Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 24, 2024 is: sanctimonious sank-tuh-MOH-nee-us adjective Someone described as sanctimonious behaves as though they are morally superior to others. Language or behavior that suggests the same kind of moral superiority can also be described as sanctimonious. // While the subject matter was interesting, I found the presenter's sanctimonious tone rather distracting. See the entry > Examples: “Smart and sincere but never sanctimonious, the awareness-raising drama doubles as a public service message of sorts.” — Peter Debruge, Variety, 13 Mar. 2024 Did you know? There's nothing sacred about sanctimonious—at least not anymore. But in the early 1600s, the English adjective was still sometimes used to describe someone truly holy or pious, a sense at an important remove from today's use describing someone who acts or behaves as though they are morally superior to others. (The now-obsolete “pious” sense recalls the meaning of the word's Latin parent, sanctimonia, meaning “holiness” or “sanctity.”) Shakespeare used both the “holy” and “holier-than-thou” senses of sanctimonious in his work, referring in The Tempest to the “sanctimonious” (that is, “holy”) ceremonies of marriage, and in Measure for Measure to “the sanctimonious pirate that went to sea with the Ten Commandments but scraped one out of the table.” (Apparently, the pirate found the restriction on stealing inconvenient.)

The secret is finally out of the bag! Lee Mack kindly agreed to this interview back in June and we have been practically bursting with excitement to tell you all! That excitement did slightly spill over and we got the name of both his podcast and TV show wrong in the recording of this podcast! Awkward by name, awkward by nature... For those of you living in the UK, you will already be familiar with Lee's work as he has been gracing your TV screens and theatres with his comedy since the mid 90s. For those of you who unfamiliar with his work, as well as being sober, Lee is simply one of the most celebrated and recognisable comics in the UK. From writing and starring in Not Going Out - the longest-running sitcom on air in the UK, to being a team captain on Would I Lie to You? since 2007. As if his writing, comedy and acting weren't enough - Lee also co-hosts the wonderful and hilarious I Can't Believe It's Not Buddha podcast. Perhaps most importantly, for the sake of our podcast, Lee's frankness and simplicity in talking about his sobriety was one of the first things that got through to Hame when he was drinking. We have no doubt that it will have the same impact on some of you. Whether you are still drinking and thinking of giving sobriety a try or are sober and looking for inspiration to carry on! We hope you enjoy this one and much as we both did! Show Notes This episode is proudly sponsored by https://sarahrusbatch.com New year? New you! Yeah, that song with the film clip that has Corey wearing a Spiderman ring. Banger of a track. But if that was your first taste of Stone Sour, how does the rest of the album sound? Is it full of acoustic ballads or does it have too many songs that sound like Slipknot-Lite? We've got a great game for you as well so we hope you enjoy this episode! In 2011, the attention of our nation was consumed by the economic problems caused by the sub-prime mortgage debacle of 2008. That's why everyone thought I was crazy when I wrote these words…“Western Society is in danger of becoming self-righteous, sanctimonious and insufferably judgmental. If history is to be our guide, the next 20 years will be when we move from our agreement of mutual brokenness, ‘I'm Not Okay – You're Not Okay,' to embrace a self-righteous indignation, ‘I'm Okay – You're Not Okay.' Sanctimonious vigilante-ism will become popular as indignant leaders demonize their enemies and rally their followers by appealing to their inborn sense of rightness and social obligation, ‘Let's clean this place up and to hell with compromise. They are entirely wrong and we are entirely right. They are stupid. We are wise. They are evil. We are good.'” “The last time we went through this, America formed a committee in Congress called the House Un-American Activities Committee (1938) and later watched with glee while Senator Joseph McCarthy destroyed countless lives by recklessly branding his enemies as ‘Communists,' and creating the infamous blacklists.” “This sounds a bit far-fetched, doesn't it? I know it does. I'm writing because I want you to be able to look back and recall how absurd this all sounded when I first told you what was on the horizon.” I brought https://www.mondaymorningmemo.com/newsletters/on-the-horizon/ (that 11-year-old prediction) to your attention because I'm going to share something else that I see poking it's head up over the horizon. Are you familiar with the argument that roared among the founding fathers during the 1790's? Thomas Jefferson feared tyranny and was worried that a strong Federal government would stifle individual freedoms. He envisioned a decentralized republic built of small, agricultural towns. Alexander Hamilton feared anarchy and desired the structure and order that a strong Federal government would provide. He envisioned centralized, efficient power at the top of the pyramid. When the Federalists passed the Alien and Sedition Acts in 1798 that restricted the activities of foreign residents and limited freedom of speech and of the press, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison wrote the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions, which called on state legislatures to nullify federal laws. I believe we are seeing the acceleration of that argument between “Federal Power” Hamilton and “States Power” Jefferson, but I believe this time Jefferson will win. I know you would like me to speak plainly, so I will. But first I want to make it clear that I am not advocating the thing I am about to describe. In 2011 I didn't want to see our nation degenerate into two polarized groups that were equally self-righteous, sanctimonious and insufferably judgmental, but it happened anyway. Likewise, I don't want to see a surging escalation of state's rights that ultimately cause our nation to become an expanded and updated version of the European Union, but I believe that is where we are headed. By 2033 you will hear this idea of “each state doing their own thing” being proposed by Alpha Voices that will arise and popularize it. Ten years later, the “ME” cycle of 2043 will be launched in the heady delusion that all of America's problems can be solved by letting each state become, in essence, its own little country. America will maintain a common currency and a standing army to defend the member states, but the real power of the nation will have shifted to the governors and state legislatures. When you cross a state line the laws will change in profound and meaningful ways. By 2063 we will have begun to realize that if you sow to the wind, you reap a whirlwind, and we will begin to mourn what we left behind. I will be 105 years old in 2063 so it is unlikely that I will be paying much attention. But that's okay. I've already seen this...
Some brands are great on social media when it comes to showing awareness and support for a particular cause. Others look a bit desperate and crass and sometimes even attract allegations of tokenism. International Women's Day earlier this week is one example and some companies even fell victim to the Gender Pay Gap Bot. This is a Twitter account, set to find companies using social media to talk up some of their inclusion and diversity credentials but then alongside their original message, adds details of the gender pay gap and highlights situations where women are paid less than men. As the @paygapapp says in its biography - employers, if you Tweet about International Women's Day, I'll retweet your gender pay gap. It's another example of how difficult it is to control the conversation on social media. And a quick bit of internet history…it was this week back in 1995 that the Yahoo search engine launched and it was, for a while, one of the most recognised names on the world wide web.

I watched a tiktoc video about a person restoring a house that had been vacant for years. The people in the neighborhood ridiculed the owner for how terrible the house looked on the outside. Little did they know that it was the inside that the owner was making suitable for habitation first. This reminded me of a biblical principle. I hope you are edified. We were tipped off to this whole Bounty Hunters thing. I'd love to send you a few questions about it -- particularly about what it's been like to watch this blow up in the way it has, and to see so many people taking it seriously. Any interest? -Jesse https://jessesingal.substack.com/aboutSCD: Text or call?Jesse: Your call. I can send you a URL to the thing we use to record the podcast -- that way we could talk by voice but keep you anonymous if you wanted.SCD: I’m at work and won’t be free until Sunday really, if you wanna shoot some questions here on drama I’ll answer, but tbh I don’t know if I have anything that interesting to add.Jesse: All right let's maybe chat Sunday. In the meantime, just send me anything you're cool sharing about why you did the original post and what it's been like watching it blow up. Thanks.SCD: [I did it] [f]or laughs, that’s literally it. I don’t believe in taking the internet seriously, never have. I grew up using 4chan, where nothing was off limits, nothing was sacred, and the only real rule was “the first to take it seriously loses.” I guess I never really grew out of that mindset. I’m older now, have a career, a fiancé, and a life, but I still like to view the internet as the Wild West it once was. A place where you could say anything, be anyone and act as retarded as you like. Many who saw the post probably assume I’m pro-life, I’m not. The truth is my online positions and my real life ones rarely line up. In real life I’m pro-choice, vote Democrat, vaccinated, and a loving partner. Online I’m often pro-life, avid Trump supporter, and a misogynist, because these are the positions most likely to cause drama in today’s zeitgeist.Jesse: What was your reaction to it blowing up?SCD: Surprise. I made the sub one day before work in about 12 minutes before work, posted the thread, and only had time to check it once or twice before it got banned six hours later. It really just speaks to the current state of the culture war that this thing was ever taken seriously by anyone. So many people on both sides are searching for that next 5-minute hate so hard that whether it’s even real or not is often an afterthought. I’ve lost a lot of respect for journalists, even 2 minutes of digging through my post history would have revealed that it was an obvious troll.Jesse: So your thought process is simply “This would be a funny thing to seed”? I feel like folks who are less online have trouble understanding that someone might say something online they don't agree with in real life, and that this leads to a lot of bad coverage of internet controversies. Any thoughts on this side of stuff? I feel like trolling is just generally misunderstood, sometimes willfully.SCD: I don’t really know man, I’m not some internet trolling mastermind, just another dude with a childish sense of humor and a Reddit account. If I had to guess it would probably be something to do with how the internet has evolved. Today’s internet is largely sterile, commercialized, and in my opinion boring. People don’t see the internet as a place where you can be anybody anymore, but instead as a direct extension of who you already are. Thanks to social media most people’s online presence is the same as their offline, whereas before almost everything was anonymous, and you were conditioned to take everything written online with a grain of salt, because you never really knew who you were talking to.Jesse: Do you think part of it is a reaction against piousness and censoriousness? Even as a grown adult there's some part of me that responds to being told I'm not allowed to say something by just wanting to scream it. It feels like the most intense and creative trolling centers on the most hot-button issues, and I feel like that could help explain why.SCD: Oh that's a huge part of it, there's actually a huge overlap between rdrama and r/stupidpol users ( a subreddit dedicated to critiquing identity politics and wokeness as a whole). Sanctimonious, moral busy bodies are a favorite trolling target, because they’re literally everywhere online these days and take themselves very seriously. This website itself is a product of our original subreddit getting censored.Jesse: Last question, I think: What about someone who says, “Look, it's fine to be trollish but people are gullible -- this did scare folks and spread misinformation”?SCD: The sub was up for six hours and had only 63 members before it was banned. The vast majority of people who were potentially misinformed from it stemmed from the journalists who decided to run a story on an obvious troll attempt. I mean yeah obviously I share some blame for making it in the first place, but I’m not gonna lose any sleep over it. This is a public episode. I'm of course not a racist, nor am I a supporter of 'cop killers' or 'sedition' but you wouldn't know it by the trash that passes for 'reasonable' content on social media. Will they ever be held to the same standards as the rest of publishers out here (Congress, looking in your direction?!)
Piers Morgan called the interview, "Sickening. Shameful. Self-pitying. Salacious. Scandalous. Sanctimonious. Spectacularly self-serving."Robert Jobson said, “If she’d wanted to (be close to Kate), she wouldn’t have done this interview." ITV's Chris Ship: "Uncomfortable does not begin to describe how they must be feeling in Buckingham Palace right now."Oh, and the Queen's new Corgi is/was named Charles.

In this episode, I rant about Eric Kemp's supposed search for a Hyper-Calvinist. His point will be, in the end, to claim that all Calvinists are Hyper-Calvinists and all Calvinism is Hyper-Calvinism. While Eric seems to be an intelligent man, educated, articulate, bright, his argument isn't intelligent, it is cogent, it isn't educated, it isn't informed, and worse of all, it isn't sincere.

Why is mainstream media unable to get through to people why the president is bad for the country? It doesn't seem to be from a lack of trying. How can so many people trust a known liar more than a reputable news organization? Millennials are turning away from mainstream media for a multitude of reasons, but confusion still remains as to why organizations like CNN and MSNBC are powerless when exposing the truth about the president.

Last hour we asked Kevin Harlan about the top playoff teams in the NFC. It seems right now that the Hawks, Niners, and Saints are at the very top, followed by the Packers and Vikings, and then the Cowboys, because you have to put them somewhere. Somebody has to win the NFC East. One thing is for sure though, those other five teams have all shown some potential, and this year's playoffs are going to be awesome. On Fun with Audio, OJ Simpsons praises Russell Wilson, Jerry Jones goes off on a radio show in Dallas, and Mike Leach calls John Blanchette a sanctimonious troll. AvA is back and this time with a request from a viewer who suggested the bands Attic from Germany and Ram from Sweden. Wayne went ahead and picked which albums since they weren't a preference. Both bands are part of the NWOTHM scene and you can really hear their influences, Mercyful Fate, Judas Priest etc., on these releases. This is our first AvA with Nate on board so lets see how this works out. What do you think? Are we right? are we wrong? Is Greg a grumpy old man who seems to hate everything? Is Nate too young to even know what he's talking about? or is Wayne Delusional?

Sanctimonious, condescending, narcissist, professional critic. These are just a few of the words officials from the Obama White House used to describe Elizabeth Warren. It’s no secret that Warren’s views differed from those of many officials in the Obama White House, but, as it turns out, many of them just outright hated her. So, what pisses people off when it comes to Elizabeth Warren? And how is that playing out in the 2020 race? Guest: Alex Thompson, who covers the Elizabeth Warren campaign for Politico. Weird, sad and true: One of the most popular WealthySingleMommy posts of all time is this one: You are stupid if you do your own laundry. I summary, the post says: Outsource. You can't build financial wealth, control of your time, or a full, joyful life if you are at the mercy of tedious household chores you are overqualified for, and resent. For a tiny monetary premium, you can save yourself hours and hours of laundry. It's not just the time and money: It is the headspace and energy it takes to think about and manage laundry (and other housework). Why the hell do we have feminism if we're all doing so much freaking laundry?! Outsource that crap, and don't look back. But read the comments on You are stupid if you do your own laundry. People are SO OFFENDED by this notion! Some gems: It’s just laziness and stupidity. She just have to put clothes in the machine once in two weeks. It’s not like she needs do wash it by hand. And she is stupid to wash clothes after one wear if they are still clean and smells OK. I just still don’t see it. It really doesn’t take that long at all. I do it in my FREE TIME and it only takes a minute to throw it in and I talk to my daughter or watch tv for the ten minutes it takes to fold. I don’t have to leave work early to do laundry or anything, so I don’t see how paying someone to do your laundry makes you money. You’re just a rich stupid [bleep!]! Okie dokie! Have a listen to this episode of Like a Mother for more on this (surprisingly) contemptuous topic! Dirty socks and tank tops!

Of all that we do, there is one element which makes our efforts precious or worthless! The epistle forces a challenge on us. Do we want to make a bunch of noise, or do we want to actually accomplish something? One factor is the difference. And that difference is a word some folks today don't really understand. This can be a challenge for some people, especially when we see what that one factor is like, and particularly when we see what it is particularly not like. But knowing this, we can build!
