Eight days after the shambolic Live Aid reunion Jimmy Page joined Robert Plant onstage at the Brendan Byrne Arena, in East Rutherford, NJ. The contrast between the two gigs couldn't be greater. Robert's voice is virtually perfect and Jimmy's guitar (and Jimmy himself) are in tune. I play an aching beautiful Young Boy Blues from his then current Honeydrippers EP, and then I play the two encores Jimmy played with the band; the first being a standard blues number (I don't know if it has a name), and then a fiery run through of Treat Her Right, which calls back to when they jammed the same tune two years earlier. This is a great performance and a shining testimony to the viability of a Page/Plant collaboration even back then, when they sniped at each other in the press.

This is a good one. Robert Plant is in amazing voice with lots of oomph. Richie Hayward (from Little Feat) is killing it on drums, Robbie Blunt is a bloody virtuoso with his emotive playing. This is December 13, 1983 at the Hammersmith Odeon, on his Principle of Moments tour. Jimmy Page had four days prior finished up with the ARMS Tour, and was aflame with renewed enthusiasm for his musical future. The energy and fun the pair are having is evident. Jimmy is playing his typical 1983/84 b-bender solo but with some crunch instead of chorus. It's an amazing moment in time. These guys did not typically get along in the 1980's. I play an incendiary Burning Down One Side, and emotive and evocative Big Log, and the showstopper, Treat Her Right with Jimmy Page. What a night.
In our episode with Wisconsin-born, New England based Jeffrey Foucault, we had a handful of questions for the singer-songwriter about his background: coffee, the midwest and Mark Twain wisdom. Then we talked about Billy Conway for more than an hour. Conway was Foucault's long-time partner in music, drummer and best friend who died from cancer in 2021. He was a rock and roll roots legend in Boston with his tenure in Morphine and Treat Her Right. He was like a holy man, known for his creative, curious and infectious spirit where even people who met him only one time (myself included) were quite taken and inspired by his presence. The loss of Billy Conway hit the music community hard. In 2023, a tribute album showcasing the songwriting of Conway recorded by some of his closest friends (Chris Smither, Foucault, Kris Delmhorst, Billy's wife Laurie Sargent) was released. And now, with his latest album release, Jeff's given us a working wake for his friend Billy, The Universal Fire.We talked about what was going on with Jeff when he met and started working with Billy in 2013. What state of mind made this spectacular friendship and collaboration completely click. How conscious Jeff has been about his reaction to Conway's death and processing grief when it comes to being an example for his teenage daughter (who is also getting into folk music and live performance- hi Hazel!). We also dig into the new album, The Universal Fire. He paralleled the loss of Billy Conway with a different type of loss: the 2008 fire at the Universal Studios lot in California that destroyed master tapes of hugely influential American recordings. And finally, a check in on how Jeffrey's humanness is faring in the high-tech world in the year 2024.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Interested in sponsoring us? In this bonus episode (which is really an addendum to Season 1 Episode 6, featuring Zachary Lazar's rock novel ‘Sway', a story that brings together the early Rolling Stones, the films of avant-garde filmmaker Kenneth Anger, and members of the Manson Family in a fictional setting) Scott Michaels joins me to talk about Sharon Tate and the Manson Murders and what it was like working with Quentin Tarantino on his film ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'. Scott Michaels is Hollywood's original authority on celebrity deaths, including the Manson Murders, and a former tour guide for LA's now-defunct Dearly Departed Tours. Quentin Tarantino hired Scott to be a consultant on ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood', which reimagines the murders of Sharon Tate, Voytek Frykowski, Jay Sebring, and Abigail Folger at the hands of the Manson Family in early August 1969. This past April, Scott gave me a once-in-a-lifetime, one-on-one, all-day tour of major Manson Family points of interest in Los Angeles and the surrounding area, which we talk about in this bonus episode. We also talk about common misconceptions about the murders, Scott's experience working with Quentin Tarantino on ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood', Scott's favorite nonfiction books about the murders, people related to the case he's known, and little-known tidbits about the murders, like what book Abigail Folger was reading when she was killed. So, cue up The Beatles' ‘White Album', slip into your favorite retro threads, kick back and join Scott Michaels and me as we time travel back to 1969 Southern California to revisit the true crime that brought an end to the free lovin' groovy ‘60s. Afterward, I invite you to check out Season 1 Episode 6 to hear my conversation with Zachary Lazar about his novel ‘Sway' and Tony Sokol's thoughts on the Stones and the occult and Zeena Schreck's memories of her godfather Kenneth Anger. *Listen to the episode, then watch the condensed video version of my interview with Scott Michaels. Ephesians 5:25-32New King James Version 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might [a]sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. 28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. 30 For we are members of His body, [b]of His flesh and of His bones. 31 “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
***WE DO NOT OWN THE RIGHTS TO ANY MUSIC*** Welcome Black!!! Its been too long but we are back from our hiatus and this week we link up and have a session to make up for missed time. We kick off the conversation offering our opinions on the unsend message update from apple but then move directly into the topics. The first topic of this episode is about being the first guy to treat a girl right. Is it good or bad? and what does it look like? This conversation rolls right into the next topic about actively pursuing big girls as being a sign of brokenness. Then Google creates an robot that becomes sentient which causes a debate on whether or not robots can have a soul. We wrap the show up on the Roe V. Wade ruling being overturned recently but there is sooo much more so tune in and tell us what you think.

开场曲:(Roy Head/The Traits); 结束曲:
Book Vs Movie The Commitments The First of Roddy Doyle’s “The Barrytown” Trilogy Starts Off on a Rockin’ Beat How much soul do you have? You may be filling to the brim with it after this latest episode of Book Vs. Movie talking about the 1987 Roddy Doyle novel, The Commitments and the 1991 Alan Parker-directed film which brought soul music back on the charts in the early 90s. Not everyone knows that The Commitments is a part of a series of books set in the 1980s/1990s in Dublin, Ireland. This particular story is about a group of young adults who form a band to brighten their dreary lives in “The Barrytown.” (After this, Doyle wrote The Snapper and The Van as part of the trilogy.) The Margos go into the background of Doyle who is one of Ireland’s most successful and celebrated authors. Then they talk about the well-received movie featuring a cast on unknown actors and a soundtrack that become an early 90s staple at parties. So between the novel and the movie--which did we like better? Click the link at the bottom to find out. In this ep the Margos discuss: Roddy Doyle’s literary achievements The cast of The Commitments including Robert Arkins (Jimmy Rabbitte,) Angeline Ball (Imelda Quirke,) Michael Aherne (Steven Clifford,) Maria Doyle Kennedy (Natalie Murphy,) Bronagh Gallagher (Bernie McGloughlin,) Glen Hansard (Outspan Foster,) Johnny Murphy (Joey “The Lips” Fagan,) Andrew Strong (Deco Cuffe,) and Colm Meany (Mr. Rabbitte.) This time around we bring it back to basics with the ladies and the lad behind the board and knock around some topics that come to mind. We tease a bit of our upcoming secret bonus episode and debate the ethics of Tinder, the ocean being a thing, and why Paige is so secretive about her comedy career that's taking off.
