I made some new friends, I thought. Instead, I end up getting scammed. I promise you that I will share both my ups and downs from this trip. So I will also be brutally honest and share what went through my mind when I think I'm going to die and I have somewhat of a mental breakdown when I think I only had a few more months to live. That's when The Radio Vagabond continues in a few weeks. Produced by Radioguru.co.uk. My name is Palle Bo, and I gotta keep moving. See you. The embattled Oudtshoorn Municipality in the Little Karoo has once again seen a change in power...barely two months after the DA's take-over in July...and weeks after the municipality was placed under administration. The council was thrown into chaos last Friday after councillors of the NPP and a DA councillor sided with the ANC - giving them a majority. Motions of no-confidence were passed...and a new mayor, deputy mayor and speaker were elected. Following the shake up...former Mayor Gordon April is now once again Mayor. The NPP's John Stoffels who in July sided with the DA, has returned to supporting the ANC and retains his position as Deputy Mayor. And ICOSA's Vlancio Donson who was ousted as former Deputy Mayor, is now the speaker. Mlamli Maneli reports...

Welcome to another Ask Coach Parry, and we are getting loads of great questions in as we get closer to the Two Oceans Marathon and the Comrades Marathon. Hannes has submitted his question today. He says he has been running for three to four years, he is training for the Comrades Marathon up run and currently is experiencing extreme fatigue. He is running between 55 and 65km's a week. He did the Kango Marathon in Oudtshoorn, he continued to train the following week. The following Friday they did a 47km long run to Hout Bay and back. This past Sunday he completed the 'half Cycle Tour' (as they're calling it, the Short Argus). He was also supposed to go out for a short run last night, but just couldn't get himself to do it. Hes asking should he be worried, should he start using recovery mix? His marathon time is 1.52, his Comrades Marathon time last year was in 11.54. He did a sub 6 hour Two Oceans Ultra Marathon last year. He is looking forward to your suggestions. Read More · Training Programs · www.CoachParry.com
