In Episode 102 of The Chey and Pav Show, the Dynamic Duo reflect on a specific item of clothing that has caused so much stir among educators in the school setting - and that is the hooded sweatshirt. Hoodies on students in the classroom have been contentious for quite some time, and Chey and Pav talk about the reasons why students should be allowed to wear them in class, while also discussing the reasons why sometimes they are not. Chey and Pav bring many perspectives to the conversation and uncover the history of the "hoodie policy" that has existed in so many classrooms and educational spaces for so many years. In Episode 101 of The Chey and Pav Show, the Dynamic Duo reflect on a question posed to them, and other educator podcasters connected to the VoicEd Radio platform, by the EdCan Network advisory board. This big idea encapsulates so much of what we do in education - as researchers, policy makers and active practitioners within the realm of education - and it is, "How will we teach in a post-pandemic Canada?" Chey and Pav discuss the many ways that they have adjusted to teaching during the pandemic, and also the ways in which teaching might look different when the pandemic is behind us all. Enjoy this look down memory lane, and hear about all the ways in which The Staffroom Podcast has left a permanent dent in the growth and evolution of this pair of middle school teachers from Toronto. In Episode 99 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about the evolution they have gone through in their teaching practice in regards to De-Centring Remembrance Day. In an effort to create an atmosphere where the students and their students are centred with their stories and lived experiences, Chey and Pav think about how they have perhaps been centring a single and dominant narrative in their early years of teaching. Combining their knowledge and understanding of Culturally Relevant and Responsive Pedagogy, they have developed a very meaningful activity that utilizes photography to create digital stories that truly highlight and exemplify the identities of the students. In Episode 98 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav reflect on a task that ballooned into incredible Identity and Social Justice work in the classroom. Starting with learning about Bilquis Abdul-Qaadir, an American basketball player that fought international bans on wearing the hijab on the court, Chey and Pav were able to take their learning even further with the inclusion of live webinars for the class, and then furthermore, with the introduction of actual, impactful social justice work, initiated by the students and their outrage. This episode provides a very authentic and organic look at how learning opportunities provided by a district, school or colleague can blossom into the most meaningful and culturally driven topics of conversation, resulting in real change in the community and greater society. In this very special episode of The Staffroom Podcast, Pav is joined by Tim Cavey, educator and host of the Teachers on Fire podcast, co-hosting all the way from Vancouver, British Columbia for a great conversation centered around EdTech. Episode 96 brings into focus the value and hype that come with EdTech tools, all the way from integrated teaching tools like Padlet and Seesaw, to social media platforms like TikTok. Tim and Pav start by discussing whether or not EdTech is indeed way too "hyped" in our Covid teaching experience, and talk about the perspectives of agreement, and then also explore the opposite stance. They then discuss the abundance, or perhaps some would say, over-abundance of EdTech tools that are available to educators today. Tim and Pav round out their conversation by discussing Social Media, which can be a sensitive topic for so many educators, but also can be of such value in the teaching space. Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast for episode #155 with Adam Tyner from the Thomas Fordham Institute[i] (an organization that promotes educational excellence for every child in America via quality research, analysis, and commentary) on his newly released report How to Sell SEL: Parents and the Politics of Social and Emotional Learning. Watch this interview on YouTube here https://youtu.be/BWe04ByXOpk Access the Online Report here https://sel.fordhaminstitute.org/ Access past episodes here https://www.achieveit360.com/episodes/ On this episode, you will learn: The TOP 5 Findings from Adam Tyner's NEW REPORT "Parents and the Politics of Social-Emotional Learning" I'm Andrea Samadi, author, and educator from Toronto, Canada, now in Arizona, and like many of our listeners, have been fascinated with learning and understanding the science behind high performance strategies in our schools, sports, and workplace environments with ideas that we can all use, understand and implement immediately. We do this by covering the science-based evidence behind social and emotional learning (for schools) and emotional intelligence training (in the workplace). Our podcast provides tools, resources and ideas for parents, teachers, and employees to improve well-being, achievement and productivity using simple neuroscience as it relates to our cognitive (the skills our brain uses to think, read, remember, pay attention), social and interpersonal relationships (with ourselves and others) and emotional learning (where we recognize and manage our emotions, demonstrate empathy and cope with frustration and stress). This past week, as I was researching and learning new ideas for upcoming episodes, I saw a notification come through my phone from Twitter that caught my attention. It was from Victoria McDougald, from the Fordham Institute in Washington DC and she let me know that they were about to release a new report that explores how parents view SEL and how they want it taught in schools. We have all seen how the mental-health challenges imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic have made it more urgent to better support students' social and emotional learning needs while also advancing their academic learning, so I put down what I was doing and wrote her back immediately. This topic is urgent, timely and important. Every day I see emails about trainings in our schools to support our students SEL needs and the challenges we have all faced are not going away, they are changing and persisting in a way I don't think any of us imagined. The challenge that I have seen from the very beginning of watching SEL being implemented in schools across the US (starting in 2014 with just 8 States to our present day where all 50 States have some sort of SEL implementation plan) is that educators saw the importance of SEL, but didn't know where to begin, they weren't sure which program to use, how to integrate the SEL competencies into the curriculum. Following many of the early SEL webinars, I noticed this was a common theme. This is why we launched The Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast in June 2019 to gather ideas, strategies and best practices for those interested in learning more about this topic, with easy-to-understand implementation strategies and ideas for our schools and workplaces. The topics we cover on this podcast were going to be an Introduction to SEL Course with a well-known educational publisher, but when this direction changed, I decided to put this content out into the world, for free, to help support educators and those in the workplace. I had no idea that this podcast would gain a global following, going into 153 countries and approaching 100,000 downloads (over 8K downloads/month) as we noticed that educators and those in the workplace were looking for new ways to sharpen their saw—with these skills that are not new, but are newly important. If this is how educators were feeling as these skills were being implemented into our schools, or employees in their workplaces, I wondered what parents would be thinking and feeling? Does the everyday modern parent know what social and emotional skills are? Since launching the podcast, I have had constant feedback from people around the world how these topics are helping people, whether it's from Superintendents in our schools running their District, Principals running their school sites, teachers running their classrooms, or parents looking to find new ideas to inspire themselves at work, or with their own children. As you can see from the topics we cover, these skills (that we have tied the most current brain research) are not just about teaching our next generation to be responsible citizens, or to be respectful. There are 6 competencies that we focus on, based on the research from Casel.org[ii] and implementing these competencies is an important task not only for our students, but also for our teachers. I saw this emerge as a clear hot topic with my interview with Chey and Pav on their Staffroom Podcast[iii] (they are 2 phenomenal educators from Toronto who cover educational topics to improve our next generation of teachers/students) and it became clear that teachers can see the importance of modeling these skills in our classrooms of the future, integrating them into core subject areas, but what do parents think? That's what we will explore on today's episode. I looked closer at Victoria's message to me on Twitter, and she reminded me that “as we enter another pandemic year, the results of this first-of-its kind survey will help educators, policymakers and philanthropists gain stronger parental support and better help students navigate this exceptionally challenging time” and my response to her was “how soon can we speak?” The report, written Adam Tyner, and the Foreword and Executive Summary by Amber Northern and Michael J. Petrill shows 5 key findings that we will dive deep into with our questions starting with the premise that “America's hard nosed focus on academic achievement in recent decades has not improved schools nearly enough” (page 1 How to Sell SEL” and that the Common Core wars taught us that “mishandling communication about education reforms can derail good intentions.” (page 1 How to Sell SEL) so the Fordham Institute partnered with YouGov, a global public-opinion firm to develop a nationally representative survey of 2,000 parents “to gain greater clarity on what parents of K-12 students think about SEL, how they understand it, whether they see it as more help or hindrance, and whether they have concerns about its implementation.” (page 1, How to Sell SEL) **** Since there is a political angle to the report, I wanted to mention that I am a new US Citizen (September 2018) and have only voted once (born in Great Britain, grew up in Toronto, Canada, and moved to AZ, USA a few months before 9/11/01—with a vision to make an impact with education after the Columbine Tragedy—with SEL skills as my motivator). I'm really interested to dive deep with the report author, data analyst and project manager, Adam Tyner, on the results and findings, to see if we can bring more clarity for educators and parents on the future of SEL in our schools, and demystify these “social and emotional skills” that I have dedicated my life's work towards, with the hopes that some change occurs in our schools, and communities of the future. Welcome Adam Tyner, thank you for meeting with me so quickly after the release of this report. I'm sure you can see that I recognize how timely and important this topic is. Before we get to the questions, and the top findings of your report, I have to ask you “How was your honeymoon?” as I know you've just returned! Congratulations on this new milestone in your life. Life isn't all about work, or we would all burn out fast, so I think it's important to recognize and celebrate this time. Adam, let's dive into your “How to Sell SEL” Report. I wanted to go through each of the 5 key findings of the report and discuss each one to perhaps bring more clarity around each of the areas you have uncovered as important for parents of K-12 students. How does that sound? Q1: For Finding #1: There is broad support among parents teaching SEL-related skills in schools, although the term “social and emotional learning” is relatively unpopular. (Page 1) I looked at figure-1 and see the SEL skills that were measured in the survey, and my first thought was. Are parents clear what social and emotional skills REALLY mean? I looked at the survey questions and the term social and emotional learning was defined as “The process of developing self-awareness, self-control, interpersonal skills, responsible or ethical decision-making and civic awareness.” (page 34) I mentioned in the backstory that SEL is not just about teaching our next generation how to hold open doors for each other, or to be responsible citizens. These are character traits that I agree need to be taught (and I saw one character trait being measured)—prepare students to be an active and informed citizen. When conducting this survey, I think there were still some grey areas that could use some clarity for parents to grasp the importance of these skills, that Casel.org has proven with their research[iv] to provide an 11-percentile point gain for students who learn and implement these SEL skills. With this first finding, I wanted to break down the skills that you measured so that parents, educators, and policymakers can see which skills are social and interpersonal, which ones are emotional and the skills that are cognitive. This way, it takes the emphasis off the term “social and emotional skills” that people might have their own cognitive bias with--and look at these skills broken down into these 3 categories, so that we can then see which categories parents place more value on. To break these skills into 3 clear categories, I've used a report developed by Hank Resnik for The Aspen Institute called Integrating Social, Emotional and Academic Development: [v] where he brings clarity to the term “social and emotional learning.” From looking at the 3 categories in Hank Resnik's report, it looks like parents in your survey Valued Setting Goals and Working Towards Achieving Them (93%) which is listed as a Cognitive Skill Approaching Challenges in a Positive Way (91%) which I think would fall under Social and Interpersonal Skills. Parents next valued students Believe in Themselves and Their Abilities (91%) which I would put under the Emotional category. Navigate Social Situations (Social-Awareness-Social and Interpersonal) Respond Ethically (Social-Awareness-Social and Interpersonal) Prepare to be an Active, Informed Citizen (Social-Awareness-Social and Interpersonal) Understand, Express and Control Their Emotions (Self-Management-Emotional) Empathize with the Feelings of Others (Social-Awareness-Social and Interpersonal). Question 1: To me, when we break down the competencies into these 3 sections (cognitive, social and interpersonal and emotional) it seems like parents put the most value on setting goals and working towards them, which is a cognitive skill, Social and Interpersonal Skills (Mindset, Social Awareness) next, and emotional skills last (empathize with others/stand up for people of different backgrounds). What do you think about these findings? When we put the competencies into clear categories, what do you think about the fact that parents value setting and achieving goals over standing up for people with different backgrounds and empathizing with the feelings of others? If page 11 of the report noted a quote about the importance of our citizens to empathize with others, why did empathy show up last in the first findings, do you think? Horacio Sanchez, the author of the Poverty Problem--Empathy plays a critical role in reading comprehension. Low empathy, low comprehension. COGNITIVE SKILLS FIRST Setting/Achieving Goals (93%) SOCIAL AND INTERPERSONAL MINDSET SOCIAL-AWARENESS CHARACTER TRAIT of CITIZENSHIP SELF-MANAGEMENT-Understand and Manage Emotions (82%) SOCIAL-AWARENESS-Empathize with the Feelings of Others (81%) Figure 2: Integrating Social, Emotional and Academic Development (page 3) Social and Interpersonal Skills like: How to navigate social situations Resolving conflicts Showing respect towards others Emotional Skills like: Recognizing and managing one's emotions Empathy: the ability to understand the emotions and perspectives of others The ability to cope with frustration, disappointments and stress Finally, there's Academic or Cognitive Skills, the core skills our brain uses to think, read, remember, reason and pay attention. Skills like: Focus Setting goals Planning and organizing Perseverance Problem solving I have followed Stephanie Jones from Harvard[vi] over the years and her work on SEL Frameworks defines the domains with the three we mentioned (cognitive, social and emotional) in addition to values, perspectives and identity which I think are important to note as well. Do you think that values that include character skills, virtues and habits were clear where they fit into the realm of social and emotional learning instruction for parents? I think Values and Character are separate from SEL skills, and Identity/Mindset/Self-efficacy is important, just like your survey shows with the next findings. Q2: For findings #2: Democratic parents favor schools allocating additional resources to SEL more than Republican parents do. Students should be given honest feedback for them to learn from mistakes/grown (which both parties agree on). When I see the discrepancy with students' SEL needs must be met for them to reach their academic potential (89% for D and 75% for R) it makes me think that R are unclear of what exactly these SEL skills are. If they knew about how CASEL's research shows that students who studied these SEL competencies show an 11-percentile academic gain, wouldn't they all agree that students' SEL needs must be met for them to reach their full potential? Q3: Across the political spectrum, parents regard families as the most important entities for cultivating SEL yet there are partisan differences regarding how and where to emphasize SEL instruction. Q3: I wasn't surprised that the term “Social and Emotional Learning” is less popular than life skills, because going back to our question #1, I don't think there is clarity around what these skills are. Every single SEL webinar I attended began with someone giving a framework or clear definition of these skills so that educators began to see them in terms of SEL competencies. Stephanie Jones from Harvard's Easel Lab[vii] and her work on SEL Frameworks clearly defines the domains with the three we mentioned (cognitive, social and emotional) in addition to values, perspectives and identity which I think are important to note as well. For those who answered the survey and have their own assumption of what these skills are, will choose a term that fits what they think they are, and the problem I see, is that the survey leaves out the research behind these important skills. If we go back to Hank Resnik's report from the Aspen Institute, life skills correlate closer to cognitive skills, but they leave out the skills that I've uncovered in this podcast that 58% of Employers Say Students Aren't Learning in College.[viii] with communication being one of them, which is a social and interpersonal skill. Adam, do you think that if Social and Emotional Learning was better defined with your survey, that all 2,000 respondents saw them divided how Hank divided them, with the research attached, and the survey that follows the importance of these skills in the workplace, that the label or term “Social and Emotional Learning” would have a wider acceptance? Q4: Republicans are somewhat more wary than Democrats that SEL might divert schools away from academics or conflict with their own values. This has been something I have heard for years, from students, teachers, parents, and from our publishers who wonder how important these SEL competencies are. Do these skills really make an impact on our next generation of students? Casel.org's research says it does. I dive deep into the 5 SEL Competencies and why they are so important on a recent podcast episode #152[ix] with an expert in psychology and cognitive neuroscience, Dr. Howard Rankin, since the research is clear and shows us that students with strong SEL health “demonstrate self-control, communicate well, problem solve, are empathetic, respectful, grateful, gritty and optimistic.”[x] “Success in life, and in college and career specifically, relies on student's cognitive, social, and emotional development. (Integrating Social, Emotional and Academic Development: An Action Guide for School Leadership Teams[xi]) page 4 “Research shows that teaching these skills result in immediate and long-term improvement in academic achievements and are a better predictor of success than academic ability alone.” (Perspectives of Youth on High School and SEL Webinar, Dec. 11/18).[xii] Were the parents surveyed aware of the research behind SEL impacting academic achievement? What do think of these findings? Saying they are important and instilling them in your own children are 2 completely different things. Have they ever tried teaching these skills to their own children? I ask this because I've been aware of these skills since I saw them impacting a group of teens in the late 1990s, so of course, when my kids were old enough, I had them setting goals until they hit a certain age, and they started rolling their eyes at me when I would say “ok, what do you want to accomplish this year?” The yellow chart paper that used to hang up on their bedroom walls have been replaced with gymnastics trophies, and my girls don't listen to me anymore…but they listen to their coaches at the gym. I saw that these skills were taught more effectively outside of the home. I can only reinforce these skills, like I do with healthy eating, but they stopped goal setting with me, and would prefer to do that with their coach at the gym. Q5: Differences by parents' race, class and religion are rarely as pronounced as differences by political affiliation and parents of different races prefer varying SEL related program names (Developing Grit/Emotional Intelligence/Positive Youth Development/Character Education). For thing angle, I consulted with my good friend Horacio Sanchez, the author of The Poverty Problem, since our conversation on the podcast covered race and religion, and when I don't know something, I like to ask others to gain a different perspective and he said to me “When non-political issues are politicized, it often stems from how its being portrayed and being informed” and asked “do you think the political debate concerning SEL is related to the lack of understanding of what it is?” What do you think? DIVING DEEPER INTO WHAT PARENTS THINK AND FEEL ABOUT SEL: Andrea and Adams discuss these comments about the view of parents/SEL. “Confidence is built by doing” Andrea discusses with Adam that these skills can translate cross-curricular (math/confidence) blasting through a math problem, building confidence, but have a discussion about it so that it's not missed that it was perseverance and persistence that helped the student to solve the problem. Parents need to teach and reinforce SEL with their kids. Yes, we all must teach and reinforce these skills. Home/schools/sports. There are many skills I cannot teach my children (even though I have tried) but they learn them through their coaches through sport. It's takes a village. We must know how these skills translate back towards our academics, and think deeper about what improves our mathematical skills. (Dr. Ratey's[xiii] work- Naperville's Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) where they scored #1 in science and #6 in math, in the world, proving that there was something unique that Naperville had discovered with correlation of exercise and academic achievement). Navigating relationships is important (which is why it's one of Casel's 5 competencies) and being mindful of behavior and consequences (brings us back to neuroscience and the brain with executive functions/thinking). This is why teachers must be trained in trauma-informed practices and understand how the brain works. Horacio Sanchez[xiv] Dr. Bruce Perry (What Happened to You Book) and Dr. Lori Desautels[xv] all teach how the brain impacts learning. Adam, I want to thank you very much for your time today, discussing something that I know we both agree is important to unpack a bit more. What are your final thoughts? In Episode 88 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about a concept known as "Learning Loss," and whether it should be something of concern for teachers as we emerge from Covid 19. There have been many conversations regarding Learning Loss for years, as it has traditionally been a topic of conversation for summer vacations, however, it has become significantly heightened as we come out of 18+ months of "disrupted" learning. Chey and Pav refer back to their first exposure to this idea a few months ago through a blog post written and shared by Sunil Singh @Mathgarden. It was through this learning that they began to consider the story behind Learning Loss and how it affects students and teachers in educational systems. In the second part of a special crossover episode with The Staffroom Podcast hosts, Chey Cheney and Pav Wander, Beth Lyons discusses the power of stories in education and learning. You can check out Part 1 of this series at the following link:https://open.spotify.com/episode/0Erg1iodNeKborleFljBvi?go=1&utm_source=embed_v3&t=0&nd=1The conversation continues by looking at how we can embed current events, identity, making connections and stories into our learning with students. The importance of consistently valuing, appreciating, honouring, and connecting to the lived experience of students and the school community in order to learn from and validate the stories of the students we have the privilege to work with each day. How are we working with students to build their capacity to not only understand the visual stories they are bombarded with each day but to tell their story through pictures and images? How can we differentiate the modes in which we ask students to tell their stories- whether that's the story of how they communicate their understanding of math or a narrative? The discussion shifts to looking at multimodal ways to capture student's understanding beyond pencil and paper and whether the consistency of working for a length of time in one grade or the experience of changing grades/allocations has helped us on our own learning journey as educators. The discussion ends off with sharing our love for audiobooks and brings the conversation full circle with Part 1 where we discussed oral storytelling. The Counter Narrative: Changing the Way We Talk (and think) About Education
Welcome to the Counter Narrative Podcast, a show designed to change the way we talk, and think, about education. By sharing stories of successes and triumphs, we aim to challenge the dominant narrative that often negatively portrays our disenfranchised populations. I'm your host, Charles Williams. An educator for 15 years, a current school principal in Chicago, and an educational consultant. Let's get started. This is a special crossover episode with Dr. Sam Fecich, host of the EduMagic Podcast, and will be airing simultaneously on both of our shows. If you don't know Sam, she is a professor of education at Grove City College where she teaches preservice teachers about educational technology or special education. During our conversation, we each shared 2 takeaways from the first half of a very interesting school year. Sam explored the very real fact that online teaching and traditional teaching are vastly different and that we need to be mindful of the unique needs of each as we launch into instruction. She also pointed out the need for ensuring accessibility, for both forms of teaching, if we expect students to succeed. Sam continued by challenging so called norms by encouraging teachers to set boundaries and focus on self-care. In fact, a potential 30-day challenge emerged from this idea on how we can commit to pushing back against toxic positivity. Of course I too shared my two ideas by reminding educators that they are not alone in the challenges they are facing as we are all navigating uncharted waters. And I continued to anchor my belief in the potentially cliched, but no less important, concept of Maslow over Bloom. We must take the time to build strong foundations, especially in a time of remoteness and often disconnectedness. We dropped so many names in this show including Chey and Pav of the Staffroom Podcast, Traci Browder of the Intelligogy Podcast, LaKeisha Carroll of the Kickin it With Kee Podcast, Michael McWilliams and Hamish Brewer, two amazing principals. Be sure to check out Edu Magic and all of the other amazing shows that we referenced and of course, if you have done so already, be sure to subscribe and rate this show on whatever platform you are using. In Episode 55 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about coding, as it is now included in the new Ontario math Curriculum. Coding is something that not many teachers have had the opportunity to be able to teach their students, especially in the younger years. Chey and Pav thought about the ways in which they are able to start teaching students about coding and programming, when they likely have had no exposure to it. Chey and Pav tried a few coding activities this past week that don't require the use of technology, and they found that the range of knowledge with the students was quite vast. They concluded that all students should really be starting their journey into coding without the use of a computer or tablet to start - in that they need to understand the WHY behind the coding to begin. And also, from an equity standpoint, there's so much disparity between students and their abilities due to the access that students would have to tech. Chey and Pav introduce Yaritza Villalba, High School Social Studies teacher from Brooklyn, New York, for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment. Yaritza talks about the importance of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy with her students, who are, "Overaged and under credited." Working with older students, Yaritza recognizes the importance of being culturally relevant with teaching. After the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav wrap up by giving a few examples of the coding work they have done with their students, with and without technology, and some of the learning that has arisen from these experiences. https://www.extendednotes.com/after-school-activities/5-hands-on-activities-that-teach-coding-without-a-computer Remember to Inspire, Don't Require, always be a Humble Servant, and Education Never Dies. In Episode 54 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about the stigma of having Covid-19. As a response to an incident that hit close to home, Chey and Pav discovered that there are some unintended consequences to teaching face-to-face during the Coronavirus Pandemic. One of these situations surrounds the scenario of stigmas that get associated with students that might have had Covid-19. Chey and Pav read some really great articles that talk about the mental health issues surrounding being diagnosed with Covid-19, and how to deal with people that might feel alienated and ostracised by their peers because of this. In our case, we apply these strategies and ideas with our students. Chey and Pav discuss being careful and intentional with language with students. Words certainly matter. They discuss the need for us as teachers to be informed with the virus and ensure that students are aware of how it is spread. Chey and Pav introduce Beth Lyons, Teacher-Librarian in the Greater Toronto Area, for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment. Beth talks about the importance of connecting with staff and students as a Teacher-Librarian, and the role of support staff in the school during such a difficult time in face-to-face teaching, especially when so many districts do not have the privilege of having access to their Libraries. After the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav wrap up by providing a few more strategies on how to help their students be more tolerant, accepting and knowledgeable with Covid-19 and how they treat their peers in the case of an infected student. There are many opportunities to address the trauma and mental health issues that might surround the stigmas of having Covid, or being exposed as well. In Episode 53 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about Math and Social Emotional Learning (SEL). The new Ontario Mathematics Curriculum includes SEL as one of the 6 major strands, and therefore there needs to be more of a conversation about what that could look like when embedded in math programming. Chey and Pav talked about a few different resources they used to direct their conversation. They have both received lots of training at school with respect to the new curriculum, and a major piece of their professional development over the past few weeks was centered around SEL. Chey and Pav also were lucky to be able to catch the OnEd Mentors Podcast with Noa Daniel. This past week, the live broadcast was focused on the new math curriculum, featuring a few amazing guests, who are all well-versed with mathematical pedagogy. Noa referenced a TedTalk focused around math, called "5 Ways to Share Math with Kids" by Dan Finkel. In this Ted Talk, Dan discusses 5 principles geared towards sharing math with students. There are important points that Chey and Pav discussed, including - Students need time to struggle, in order to deepen curiosity and the ability to take a risk, and Saying YES to students ideas. The ideas presented were very helpful in establishing a great relationship with students and also helping them along the social emotional pathway with respect to math. Chey and Pav introduce Santiago Meza, principal from Rosamond, for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment. Santiago talks about his experiences growing up, and the lessons he learned from his family. He also speaks about his initiative, #RootedInStrengthCA. After the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav wrap up with some further exploration of what teaching math with embedded SEL might look like. They give lots of great examples of their own experiences as well. In Episode 52 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk an article that they read on Flipboard called, "New Study SHows Children Learn Better While Studying Outside," by Matluba Khan. The article discusses the importance of students spending more time outdoors while engaging in their learning, whether it's face to face or online. Chey and Pav talked about how they have, in the past, taken advantage of the school's outdoor space, and also how they hope to be able to do so when they are back with their students in a few days. Pav talks about what she learned from having Kindergarten and Primary students a few years ago, and how much they learn while outside. Chey discusses the many ways he takes advantage of the outdoors for his physical education program, and how he is looking forward to being able to do this more when school starts, and in other subject areas. The two discuss the idea of Land Based Learning, which is an environmental approach to learning that recognizes the relationship of Indigenous peoples to the land. They talk about the importance of recognizing that many cultures around the world do not have the traditional and colonial way of learning that we have in our schooling, and therefore, many students inherently don't do well in our system because of this unnatural way of learning. Chey and Pav introduce Tara Desiderio, elementary principal from Wescosville ELementary School in the East Penn School District in Pennsylvania, for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment. Tara talks about the importance of connecting with people and listening to what your team needs. After the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav wrap up by a few examples of ways they have incorporated learning in the outdoors, and some of the tools and items that would help them maximize their time outdoors with their students. In Episode 49 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about an article they read called "The Curse of Helicopter Teaching" by Penny Kittle and Kelly Gallagher. In this article, the authors talk about this concept of "Helicopter Teaching" - the act of teaching involving a lot of coddling of students, providing them with explicit lists and step-by-step instructions with regards to writing, specifically. Chey and Pav talk about some of their key takeaways from the article, including their thoughts on the process of Helicopter Teaching, as well as how they can see it being a part of teachers' practice (often unknowingly) and what they sometimes do to be steering clear of it. Pav talks in detail about how this concept of Helicopter Teaching can be universally applied to other areas of the curriculum, and she has most often seen it in Mathematics. Chey discusses how the concept of Helicopter Teaching can be compared to helicopter parenting, and also Lawnmower Teaching, or parenting. They go on to discuss many other parts of the article, which can be read here: https://flip.it/oEzhYZ Chey and Pav introduce Monsieur Steve, Grade 3 French Immersion teacher from Toronto, Ontario, Canada for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment. In Episode 48 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav discuss the need for teachers, administrators, students, custodians and families to Collaborate during this unprecedented time of going back to work. In Ontario, Chey and Pav are preparing to go back to school face-to-face, with no real reduction in class sizes (as of yet). No one has experience with this task and therefore it will be increasingly important for all stakeholders to take this opportunity to really work together in order to develop a plan for students that works. This is truly a time when no one knows what to expect, and no one understands what the results of their actions might possibly be, and therefore it is genuinely a time for everyone to be able to work together to try and develop potential solutions. Chey and Pav introduce Jared Hamilton, Mathematics teacher from Fort St. John, British Columbia for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment. Jared talks about the ways in which Mathematics programs can be delivered in ways the increase participation and engagement with students. After the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav wrap up by briefly reviewing their reflections on going back to school face to face and the importance of being able to collaborate during this time. In Episode 47 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav discuss their best practices as teachers. They talk about what their fallbacks are, whether it is a certain pedagogy, a certain book or resource that they like to draw upon time and time again, or a particular style of teaching that they tend to extrapolate from subject area to subject area. They discuss some of the different resources that they have come across over their 15-20 years of teaching, and which ones have stuck and been impactful in developing great teaching in the classroom. Chey discusses his exposure to Kylene Beers and her resources on Reading in the middle school classroom. Pav talks about when she took a math course with Trevor Brown, who has done lots to improve math instruction. Teachers often have a go-to, a fallback when it comes to their own teaching practice and educational philosophy. In Episode 40 of the Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav reflect on the past school year, and all that it brought forth. They started the conversation by discussing what it was like for them as educators to start their own podcast. They discuss that they have they have connected with teachers all over the world, been invited to participate in conversations and chats that have led to some of the most high quality learning they have ever experienced in their careers, due to the podcast and The Drive radio show. From there, they went on to discuss the monumental change in their teaching practice with the onset of Covid-19. From Crisis Learning, to new technologies, to the development of a teaching platform that has evolved from something that was barely functional to something that might be sustainable, was a huge shift for all teachers. There was then the tragic event of George Floyd's murder, followed by a reawakening for many educators on the dire need for anti-racism work in their classrooms. Chey and Pav reflected on the learning they have done, and the conversations they have been able to have with their students and colleagues on Black LIves Matters and Equity work. They reflected on what this means for them, and other educators, going forward. Chey and Pav introduce Jamie Brown, a VP at Holmdel High School in New Jersey for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment. In Episode 39 of the Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav reflect on the conversations in the past week, in regards to anti-racism and equity. They discuss some of the dialogue and discourse that they have engaged in, coupled with the real pain and emotion felt by so many people in their professional learning networks. Chey and Pav talk about this range of emotions, as well as what it has been able to lead us to going forward; a true sense of community, shared experience, as well as the understanding that bigger steps need to be taken in order to dismantle systemic racism. They talk about some of the small wins that have occurred within society; examples such as NASCAR and sports organizations that have begun to take steps to dismantling the issues that have been occurring for long periods of time. Chey and Pav emphasize that there are so many ways that action can take place in the classroom, but that we shouldn't be fooled into thinking it will be easy. Action in the classroom is hard work. It takes a lot to build up the trust in the classroom, to create a safe environment to be able to open up with students, and also have them open up in return. Chey and Pav introduce Dan Vigliatore, a Physical Education teacher with the Toronto Catholic District School Board for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment. Dan talks about the idea of Educational Resolutions with respect to introverted athletes. After the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav wrap up their takeaways about taking action. They recognize that there is a lot of groundwork to be done before students are able to understand the importance of Action, and this is work we should be prepared to do. In Episode 38 of the Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav reflect on the events of the past week, starting with the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and how it really changed the course of conversations in many spheres, including within education. Chey and Pav touch on many subtopics, starting with the discussion about Voice; specifically their own voice. Chey and Pav recognize that they have the privilege of a platform, and they intend to use it in every way they possibly can. They also talk about being able to amplify the voices of others, namely the marginalized individuals around us. Chey and Pav then move on to talk about what anti-racist conversation looks like in the classroom. They discuss the hesitancy that they experienced this past week from their own students, and possibly why they may have experienced this. They also discuss the challenge of not being in front of their students at this time, and having discussions with their students sitting with them in the room. Chey and Pav talk about the pace at which they can engage with their students, and even with others with respect to the conversations that need to be had. They talk about what it looks like to have the difficult conversations, and then have to move on to the action portion. They need to be able to move past the difficult stages of anger and discomfort and then move on the action part of change. They wrap up by talking about the long work that lies ahead of them. There is a lot that needs to be done. If society is failing, then somewhere along the way, education is failing. There is much work to be done. Chey and Pav wrap up by giving a few takeaways from the episode. They highlight the 5 main areas that were discussed and highlight that the difficult conversations are the first step, and then the action in the classrooms must begin. In Episode 37 of the Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav reflect on the incredible work that has been done by teachers, students, administrators, families - in the face of crisis learning, in the hopes of moving towards remote learning. Education had to pivot on a dime in the face of this pandemic, and teachers, first and foremost, had to completely change the way they did everything for their students in their classrooms. And they did it extremely well. On their morning radio show, The Drive on VoicEd Radio, Chey and Pav had a two-part dedication episode, during which they had an incredible amount of educators submit dedications to other educators, students, parents and administrators - to thank them for the incredible work they have done in the past year with respect to building something incredible for their students during such a difficult time. Chey and Pav emphasize that sometimes the need from appreciation for educators, students and families arises from some negative criticisms that might occur. We use this as an opportunity to reinforce and dedicate some appreciation for our peers at this time. Chey and Pav introduce Dustin Pearson, a SPED Teacher and Coach from Kansas City, Missouri for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment. Dustin talks about his initiative called #WeAreOneTeam - focusing on the culture and relationship building that needs to occur to Increase Student Achievement! After the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav wrap up their takeaways about appreciation. They discuss the necessity for showing appreciation towards all of the parties involved with this difficult school year, as we have all needed to pivot on a dime in order to make everything work. In Episode 36 of the Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav recap the chat conversation that was hosted by Education Never DIes on Twitter a few days prior. They use the chat as a way to work a little deeper into the topic of what conflict truly is. They also discuss the necessity of the sometimes difficult dialogue that needs to happen in order to be able to attempt to resolve conflicts. The culture of the conflict itself is also discussed. We don't want conflict to disappear - conflict is indeed necessary in order to help us grow as an organization. Differing perspectives help us to develop a greater sense of how we are attempting to reach our goals, or work towards our vision and mission statement. Chey and Pav talk about how good leadership plays a big role in ensuring that all voices of of the staff are being heard when there are conflicts that need to be resolved, or problems that need solving. In Episode 35 of the Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav reflect on the #EducationNeverDies chat they hosted a few days prior, on the topic of Grading versus Feedback. The conversation they had with all the attendees was very enlightening, and there were so many great subtopics discussed. During this episode, Chey and Pav took some time to reflect on some of the major themes they found to emerge from the chat. Chey and Pav discussed some of the major themes, such as working towards Mastery Based Learning, verus chasing grades. Another area they highlighted was the conversation surrounding when was a good time to start assigning grades. There was a lot of conversation around the idea that there is a need to prepare our students to be able to do well in high school, college and university, and therefore grading has to become part of the equation at some point. They also talked about the need to develop some intrinsic motivation within their students, and how this can become more of a philosophical conversation for many educators, as motivation tends to be extrinsic for most students. Chey and Pav introduce Dr. Kevin Leichtman, an ELA teacher that also work with Academic Mindset in order to work on burnout and mindset training with students. After the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav wrap up their reflections and takeaways from the #EducationNeverDies chat, and conclude that although it would be an ideal scenario to be able to have a gradeless system, we would be doing our students a disservice by not preparing them for the expectations of higher education. We need to have a balance of grades and feedback. Remember to Inspire, Don't Require, always be a Humble Servant, and Education Never Dies. The battle to thrive with regards to learning new technology to help assist students, as well as tackling social emotional needs has been a great challenge for so many educators. Teachers have also been struggling with being able to get feedback from students in order to drive their instruction. With all of these obstacles and challenges it has been very hard for educators to thrive in this new learning environment. The Dynamic Duo talks about such hurdles such as Anxiety, loneliness and even dealing with sick family members during this time when so many people around them might be dying. These issues can be difficult for teachers to cope with. Chey and Pav introduce their 3 Enlightened Minutes guest, Amy Valentine, from Castle Rock, Colorado, who talks about Future of Schools and Increased access for teachers and students for innovative practices. Future of Schools offers scholarships for students and grants for teachers to be able to empower them to embrace new challenges within education! After the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav discuss some of the strategies and ways to be able to persevere with so many of the challenges they have encountered. Having a support team, keeping a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset, and SMART goal setting are some of the ways that teachers can fight the hurdles that they may encounter. It's much easier to persevere when there are some of these basic strategies being met. Remember to Inspire, Don't Require, always be a Humble Servant, and Education Never Dies. In Episode 33 of the Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav reflect on how we as teachers differ so greatly in our abilities to receive professional development. We are all on different paths with learning for our profession, and oftentimes, the perception is that if there is not active engagement by teachers in a particular professional learning situation, the assumption is made that learning has not necessarily occurred. It's important as teachers to recognize that learning for educators looks different from so many different angles. The development of relationships is important, the use of exit tickets needs to be re-assessed, and engagement needs to be measured in many ways. Chey and Pav talk about processing time, the need to step away from learning and be able to absorb the takeaways from a PD session in order to apply learning appropriately. They discuss being a Guide on the Side as opposed to being a Sage on Stage, and the different it makes to assist teachers with the learning they want to do on their own terms. Pav discusses the different ways that she likes to deliver PD to her staff, and how it echoes the way that she likes to learn. Chey talks about how important it is for PD leaders to not mistake quiet during a session for lack of engagement or learning. Teachers all learn in very different ways, and we have to be able to accommodate for all of them! Chey and Pav introduce their 3 Enlightened Minutes guest, Hedreich Nichols, Middle School Technology teacher from Arlington, Texas, who talks about equity and race and discussing all the difficult "heartwork" that goes into creating inclusive practice. In Episode 32 of the Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav reflect on how support teachers might be feeling a little on the outside, or on the fringe, during this time of remote learning. Support staff members, such as Rotary teachers, Special Education Resource teachers, ECE's and EA's, ESL teachers, Teacher-Librarians, Guidance counselors, and so many other integral parts of the in-school system, have been finding it difficult to work their way in to the world of remote learning, when the classroom teacher tends to be the one leading the charge with all the students. Resource and support teachers are normally deeply embedded into the classroom culture in an in-school environment, however, they may have been finding it a little bit difficult to be able to connect with students right now, when there doesn't seem to be a good place for them to fit in with students. Chey and Pav discuss the idea that the panic mode of setting up for distance learning is finally starting to settle, and now that classrooms are starting to get into a particular routine, it is a good time to start integrating the support staff, who so desperately want to be connected to students again. Some of the ways that teachers have been involved have included Support teachers starting their own classrooms for the students they service, holding small group video conferencing, offering resources to students in large group, small group and even individual scenarios. Chey and Pav introduce their 3 Enlightened Minutes guest, Cathline Tanis, high school teacher who talks about a course she created and teaches called "Race & Gender in Literature," through many interesting and enriching problem based scenarios. In episode 31 of the Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav reflect on what is working in today's remote teaching experience. From staff meetings to lessons and student work, we have made valuable and important gains that have taken us on a new path towards remote E-Learning. However, as we make gains and further embed our skills and efficiencies in designing remote initiatives, there is a likelihood that as we bridge some gaps, such as with technology, we may be creating new ones with other areas of learning. Chey and Pav wrap up the episode reflecting on the “Counter Revolution” that may descend upon students, families and teachers; as we dive further into the remote/e-learning environments, inevitably there will be push back and demand for going back to face-to-face learning. Chey and Pav introduce their 3 Enlightened Minutes guest, Kevin Stoller, the founder of Kay-Twelve Education, who discusses how to create better learning environments in the classroom, based from problem solving strategies. In Episode 30 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about establishing a connection with students in the new Online world of teaching. Going into this new way of teaching was, for many, very short notice and abrupt. There was no time to ease students into the idea of it. Much of the culture building that happened in the face-to-face classrooms was disrupted and completely came to a halt once teachers started setting up their online classrooms. In this episode, Chey and Pav discuss the need for relationship building - to ensure that students are engaged and find meaningful reasons to want to participate in a classroom environment that can feel so isolating at times. It brings students closer to the work, and closer to each other again, when it is so easy to become and remain so distant. The duo talks about some of the ways that they have been able to lure their students into participating on discussion online, by providing them with some simple prompts that allow them to talk about things they want to discuss. Simple things, like talking about a book they are reading, or they music they are listening to, can be great ways to hook and engage kids to want to be online, and to pick up talking with their friends like they once had. Chey and Pav introduce their 3 Enlightened Minutes guest, Kavita Tanna, Deputy Director of Inspire Citizens, who discusses the Why of learning in schools with students from around the world. In these more challenging times, Kavita talks about how the organization has had to alter their message and their means for disseminating it. The Counter Narrative: Changing the Way We Talk (and think) About Education
This episode covers my "Three Enlightened Minutes" for The Staffroom Podcast hosted by Chey and Pav out of Toronto. In it, I discuss moving beyond hastags, or shifting from discussion to action. With the COVID-19 outbreak, so many educators are discussing needed changes but this is the ideal time to put things into place ... and not just temporarily. Take a listen and let me know what you think. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thecounternarrative/support
In Episode 29 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about the New Horizons that are emerging with new learning experiences becoming available to students through E-Learning platforms. The team talks about all the different ways that this new experience has been described, from distance ed, to remote learning and e-learning - Chey and Pav feel like the learning that is currently happening with students in this climate is more about crisis management than learning. The duo goes over several different ways that they are thinking about tackling their new online learning environment - what kinds of work will they offer their students, what will be the expectations from the learning that they do. They discuss what assessment will look like, what evaluation might look like, and what sorts of things teachers should avoid that might cause them undue stress. Chey and Pav discuss the fact that all teachers lie on a particular spectrum when it comes to their experience with technology, and not everyone is on a level playing field, and therefore students will be in different places with their abilities with online learning. Because of all these factors, it cannot be expected that all teachers and all students will be able to master these new environments for learning readily. The Dynamic Duo introduces Christine Ravesi-Weinstein, High School Assistant Principal from Massachusetts for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, as she talks about advocating for mental health strategies for student struggling with anxiety and depression. In Episode 28 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about their at-home learning environment for their kids. They discuss what the atmosphere has been like, what they have established as their schedule for the day, and what they predict schedules will be like once the distance ed programs begin with school. They duo talks about the importance of "Soft Schedules," dedicated time to make and create during the day, and the need for students to have lots of unstructured time. The day cannot be as rigid as it was while we were in school - at home we have to give our children some loose time schedules and frameworks to work around. There should be lots of time during the day to play, there should be opportunity to learn some life and home skills, and there should be time to read. We want to be able to get quality learning out of our children, but we have to remember the social and emotional factors that affect our kids on a daily basis. Chey and Pav offer some strategies that can be employed once distance learning begins for them in the home, and how to go about creating a working atmosphere that works for everyone in the household. The Dynamic Duo introduces Chuck Moss, Principal of Dinwiddie Middle School in Virginia for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, as he talks about building upon school culture in an at-home learning environment. In Episode 18 of The Staffroom Podcast with Chey and Pav, the duo talks about Wellness in the classroom program, as well as a school-wide initiative. They start the episode by talking about the importance of paying attention to student wellness, and how impactful it can be to take care of wellness in the classroom. Chey and Pav then spend some time talking about the different ways they help take care of wellness in the classroom. It can be through Meditation, free-writing or journaling, or even puzzles and games, like crosswords, word searches and sudoku math puzzles. They talk about the different ways that students can benefit from rolling starts in the morning, and not the hard-set beginnings to the day, where students need to be in their seats, ready to learn right at the first morning bell. Having a slower start to the day can be beneficial to students, especially when they are coming in to school from stressful home situations. Chey and Pav talk about some other ways they are able to embed wellness into their daily programming, and also some of the benefits these programs have on their lives. They talk about how much the classroom culture can change when students are given outlets to help them deal with internal and external struggles they may be facing. For their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav welcome Michael Ancona, from Marlboro, New Jersey, teacher and host of The Monarch Experience Podcast - a unique, student-driven podcast. Michael discusses his experience with starting this podcast with his students and how rewarding the whole project has been for him. Chey and Pav wrap up their episode by talking about the different ways in which their school has incorporated Wellness into its School Improvement Plan, and how it has become a norm that teachers have become comfortable with practicing. Chey and Pav always finish their episode with a few of their favourite phrases and mottos, including "Inspire, Don't Require," "Always be a Humble Servant," and "Education Never Dies." ----------------------------------------------------------- You can Check out our 3 Enlightened Minutes Guests: Michael Ancona at: Anchor: https://anchor.fm/monarchexperience Twitter: @theMonarchXP Michael Ancona @TheMancona ----------------------------------------------------------- Chey and Pav are part of the School Rubric team.
