As we face uncertain paths in government, reparations has been a vigorous discussion in California. After a landmark 1100 page report composed by a select Reparations Task Force and supported by State Government, two critical reparations bills were to be voted on during the last Legislative Session in the State Capitol. Suddenly and with seemingly no explanation, the vote for those bills did not happen. It would seem that the California Legislative Black Caucus was disjointed. Activists groups like Coalition for a Just and Equitable California has been on the leading edge of community advocacy in this space. Now, as government evolves in its present post-election iteration, new leaders, legislative reset, and an unclear world view, Where do we go from here? We are glad to have attorney Kamillah V. Moore with us to discuss the reprations issue in California and reparative justice across the globe. Tap in

There is this narrative out there that says Black men will not vote for VP KLamala Harris because she is a woman. I have never heard any man speak like that. Brothas are looking at policy as far as I know... And then in California, the California Legislative Black Caucus botched reparations vote advanced after the historic and detailed report delivered by the Reparations Task Force. Some say the bills were flawed. OThers say the bills' author was acting alone - a lone wolf. OThers say the fiscal capacity to administer reparations was not there. Whatever the case, to the everyman, it looks really crazy that our black politicians cant even come together on reparations. But is that the case? What happened? THe people deserve to know. We are privileged to discuss these issues with Dr. Anthony Samad, Executive Director of theMervyn M. Dymally African American Political and Economic Institute at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Also joining us is the Controller of the California Democratic PArty and the Chair of the DSemocratic PArtyh WOmen's Caucus, Carolyn Fowler. This is informative and frank talk.

Southern California's summer of discontent — marked by a series of work stoppages from hotels to Hollywood — has inspired labor-supporting Democrats in the state Legislature to try and change the law so striking workers can get unemployment checks while they picket for better pay and working conditions. In a move toward reparations for descendants of Black American Slaves in California, the SB 490 bill, introduced by Reparations Task Force member Steven Bradford, is now before the state legislature. This bill proposes the creation of the 'California American Freedmen Affairs Agency'. Intended as a supervisory body for reparations, the agency would manage the dispensation of benefits.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

By approving the measure, Philadelphia joins other cities like Detroit and Chicago, and states such as California and New Jersey, which have similar commissions to explore what kind of economic considerations could be given to descendants of enslaved Africans. Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer presented his proposed 2024 fiscal year budget to the Fresno City Council on Thursday, coming in as the largest budget in city history by more than $130 million. Perhaps the biggest takeaway, however, was Dyer's suspenseful introduction to a yet-to-be-determined trash hauling rate increase for Fresno residents. California's reparations task force recently approved landmark recommendations that could lead to billions of dollars for the state's Black residents. But the task force's proposals, which include the potential for more than $1 million payments to some Black Californians, face significant hurdles in deep-blue California. Support of the racial justice movement has faded since then, and the state is now facing a $32 billion budget shortfall that would make launching multibillion dollar programs for Black residents difficult. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Providing new tanks to Ukraine won't change the reality on the ground of the current conflict with Russia, according to retired Army Lt. Col. Daniel L. Davis, who claimed the United States has “no plan” or strategy and warned of the real-world danger of invoking NATO's “mutual defense” clause, which would trigger a nuclear war. California is on a mission to ban a hazardous chemical that gives chrome its distinctive shine, a move that has angered those working in, and linked to, the car restoration and customization industries across the state. End legalized slavery in California. Adopt a Black studies school curriculum that shows racism's devastating results. Stop devaluing Black businesses. These are some of the dozens of recommendations California's first-in-the-nation task force on reparations put into its 485-page interim report. Members say these policy recommendations are not getting the attention that monetary discussions are, even though these policy ideas might have as big an impact. Seven years after the Safe and Responsible Drivers Act gave undocumented residents a license to drive, the state is ready to expand its impact, but the law still has detractors.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Former President Donald Trump brushed off the House Jan. 6 committee's referral to the Department of Justice that he face criminal charges for his actions leading up to the 2021 Capitol riot. A jury in Los Angeles found disgraced Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein guilty of rape on Monday after 10 days of deliberation. California's first-in-the-nation Reparations Task Force has six months until it must submit its final report to the lawmakers who created it, but in numbers floated last week the panel suggested that the state pay some descendants of enslaved people nearly $500,000 each based on what it defines as three harms caused by slavery. The task force—comprised of elected officials, civil rights activists, attorneys, and academics—is also evaluating what it identifies as two further harms, and may assess further damages it says are due to certain descendants based on those calculations as well. As climate change and inefficient water management has left lakes and reservoirs drying up all over the Middle East and beyond, the Israeli government have created desalination plants that convert salt water into fresh drinkable water. Their plan was to pump water from the nearby Mediterranean sea, take the salt out of it and send it traveling throughout the country to the lake when needed. This would ensure an abundant water supply for its agriculture and people.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A nine-member Reparations Task Force has estimated that Black Californians could receive more than $223,000 each in reparations for the enduring economic effects of racism and slavery, more than two years on from the murder of George Floyd at the hands of the police.California has become the first U.S. state to require its agencies to present a separate demographic category for descendants of enslaved people. The New York Times reported on Thursday that the taskforce, which was formed by a law signed by Democratic Governor  Gavin Newsom in 2020, has spent months traveling across the West coast state to learn about the effects of these policies. Those eligible for the reparations, the taskforce said in a March 2022 report , would be descendants of enslaved African Americans or of a "free Black person living in the United States prior to the end of the 19th century."Support the showSign Up For Exclusive Episodes At: https://reasonabletv.com/LIKE & SUBSCRIBE for new videos every day. https://www.youtube.com/c/NewsForReasonablePeople

California's first-in-the-nation task force on reparations will release a report Wednesday documenting in detail the harms perpetuated by the state against Black people and recommending ways to address those wrongs. The recommendations include expanding voter registration, making it easier to hold violent police accountable and improving Black neighborhoods. The report to be released by the state Department of Justice marks the halfway point for the two-year reparations task force. The task force voted in March to limit reparations to descendants of Black people who were in the United States at the end of the 19th century. The report marks the halfway point for the two-year task force's work. The draft report does not provide a comprehensive reparations plan, which is due to lawmakers next year. The report is expected to lay out how California supported slavery before it was technically abolished and oppressed Black residents through discriminatory laws and practices in education, home ownership, employment and the courts. Conversations about the history of slavery are often confined to the North and the South, with the West viewed as a free “promised land.” But California passed laws, like the Fugitive Slave Act of 1852, that reinforced the institution of slavery, and otherwise allowed coerced, unpaid labor in the state. And the laws impacted more than just Black people, too. Historian Stacey L. Smith writes in her book “Freedom's Frontier” that “ diverse forms of American Indian servitude, sexual trafficking in bound women, and contract labor involving Latin Americans, Asians, and Pacific Islanders all kept the slavery question alive in California during the 1850s.” This history has been brought to the fore in recent weeks as the state's Reparations Task Force continues to hear testimony about the impacts of slavery on African Americans. We take a closer look at this part of California's past and why it matters.
