The term toxic masculinity has been gaining traction, and is often used to talk about the type of masculinity where men use dominance, violence and control to gain power and superiority over others.  There's also been an increase in efforts to educate boys in how to talk more about their feelings. But with the rise of Incels, Andrew Tate, free porn, and pick up artists, you could be forgiven for wondering whether we're really making progress at all. So I contacted Mike Nicholson, Director of a programme called Progressive Masculinity. He goes into schools to talk to boys about masculinity. My key aim was to ask him more about how we as parents can better support our boys to develop a healthy style of masculinity. 6 Positive Ways to Manage Negative Feedback at Work – Make Use of Negative Feedback

Enhance.training

Receiving negative feedback at work can be a devasting blow for some or an amazing opportunity for others. I share 6 positive ways to manage negative feedback at work so you can transform all feedback into a valuable learning opportunity. If you have worked hard, getting negative feedback from your manager or getting negative feedback from a colleague can be a painful blow. It hurts. Don't assume the worst. Most managers make negative comments at work to correct or improve what you are doing rather than to try to put you down. Learning how to deal with negative feedback at work in a constructive and positive way will help your confidence and how quickly you learn and thus improve. When you are dealing with negative feedback at work ask clarifying questions. Ask questions until you understand why the negative comments have been made and what you can do to ensure positive comments next time. Don't assume that managers or colleagues will give you great useful feedback from the start. Ask questions. When you have to deal with negative comments at work made to try to put you down, asking clarifying questions can be a great and professional way to counter it and reduce these comments. A key part of how to accept feedback from your boss or anyone is to be appreciative of the feedback. Thank them for taking the time to give you feedback even if you don't agree with the feedback. This ensures you will carry on getting feedback which is a massive help to you. When you respond to negative feedback always think – “What can I learn from this?” This is a great way to stay mentally positive and turn negative feedback into a useful learning opportunity. A great way to manage negative feedback at work is to take positive action following receiving negative feedback. This helps you and demonstrates that you will make changes following receiving negative feedback. Finally, ask for feedback regularly, particularly if you are a manager. The more senior you get, the less useful feedback you get so make the effort to try to get as much as possible. JessEnhance.training

Episode 275: Dolf DeJong talks about ruthless optimism, separating music from the noise, and scarring people in positive ways

Dolf DeJong is the CEO of The Toronto Zoo, home of more than 4,000 animals spanning across a property of 710 acres. In his childhood, Dolf visited the zoo often and developed a strong passion and connection to wildlife. An educator by training, Dolf was sure he would end up in the classroom, but stumbled into the path of management and tapped into his passion for wildlife he developed years ago. Today, Dolf leads the Toronto Zoo team in their mission to connect guests to wildlife and create the core link between connection and caring in order to fight the growing risk of extinction worldwide. In this interview, Dolf shares his insights on the power of ruthless optimism, separating music from the noise, and scarring people in positive ways.  Ruthless Optimism   "The spirit of ruthless optimism is required."   Dolf doesn't sugarcoat the fact that the environment isn't getting better. To combat the constant stress and fatigue caused by the negative news we are always surrounded by, Dolf has found serenity through the power of ruthless optimism. By constantly seeing the good in things, we can still feel encouraged to make a difference and fight through the negatives to see the light in the dark tunnel.    The power of ruthless optimism spans further than just the environment. In the operations world, overcoming challenges that linger from the pandemic in addition to other common issues like understaffing can create stress and fatigue and cause burnout. By applying these same concepts, the spirit of ruthless optimism will help you through the challenges and allow you to keep making strides day by day.  Separating Music from the Noise   "We want to respect tradition, but we don't want to fall to toxic nostalgia."   Within the Toronto Zoo operation, Dolf is faced with the challenge of taking care of his frontline team members as well as over 4,000 animals. Every day, Dolf meets with team members and animals to find where the pulse is to separate the music from the noise and turn that into meaningful action to evolve the operation.    Dolf stresses the importance of having a diversity of voices around you to not get lost in the noise. In addition, having the ability to talk to anyone at any time can help you turn your plan into action after finding the music. Knowing that you have weight and that your conversation can be treated as direction drastically impacts team members and allows for you to create meaningful changes within your operation. Scarring People in Positive Ways   "Human interaction improves retention of information."   By running a massive operation responsible for sending a message to guests, Dolf is faced with challenges like balancing entertainment and education, but primarily making a lasting impact on guests. By creating moments for human interaction, guests will feel more connected to the experience and develop a lasting imprint. However, the major challenge of making a lasting impact is the sheer diversity of the audience.   One in every five people read signs. Dolf knows that to cater to a larger audience, there needs to be several ways to send a message to the guests. By giving guests tangible action to take, such as eating one less course of meat every week, guests can see that their actions have an impact, and assists in developing that lasting imprint. The information and connections that are created at experiences like the Toronto Zoo can change the trajectory of lives, and Dolf knows that we need to focus on what will come back with the guest tomorrow if we truly want to make change.  To contact Dolf, you can connect with him on LinkedIn. In this podcast, Anna is with MJ Ray, a lifelong learner stumbling through the journey of humanness. Touched early by suicide and mental illness, "normal" life was never something that felt attainable or interesting.    Around 2016, unrest was spurred by the concept of soon outliving their dad, and the need to build something on their own. Unhappy work situations and the pandemic eventually led to finding the work-from-home world and rang a bell loud and clear. This was the way. Since then it's been a rocky climb to clarity and community by opening up in ways never thought possible before now. Hoping to inspire others in such openness and greater peace of mind, and encourage everyone to ask for help when they need it.    As we celebrate Women's Month, we will hear another inspiring story of MJ Ray. Let's find out how she was able to overcome all the challenges and decided to be creative along the way.    They also talked about:   02:28   How it all started with MJ 05:19   How was she able to deal with the Pandemic  11:44   Advice she can give to the listeners 18:37  Services MJ offers 20:59  What does freedom mean for her      MJ also taught us that we don't need to label ourselves, it's up to us to create and make our choices every single day that will bring healing and joy to our lives.  Quotes:   “Being able to not necessarily give yourself a creative with a C label, but let her you know, capital seat label, but as a creative person, but all of us are creative.”   “It's like, you have to kind of think about your future and how you want to show up differently, and how the version of you that you want to be and who you're becoming would handle this particular situation. And so sometimes when I'm feeling down like now, I think about that like, like, how do I want to show up at this moment.”   “It's been a learning process. Getting my cycles kind of under control, recognizing when I'm kind of transitioning through different periods. And it's just been a few months now, but I feel like it's really been so helpful.”   “Part of the battle is just knowing what is happening in the first place.”   “I think for me, freedom at this point in my life is freedom of choice and freedom of movement. You know, I really, that's kind of my whole thing. And specifically with resumes, too, I'd love to help women who are transitioning in their career, because sometimes we go through periods of our life where maybe we realize this is not what I want to do.”   “We can design our own lives like it is up to us to just make choices every single day to go toward whatever it is that we want. And I feel like the freedom to actually be able to make those choices is what I stand for.” MJ Ray   Check out MJ Ray's social media accounts   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mjismyva/ IG: https://www.instagram.com/mjismyva/  Website: http://www.mjismyva.com   Do you want to be a speaker/guest on my podcast? "A big part of managing my mental health — beyond therapy and meds — is moving my body and spending time outside. I feel my best when on our family camping trips. While some might see these trips as a lot of work, which they are, I find them to be everything I need: connection, fresh air, no Wi-Fi…" Megan Eddinger is a runner and founder and host of the podcast The No BS Mama. She joins Heather to talk about her mental health journey and the ways being self-aware changes us and our relationships for the better. They talk about noticing our "warning signs" -- the perhaps not-so-healthy ways we cope with everyday stress -- and how shifts in our mindset (and prioritizing sleep and making room for the little, meaningful things in life) can help us feel better and improve our overall well-being. Megan Eddinger, who lives in Delaware, is a 35-year-old mom of three who married to her high school sweetheart. She first became a mom just two weeks after her 18th birthday and had her last baby at just 23 years old. Sinikka Waugh and Matt Kieran discuss 5 Realities of a Man's Life and the Positive Ways to Live Life at Full Volume.  Matt grew up on the family farm in Madison County, Iowa where he learned the value of hard work at an early age. He also learned the value of family and of giving back. Throughout his career, he had always sought out positions that allowed him to help people with various needs and issues. From his early days in the fashion industry to the hospitality and event industries, he was always pursuing the solutions to the issues people had. In March of 2020 he found himself, like many, without work not knowing which way to go and how to move forward. Matt searched for new meaning in his life, how would he want to live from this moment on? How would he best serve others while still serving the needs of my family and myself? It was then that he found that he had a true desire to not only help people but to help them change their lives. Being a man that has struggled to find his place in the world Matt found himself wanting to be the man he needed when he was younger. To help men figure out some of the biggest challenges they face such as relationships, children, career, and their view of what success truly is. To help men live with passion and purpose to find their path and to live their values is his mission and his calling. Men in the world need a helping hand to figure out their lives and to push forward in a world that changes each day. Matt hopes to help and guide as many men as possible as we navigate the world together. Today, Matt lives in West Des Moines with his wife of 18 years and their two daughters Olivia and Ella. They enjoy fun family activities such as bike riding, traveling, and donating their time to our parish.

American Lean Weekday: Leadership | Lean Culture & Intrapreneurship | Lean Methods | Industry 4.0 | Case Studies

I'm sure preparing for 2021 is on the minds of many organizations this time of year. Given the strange year it has been, I'm sure we all want to move on from 2020. To prepare these weekly blogs and podcasts, I do a lot of research. Like many things, the impact of working from home depends upon the company culture you already had in place. Here are three ways the pandemic is impacting your company culture. A study by https://www.qualtrics.com/research-center/quartz-qualtrics-study/ (Qualtrics) shared that 37% of 2100 employees who took part in the study felt that company culture had improved. 52% of those asked felt more purposeful in their work since the pandemic started. Another interesting stat is that 68% of the employees want to work remotely some or all of the time after the pandemic. Some key company abilities affected by the pandemic include:  1. AgilityI've mentioned this before. The pandemic has pushed initiatives that were coming in a few years into this current time frame. Digital transformations, the ability for large numbers of the workforce to work from home, different business models. These are all being explored and implemented as quickly as possible. Take the airline industry. They have seen demand for their services drop by as much as 70%. I just read that United Airlines is beginning the first transportation of the COVID-19 vaccine. They are taking advantage of a built-out delivery structure to deliver the vaccine to locations far and wide. 2. InnovationAlong with agility comes innovation. Can you think of new products that have come about because of the pandemic? A visit to Etsy will show you thousands of mask makers. What about masks being integrated into clothes? Athleta, Patagonia, and LL Bean are a few brands I've seen with these options. I'm sure eight months ago, they wouldn't have been in that position. 3. Focus on the CustomerIf the demand for some goods and services is shrinking, you better focus on the customer. I think this is one positive that has come out of the pandemic. In the great times of the last 10 years, when you could ship anything you made to willing customers, companies have had it too easy. Lean is a very customer-centric method and considers the voice of the customer. Hopefully, this small reset makes companies re-evaluate their customer journey and make adjustments where necessary. I believe the companies that support the customer the best will come out on top as we move through these trying times. Customers will remember the companies that performed for them. I hope you've enjoyed learning three ways the pandemic is impacting your company culture. As always, it is an honor to serve you, and I hope that you and your company are getting better every day! http://getpodcast.reviews/id/1499224100 (Rate and Review Here) More show notes are https://americanlean.com/blog/three-ways-the-pandemic-is-impacting-your-company-culture/ (here) https://americanlean.com/contact/ (Schedule a free 1/2 call) with Tom Reed.https://www.amazon.com/dp/1645162818 (Buy) the Lean Game Plan Follow me on https://twitter.com/dailyleancoach (Twitter@dailyleancoach)Join me on https://my.captivate.fm/www.linkedin.com/in/tomreedamericanlean (Linked In)

The United States, as well as several other countries, are isolating right now. This has radically increased online activity. While it has created fear and unpredictability in many people, there are still some positive aspects that we felt it was important to highlight. Churches, in particular, are reeling to find a new identity. Volumes of churches are moving services online, and in this episode we share how this positively affects survivors and others who still long for community but cannot attend church in person. By thinking positive, you just can't help but be optimistic, even when everyone around you is miserable. As a result, you are happier, less depressed, and more satisfied. This week is a special podcast just for my mommas out there - especially the ones with young kiddos - this podcast is for you!   As a mom to a 6 and 8 year old I know (boy do I know!) how challenging it can be to stay patient and calm when my kiddos are pushing every possible button I have.    Not to mention that guilty monkey brain that sneaks up every night where I promise myself, “Tomorrow, I'll yell less. Tomorrow, I'll be more patient. Tomorrow, I'll do better.”   Have you been there?  I'm joined with a special guest In this week's episode of the Heal To Transform podcast...Wendy Bertagnole, parenting expert and author of Taming Tantrums: Simple and Positive Ways to Address Challenging Behavior and host of the Exceptional Parenting Podcast In this episode, you'll discover:  Why time-outs, punishing, and ignoring your child when “they just want attention” may work for the time being, but they also can lead to shame and guilt in your child all the way into adulthood.    Wendy breaks down the three reasons your children may be acting out, and how you can help them through these big emotions without distress and punishment.    What's really going on in your child's brain and how punishment can causes subconscious limiting beliefs and “not good enough” beliefs in your child and in you.    A powerful exercise to help you find more patience, CALM, and stronger connection in your every day parenting.   Learn more about Wendy Bertagnole https://wendybertagnole.com/about/ IG @imperfectmom Exceptional Parenting Podcast Taming Tantrums: Simple and Positive Ways to Address Challenging Behaviors by Wendy Bertagnole

The Christian church from it's earliest times has been opposed to abortion based on Biblical teaching. We believe human life begins in the womb and that this life is sacred. But how can Christians respond in positive and practical ways to the reality of abortion? How can we be truly 'pro-life' rather than only 'anti-abortion'? In this video Kairos host Joshua Pfeiffer sits down with fellow 'Lutherans for Life' members Chelsea Pietsch and Meg Pearce to discuss 10 ways Christians can respond to abortion and build a culture of life in their congregations, families and community. None of us claim to be experts in this area, but simply offer these as suggestions and starting points. Lutherans for Life Australia's website is here - http://www.lutheransforlife.lca.org.au

Solution #10 to help you become even more self-motivated is to: Take Time Out. Just as its important to schedule your days, so you create a good work routine, it's equally important to schedule your “time out” accordingly. Give yourself “me time” when you need it. In fact, many successful leaders of industry block out quality time in their calendar before they schedule any of their appointments. Use your “me time” productively. Go for a brisk walk, get a massage or plan quality “think time”. Solution #8 to help you become even more self-motivated is to: Dress for Success. Adopting a positive, motivating mindset involves not only how you think but how you look. Dress like you mean business! For some people this is a very big deal in order for them to have the highest probability of creating a positive day with successes. Whether they go into an office or work at home, some people have to dress for success every single day. Others can have a motivating mindset and not have to dress like they are doing to an office when they work from home. The mindset is key and how you feel about yourself makes a big difference, so if you have to dress for success (whatever that means for you), do it! Let's start off today by looking at the humble alarm clock. For some people, the sound of the alarm clock is a signal to jump out of bed with a smile on their face, and bounce through the day, full of excitement and enthusiasm about what the next 16 or so hours will hold. On the other hand, there are those who hear the alarm clock through a thick fog of sleep, yawn persistently, stretch a couple of times, and then begrudgingly crawl out of bed with a sense of doom and gloom at what awaits them. What is the defining factor that separates these two individuals? Motivation. Like so many of our character traits, motivation isn't awarded to us as a birth rate. Instead, motivation is a positive, stimulating power source we plug into with our actions and our way of thinking. Self-motivation cannot exist without purpose and often we find it difficult to locate and create the stimulus and passion that drives us to become motivated, alive and ripe with anticipation. So, what can we do to increase our motivation and find the passion that drives us upward and onward? Over the next 11 days we will explore 11 powerful solutions to help you become more self-motivated. 10 Positive Ways to Make Mischief as a Gentle Rebel

The Gentle Rebel Podcast

I really like the word mischief. It's a playful idea with a child-like cheekiness about it, which I think we can learn a lot from. Mischief doesn't carry any maliciousness in its heart, and has no desire to upset or cause harm to anything other than our tendency towards being too serious. When I talk about being a "Gentle Rebel", mischief making definitely resides at the heart of this idea. It's about making the world a little bit better in small ways by being a little mischievous in the way we hold onto our ideas about truth and reality. You could think of it as a way of misbehaving to shake up the norms and expectations of a world that has lost perspective. When norms, assumptions, and expectations become embedded in our daily lives they create culture. This is the unthinking and unconscious mind of the collective group. This isn't innately positive or negative, but it does breed a kind of self-replicating organism. This is why the call of Gandhi to "be the change that you wish to see in the world" is so poignant. Culture is created by the consistent choices we make in our daily lives. Reality is a reflection of the choices we make both as individuals and in the circles that we have impact on moving out from that central point. Creating Culture Gentle rebellion and mischief making are ideas that strike at the heart of what we need in order to change culture for the better. Whether it's at home, in a relationship, in your workplace, or in your neighbourhood/community, and further afield. Starting with ourselves we move to our closest relationships, families, neighbourhoods, workplaces, communities, towns, regions, nations, and so on. If you want to change the world then you need to start small, and you need to make mischief. In this episode of the podcast I get this conversation started and share 10 little ideas for how we can have some fun with counter-cultural ideas that sow seeds for a better future. Speak to Your Neighbours You can learn a lot about people over time, talking about the weather on your way into the house. Treat Colleagues in the Workplace Let those you work with know that you appreciate who they are and what they bring to the team. Anonymous Gifts Plant some seeds for people to pay it forwards by giving non-reciprocal gifts to strangers in your vicinity. Appreciate the Menial Thank those who do the jobs that make your world run seamlessly. Speak Encouragement Say what you appreciate about people, out loud and to them. Don't just think it. Intervene in Gossip Confuse the bitch-fest by throwing in some things you appreciate about the object of the conversation. Smile It's contagious and it can absolutely brighten up someone's day. It might be what they need to see right now. Understand and Appreciate Others Self-awareness is a path to collective-awareness. Learn about and enjoy the differences between us. Think of Others (and tell them you were thinking of them) When someone pops into your head, tell them. You never know, it might be exactly what they need to hear right now. Be Grateful In a world where the answers and solutions are out there if only we had more, or the right thing; gratitude is a sense of inner peace about what we already have. In a world where ambition and growth are pulling us towards ever moving goal posts; gratitude speaks to a contentment with the here and now. In a world where perspective is found, only when we lose what we take for granted (a job, a person, a relationship, a material possession, an aspect of our lifestyle or our health, a season of life); gratitude is mindful and appreciative of the fleeting nature of all things and the fact that nothing lasts forever. Let's go and make some mischief! Over to You I would love to hear your mischief making ideas. Please share them in the comments below. What positive mischief do you enjoy adding to the world?

Do you know people who don't seem to see the role they play in creating their own problems? People where it seems so obvious to you why they are not making breakthroughs in the areas of life they seem obsessed about changing? We all have blind spots. It's so much easier to see these kinds of truths for other people than it is to see and acknowledge them for ourselves. It's why coaches need coaches, doctors need doctors, councillors need councillors, and mentors need mentors. Not even the wisest guru in the world can be self-aware enough for perfection. And that's no bad thing. As introverts and highly sensitive people, it's important to see ourselves from the perspective of others. To empathise with people who experience who and how we are. This is the starting point of self-awareness. It's how we can position mirrors on our lives so that we can see how our behaviours might contribute to the problems we want to solve. Then, rather than finding other things to blame, we have a clearer view of what is truly needed in order to create a healthier future. In this episode of the podcast we look at how blind spots can become gaping chasms if we leave them to their own devices. And how we can use the gifts of sensitivity and introversion to see those hard to view parts of ourselves reflected back when we take the time to truly do so. Shaking a Mindset A question that I've seen come up in a number of forums lately is "how can I get (person) to like me?" Alongside "does anyone else intuitively 'just know' when someone doesn't like you?" It feels like there are elements of social regression taking place, especially when I read the responses to these kinds of questions in comment sections. "Just ignore those people...they're not worth your energy...people who don't appreciate you for you are just selfish narcissists" and so on. You've probably seen similar stuff. These are responses that conform to an ever-growing idea that saturates our (in)ability to transcend our differences and rub along together on this little planet of ours. The idea that a person's value as a human is based on whether you like them, or whether or not they like you. Whether you like it or not, you have to spend your short time on this earth rubbing along with people who you don't like. And, shock horror, people who won't see eye to eye with you. That's OK. It has to be. Because it's true. There is NOTHING you can do to make someone like you. You're not entitled to anyone else's affections or attention. However, you might experience some interesting results once you shift your focus from you to them. Once you change the question from "how can I get them to like me?" to "how can I make them feel good about themselves?" How can we use our encounters with other people to better view our blind spots? How might we build a positive and healthy self-awareness that helps us grow deeper into who we are? That's what we are looking at in this week's episode. Over to You Do you seek to become aware of your blind spots? How? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this topic, please share your response and ideas in the comments below.
