Episode 139: Bridging the Gap to Diversify Leadership in the AEC IndustryHow do you bring accomplished leaders and diverse AEC professionals together to increase the diversity of leadership in the AEC industry? On this episode of Practice Disrupted, we sit down with the team at LeaderFlow: Executive Director Janiece Williams, and John Gavan, CEO of KPFF Consulting Engineers, to discuss their leadership development program and the vision they have to bridge the gap between leadership and professionals of color in the AEC industry. First, John shares how he collaborated with the Southern California Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects (SoCal NOMA). We learn that Janiece was part of LeaderFlow's 2021 pilot program and how stepping into her current role as Executive Director was in response to navigating her path in, and then out, and now alongside the architecture industry. From there, we delve into the details of LeaderFlow's program, an opportunity for professionals of color to coach and mentor each other about lived and shared experiences. Janiece and John also share how creating connections can help individuals navigate the challenges of growing in a career — which is why LeaderFlow invites industry leaders to facilitate curriculum to underrepresented communities as a way to find empathy and be inspired to future possibilities. “This isn't about expecting anything from non-people of color to solve humanity's issues. This is about inviting them to the table to be just as vulnerable — if not more — to engage in this conversation, to show up, and to be a part of this experience with them. This is about having human connection and sharing lived experiences and challenges that we all face, and maybe can relate to, in life.” - Janiece Williams To wrap up the episode, Janiece and John each share how LeaderFlow has impacted their growth from both a leadership and personal development perspective and how firms can become supporters and allies of LeaderFlow's work. Tune in next week for Practice Disrupted's Season 7 Finale!Guests:Janiece Williams, Executive Director of LeaderFlow is a trained architectural designer and one of the original cohort participants from the 2021 pilot program. With over 10 years of architecture experience, she developed a strong desire to help developing professionals as they navigate the architecture industry. This passion led her to commit more of her time to justice, diversity, equity, & inclusion-related causes and initiatives. The impact of the pilot program led her to co-launch LeaderFlow to encourage others, especially Professionals of color, to invest time in their own personal growth and development, and empower them to become great leaders.John Gavan, CEO of KPFF Consulting Engineers is driven by the heightened social unrest in the country and he wanted to find an impactful and tangible way to effect meaningful change in the AEC industry. In 2021, John had the idea to introduce the framework of a leadership development program that he started within KPFF's organization to the Southern California Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects (SoCal NOMA). The first annual program was open to SoCal NOMA members at various stages in their careers and consisted of interactive training sessions facilitated by top industry professionals and leaders.

They also consider whether an overseas staff member is protected under the AMLA if they blow the whistle on financial crime in their sister company in the US, an update on Virtual Asset Service Providers, antiquity dealers joining the regulated AML family and new provisions for enforcement actions and penalties.  Look out - bonus claw backs and banning from acting as a director in the future are now in the goody bag of penalties!

Dennis Lynds was a generous, thoughtful, and prolific by every sense of the word writer that most writers only dream about becoming and was a mainstay at the https://www.sbwriters.com/ (Santa Barbara Writers Conference) for many years along with Ray Bradbury, Charles M. (Sparky) Schulz, and many other artistic and literary lights. Dennis was so prolific, he wrote under multiple pseudonyms. Michael Collins is his best-known pseudonym. Over four decades Dennis published some 80 novels and 200 short stories, in both mystery and literary themes. He was a recipient of the Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America (MWA), the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Private Eye Writers of America and the Marlowe Lifetime Achievement Award from MWA, Southern California Chapter. As Michael CollinsWritten under the "Michael Collins" pen name, his Dan Fortune stories constitute one of the longest-running private detective series written, beginning in 1967 with Act of Fear, which earned a 1968 Edgar Award, for Best First Novel. As Collins, Lynds is largely credited with bringing the detective novel into the modern age: "Many critics believe Dan Fortune to be the culmination of a maturing process that transformed the private eye from the naturalistic https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Spade (Spade) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dashiell_Hammett (Dashiell Hammett)) through the romantic https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_Marlowe (Marlowe) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymond_Chandler (Raymond Chandler)) and the psychological https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lew_Archer (Archer) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ross_Macdonald (Ross Macdonald)) to the sociological Fortune (Michael Collins)" - Private Eyes: 101 Knights (Robert Baker and Michael Nietzel) "After naming Lynds the Best Suspense writer of the 1970s", Baker and Nietzel continue, the Crime Literature Association of West Germany praised him as follows: "The break in private eye novels started with Michael Collins. At the end of the 1960s, he gave the form something new, a human touch needed for years. His novels are much more than entertainment. There is a philosophy behind the detective, and in each book we take a look at a special section of American society." Baker and Nietzel point out a popular phenomenon that began with Collins's first book: "Act of Fear ... inspired the by-now monotonous chant by critics about each new hard-boiled author being 'the best since Hammett,' 'the new Chandler,' and 'the heir to Ross Macdonald.' Fortune enjoys a senior status among modern private eyes", predating Lawrence Block, Robert Parker, Elmore Leonard, Joseph Hansen, Joe Gores, Michael Lewin, and Bill Pronzini. As Michael Collins, he also wrote two science fiction novels, Lukan War in 1969, and its sequel, The Planets of Death, in 1970. Both novels are about mercenaries in a future where they are despised and reviled by most people. When suddenly the society is attacked by a very dangerous enemy, they are called upon to fight and die to protect the same people who were treating them so badly not long before. As William ArdenBeginning in 1968 with The Mystery of the Moaning Cave and ending in 1989 with Hot Wheels, Lynds wrote fourteen novels under the pen name William Arden for the juvenile detective series https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Three_Investigators (The Three Investigators), which was originated by Robert Arthur, Jrhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Arthur,_Jr. (.). Under this same name, he also wrote five novels featuring private eye Kane Jackson, a former military policeman who has become an industrial security specialist after leaving the military. The first Jackson novel, A Dark Power, appeared in 1968. As Arden, Lynds also wrote...

Daniel Keer and Joel Vaughn joined us from the Science and Culture Network. SCN is affiliated with the Discovery Institute. Their main purpose is to advance the position that humans are not the consequence of random processes, exposing bias in science and exposing new scientific ideas related to human origin that help explain the gaps in the conventional explanations. They want to bring the discussion to everyone. Check out http://discovery.org/scnsocal Then we discussed Dr. Axe's presentation. We first explained materialism and I think the a brief materialist view. There were two approaches described by Dr. Axe as ways to counter arguments from materialist view: introspection and observation. The introspective approach was explained as a self-defeating argument: In summary: materialists say all that exists are physical, but that viewpoint can't explain the existence of thoughts. We described the difference between Numerals and Numbers. The observation approach was explained in terms of randomness and likelihood. We explored the alphabet soup example to help characterize the level of probability required for things to be as they are observed today as explained by a pure science worldview. Big numbers, low odds. Hosts: Jonathan Noyes, with Eric Horne and guests Joe Vaughn and Daniel Keer from The Southern California Chapter of The Discovery Institute.
