Directly on the northern edge of Yellowstone National Park, Crevice Mountain rises some 3,000 feet above the Yellowstone River and is a prime example of what makes the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem so extraordinary. The area provides vital habitat for grizzly bears; is an important migration corridor for elk, mule deer, and big horn sheep; and is one of the few designated places outside the park where Yellowstone bison can roam. Now imagine a full-scale gold mining operation right in the middle of this wild landscape. That's exactly what's in store for Crevice Mountain. New roads, clear cuts, blasting, heavy equipment traffic, and a host of other industrial activities would permanently scar the landscape and negatively affect the wildlife that depend on this remote habitat. On top of that, industrial gold mining is a notoriously dirty and destructive activity with the potential to severely impact water quality - and in this case, that means the health of the Yellowstone River. As the communities adjacent to the park have been saying for years: Yellowstone is no place for a gold mine. So, how do we stop a gold mine? On this episode, we sit down with Scott Christensen, the executive director of the Greater Yellowstone Coalition. Scott and the GYC team are taking on the substantial challenge of preventing Crevice Mountain from being mined. Join us as we discuss GYC's history of stopping mines near Yellowstone, the background behind this new mining threat on Crevice Mountain, and what Scott and the GYC team are doing to put an end to mining on the Yellowstone border once and for all. Voices of Greater Yellowstone was created by the Greater Yellowstone Coalition, a conservation nonprofit dedicated to working with people to protect the lands, waters, and wildlife of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, now and for future generations. The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is the land of 49+ Indigenous Tribes who maintain current and ancestral connections to the lands, waters, wildlife, plants, and more.> Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get podcasts.> DONATE NOW TO STOP THE MINE> Learn more about the campaign> Get in touch with us to learn about your giving optionsPhoto > © William CampbellPodcast Artwork > Rachel Dunlap ArtMusic >Redwood Trail by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...)Artist: http://audionautix.com/Support the show

Thriving Adoptees - Inspiration For Adoptive Parents & Adoptees
We all want to love and accept ourselves. But how can we do that when we don't know who we are? What else gets in the way of us loving ourselves? Listen in as Diane explore the truth of who we are, what comes after the fog and much more in this empowering episode. Here's more about Diane from her website:Diane Bay has had a lifelong, unquenchable creative drive. It wasn't until she entered her fifties that she discovered where it may have come from: her artistic birth mother and birth father. The natural world has always felt like home to Diane. As a child she spent hours in the climbing tree in her suburban Chicago back yard, often daydreaming of her birth mother. Little did she know that, at the same time, her birth mom was becoming a famous actress in Hollywood. Karen Black was an icon of the American New Wave cinema of the seventies, starring in prominent films including Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces and The Great Gatsby. But just as Diane longed for her natural maternal connection, Karen's heart ached for the child she gave away. But after Karen signed the closed adoption papers and a nurse carried away her daughter, all the information about the child was sealed away, and her searches turned up empty.Diane tried to find her birth mother also, but sealed adoption records made this impossible until 2011, when Illinois finally opened these records. In July of 2012 Diane received her original birth certificate and saw her birth mother's name for the first time. A quick Google search provided the facts she'd sought for decades, and a face she was familiar with from the silver screen. Right away Diane sent a Facebook message to Karen's fan page.Sadly, at the time Illinois passed the law that unsealed these records, Karen heard the terrible news that she had a rare form of cancer. Her time was running out.But then on August 8, 2012, she read Diane's message and responded with acceptance and joy. And just like that, decades of heartache for both of them vanished, and a reunion was in place. They met in September, in Karen's Hollywood home, with hugs and tears, feeling like family right away. Karen introduced her to her birth father, Robert Benedetti, still a good friend. He has also spent his life in the acting world as a TV producer, theatre director and much more.At the time of their meetings, Diane was producing excellent, nostalgic works with graphite pencils. Karen was immediately impressed, and encouraged her daughter to pursue oil painting. During the weeks Diane spent caring for Karen, she soaked up her birth mothers joie de vivre, her rich and enthusiastic love of life's moments even in the face of her own mortality. Diane's goal is to imbue her artwork with this energetic spirit. On August 8, 2013, Karen passed away. She and Diane had exactly one calendar year together.Diane Bay now lives with her husband on a forested lot near Kentucky Lake. She paints the rural nostalgic countryside of the Mid South. Diane has taken workshops from the Southeast region's fine plein air artists such as Bill Fletcher and Kathie Odom, and online tutorials by national artists such as Scott Christensen and Kathleen Dunphy. She is a member of PAPA Gallery in Paducah, KY and The Chestnut Group in Leiper's Fork, TN, and associate member of Oil Painters of America. For information on Diane's book, please visit FindingKarenBlack.com. God's Glory Seen In Evil Now that we've laid out the Greater-Glory Theodicy that Scott Christensen has presented we unpack what it actually does that others don't. In this theodicy, God's Glory seen in evil is established. This doesn't come from a novel, clever way to get around popular theories. If God is good, why is there evil? And why didn't God stop man from sinning in the first place? We'll get a biblical perspective on these and other questions from Scott Christensen, associate pastor of Kerrville Bible Church in Kerrville, Texas. His book is called: “What About Evil? A Defense of God's Sovereign Glory.” Join us for Tuesday's JANET MEFFERD TODAY
Pastor/theologian Scott Christensen talks about story from a very unusual vantage -- that of the problem of evil and the sovereignty of God. He wrote a massive book called What About Evil? which wrestles with some weighty subjects. So what does this have to do with story and Christian film? Plenty, it turns out. What is so fascinating about Scotts book is that he isn't just trying to find answers to difficult questions through academic tools, exegesis, word studies, and the like, the core component to how he seeks to answer the problem of evil is through our understanding of story. The Bible is God's story. It's sometimes called the Drama of Redemption. And in this book Christensen spends considerable time explaining story and how important it is in helping us to wrestle with this theological issue. His grasp of story in service to theological truth is profound. He is widely read, and quotes extensively from Aristotle, Milton, Tolkien, Lewis, Dostoyevksy, Leland Ryken, Brian Godawa, Northrup Frye, Andrew Klavan, and many others. In this interview we talk about his book, how story helps us wrestle through difficult theological issues, and what storytelling advice he can give to Christian filmmakers. ministryofmotionpictures.org
We're getting into the Halloween spirit with James Wan's Malignant. James has done some excellent work with The Conjuring - does this new original film belong in that class? Also - we check in on the Revoice controversy, Jared's forthcoming work on the subject, and a dab of What about Evil? A Defense of God's Sovereign Glory by Scott Christensen!
Scott L. Christensen must paint - it is core to his very being. His keen eye and probing curiosity of nature reveal a deep love of not just being outdoors – but, rather, immersed in it with all senses engaged. His response to the landscape is visceral. He wants the viewer to feel a deep emotional connection with the landscape. The viewer is not a mere passing observer of a Christensen painting, but is also a participant in the scene – curious, seeking answers to their own internal questions. Nature's beauty presents a cacophony of options. This excites Scott – he looks forward to the process of problem-solving and experimentation that long precedes making the first mark of a painting. Outdoor painting is just the beginning of the process. Developing ideas is fundamental to Scott's approach. Through this process of ideation, Scott seeks to find the key of a painting just as a composer decides the key of a song. It's a process that Scott Christensen appropriately likens to Managing Chaos. Suffering is a fact of life that we must all face. Moreover, it is an element of life that every worldview must provide an answer for. Opponents of Christianity have considered the problem of evil to be the Achilles heel of the Christian faith. However, today's guest sees no problem with the existence of an all-loving, all-powerful God in a world that has suffering. He argues that we must start off understanding the God of Scripture and the rest falls into place. Scott Christensen joined me for this episode of Filter to discuss the problem of evil and the answer that he proposes called “the greater glory” argument. Scott holds an MDiv from The Master's Seminary and is the author of What about Free Will? and What about Evil? He worked for nine years at the award-winning CCY Architects in Aspen, Colorado where several of his home designs were featured in Architectural Digest magazine. Called out of this work to the ministry, he graduated with honors from seminary and now serves as the associate pastor of Kerrville Bible Church in Kerrville, Texas. This reflects Microsoft's strategy to promote and enhance this tool for use not only as a MDM platform, but to replace SCCM to manage PCs. Evil has plagued humanity since the Garden of Eden…and has obviously clouded Carl's judgement. In today’s conversation, the brash Brit attempts to pass as a native Texan, just because he’s been to a Willie Nelson concert at Billy Bob’s wearing cowboy boots and a Stetson. Take a moment to picture the hideous spectacle… Todd, a true native of the Lone Star State, welcomes recent Texas transplant Scott Christensen for a conversation about his most recent work, What about Evil. In the book, Scott addresses the perennial question: “If God exists, and if He’s good, then why does He allow evil?” Perhaps the answer may be found in the unchanging nature of God. Reconciling the existence of God and evil has been a long-standing conundrum in Christian theology, yet a philosophical approach--rather than a theological one--dominates the discussion. In his new book What About Evil?, Scott Christensen examines how sin, evil, corruption, and death fit into the broad outlines of redemptive history. He argues that God's ultimate end in creation is to magnify his glory to his image-bearers, most notably by defeating evil through the atoning work of Christ. Matt Ryder is an award-winning British artist living and working in Dubai of the United Arab Emirates. Matt finds inspiration in the wild beauty of the natural world – whether it’s land, sea, or sky. It’s astonishing that there are still wild places left in the world that have not been painted. That’s the unique situation Matt finds himself in where he lives in the Middle East. Matt takes advantage of the cooler seasons to paint outdoors among the majestic mountains where few people live. Inspired by John Singer Sargent’s landscape paintings - The Moraine and Simplon Pass – Matt strives to capture the feel of the rugged, boulder-filled landscape before him. Braving desert heat, enduring “you shouldn’t be here” looks from people in rare encounters, and bemused by camels curious about what he is doing – these are all in a day’s plein air painting session with Matt Ryder. Before these isolated landscapes change and are lost forever, Matt is on a mission to capture with oil paint the extraordinary, rugged beauty of these wild lands unseen by most of us. Matt Ryder is truly an enthusiastic painter, earnestly painting these wondrous and mysterious landscapes with a clear vision. He became a fine art painter much later in life. The interest had always been there; however, painting remained in the background mostly as a hobby while he ran a successful web-based design and content production company. He and his team wrote software that glued together the intricate processes of businesses and commerce. Striving for the utmost in software quality and reliability, he envisioned each line of code as if it were a finely executed brush stroke of luscious oil paint in a masterpiece. After running his business several decades, Carl now focuses on creating fine art. Oil paint, canvas, and his easel have replaced the command line and software development tools he used for so many years. When working with clients, Carl always sought opportunities to express himself creatively. One such accomplishment was the opportunity to design the award-winning album cover for Trust, by musician Patrick O'Hearn. The album was nominated for a Grammy and received the “Best Album Cover Design” award from the National Association of Independent Record Distributors. Carl is also known as a filmmaker. Along with cinematographer Rick Delgado, Carl recently completed a beautiful and poignant documentary about the story of a local artisan who works with his hands to create beautiful works of art by turning wood on a lathe. The documentary is titled One of a Kind - Analog Made. Embracing the medium of podcasting, Carl produces two popular podcasts: Artful Camera is a podcast about digital and analog photography and filmmaking. As we enter and rise through the ranks of our organizations, we face the opportunities and challenges afforded by two separate yet interlaced aspects of employment: professional development, bettering ourselves and accomplishing goals, and leadership, the responsibility of finding ways to best serve those whom we manage and help them accomplish their goals. To explore this further, we asked three of your ILTA peers to share their experiences, advice and tips. Read the article that summarizes all three perspectives in the Winter 2016 Peer to Peer. Without them, we suffocate.” “Time is always the biggest struggle.” “Nothing is worse than having a great idea and then you forget it because you didn’t write it down.” “Personal expression is a gift that keeps on giving.” “If I don’t have time to paint and to write, then I get cranky.” “What quickens your heart?
