On today’s episode of The Real Estate Podcast, Jimmy is joined in the studio by Berkshire Hathaway real estate agent Brad Reese to uncover how he increased his sales volume growth from $3 million to $30 million, all within one year! Brad’s beginnings in real estate When Brad first started selling in 2016, his days revolved around cold calls from a white page account. With these people, he focused not on a sale but on learning about them and their stories. While this was great for relationship-building, it didn’t necessarily translate to direct sales; his career didn’t take off until he joined Berkshire Hathaway. The importance of marketing As the real estate market shifted, Brad was prepared thanks to his database of relationships within his market. Online leads are expensive. Advertising is expensive. Especially when you don’t have a lot of money, marketing can seem like a gamble. But while marketing might seem risky, strategic implementation and consistent strategy find long-term success. Remember, you don’t see results right away. It’s a long-term play, and you don’t reap the rewards unless you keep consistent and stick with a plan. Database management: How did he stay in contact with clients? Brad classifies people by their timeline and motivation level. It’s not about trying to make a sale but arming people with the proper knowledge to navigate the market. Because Brad now researches and understands the real estate market, he shares updates and information with his clients. He also makes it a point to invest in relationships with other agents, both in and outside Berkshire Hathaway. It’s not just about asking these agents about available spaces and opportunities; it’s about being a reciprocal resource for them as well. What is Brad excited about in real estate now? He’s thrilled about the trajectory of his business. He’s made friends out of his clients, and he enjoys being a contributing member of his community and helping people’s dreams come true. After four years of talking about the aggregation of marginal gains and the idea of getting 1% better, ChooseFI has accumulated quite a lengthy list you can stack together. If you can invest a little bit of time to fix something, you’ll never have to invest that time again. Brad recently decided to move away from paper files and bills to join the digital age, while Jonathan has been using a subscription service to stop the paper junk mail sent to him. Chris Hutchins shared a final hack with Brad after the end of the last episode that didn’t make it into the recording. Chris uses a browser extension to view book availability at his local library and borrow or place a hold on it. Brad and Jonathan selectively pick from the list of 100 ways to get 1% better with your finances, starting with #3, Reading (or Listening) to One New Finance or Investing Book Each Month. Jonathan thinks this tip could be expanded to include non-fiction books that improve you in some way. #4 on the list is to learn a new skill. It could be for obtaining background knowledge, gaining a marketable skill, or simply for interest’s sake. Although complacency can be seen as a bad thing, don’t mistake complacency for contentment. Other tips include getting outside to exercise or try a new hiking or biking trail every week. Mix things up. There is a never-ending stream of free YouTube exercise classes to choose from. Are you aware of your local FI group? While COVID has kept us physically apart, we are coming to the other end. You can invest in your local community. As for dealing with debt, Brad says you need to sit down and be honest with yourself. Understand what you owe, who you owe it to, how much you make each month, and how much you spend. If you spend more than you make, you need to stop right now, and at least get to the point where you aren’t adding more debt. Once you get to that place, Jonathan says you can look for ways to optimize your debt payoff, such as zero balance transfers. And then work to improve your credit score by putting a system in place, like autopay, to ensure you never miss a payment. If you do not have $1,000, you don’t need an emergency fund, you need a crisis fund. You need $1,000 that doesn’t have a bill attached to it that you could draw on in a crisis. Once you have that, then you can think about building an emergency fund. Use your tax refund to establish your crisis fund. Next, don’t give the government an interest-free loan and work it so that you don’t get a tax refund. The opportunity cost of having the government hold your money for a year is potentially big. When financially responsible and on the path to FI, you don’t want a big refund. You want to be saving and investing it all year long. You can learn to do just about anything on YouTube, especially do-it-yourself home repair tutorials that will save you money. Even replacing your incandescent bulbs with LED is easy to do and saves on energy costs. While lowering your hot water heater temperatures and adjusting the thermostat won’t make you wealthy overnight, stacking these tips with others is the whole point of getting 1% better. Declutter your home and donate or sell items to simplify your life. Owning a car costs a lot. Trying to manage the payment for a new car every 5 years versus buying a car and driving it for 15 years can have a dramatic impact on your path to FI. The one decision to drive a new car for 15 years, made just three times over an adult’s lifetime can result in a $742,000 difference. If you can stack car ownership savings with other money savings hacks on food, or housing, it can mean a difference of multiple millions. It doesn’t need to be about deprivation but just doing a little better than average to end up with millions more than your counterpart who is drifting through their financial life. #33 on the list is to shop your car insurance every year, which Brad extends as something to be done with all your insurance policies. Make it a yearly “to do” task. Unfortunately, companies don’t incentivize customers to stay, they incentivize customers to leave other companies to come to them. Even if you don’t want to switch, at least try and negotiate a better price. There are even companies who will do this for you. There are a few ways to optimize healthcare, such as using a high-deductible health care plan with an HSA, prescription discount tools, and locking in medical service prices with websites, such as MDSave. The health benefits of focusing on exercise and healthy food choices can not be overstated. 80-90% of the treatment modalities would go so much further if stacked with a healthy diet and lifestyle. To keep food costs in check, Brad and his wife, Laura, try to anchor themselves to a $2 per person per meal goal. Laura has even curated a series of healthy recipes that fall within that cost. Everything is negotiable. When Brad had a recent medical procedure, he simply asked if there was a pay-in-full discount and received a 30% discount. Saving puts money in your pocket, and so does earning more money. There’s never been a better time for a side hustle. CampFI’s are back! When Brad and Nate launched this podcast a year ago, they were looking forward to sharing their picks for March Madness. Then the pandemic hit and we all missed out on one of the greatest times on the sports calendar. So to say the guys are happy that the tournament is back would be an understatement. For today’s picks, the guys tip off the tournament with Colgate and Arkansas along with Cleveland State and Houston. The Fade Five then rolls on with Purdue and North Texas and we wrap things up with Wisconsin/North Carolina and Winthrop/Villanova. Here’s hoping your bracket isn’t trash by dinner time!
When Brad and Taryn got married a couple weeks ago he totally surprised her with a ring that belonged to her Grandma!
Today Brad Kellogg is the Director of Consulting Services at Houston Methodist Global Healthcare, and he opens up on how his career journey has involved plenty of risks, a lot of change, and a humble reliance on God. Early in life, Brad learned about the ups and downs that can come with working. His family ran a car rental franchise, but the business went bankrupt in the 1980s. And as a kid, Brad started a successful lawn care company with a friend, and also experienced some challenging issues at church that made him come to his own faith. As Brad entered university, he had a desire to work as an engineer internationally after an internship in East Africa. When Brad graduated, he found a full-time engineering position with Schlumberger, a publicly traded oilfield services company. But entered the workforce when oil prices dropped to historical lows, so he experienced job uncertainty during his first months relocating to Texas. While Brad was able to keep his job and move up the corporate ladder, he and his wife Amy would have to transfer to Abu Dhabi and then to Venezuela. That’s when Brad felt like he was a cog in a big machine, and eventually took a large pay cut to shift industries from oil to healthcare. He started as a biomedical engineer and worked his way up to COO of a well-known hospital, Oasis Hospital now Kanad Hospital in the United Arab Emirates. Brad’s learned to hold things loosely and trust that whatever’s next is ultimately part of God’s plan for his life. You’ll hear more about it on this episode of Faith Collides. Brad Hemmings’ father is Jamaican. His mother Trinidadian. Both islands are rich in culture and history. Jamaica has gifted to the world reggae music, while Trinidad and Tobago has gifted the steel drum, Calypso and Soca music. It is with this portent blend of music, food, knowledge and vibe that Brad Hemmings was raised. Brad grew up being influenced by and understanding the beauty of Caribbean music. He saw how Caribbean music could affect and change the world. When Brad was a teenager, he moved to South Florida. While South Florida may have had a similar temperature, the Caribbean it was not. Brad, was forced to adjust to many things that he was not used to. However, he was introduced to facets of American culture that would aid in his development. He recalls getting a full and true understanding of hip hop and being able to truly identify the relationship between it and the music of the Caribbean.Brad knew that a career in music was in his future. Growing up in a musical family and around one of Jamaica's premier stage in lighting technicians, he quickly learned the business and formed relationships at all levels. Unbeknownst to him at the time, those relationships would usher him into what would become one of the most successful companies to represent Caribbean artists globally. Brad’s company, Caribbean Entertainment, has booked and represented some of the top artists in the world. In addition, he has been the catalyst to getting artists into countries on every inhabited continent. Caribbean Entertainment is also the company that introduced China to its first Soca concert. With a who's who of artists on his roster, Brad can book you virtually any top Caribbean artist at virtually any venue in the world. Brad has also done the reverse, bringing some of the United States’ top acts into the Caribbean. Now Brad and his team are adding to their already stellar accomplishments. They have now embarked on artist management, starting with global Soca sensation Mr. Killa. But like any ambitious Caribbean entrepreneur, Brad Hemmings is not done yet. This is the story ... Thus far ... Of Brad Hemmings.
Galileo Mining is a resources company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) under the code GAL and is exploring for base metals in south-east Western Australia. Since our first Coffee with Samso in May, Galileo has been very active in preparing for this moment of drilling targets. We speak of the "Truth Machine" being what all projects need or fear. In this case, I do believe that this will bring exciting times for shareholders. Brad Underwood has been preparing these projects with desktop surveys, geochemistry and geophysics. The obvious next step is to drill the targets identified. Brad tells us that there will be coming news for the next 6 months. Brad tells us about how the geophysics is clean, meaning that the country rocks are not compromising the results. Since preparing for the first Coffee with Samso with Brad, I have come to appreciate how unique this area is compared to your normal nickel project. When Brad talked about the unique metal composition, more copper, I think there are more discoveries left in the Fraser Range. I hope you find it an interesting object lesson in nickel exploration and its investment potential.

Many of you know, I’m big into alternative education options. We personally homeschool our three children, but I know that’s not the best option for every family. The good news is, there are so many options when it comes to our children’s education—what works for one child might not work for another, and that’s okay. Options do exist. We don’t often hear about all of our options, but today we’re going to shift that with our guest Austin Rees. She is here to share her family’s alternative education journey with us. Have you ever heard of self-directed education? Or Sudbury schools? Or a democratic school? I thought I knew a little about the self-directed part, but Austin’s story really opened my eyes to a whole new approach that I can see working really well for a lot of kids. This episode is going to stretch your mind, heart, and imagination. It shifted my already alternative view of education. Austin Rees is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and Licensed Massage therapist who specializes in infant craniosacral therapy. She is also the creator of Nourish & Align. One of Austin’s favorite past times is facilitating introspective and integral retreats for women and birth professionals. She is a mother to four children: Bella 16, Declan 14, Henry 12, and Maggie 6, and is married to her college sweetheart, Brad. She and Brad both decided early in their parenting journey to educate their children at home. After homeschooling with various curriculums they began researching self-directed education and the Sudbury school model. When Brad retired from the military in 2015, they chose to move to Baltimore, Maryland. They picked that city because it was close to the Sudbury School, Arts & Ideas. So after 7 years of homeschooling, they enrolled them in a democratic school based in self-directed education where they have all been thriving ever since. Austin & Brad’s commitment to their children’s education is inspiring. But that’s only one of the many take-aways from this episode. I’m really stuck on the “stop, pause, & care” notion she mentions part way though. I’d love to hear what your takeaways are from today’s show. So after the episode, hop over to my Instagram @loribethauldridge or the website www.elevatingmotherhood.com to share your thoughts on this type of education. Amy from Spanaway has written in to Fitz for help because she thinks her boyfriend Brad is extremely over the top about Christmas. Today is Halloween and she says their house is already decorated for Christmas, and not just decorated, but totally lit up Clark Griswold style. Not just outside, but also inside every room, garage and everything. Amy says she doesn’t hate Christmas or decorations – they are fun – but it’s the amount and how early in the year it is, when kids are coming to trick or treat, it’s embarrassing. Amy does offer that she is an atheist and wonders if Brad is trying to kind of throw that in her face. When Brad comes on, he is absolutely 100% about Christmas. He says it lifts his spirits and thinks others feel the same. And he even admits to the Griswold comparison because his parents loved “Christmas Vacation” and bought all the lights. Amy feels like we do not understand the enormity of his obsession, and Brad feels like she is missing out on something major in life. The P1’s are interestingly divided on this one – this couple may have deeper issues.
Sellers get knocked down plenty of times, but sometimes failure is the greatest sales lesson. Brad McDonald works with Sandler Systems which has 250 franchises around the world that help businesses grow by improving their sales processes. Failure Brad's 28-year career in the U.S. Navy taught him that failure could mean the difference between life and death. When he transitioned from the Navy to the sales world, he realized that many of his attempts were going to end in failure. He had to change the paradigm. The things he perceived were failures — having people hang up on him or cancel an appointment — weren't really failures. Along the way, he learned to embrace failure. Gumballs You must make a lot of sales calls in order to get to yes. On the other hand, if we see the sales calls that ended in “no” as a failure, that will feel bad. Brad uses a gumball analogy to explain it. If you want a green gumball from a gumball machine, and there are multiple colors inside, there's a good chance you won't get a green one. When you put the quarter inside, there's a good chance you'll get a different color. Imagine you're making prospecting phone calls, or cold calls; the most dreaded form of prospecting. If you make 10, 20, or 30 calls, you'll eventually get someone who wants to talk, just like you'll eventually get a green gumball. You'll also likely get an orange gumball which might represent a buyer who wants to talk more to see if there's interest. If you view every orange gumball as a failure, you won't be very likely to keep going while you wait for the green ones. If, on the other hand, you understand that you have to get the orange gumball out of the way in order to get to the green one, you can embrace it. Process of failure Brad came from a culture where sailors did what he told them to do and they didn't say no. He was surprised to find in the sales world that prospects aren't always honest and they don't always respect his time. And they certainly don't feel compelled to follow his orders. Initially, all those things felt like failures. Failure mimics the stages of grief which are disbelief, fear, despair, anger, and acceptance. Brad refers to the “ok, not ok principle.” He came to believe that he needed to be ok being not ok. He needed to not seek to meet his emotional needs in a sales call. Many sellers get emotionally involved in their sales calls and that's one of the five big conceptual roadblocks in sales. Head trash gets in the way. We get excited when we're about to make a sale and we stop doing the things we need to do. Sales activities Brad learned along the way that his focus on outcomes and results was wrong. He was excited when he made sales and dejected when he wasn't. He discovered over time that focusing on things he could control, like activities, made more sense. He started doing the things he knew would make him more successful and he tracked those things. Brad focused on his tonality, his demeanor, his body language and other things that were well within his control. Conceptual issues Brad believes that all sales problems come in one or two categories. Tactical. What do I say, When do I say it? How do I say it? Conceptual. Relating to the beliefs we have between our ears. Most tactical problems have a conceptual basis. In Brad's case, he came out of the Navy where he didn't fear much of anything into a setting where he was afraid to make a cold call. The fear was a result of the beliefs he held about sales. The conceptual issues are these: The need for approval. The problem occurs when you want to be liked more than you want to make sales. The BUY cycle. How do you buy things? How do I treat salespeople when someone is trying to sell something to me? We tend to sell the same way we buy. If you tend to comparison shop, you'll be more forgiving of buyers who do the same. Negative scripts. Many of these originate in childhood. Examples are the idea that you shouldn't openly talk about money. Also, very few of us were raised by parents who hoped we would grow up to be successful sellers. Emotional involvement in the sales process. It's ok to have a love for your prospects, but you must also have the mindset that you don't need anyone. Instead, find something that's mutually beneficial. Money concept. Your very first memory of money seems to have a relationship to how you feel about money now. When Brad made his first big commission check, he felt guilty for earning so much money. He had a money concept issue. Changing beliefs Changing your own beliefs will take time. It's a process. Cheating Is F'd Up - Part Two Recap Written by Brandi Abbott After a quick update of what happened last week, Jess tells us that Gerald Thomas met with Duane Deaver, Chief Deputy Jerry Hartman, a lawyer from the DA’s office, and the DA’s investigator to try and find evidence proving that he killed Jennifer on purpose instead of in self defense. Deaver and Assistant District Attorney Brown hadn’t actually seen Kirk’s bloody T-shirt yet; just photos. They quickly noticed a pointed tip in one of the bloodstains. Priya and Jess show Keith a picture of the shirt (which you can also see on the Facebook page @Effed Up) and he says it looks more like someone placed the knife on the shirt instead of wiping it. This stain led to a theory that Kirk killed Jennifer with the knife and then staged the scene by stabbing himself in the leg with the spear – twice. Because of this conversation, Thomas no longer believed it was the stain of a bloody handprint. Keith wonders why you would stab yourself somewhere that could be potentially fatal – this question leads to the information that the spear went all the way through Kirk’s leg and Keith, who’d previously thought as the DA did, changes his opinion about suspecting that Kirk had staged everything. Thomas now believed the stain was actually a knife being wiped across the shirt - even though his initial report said it was a hand. In April of 2009, prosecutors supplied the defense with some discovery including Thomas’ updated interpretation of the blood evidence that Kirk killed Jennifer and wiped his knife on his T-shirt. The defense attorneys, Joe Cheshire and Brad Bannon, hired their own forensic experts, Stuart James and Marilyn Miller. Kirk being a rich white guy, had the money to hire forensic specialists. Both of these experts thought the SBI Crime Lab was wrong and the bloodstain was a mirror stain, which basically is created when an item is folded together, transferring blood from portion of the item to a fresh, unmarred spot. Stuart was hired to do the analysis and Marilyn was hired to do the reconstruction, but because Marilyn also had experience with bloodstain analysis, she helped Stuart out. They determined that the stain was created by the fabric folding when the EMT’s were cutting off his shirt. The EMTs were focused on saving his life and just cut all his clothes off and tossed them to the side. The experts’ opinion was forwarded to the prosecutors, and Gerald Thomas claimed the ADA asked for additional testing to disprove that the bloodstain was a mirror image. A month later he sent an email to a colleague saying he would conduct tests to “shore up” his conclusions, and he and Deaver got a replica knife and T-shirt to try to recreate the stain. The local paper reported that there was a video of Thomas wearing a clean shirt, dipping the knife in blood only getting blood on the edges and carefully wiping the blood on his shirt in an attempt to duplicate the stain. They performed this test twice on camera with Deaver’s director-like commentary audible at the end of the tape. Deaver went so far as to conclude the tests by saying “that’s a wrap, baby.” Along with the fact that the knife’s blade would be covered in blood, not just the edges, Thomas and Deaver using brand new T-shirts instead of an older worn T-shirt like Kirk was wearing means that the fabric would have responded differently. Nevertheless, the tests were performed and they solidified Thomas’ new conclusion: The bloodstain was made from a pointed object being wiped on the shirt. In May of 2009, Thomas and Hartman from the sheriff’s office had a phone conversation, which Thomas included in his notes – as was protocol. He wrote down that Hartman told him that he was present when the EMTS cut off Kirk’s shirt, that the bloodstain was already on the shirt, and that he laid it flat to dry so the stain wouldn’t be impacted by any handling of it. In July of 2009, Brad Bannon, the defense attorney, called Thomas into his office because he wanted copies of all of his files. Although SBI analysts are discouraged from speaking to the defense, Brad had gotten permission from the DA’s office. Thomas gave him a copy of his complete file and Brad went through everything. While going through the file, something grabbed his attention. The copy of the initial report from September 2007 in the file was different from the copy he already had. He noted that the copy he had, had the numbers 24, 25, and 26 in the corner of the page - which appeared to represent page numbers. The second copy he had just been given had the same title but he noticed the page numbers where different, they were 1441, 1442, and 1443. At first glance it seemed to be the same report, but upon closer examination, one line where Thomas states his opinion about the shirt had changed. The first report had referred to the bloodstain being consistent with a bloody hand being wiped on the shirt and the new report referred to it being consistent with a pointed object. It seemed that Thomas had changed the report, but left the same date on it and didn’t follow the SBI Crime Lab standards of creating a separate report for an amendment. If Brad hadn’t asked for the file, the defense never would have known about the change in the report before the trial. Not only that, but, while looking through the file, Brad also found the notes from Thomas’ phone call with Hartman and he thought something was off with that as well and he decided to ask Thomas about it at trial. Marilyn Miller, the forensic expert, had examined Kirk’s jeans. There was a bloodstain inside the pocket where he kept his knife. She determined it was a transfer stain from where he reached into his pocket to get his knife and that it was his own blood; which supported that he had been stabbed before pulling out his knife. Thomas took the stand next and Brad brought up the phone conversation between him and Hartman where Hartman had said that he had been there when EMTs cut off Kirk’s shirt, that he had been the one to lay the shirt out, and that he had seen a pointed stain on it at that time. Thomas confirmed that that conversation had occurred and that was definitely what Hartman said. When Brad questioned Hartman about the same thing, Hartman said he didn’t say any of that. He said what he told Thomas was that he was not there when the EMTs cut the clothes off of Kirk, that when he did arrive, the clothing was crumpled so he laid the shirt out flat to dry. Thomas claimed that this was just a misunderstanding. Brad then dug into Thomas about his file. He wanted to know how defense attorneys would be able to understand whether or not Thomas was reinvestigating which Thomas tried to evade. Brad then asked if he talked about experiments that were being set up to prove theories and Thomas said yes. Brad then asked if it was important to record those theories and Thomas said “I have them in my head, I know what theory I’m trying to prove…” Later on in the questioning, Brad asked if he could produce any notes or anything that reflect what was said during the meeting with the ADA and Deaver and everyone in January of 2009. Thomas said he didn’t take notes, he had the pictures, and he initialed the photos so everyone would know that he took them and where they were from. Brad then showed him the pictures – they had no initials. Brad showed Thomas an envelope and asked if it was an envelope Thomas used to hold a swab of blood and Thomas said it was. Brad asked how the envelope described the swab and Thomas said “blood sample from cardboard boxes” to which Brad asked if he was aware that there was more than one cardboard box taken in for evidence. Thomas said he was aware and Brad pointed out that looking at the envelope, he would have no idea which box it came from. Brad then questioned Thomas about the change in his report and how nothing on it indicated it was changed. Thomas inexplicably told Brad that he’d amended the report. Which was apparent. The good news is that on August 21st, 2009, the jury deliberated for 6 hours and Kirk Thomas was found not guilty for reason of self-defense. Marilyn’s testimony about Kirk’s pocket ended up being the key evidence as juries actually do love an expert witness when they’re actually an expert and know what they’re talking about. Speaking of… when Marilyn Miller and Stuart James went into the sheriff’s office, not a single piece of that pocket had been cut out and tested and it was never mentioned in the SBI Crime Lab’s notes because no one had even bothered to test it. So, that’s great! But – hold up. Who’s Gerald Thomas and how did we get here?! Gerald Thomas was born in 1971 in North Carolina and graduated from Greensboro College in 2002 with a degree in art, history, and political science. In 2008, he got a Masters in Arts and Sociology. From 1992-1999 he worked at the Liberty Police Department. From 1995-1999, he was a detective with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, and from 1999-2003, he was the assistant police chief and police chief at the Liberty Police Department. Basically he spent 11 years in law enforcement and his only science background was attending a training course in basic bloodstain pattern analysis taught by Duane Deaver, Jennifer Elwell and others before joining the SBI. In 2007, he took a similar course at a local community college and in 2009 took an online graduate course from the University of Florida. It turns out that all agents who want to work in bloodstain pattern analysis have to attend a minimum of three crime scenes and have them reviewed by other analysts. Deaver did almost all of Thomas’ mentoring and report reviews, and after Thomas had recorded ten crime scenes, Deaver released Thomas to work crime scenes on his own. Inexplicably, according to Thomas, in the Turner case he didn’t know his report change counted as a new opinion and should have been added in a new report - which gives off the faint odor of bullshit. As of August of 2008, he completed the NC blood training program which is not a certificate program, but on his CV as of 2010, he listed it under his certifications – he lied on his resume. Priya, Keith and Jess discuss the idea of lying on one’s resume – not a SUPER nefarious practice. However, we’re talking about a person who is literally dealing with life and death situations. In addition to that, his CV also had a few references of cases he had provided testimony on which included the Turner case which had made him kind of a laughing stock in the forensic science community, and another case where he sat on the stand long enough to say his name and what he did before the judge dismissed him after finding out what Thomas’ testimony was going to be. In 2010 during the audit of the lab, the training Deaver did was one of the top concerns but there were many more. Marilyn Miller told the News & Observer that many forensic scientists outside of North Carolina had been concerned about Deaver and his protegé for a while but felt powerless to do anything. She said that he taught people his shoddy practices, which would cause them to teach the same and it would just be a cycle. This proves true when we find out that Thomas also taught courses in bloodstain analysis and even became an evaluator for training. Jess said that while they agree with Marilyn that it’s frightening to think of Deaver’s reach, it goes beyond the training to common sense and character. Even if we gave Thomas the benefit of the doubt that some things were human error like labeling the envelope, it doesn’t change the fact that he lied about the conversation with Hartman, lied on his resume about being certified, and edited a report without giving any indication he had done so which is against North Carolina law. There’s even a statute about that very thing! Jess says what if it wasn’t a rich white guy who could afford great lawyers and outside expert witnesses and no one had ever tested the pocket or questioned Thomas about his call with Hartman. She thinks they would be in prison for murder. Priya says that looking at Thomas’ past career, it shows an obvious pattern of him climbing the ladder and that since prosecutors give reviews and rate analysts, which can lead to promotion, it makes sense that he changed the report to match what they saw. Priya says Thomas has fascinated her since the beginning because she saw something saying he’d remained employed for the SBI, even after making all of those giant errors, the small errors and everything in between. It turns out, he not only remained employed there, but was promoted in 2010 to Assistant Director of Field Services of the SBI. In December of 2016, a reporter wrote that he couldn’t find anything saying whether or not Thomas was still working for the SBI and Priya ran into the same problem but she would Google occasionally. BUT… In October of 2018, she Googled and found that he was promoted to Deputy Director of the SBI. The entire SBI. Though there was an investigation of the SBI lab’s training and internal practices, the results of the investigation were not made public and any necessary changes to it were not made public. At this point the lack of transparency is expected, but still disappointing. On August 18th of 2010, the two former FBI agents who performed a five-month audit of the SBI Crime lab released their results. Out of over 15,000 cases that they examined, they found that the SBI Crime Lab withheld, misreported, or distorted evidence in more than 230 cases. F’d Up will be going into those cases and more next week.

Introduction: The time has come to get mellow and kick back my friends, as today we are lucky enough to have with us the Luke Skywalker of the cannabis industry, namely the cannabis pioneer Brad Melshenker. Brad is the founder of California and Colorado based 710 Labs, which in short is a standard-setting collective of passionate artists and cannabis rock stars renowned for its award-winning innovations and obsession with producing a myriad of quality products as they play a starring role in evolving the cannabis craft. On a side note, for those who are non-consumers, new to the industry or simply trivia geeks like myself, “710” happens to be not only the second most popular weed holiday, but “Oil” (i.e., a catch-all term for concentrates, extracts, and other hash products) spelled backwards and upside down. When Brad isn’t blazing new trails in the cannabis industry, creating boutonnières or dog collars made primarily of marijuana buds and leaves worn, respectively, by him and his groomsmen and three dogs at his wedding, or metaphorically passing the pipe around the country as he shares his knowledge of the history of glass pipe making and the artists who have created them, in a book aptly titled “This is a Pipe,” his passions are those of his wife Lauren and his daughters Callie and Lucy, rooting for THE Ohio State University football team and his beloved 2018 Stanley Cup champions, the Washington Capitals. Episode Notes: At 3:25, Brad touches upon incarceration due to cannabis related offenses, and how taxation could alternatively provide tax dollars to improve schools and infrastructure. At 5:01, Brad talks about the “fun rollercoaster” he has been on thus far, and moving to Boulder, Colorado to open the fourth ever dispensary in Boulder (and the first to introduce concentrates to Colorado). At 7:33, he discusses finding a landlord that was ok with his business, and ultimately the “battle” with the landlord that later ensued. At 8:45, Brad describes the situation in which the city of Boulder approached him and notified him that he couldn’t operate his business in a mixed-use building due to new code that was put in place. At 8:59, he shares the hurdles he faced in 2014 when his recently relocated 15,000 SF grow facility was robbed overnight, and sadly as a consequence, the city revoked all of Brad’s licenses. At 11:09, Brad discusses his failures and the lessons learned along the way, which lead to selling his business in Boulder and relocating to Denver. At 12:39, he touches upon the joy of waking up every day getting to do what he loves. At 14:16, Brad advises how 710 Labs is pushing boundaries, stepping outside of the box, setting trends, and going the extra mile to create quality products. At 15:58, he talks about his great partnership with Jason Post, the financier and active partner behind the business. At 17:12, Brad points out the importance of being true to yourself, happy with who you are, and not trying to be someone that you are not. At 19:33, he dives into how he and 710 Labs master their craft, quality and production. He compares it to the 2011 documentary, Jiro Dreams of Sushi (specifically perfecting one task for some time before moving on to a new task to perfect). At 21:00, Brad gives us his take on risk, how to mitigate it, and why entrepreneurs have to take risk. At 21:54, he said, “We are just [...] entering the first inning of the baseball game. It’s been pregame [...]. Now it’s really when we have to start addressing those risks a little more seriously.” At 23:47, Brad notes that his company is 100% compliant - don’t break the law when technically you’re breaking law (meaning those of the federal and not state governments)! At 24:10, he sees this business as a once in a lifetime, generational type of business, and would love to see his kids run the business. At 26:01, Brad shares that little or no research has been done on “the plant,” and thus far the United States has only given the University of Mississippi a license to grow and conduct research on cannabis. At 27:57, he explains the risk on the real estate side, and how he has to be upfront with his investors in regards to the risk. At 30:44, Brad tells a story of the time where he and his partners purchased a piece of dirt in Desert Hot Springs, California. At 34:08, he talks about branding, evolving products, and 710 Labs newly introduced ice pack program. At 35:18, Brad discusses his recently released book, “This is a Pipe,” and how glass artists are taking their games to a new level. At 39:08, he points out that money has never been the driving force, and instead the motivation is in building a successful company and culture where employees are happy and creating great products. At 40:44, Brad touches upon compliance, and not dipping in the grey area. At 42:09, he dishes on how to handle rejection; simply by keeping your head down, blocking out the noise, and pushing forward. At 43:48, Brad informs us of his mantra of not making decisions out of fear or shame. At 44:34, he said that hard work is part of the game. Work at what you love and it will come! At 45:37, Melshenker paints us a picture of his happy place - the crashing waves at the beach.

My guests today are Rich Stang and Brad Hoffman, who are partners in the Maryland accounting firm DeLeon & Stang – and it is not your average firm. I have included a case study on DeLeon & Stang in my upcoming book, Taking the Numb out of Numbers, and I brought Rich and Brad on the podcast so they can talk more about their fascinating firm. DeLeon & Stang is very much an anticipatory organization. They have created an exceptionally positive culture and go beyond traditional services by providing clients with a future-forward look at the financial situation. In this episode, we’ll examine how their future-forward approach applies to creating a mission statement, deciding to open a new location, rolling out new benefits in 2018, and more. Why is DeLeon & Stang different? When Brad and Allen DeLeon started the firm, neither of them had worked in public accounting. So as they started the firm, they didn't quite know how a CPA firm typically ran. “In some respects, that maybe hurt us a little bit. But in a lot of respects, I think it helped in that we didn't have some of the idiosyncrasies that you hear about in traditional CPA firms.” So they put employees first, they said yes before no, and they had fun – because they didn’t know any better. Just recently, this has led to two key decisions that a lot of CPA firms would not make:They opened a new firm in Frederick, MD, without an existing book of business or acquiring a new firm. Frederick is definitely a good market to be in, it’s a growing market, but that wasn’t the main reason they opened the office: it was a huge commuting benefit for employees! Traffic in the D.C. area can be bad, to put it mildly, and this office can save some people hours in their daily commute. On top of that, it’s the kind of modern office that you probably don’t associate with CPAs, and it’s likely to appeal to a younger generation.DeLeon & Stang recently introduced an unlimited PTO policy. It’s still a work in progress, they knew it wasn’t going to be perfect. “We still have strides to make, but we thought it was the best thing to do. We just want people to do their jobs… It doesn't really matter when they go home, as long as the clients are happy and as long as things are getting done.” I think DeLeon & Stang is one of the most interesting firms in the country – and hopefully, we’ll see a lot more firms that look like this in the future. The next key is movement. When Brad had a lover who was silent and didn't move, it was one of the worst experiences he's had. Kim says that using movement will also help propel your energy. The next key is breath. This intensifies the orgasm itself. It is extremely important for the man. Combining breath and sound propels the sexual energy and improves the orgasm. When the breathing is synced with our partner we sync our brain waves as well. Brad challenges listeners to use breath, sound and movement. Kim says to put your hand over your partners heart and sync your breathing. You should look into their eyes. Pay attention to their reactions. Feel the senses that are experienced. http://tantrichearts.com

Allie has been struggling with her hasty decision to break up with Jimmy, when Miss Annie, Pastor Jack's secretary, shared some wisdom on the subject of Grace. And Allie and her Guardian Grand Parents also had a deep discussion along those lines that lead to a phone call from Allie to Jimmy asking him to meet at Pop's Malt shop … perhaps to discuss the most important decision of Allie's life. That's When Brad the photographer's plan unfolded …
Brad Feld is an author, blogger and he invests in early stage technology companies. In fact he has invested in over 1,000 companies between his Techstars accelerator, his Foundry Ground investment firm, and his own deals. He is our guest on The Influencer Economy podcast this week.Imagine a world where the only media channels were TV, radio, print magazines, and newspapers. And if you were a start-up entrepreneur, you had to do P.R. in order to get someone's attention for an article or any media coverage. When Brad started his first company Feld Technologies in 1987, while an undergrad student at MIT in Cambridge, that was the world for Brad to gain any media coverage for his company. This is one of the reasons why Brad was an early adopter for blogging back in 2004. In this episode Brad details his early motivations for blogging and writing on the web. In addition to his how and why he wrote his first book: Venture Deals. We talk about how often people think too much about their goals and sometimes it's worth starting something to figure out if it's a good idea or bad idea. When he started Techstars with his 3 other co-founders he had no idea if it would work, but figured it was worth a shot. And at the very least he would make some new friends. We chat about how people need to experiment as start-up founders, bloggers, podcasters and sometimes when you don't reach your goals, another less obvious goal emerges which can lead you down the right path.Brad and I both believe in the "Give Before You Get" model and helping people is all about giving in the system. And that oftentimes we meet people who are takers and over time you realize you spend less time with people who take. Often when Brad meets startup founders, he develops relationships with the founders in advance of investing. And he gives to founders before realizing if he'll invest in their ideas or not.Brad also pursues 20% of his life where he allocates his days to random things. He'll do a fake VC Day or a fake CEO day where he does stuff that allows his universe to be open to different connections.Brad's Blog Feld Thoughts: http://www.feld.com/TechStars: http://www.techstars.com/Sqord: https://www.sqord.com/SXSW: http://www.sxsw.com/Jeff Ullrich and Earwolf: http://www.earwolf.com/person/jeff-ullrich/

Season 2, Episode 19 – This week, we’re going full-throttle with the beer-geekdom and drinking beers with Brad Daniels at his awesome home brewery, Peace Brewing, the third of our three stops at three Orange County breweries. This week, we’re at one of the coolest homebreweries in southern California, Bradley Daniels‘ Peace Brewing in Anaheim. While his place isn’t an actual “craft brewery”, his home is legendary in the Orange County beer world, and we thought it appropriate to feature his brewery/bar/man-cave in this, the last stop of our Orange County brewery tour. Peace Brewing We kick the show off with a blonde ale that Brad has brewed 12 times so far. This recipe was actually written by our very own Matt Becker when he worked at O’Shea’s Brewing back in the day. The beer was a hit with Brad’s friends, so he continued to brew it. Brad’s home is quite beautiful and he hosts many events that cater to a broad range of people, so having a beer that’s approachable and easy drinking is ideal. This beer is perfect for such occasions, but can also be appreciated by even the geekiest beer geek. Brad has a very unique home brewery. It’s essentially a three-tier brewing system without the brewing stand. When Brad began homebrewing 25 years ago, he didn’t have a lot of money to spend on brewing equipment and he pieced together what he could. His brewing setup today is very much like his original system 25 years ago, with a few tweaks here and there. Brad gave us a quick tour of his setup and brewday in the video above. Brad’s Brewing Area Next up is a stout that Brad has on tap and in bottles nearly year-round, it seems. It’s an oatmeal stout that’s served with nitro on tap, but also traditionally conditioned in bottles for portability. This beer is a big hit in Brad’s circles, and in his own words, he “can’t seem to get away from it.” This beer is essentially a dry stout, but at a slightly higher ABV. “Brewer’s Licorice” is used in this beer to give it a unique edge. Brad’s Homebrew Setup We wrap up the show with a beer that was featured on a previous episode, Brad and Greg’scollaboration beer, Belgian Brunch. When we first tried the beer, we all agreed that it wasn’t quite ready for consumption. The carbonation wasn’t quite there, and the beer was a bit fragmented, overall. Seven months later, the beer is tasting great, but is still a suitable contender for cellaring. Bradley Daniels Brad is a genuinely great guy. He’s a true beer geek, upstanding citizen of Anaheim, and a gracious host. We can’t thank him enough for having us. We had a blast! BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. Fatty popcorn boy is me — two years after exiting a really strict ketogenic eating strategy (mostly on account of R&D while writing Keto Reset Diet with Mark Sisson) and embarking upon an experiment to increase overall caloric intake, including by default, carb intake. The experiment was inspired by my NourishBalanceThrive ( https://nourishbalancethrive.com/ ).com consultants Chris Kelly and Dr. Tommy Wood — both of whom have appeared on the podcast. From review of my bloodwork, there was speculation that I might be depleted from the combined stress of high intensity workouts at advanced age and ketogenic eating patterns with extended daily fasts. The experiment worked really well and I enjoyed a noticeable bump in energy and recovery rate. Dr. Tommy assured me that I could hit the healthy foods hard, theoretically up to the point of maximum returns represented by adding body fat! Fast forward to two years later and this is exactly what happened: With standards relaxed, occasional indulgences started to become habitual indulgences. Without really noticing, I had packed on around eight pounds of extra body fat. Shown is a photo from March, 2019 weighing 172 pounds — the most ever in my life. The comparison photo is exactly three months later, weighing 164lb. I’ve been around this weight for over 20 years, but occasionally with varying levels of muscle mass and body fat. In this recent effort, my weight change would be mostly all body fat, so I’d guess I was 12% level at 172, and 8% level at 164. This has never been a main concern, but it was an awakening to see a body built by popcorn, dark chocolate, and habitual mindless eating in the mirror. Always eating healthy food with high standards and keto friendly in recent years, but lacking any guidelines, structure, or discipline regarding caloric intake/meal patterns. I might as well have had a dark chocolate IV at times! This got me thinking about the absolute importance of discipline in one’s diet. We’ve all heard countless success stories from people who cut processed food, grains, sugar, and bad oils, and immediately lost a ton of weight. However, it’s also no secret that many folks actually struggle with weight gain after they’ve switched to eating a whole-foods, nutrient dense diet. How can this be? Well, it can result from many different factors, but a lot of the time, it’s just the simple fact that you can’t expect to mindlessly eat and not gain weight – even if those foods still do fall into the “healthy” category, using discipline and following guidelines is still essential, no matter how strict the parameters you set for yourself already are. Yes, one of the great parts of following the paleo diet is that you aren’t supposed to have to calorie count and worry about straying off your diet – and this is true, but it doesn’t mean you can just eat whatever you want (especially as you get older) and expect to fit into the same clothes! We all want our bodies to feel good and look good, but it isn’t always easy to get there. Here are some insights I’d like to share if you have body composition goals or frustrations, and want to do something about it and succeed: * Writing a book causes body fat increase. Need to negotiate for fat farm/spa retreat tuition with future book deals. * Modern humans enjoy incredible luxury, comfort, decadence. This is mostly unhealthy. We need to orchestrate ways to move more, perform explosive fitness efforts, introduce hormetic stressors like cold or heat exposure, spend more time fasting/eat less food, disconnect from hyperstimulation. * We can benefit from implementing habits through repetition and endurance. A main success factor for fat loss has been no calories until 12 noon. Simple. Commitment. No will power or decision fatigue involved. Just wait for the clock to strike, then consider eating options. * Similarly, I believe morning immersion into 34-38F chest freezer cold plunge helps boost fat metabolism. I often get an intense hunger sensation afterward, which I ignore and it passes in ~15 min (Dr. Cate Shanahan confirms this is ghrelin spike in stomach timeline). * Dropping fat is way more difficult than adding fat, duh. I have more empathy and appreciation for the challenge. It’s interesting to trace how the definition of the word diet has changed drastically over the years. But let’s go back to its original meaning – diete, as it was first used in the English language, used to mean “a day’s journey.” What a cool concept! Instead of thinking of diet as this restrictive, negative thing that you must follow exactly every single day, why not think of it as a day’s journey: a positive experience, a series of mindful decisions you make for yourself, as you nourish yourself, in order to continue on with your day. If this whole fatty popcorn boy saga has truly drilled in and cemented one thing, it is the very valuable lesson that self-discipline = self-love (Thank you Will Smith for that one!). It’s all about making the best decision for yourself in that present moment, and sometimes that means a healthy, homecooked meal, and sometimes that means you just need to munch on some popcorn and chocolate! Diet is a day’s journey, one that you are in charge of, and yeah, it’s easy (and even normal) to get a little lax now and then. But when you exercise discipline and mindfulness when it comes to the food you consume throughout the day, every single day, not only does it make it so much easier for you to stay on track with your health and fitness goals, but that kind of disciplined mindset bleeds into everything else you do in life. Self-discipline equals self-love (and, also allows you to enjoy eating your popcorn without becoming the fatty popcorn boy!) *TIMESTAMPS:* Brad talks about discovering that he needed to lose excess fat. [04:26] Sometimes appetite regulation and caloric efficiency sometimes don’t line up well. [07:23] Brad restructured his eating style and found it enhanced his enjoyment of eating. [10:14] The idea of carnivore diet is emerging. [14:19] If you're experiencing a fat reduction plateau, get in there and do some weight bearing sprints. [16:23] Dr Phil Maffetone references the idea that a sprint workout can have a metabolic effect lasting for up to 72 hours afterward. [18:37] As soon as you spike insulin, you shut off fat burning. [20:36] When Brad tried to change his eating habits, he found it more difficult than he thought. *This podcast was inspired by an email exchange with my friend and former podcast guest* *Martin Brauns* ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2018/12/05/martinbrauns/ ) *, who asked me what my diet is like these days.* Reflecting on my current diet, it’s clear to me that while some things have changed, many other elements of my diet have remained the same. I still stay away from *The Big Three* (refined sugars, grains, and industrial seed oils), but one thing that I used to absolutely love making, salads, are gone. I can barely remember the last time I had one, and I haven’t had any cravings for one. Still, my philosophy has always been to aim for balance and enjoy myself, while staying committed to my health and fitness goals, and the foods that best support those goals. The main idea is I’ve drifted to *carnivore-ish pattern,* and then I still have this and that when it comes to plant foods leaking in, particularly to *get extra carbs.* It seems like the consensus these days is to ditch processed junk food, and then you are way down the road to health, disease prevention, and longevity. Industrial seed oils are the #1 priority, followed by grains and sugars. And hyper-palatable foods (combining sugar, fat and salt - think of my popcorn ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2019/07/05/fpb/ ) - and any dessert, processed snack, or all-American meal like pasta and meatballs, sandwiches, pancakes with butter and maple syrup, etc.). Anyone can say what they want about a vegan/plant-based diet, but *it is a high risk to eliminate the most nutritious* *foods* on earth. But, if they are ditching processed crap and instead eating hummus, lentils, and smoothies, they are much better off. Personally, I have been on the ancestral eating style for 13 years now - no grains, no bad oils, and almost no processed sugar. The carnivore idea has captivated me since I was first exposed in March 2019, so I have made a permanent shift to animal-emphasis and superfood-emphasis. I have not had a salad in 2 years and no longer go looking for plants to add to my diet in the name of health. It’s also the consensus that if we want to look for the cleanest animal products and try to eliminate the feedlot animals, conventional dairy, eggs, processed meat, etc., are not the way to go. Even 80% of Atlantic salmon on the market is farmed. Unfortunately, there is a huge difference between the quality and nutrition in farmed vs wild-caught fish. It’s pretty simple. Look through the *Carnivore Scores Chart* ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2020/12/09/carnivore-scores-a-food-chart-to-clarify-and-simplify/ ) and put it on your fridge. We worked hard on this thing and it’s really powerful to imagine how you are eating on the ranking system. It’s funny to think that when you order your delicious chicken and avocado salad, *you are actually eating below the steak line!* Same for making a super duper smoothie with celery and kale and almond milk and protein powder: you are getting calories for energy, some *concentrated plant poisons,* and *then not much* in the way of dense nutrition. These wild and crazy guys I hang with like Saladino ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2020/02/18/dr-paul-saladino-the-carnivore-code/ ) and my main man Brian “Liver King” Johnson of Ancestral Supplements are quite inspiring. I will make a big yellow sardine omelet made with 9 pastured egg yolks and sardines in the middle. And accompanied by thin slices of frozen, raw, grass fed liver, heavily salted. *Now that’s a superfood meal.* I’m also not worried about avoiding carbs in the name of “carnivore” and I don’t have any autoimmune issues or inflammatory conditions. And at my age, and with my athletic goals, I can benefit from carbs, in order *to help speed recovery,* as well as minimize the overall stress score of doing things like fasting, high intensity workouts, and being in the 55+ category. Robb Wolf always advises to “lift more weights and eat more protein” for a reason. Hence besides the animal food staples you will find these plants making their way: * Tons of 80%+ dark chocolate (I mean tons - some days I’ll notice an entire bar is gone!) * Lots of avocados * Frequent sweet potatoes in oxtail stew, sweet potato fries to add to meals * Frequent squashes with during the winter season (acorn, butternut, kabocha, etc) * Canned sundried tomatoes very often in eggs or with meat meals * Very small amounts of nuts and Brad’s Macadamia Masterpiece * Corn tortillas fried in olive oil/butter to accompany an egg meal or a steak meal (very often!) * I’ve started to try spoonfuls of raw honeycomb per Paul’s enthusiasm * Occasional popcorn with heavy butter and olive oil (supposed to be *a treat, not a habit)* * Occasional treats, like cheesecake on my birthday, which was excellent, but I very rarely have other desserts, and I when I do, they’re in small portions * I have made a Paleo Pumpkin pie a few times recently (very bland but a nice “dessert” using crushed nuts for the crust, canned pumpkin, eggs, and maybe 1-2 tsp of honey total) * Excellent St. Benoit vanilla yogurt (I love to add cacao nibs too) * Occasional protein smoothie with coconut milk and frozen banana, if I want to recover (I also add powder creatine, collagen, glutamine, and electrolytes) * Occasional sesame blue chips or red hot blue chips with guacamole * Often cooking steak with onions in the pan * Zero fruit in winter. Frequent berries in summer, andccasional mango and papaya in non-winter This big change inspired by carnivore has included no salad, no stir fry, no raw veggies, smoothies, leafy greens, and almost no cruciferous veggies since March 2019. Prior to that, I actually ate tons of plants. However, now when I come to think of it, if someone serves me a plate with broccoli spears, I will eat it to be polite. But truthfully, it has tasted like cardboard since March ‘19. Seriously, the messaging brainwashed me, and it’s a true experience. I look at broccoli now and have no appetite, and it has no taste. I used to love eating and making huge, beautiful salads, and yet, I have not had the slightest interest for two years. Finally, get a load out of Brian’s crazy message ( https://ancestralsupplements.com/about-us.html ) - one of the best messages I’ve ever read on the Internet about healthy living. *TIMESTAMPS:* We first ditch processed modern foods as our first objective to improving the diet. This starts with the seed oils. [01:39] Make a sincere commitment to eliminate or cut back on refined grains and sugars. [04:54] Brad changed his diet 13 years ago after he learned about primal living. [07:32] Now let’s talk about the carnivore diet movement. [08:54] Some plant toxins have immediate adverse effects.[10:16] Just because you’re eating meat or fish, doesn’t necessarily make it healthy. [12:25] There is a big difference between properly healthily sustainably raised animals and the feedlot animals. [15:54] A five-day fast has worked for Brian Johnson. Hear what that’s about. [17:22] Brad’s midday break fast meal is a huge omelet. [19:32] You may want to tone down your effort to avoid carbs. It depends on your age and activity. [22:05] Eighty percent or greater dark chocolate is a must!! Dark chocolate has many health benefits. [24:20] Avocados and sweet potatoes in ox-tail soup hold an important place in Brad’s diet. [25:10] There's research that the occasional dosing of something toxic will be considered a hormetic stressor and actually serve to fine tune your body's antioxidant response. [26:39] Is it okay to eat fruit? [28:51] It is an individual experience to try your own body’s response to different foods. If it is truly healthy and nutritious, it shouldn’t cause stomach distress. [29:28] Snacking is an extra indulgence to enjoy. When Brad is adhering to the two meals a day, he isn’t hungry for snacks. [32:50] Full-fat yogurt can be a good addition to your diet. It can be a source of extra protein if you need it. [37:44] Just because Brad is focusing on carnivore rationale, he’s not against sauteed onions or other vegetables when he makes a steak. [39:39] The main message is to learn how different foods affect your body, educate yourself, focus on the healthy foods, and don’t worry about deviating from your planned diet on occasion. *Luke busts out of the gate with a hilarious freestyle rap of the rich arrogant entrepreneur buying and sellin’ companies, houses,* *and private jets. After five minutes we catch our breath and get into an incredibly deep conversation that will get you thinking and reflecting on the importance of pursuing the highest expression of your talents and contributing to the community at large.* The funny stuff at the start does set up some moral questions, because things are out of hand these days with the glorification of wealth, celebrity, entrepreneurism, and of course social media. Nothing against sharing the exciting moments of your lives on social media, but it’s critical to remember that, as Luke says, “We don’t post things that are uninspiring.” Luke is a Renaissance man who has had a long career as a writer in the realms of health and diet, Hollywood, and even fiction. He worked together with his wife, Dr. Cate Shanahan, on the mega-bestselling tome for healthy eating called Deep Nutrition ( https://www.amazon.com/Deep-Nutrition-Your-Genes-Traditional/dp/1250113849/ref=sr_1_1?crid=244T1MA4U8JQA&keywords=deep+nutrition+by+catherine+shanahan&qid=1567997844&s=gateway&sprefix=deep+nu%2Caps%2C206&sr=8-1 ). He has also done some masterful work that no one knows about due to the nature of the ghostwriting profession. Luke offers some reflection on the commonly-cited mission statement to “be in service.” This is easy for people at the top of the mountain to say, and also believe sincerely. For the rest of us, we have to strike a constant balance between serving the community and looking out for our own needs and best interests. Luke strongly believes that being in a perpetual state of service can actually put you at a disadvantage, because you’re not out collecting “the flowers of experience” - which you need to do in order to have balance in your life. As Luke so beautifully puts it: “It is your obligation, on occasion, to be selfish....It is absolutely necessary to the respiration of your own relationship with yourself.” Yes, Luke’s got mad wisdom to drop and this episode showcases how this supremely deep thinker can effortlessly weave in facts from history and philosophy into a discussion on serious, personal subjects such as relationships , parenting, and values. Listeners of all ages will be able to get something out of this enlightening talk with a truly engaging conversationalist and storyteller , and thanks to Luke’s intelligence and depth, endless curiosity, and unique perspective, it’s a particularly special one. Enjoy! *TIMESTAMPS:* Luke Shanahan is husband and co-author of Dr. Cate Shanahan. He and Brad, looking at some podcasts, satirize an interview with a bullshitter. [05:17] More seriously, they analyze the difference between high-minded ideas and reality [13:32] The people who are happiest have a network of fulfilling relationships where they feel significant and they can give back. [17:27] If you are always in service to others, you don’t get to collect your own experience. [20:10] Language is powerful. What is its function? [26:24] Parents who do everything for their kid, are not necessarily giving the kid a gift. [29:39] Values are not something you carry around in a satchel since childhood. [31:44] To improve yourself in an area, competing with someone just slightly better leads to growth - ful l change. [37:32] We often test our values because we haven’t exercised them. [38:21] Throughout this show, they are asking you to ask “what is the function?” [41:43] Why do we take such big risks? [45:17} We create icons so we can tear them apart. [46:30] When Brad was a triathlete, he started out unsophisticated, but then began to take himself seriously. [48:13] You are not your business. [50:28] What is the function of ownership? [56:16] No matter how much you are serving, you do have to remember to serve yourself. [01:02:11] Luke describes a good example of a subtle power play. [01:07:53] What do your values do to you? [01:11:08] When you take it when someone puts you down, or you do something you don’t particularly want to do, you are memorizing that you are not important. [01:14:19] Live your values.
