“a combination of events” [3STU]  Keeping track of everything going on in the Sherlockian world is no easy task. And yet, every year without fail, Ross Davies, BSI ("The Temple") oversees a team at The Baker Street Almanac that does exactly that. We first spoke to Ross about the enterprise on , but this time our conversation less about the mechanics and features than it is about some of the worthwhile items of note for Sherlockians in 2024. Ross chooses his top items and neatly divides things into categories: events, societies, publishing, and media. Burt and Scott add in a few points of interest as well. We also have Madeline Quiñones' latest installment of "A Chance of Listening," her review of Sherlockian podcasts. And wind up the year with another Canonical Couplet quiz for you to test your Sherlockian knowledge. The winner, chosen at random from all correct answers, will receive something from the IHOSE vaults. Send your answer to comment @ ihearofsherlock .com by January 14, 2025 at 11:59 a.m. EST. In this episode, we had a chance to talk with Glen about This Work of Storytelling: Arthur Conan Doyle's speech to the Authors' Club, London, June 29, 1896, published by Wessex Press. The book consists of a facsimile manuscript of the speech, together with other letters and documents, essays, and commentary from a variety of Sherlockians. Along the way, a mystery is solved and we have the added pleasure of the writing of Cathy Miranker, Glen's wife and co-conspirator in this and the traveling exhibition of 221 objects from his collection. How to Find a Work-Life Balance When You Hate Your Job: Work, Life, Balance Lesson #4

This Work, Life, Balance Lesson is all about finding a balance between work and everything else in life when you hate your job.   Now, hate is a strong word, which I don't use lightly. In this case, it's a direct quote from people I've interviewed on this podcast who have talked about this exact thing. And it's right that it's a strong word because when you don't like the work you do, it has an incredibly strong impact.   A person's job is often the benchmark against which people measure their value and identity, as well as being a means to pay the bills and put food on the table. Regardless of the number of hours spent working, feeling like you hate your job will inevitably impact your sense of balance detrimentally.   In this episode, “hating your job” is categorised into three depths of feeling: 1. Rock bottom: a whole hearted hatred, which likely leads to a crisis point. 2. A mid-depth where you might hate aspects of your job, or your chosen career, but not all of it. 3. A shallow level of hatred, perhaps better termed as “not loving your job”. Here, you may feel uninspired or excited by your work, but you recognise the limits of its value to you, and other aspects of life compliment the job to make it more tolerable. Throughout the episode I share some examples that have featured on the podcast that relate to each of those levels of “depth” of hating your job, and share some of the actions that have helped people regain their balance in those situations. Usually, after recording a podcast episode, Ranell and I would quickly say goodbye to our guests so we could get on with Saturday afternoon activities. We stayed in the Zoom room for over an hour when we recorded our episode with Jennifer Crystal Chien. When listening back, I realized the richness of the conversation. Jennifer has a unique theory of change regarding correcting systemic wrongs and harms that BIPOCs and true coconspirators in the documentary community experience.  While Ranell and I loved our work at the IDA, it was consistently hampered by a work culture rooted in white supremacy, patriarchy, and anti-blackness. The demands of white male filmmakers and white female co-workers were centered on policy implementation and day-to-day operations. Post-traumatic Non-Profit Syndrome is real, and I, like many in similar organizations, became “the problematic Woman of Color.” For more on this, check out the graphic on the COCo (the Centre for Community Organizations) website created by Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence. Thembe Bhebe of the European Film Mart and the Carribean Fim Academy introduced me to Jemma Desai's work “This Work isn't for Us” in 2020. It was her writing, along with the list of demands from the former and current BIPOC employees of  BIPOC at the Columbia Film Society, theatre artists, as well as the mentorship, community of support of ArtEquity, Somatic Abolition practices, and my therapist, that helped me to find come to come to terms my experiences, find my voice and create the change I needed. I hope this episode will give BIPOCs and white coconspirators committed to anti-racism the strength to advocate for themselves and the filmmakers they serve. The following discussion between myself, Jennifer, and Ranell also planted the seed for the panel Ranell planned and moderated at the International Documentary Association's Getting Real 2022, entitled Collateral Damage and Institutional Repair which featured Sarah-Tai Black (Critic, Programmer, and Curator), Jemma Desai (Creator of “This Work Isn't For Us”), Cintia Gil (Programmer), Lalita Krishna (Producer/Director), and Rachel Pronger (Curator and Producer). In the spirit of discernment and mental health, the song for this episode is Kenny Rogers' “The Gambler.” In the documentary non-profit space, you need to know when to hold them, when to fold them, when to walk away, and when to run. If you liked this special episode, please share it with a friend dealing with Post Traumatic Non-Profit Syndrome. If you have any resources you'd like me to add to this page, please email the link.

BILL YATES:  Oh, yes.  It's got to be. WENDY GROUNDS:  It's got to be better.  We like to talk with experts who are doing new and exciting things in the world of project management.  And that brings us to today's guests.  Dr. Karen Thompson is a senior academic at Bournemouth University Business School in the U.K.  She's a project professional turned innovative educator.who has done a lot of research and education in managing projects sustainably. And we have Dr. Nigel Williams, the Reader in Project Management and research lead at the University of Portsmouth.  Karen and Nigel co-lead the Responsible Project Management Initiative, which is aimed to encourage sustainability and social responsibility in an ethical manner by project managers. BILL YATES:  Yeah, sustainability is a topic that we've hit on a few times.  And I know just recently we interviewed Scott Berkun, and we focused on his book, “How Design Makes the World.”  Berkun talked about four questions in that book, and the fourth question:  Who might be hurt by your work, now or in the future?  This conversation that we're going to have today just goes right in line with that.  I think some projects produce amazing things, could be a product or a service.  But we don't really think about the fallout. We had conversations with Henk about the ocean cleanup project; right?  Episode 106.  Orbital space debris.  We talked with Dr. Heather about that problem in Episode 75.  We all want our cell phones to work.  We want to have GPS.  But what happens when the satellite dies? Sustainability is something that we're passionate about.  This kind of takes it to another level.  It's challenging to me as a project manager to think about, okay, in my day-to-day work, how can I be considering these questions?  So I'm excited about this conversation. WENDY GROUNDS: Not so long ago we spoke to Kaitlyn Bunker about the Islands Energy Program.  And that was also an incredible program where they're really thinking about what is the good that we are bringing in our projects. And with that, let's get talking to Karen and Nigel. The History of Responsible Project Management Karen, could you tell us a little bit about the history of Responsible Project Management, how you started it? KAREN THOMPSON:  Yes, certainly.  Well, how it started was way back in 2017 I'd just finished my Ph.D.  And one of the things that I uncovered while doing that were all the claims that project management research – there were criticisms around it not being relevant enough to practice.  So in 2017 I held a sort of networking event where ...

If you're not familiar with this atrocity, let me quote Deb Chachra's chilling telling of the event:  On December 6, 1989, in late afternoon a man had walked into the École Polytechnique, the engineering school of the University of Montreal, carrying a hunting rifle, ammunition, and a knife. He entered a mechanical engineering class of about sixty students, separated out the nine women, and told them, "I am fighting feminism." One of the women, Nathalie Provost, responded, "Look, we are just women studying engineering, not necessarily feminists ready to march on the streets to shout we are against men, just students intent on leading a normal life." She reports that his response was, "You're women, you're going to be engineers. You're all a bunch of feminists. I hate feminists."He then opened fire on the women, killing six of them. Then he went from floor to floor in the building, targeting and shooting women.Fourteen women were killed that day, twelve of them engineering students, one a nursing student, and one a university employee. Here are their names: Anne St-Arneault, Geneviève Bergeron, Hélène Colgan, Nathalie Crotea, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Barbara Klueznick, Maryse Laganière, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Michèle Richard, and Annie Turcotte. (Me: You can hear more about these women here.)An additional thirteen people were injured. Nathalie Provost was shot four times, but survived. In the weeks, months, and years that followed, among other responses, Canada implemented stricter gun-control regulations, and began to observe December 6th as a National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. The event remains the worst mass murder in Canadian history. Our industry has problems with sexism, whether latent or outright. While we hope never to have another atrocity like this one; we should strive for equality and justice in our industry. As a white dude in tech, I'll do everything I can; and I ask you to do the same. If you've never had to fear for your life just because you wanted to be an engineer, then you too need to stand up and help stop the sexism in our industry. Now, on to what happened last week in the world of .NET.

Relationships! Let's Talk About It with Pripo Teplitsky

It is a heavy time in America. Viruses are taking the nation by storm - and not just the ones that cause disease. I was young when the Detroit riots in 1967 broke out. Some 50 years later, we still have the same issues: African-Americans are still being oppressed and assaulted by police. Racism is a prevalent issue that all of us need to discuss and resolve. We need to step up our game in addressing the racial prejudice deeply ingrained and institutionalized in our society.   For white people, a part of that means confronting what it means to be white, a question Mana Vermeulen-McLeod is dedicated to answering. Mana is a natural builder, social activist, and life coach. Born in Holland, Mana is a generational European-American who came to the U.S. about 15 years ago. She is committed to confronting her whiteness through education and understanding profound questions about the privileges that come with being a white woman.   In this episode, which was recorded many months ago, Mana and I discuss witnessing our whiteness, white privilege, and how we should tackle racism as white people. We describe how racism is institutionalized in our society and share our experiences with racism and diversity. We underscore the need to teach children about racial prejudice and explain how racism is not going to die on its own. We also discuss how books can help us learn more about racism and prejudice and highlight how we can support each other in unlearning racism.   “We need to think of that deep healing: how are we going to own what our forefathers did? That’s a huge piece nobody wants to do.” - Mana Vermeulen-McLeod   This week on Relationships! Let’s Talk About It:  The Racism 101 class that sparked Mana’s interest in issues about race relations Looking at racism from the perspective of what it means to be white Our experiences growing up with racism and diversity How we all live in a racist society and the institutionalization of racism How white people can tackle racial prejudice by looking into themselves Book recommendations on unlearning racism and prejudice How books can help us learn about racism and white privilege Mana’s experiences growing up in a segregated environment What colorism or shadism is and a controversial Dutch cultural heritage Why we need to talk to children about racism Why we need to step up our game when it comes to racism and diversity Looking at history and ancestry to address racial prejudice Supporting each other in unlearning internalized racism     Related Content:  Women Working in Male-Dominated Workplaces Understanding Racism: Relationships are at the Heart of This Work   Resources Mentioned:  Witnessing Whiteness: The Need to Talk About Racism and How to Do It by Shelly Tochluk White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism by Robin DiAngelo White Awake Me and White Supremacy Workbook by Layla Saad   Connect with Mana Vermeulen-McLeod: Earthaven Ecovillage The Work that Reconnects Southeast Wise Women’s Herbal Conference Culture’s Edge Mana Vermeulen-McLeod on Facebook   Let’s Talk About It! Counseling and connecting with people for over 30 years, Connie Burns is a body-centered psychotherapist who specializes in body and trauma therapies. She has a passion for teaching people how to reconnect with their relationships - relationships with their own bodies, other people, and the natural world. Connie was urged to act on her strong convictions about the current division and conflict happening in western culture as well as the imminent threat of climate change.   Connie joins me today to share the different ways that we are connected to the natural world and how this crucial connection affects us. We dive deep into how our culture has lost that meaningful sense of connection to who we are, how society is disconnected from the natural world, and the challenges it poses on our relationships with others. We also discuss the incredible benefits of being connected to ourselves, to others, and to the natural world as well as how it can take our relationships to a deeper and more authentic level.   “The sacred sons of omnipresent love - we don’t have access to that when we don’t have access to our bodies, and that’s tragic.” - Connie Burns   This week on Relationships! Let’s Talk About It:   How people are disconnected from their bodies. Why anger is the emotion that women are most disconnected from. Why getting cut off from anger is detrimental. What makes people more vulnerable to predation. The connection between being disconnected from our bodies and the rampant abuse in women and children. How being disconnected from our bodies encourages genocidal thoughts and behaviors in our culture How today’s western culture conditions people toward happiness, but not joy, satisfaction, or connection. How to access your body in a healthy way. Leveraging the awe and calm that nature brings to help resolve and repair marital conflicts. The connection between nature and human beings. How to be more accepting of who you are by observing the relationships of the natural world. The value of diversity and how to cultivate it. How retreats and body massages allow you to reconnect with your body and with others. The difference between pleasurable sex and divine sexual intimacy.     Resources Mentioned:   Understanding Racism: Relationships are at the Heart of This Work    Let’s Talk About It!   Thanks for tuning into this week’s episode of Relationships!
