In this part two episode with molecular biologist Brad Marshall, Dr. Anthony Gustin dives into the science of fat storage and what you can do once your metabolism goes out of whack from consuming too much vegetable oils and sugar. As Brad explains, it’s not just as simple as removing these items from your diet, although that is a great first step to take. Instead, it’s about understanding a gnarly process called SCD1, which Brad and Dr. Gustin tackle in this episode, and stopping it dead in its tracks so that you can start to burn your own fat again. By doing this, you’ll be able to lose fat and keep it off once and for all. On top of that, Brad and Dr. Gustin also chat about what we can learn from animals who hibernate and how this translates to human health, the role leptin plays in fat storage, and whether there’s a genetic component at play here. They also chat about changing your metabolic rate and how you can do this, the desaturase index and how it relates to obesity, and so much more. If you missed Brad’s first episode, he’s an incredible wealth of knowledge. He went to Cornell to study molecular biology, he started a charcuterie business and several successful restaurants, and, most recently, he branched out into pig farming. Brad’s also known for starting The Croissant Diet and he’s a food historian who shares several fun facts along the way. Tune in now to learn more about the science behind fat storage and what you can do to finally eliminate fat once and for all.

This conversation takes us inside the heart and mind of two stroke survivors, who are co-hosts on their own program, Don’t Count Me Out. Jo Ann Glim and Brad Neufeld experienced different types of life-changing neurological events and have now partnered in hosting a program to help other victims of strokes share their own stories and learn about successful coping. How do people prepare for a future so different from what was expected, and how do we overcome sadness and depression over the losses that are so heavy, for so many? What happens during the grief phase and what comes next? Instead of seeing closed doors, how can we open new doors and explore new opportunities? As Brad says, Every challenge that we face in life is conquerable, especially when we work together. Mini Bios Jo Ann Glim was born in Chicago, Illinois to a military family and raised in Anacortes, Washington in the far reaches of the Pacific Northwest. Tragically, Jo Ann's mother passed away from a stroke when Jo Ann was fourteen. This was the beginning of a life-path plotted with many dark events. In her own words, “Instead of consuming me, they made me stronger, and I’m here to tell you, darkness can be replaced with light.” Jo Ann’s three-pronged career of broadcast and print media, freelance writing, and business management formed her into the indie author she is today. Her 5-Star books, the award-winning Begotten With Love, and her newest release Trapped Within, are both non-fiction, life-stories filled with challenges, hope, and humor. A paralyzing stroke nearly twenty-four years ago left her most of all, grateful for life itself! Tapping, also known as Emotional Freedom Technique is a tool where you use your fingers to 'tap' on a sequence of acupressure points on the body.I know it does sound a bit crazy, but think of it as acupuncture without the needles. It's a tool that has been shown in different studies to reduce cortisol (stress hormone). In one sense it's a form of active meditation. In this episode of Let's Talk Thyroid, I'm chatting with internationally renowned 'tapper', Brad Yates about the technique which really is quite simple, so once you know how, it's easy to use anytime and anyplace on pretty much anything!Stress can be a trigger for auto-immune thyroid diseases (Hashimoto's and Graves). Stress also creates inflammation which wreaks havoc on thyroid (& much more) health, so the more tools we have in our stress relief toolkit the better. As Brad says, if our bodies aren't constantly dealing with 'ambient stress', all the time, there is more bandwidth for the body to heal. So whether tapping directly or indirectly helps our thyroid health, it doesn't really matter! There are times of course when it's best to seek professional support or to even tap with a friend. If you're dealing with some really big emotions, stress or trauma, please get support. You'll find it easier to WATCH the actual tapping sequences. We go through 2 in the episode. 42. How Brad Pace Helped Create 8 Successful Digital Ventures, Including One that Reached $450 Million in Annual Revenue

“What new technology does is create new opportunities to do a job that customers want done.” -Tim O'Reilly, founder of O'Reilly Media Technology has created a new type of venture, digital ventures. As the internet and technology become more and more part of our lives it is essential that businesses take advantage of them. Brad Pace has been a part of 8 successful digital ventures that we discuss in today's episode. Brad Pace is a former business partner of mine. We were partners in SocialNexus, where we did a lot of work creating digital ventures with Brazilian companies. He has also worked on many other successful digital ventures, including Ancestry.com, MyFamily.com, About.com, Finicity, World Vital Records, and more. He is currently the president of TeamDial. Ancestry Early in his career, Brad heard about Ancestry and decided to go work there. He was their 30th employee and one of the first developers working on myfamily.com. Myfamily.com became very successful, one of the top ten most-used internet sites. It was one of the first photo-sharing sites. At the time Myspace was one of the only other social networks, but people weren't sharing photos there, and MySpace didn't have a lot of the traditional social networking features. Brad and his coworkers made it really easy for users to share photos between them and their extended family. They had more photos shared on their network than anyone else on the internet. At the time, it was the second-largest subscription service on the internet. Also at Ancestry, Brad helped build the first online family tree. About.com In the year 2000, About.com was very popular. About.com had guides who published content on hundreds of topical sites. They specialized in human-curated content and it was one of the top five internet properties. Brad worked for a company that had been purchased by About.com. Finicity After About.com, Brad worked for Finicity, an online budgeting system. Their system was based on the envelope budgeting system when you have an envelope with your budget for food, an envelope for spending, etc., and can only spend what is in the envelope. When most people stopped using physical money, Finicity was the first to bring the envelope budgeting system online. However, they didn't have a platform mentality. Finicity thought their value was in the subscription to use their software, but the actual value was in the data they were collecting. A new company called Mint came along, offering the whole thing for free, and then monetized with the data. Mint had a platform mentality and understood the value of the data they were collecting. Brad stressed the importance of entrepreneurs today having a platform mentality. World Vital Records & We're Related While Brad was working for Finicity, the founder of Ancestry called Brad and told him about a new business he wanted to start. Brad joined him and they co-founded World Vital Records, a company similar to Ancestry, but instead of owning the content, World Vital Records leased it. With this system, they were able to approach content owners throughout the world who had refused to sell to Ancestry. World Vital Records leased the content, putting it in their database and paying the content owners a percentage based on the content's usage. World Vital Records monetized the family history records by selling subscriptions to members.  Around this time, Facebook announced that they were going to let third parties develop on their platform. Brad and his cofounder decided they were going to build an app for Facebook that customers could use to connect with their families. They called the app We're Related. At the time, you couldn't go on Facebook and say this is my dad, brother, mom, etc. In a short period of time, the app reached more than 60 million users and became the fourth largest Facebook app based on the number of app installs. They received an offer to buy from The Walt Disney Internet Group because of this success.  However, this is a perfect example of building a skyscraper on someone else's land. After Facebook saw the success of We're Related, they implemented some similar functionality into the core Facebook offering. Then, they implemented new policies to make it very difficult for We're Related to compete. The parent company of We're Related ultimately sold their assets for an amount far less than what Disney had been willing to pay.  We should do our best to build our ventures on land or platforms we can control. If we do build our ventures on someone else's land, we should also build something on a different piece of land that we own, and working to drive people from the leased land to the land we own. Entrepreneurs almost always underestimate the risk related to building their business on other platforms or leased land, and this often is very destructive.  SocialNexus After World Vital Records, Brad went on to co-found SocialNexus. At this venture, Brad and I helped build several digital ventures in Brazil and built niche social sites. We funded the business by doing consulting work and put much of the profits back into the business to build our own sites. In our consulting work, we helped Brazilian companies to take concepts that were working in the US and roll them out in Brazil. This is a monetization model called “cool hunting.” Partner Fusion and TravelPass  After we sold SocialNexus, Brad became one of the 6 founders of Partner Fusion. Brad and his partners worked in the travel and entertainment space but wanted to pivot into being a platform and product company. Partner Fusion began by working in many different verticals, such as hotel booking sites, airline ticket sites, show tickets sites for Las Vegas, health and nutrition sites, etc. They tested all these sites and ran with the best one which was in the hotel space. After that, they focused on selling hotel rooms and changed their name to TravelPass. They sold hotel rooms to big online travel agencies (OTAs) like Expedia, Priceline, and Booking.com and became an OTA themselves. In spite of competing with these large OTAs, TravelPass had a lot of success. They were able to compete with companies like Booking.com--which buys more ads from Google than anyone else in the world--because they were scrappy and agile; they had the flexibility that Booking.com didn't. They were also paying attention to the small details and therefore knew their customers really well. Another key element to their success was their platform. Instead of regurgitating 500 results as other platforms did, their platform pulled hotel inventory in, figured out who had the best price, and gave that price to their customers. They doubled their growth every year, and in 4 years they grew it to $450 million in annual revenue, doing $1.5 million in bookings every day. Soar.com After TravelPass, Brad moved on to Soar.com, a company that helps coaches run their businesses. Brad had never had a coach before, but he quickly learned the value of having a personal coach, whether it's for your business, personal life, health, etc. Soar.com built their platform so every coach could run their business as a small business. Many didn't know how to manage their business or understand who their target audience was. To help with this, Soar.com provided master classes, zoom conferencing, billing, and help with marketing. At the same time, part of Soar.com focused on voice technology with an app for Amazon Alexa and other virtual assistants. One of Soar.com's customers was one of the top sales training companies in the world who had a lot of content (hours of video, voice, etc.) that would sit on their website unused. Brad and his associates made all of that content available to them by building an app to provide the best info through voice technology. With this app's great tagging and searching technology, their customers are able to ask their virtual assistant things like, “What are the four sales techniques that I need to use?” and it will play the audio that they are looking for. Users can also upload their own audio. Brad uploaded a recording of his grandfather from the 1960s singing songs at his 80th birthday party. Brad was able to play this for his day by simply saying “play Grandpa Western.” TeamDial Brad's latest venture is a startup company called Teamdial. A friend of his had been running and building technology for a call center for more than 8 years. Brad came in and suggested that they make this software self-serve. TeamDial allows people to organize and make their outbound calls from their small team. They have realized that even with social media, email, and texting, the best way to connect to customers is still through voice. Key Takeaways Thank you so much Brad for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: As Brad did with Finicity, we may be able to take something that works in the physical world and transfer it into the digital world. As with the, We're Related Facebook app, we should build skyscrapers on the land that we own, and avoid building our skyscrapers on leased land. Brad and I both had connections to Brazil before doing SocialNexus. We can find successful concepts or products from one market and use our connections to take them to another market. This is called “cool hunting.” Just like Partner Fusion/TravelPass tested many different verticals and then decided to focus on hotel bookings, we can also test different opportunities, and then focus on the opportunity that proves the most successful.   We can add new product lines by selling coaching to our existing customers.  Connect with Brad If you enjoyed this interview and want to connect with Brad or his business, you can find him on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/radpace or visit his company's website at https://www.teamdial.com/.   Want to be a Better Digital Monetizer? Today Brad Kellogg is the Director of Consulting Services at Houston Methodist Global Healthcare, and he opens up on how his career journey has involved plenty of risks, a lot of change, and a humble reliance on God. Early in life, Brad learned about the ups and downs that can come with working. His family ran a car rental franchise, but the business went bankrupt in the 1980s. And as a kid, Brad started a successful lawn care company with a friend, and also experienced some challenging issues at church that made him come to his own faith. As Brad entered university, he had a desire to work as an engineer internationally after an internship in East Africa. When Brad graduated, he found a full-time engineering position with Schlumberger, a publicly traded oilfield services company. But entered the workforce when oil prices dropped to historical lows, so he experienced job uncertainty during his first months relocating to Texas. While Brad was able to keep his job and move up the corporate ladder, he and his wife Amy would have to transfer to Abu Dhabi and then to Venezuela. That’s when Brad felt like he was a cog in a big machine, and eventually took a large pay cut to shift industries from oil to healthcare. He started as a biomedical engineer and worked his way up to COO of a well-known hospital, Oasis Hospital now Kanad Hospital in the United Arab Emirates. Brad’s learned to hold things loosely and trust that whatever’s next is ultimately part of God’s plan for his life. You’ll hear more about it on this episode of Faith Collides. Little known fact about Brad Love: he holds the world record for the youngest sounding voice for any fully grown adult male. Okay, that might not literally be true. But the guy sounds young -- a fact that belies his prominence and esteem as a professor in the field of cognitive science. In fact, he's such a venerable academic figure that he's mentored students who have gone on to establish themselves as venerable academic figures. So how does he keep himself so young? That's easy: constant exploration. As Brad says in our conversation, he has never felt like he quite locked into doing just one thing; he's always on the lookout for what strikes him as new, fresh, and interesting. We get into a wide-ranging discussion in this episode including the differences between the British and American higher education systems, how to read through a new scientific literature (for example, should you just open a thousand Chrome tabs and hope to get through them eventually?), and what the ideal psychology undergraduate curriculum would look like. We also talk about Brad's unique experiences as an undergrad at Brown and as a grad student at Northwestern. Brad Jasper is an American developer with a track record of creating interesting projects - everything from an app to turn videos into podcasts to a website to help remote workers. Now he’s focussing on Bitcoin SV with his latest project, Bit.sv, a platform for every kind of digital content creator, including coaches, journalists, artists or traders, allowing them to offer premium content, monetized with Bitcoin SV.Bit.sv is Brad’s second BSV project, the first being Open Directory, where you can earn money for submitting useful or popular links. He says it’s “Reddit on the blockchain”. Although Open Directory is still active, Brad says he’s now committed to making Bit.sv a success, because it’s “the big one”. After working on many different projects, he thinks he’s found the sweet spot between what he wants to make and what people would pay for: “If I could work on one idea for the rest of my life it would be this one. I really care about getting creators independent ...I think the most impactful thing I can do is to work on my best idea, which is to get as many people as possible working on their best ideas. And that's just about the longest lever I think I can pull. I've got other projects but this is the top of the mountain. This is the mission.”The idea of Bit.sv is to provide a way for the makers of specialist content to reach niche audiences and be paid for their work. As Brad explains: “with advertising, you need relatively large audiences. And that's actually pretty difficult to grow for most creators. So the kind of niche content that a lot of people are interested in, the long tail content where a lot of the stuff kind of bubbles up into the mainstream, it's really difficult to make a living doing that kind of thing. Bit.SV is really a platform to incentivise the kind of interesting, weird, fun, cool content that we all really want, but it's difficult to make the time for.”It’s easy to see why creators would like a chance to be paid. But will customers be willing to pay for things they might otherwise expect to see for free? Brad is confident: “the content just has to be better. It has to be better than anything you can get anywhere online for free.” Finding those niche markets is going to be key: “so if you're a yoga teacher, not just doing yoga, but yoga for programmers who spend ten hours a day at the computer. Putting things in people's language adds value for them and people I think are willing to pay for that.”As for the business model of Bit.sv, the creators can decide how much, if any, of their content they want to offer for free and then set up a paywall at whatever price they choose. “We take a 10 percent cut from the paywalls and there's going to be some other services on the site that we'll take a similar cut for.”Brad doesn’t only want to be the business owner, but plans to contribute content to the site too: “I'd also just like to be a creator on Bit.sv, to be kind of Creator Zero and show people how it's done and make an independent living from it myself. I think there's a lot of really interesting opportunities for creators that I'm excited to kind of burst open the doors and let people start playing with it and see what they do.”

Brad Coates and Dr. Diana love to talk about romance – and have been doing it (on the radio) for more than 20 years! Brad’s title for this broadcast is: “Divergent Wants, Needs, Expectations and Desires which Men and Women Each Have for Their Romantic Relationships.”                   As a divorce lawyer, he well knows the three main causes of divorce: sex, money, and family. This show is called LOVE, LUST & LAUGHTER – so, of course we focused on “sex”! As Brad says … in divorce situations there has been either too much sex outside the marriage, or too little within it. “ Relationship ruptures” are first explained by Brad in the form of data: 60% of men, but only 35% of women, say sexual activity is important in their lives. Once again, COMMUNICATION rules! Why are many women not so interested in sex? What about the older woman and divorce? More thought provoking topics!  Brad is the author of “Divorce with Decency” – 5th Edition. www.CoatesandFrey.com

Hello everyone and welcome to episode 52 where today we hear how listeners are applying the content from this podcast in their daily lives. At the end of most podcast episodes I often mention that it would be helpful to hear reactions from listeners to the content of that day’s episode. I am especially interested in how listeners are using what we talk about to transform their relationships into the best they can be. Because when we hear how someone else is putting into practice the ideas and principles we discuss on the show, it can stimulate the rest of us to apply those same ideas and principles - so we can find more joy in our relationships. Today I have 6 brief stories from listeners that will hopefully do just that for you. Help you to find more joy in your relationships. So listen in. The first listener response comes from a missionary who commented on my blog post of January 15, Kindness Before Dawn. In it I tell a brief story that showed how we can encourage people simply by telling them something we remember about them. I asked our readers to think of someone they could encourage by doing the same thing. This particular missionary responded with the simple words, “Thanks John, I got a couple in mind.” Wonderful! Imagine if we all had a “couple in mind” we could encourage. By the way, the blog posts I wrote are what I do in-between podcast seasons. They are sent out through my “Every Wednesday” emails. If you’d like to get on my private email list to receive these, go to johncertalic.com/blog and fill out the form you’ll see there. You can also read all my blog posts there. The 2nd response I want to share with you is from a retired missionary. All caught up on season 2. “Caught up? You’re never behind” Response to episode 48, 1st one in season 3, “Worship Without Words” Recently moved to another part of the country, 1 of more than 30 moves Quote from her email “The Lord continues to be my hope and strength.” We can’t do any of this without Him. Next response is from a young mom with 3 young kids, also writing in about episode 48, "Worship Without Words.” Where I talk about how we worship God through our relationships, not just our singing. Like me, she can’t sing either. “I have the worst singing voice of all time.” Self-conscious about it Quote from her email about how freeing it is to worship with our relationships A 4th response comes from a seasoned missionary in response to episode 49, “"Sacrifice in Relationships.” It’s a beautiful illustration of the 3 relationships Paul describes in Romans 12, our relationship with God, with our self, and with other people. The Kleenex stuck to the freshly washed clothes Interrupts her plans Asks God “so what’s the lesson?” Quote the rest of her email. Her agenda for the day is interrupted by this nuisance with the Kleenex. It’s irritating, so she asks God, “What’s the lesson here” She recognizes the self-gratification she’s seeking in being compassionate to her neighbor She calls upon the Lord to help her set aside this motive, for the greater good of making the Lord the one who shines in this story, not her. What great self-awareness! Next up is from another missionary about the same episode 49, we’ll call her “Tina.” She writes, I love what you said, “A relationship without sacrifice isn’t really a relationship.” Then she goes on to say, Seems it’s usually the people who are doing the sacrificing that are the ones investing in the relationship. And too many times the receiver (the one not sacrificing) doesn’t think there’s anything “wrong” with the relationship. Know what I mean.” This could be a whole podcast episode in itself. I can feel where Tina’s coming from. These one-sided relationships are worse than no relationship at all. We hope one day the person not sacrificing will realize they are all about taking, with no interest in giving, and then change. But sadly, that rarely happens. And when you as the one who sacrifices sees things for what they are, it can be terribly lonely. Then the question becomes, what do we do with our loneliness? How does God want us to deal with this? How are we to live with the “takers” in our life? We’ll deal with this in a future episode. Well on that happy note, here’s the last response I want to share from one of our listeners. It comes to us from Brad, about my January 8th blog post, “Trying to Stop this in 2020.” Specifically about my desire to stop answering the “Hi, how are you doing?” question with “Fine.” You remember what “F.I. N.E.” stands for don’t you? Feelings Inside Not Expressed. Brad is a recently retired carpet distributor, and wrote this: [Read his email , Shaw-mazing, Shaw-some, Shaw-tastic] Some on our staff are adapting this when people ask how we are doing: Me: “I’m John-top of the world! How about you?” Fran, our receptionist: “Fran-tastic” Sean, our men’s locker room attendant: “Sean-some” Terry, Carol’s husband and our sound engineer: “I’m Terri-ific!” Rex, our doorman: “Rex-cellent!” As Brad said. “I would usually get a smile or a laugh.” Humor has a way of breaking down barriers and bringing in a little relational sunshine into our lives. In my headhunting days, when I was trying to recruit someone for a particular search assignment I was working on, I would often hear, “Nah, I’m not interested in that job. I’m pretty happy where I’m at.” I would then sometimes respond with, “Would you like to be happier?” People would sometimes chuckle, and no one ever changed their mind, but that was okay. It added a little levity to both of our days. Here’s what I learned today. Here’s what struck me The relationship principles we’re dealing with in this podcast have all different kinds of applications, some I never would have thought of. It encourages and motivates me to try what others are doing to find joy in their relationships. If you forget everything else, here’s the one thing I hope you remember from today’s episode. Our show in a sentence It’s encouraging to hear what other people are doing to transform their relationships into the best they can be. When I pay attention to how other people work at transforming their relationships, it gives me hope that maybe I can improve mine. Here are a few ideas for what you can do in response to today’s show. I say this just about every week, but I would love to hear how you’re using the content of the podcast in your relationships. Our other listeners would too, because we can learn from each other - as I hope you have today in hearing from other listeners. You can share your thoughts in the “Leave a Reply” box at the bottom of the show notes. Or you can send them to me in an email to john@caringforothers.org. Closing I hope your thinking was stimulated by today’s show, to both reflect and to act. So that you will find the joy God intends for you through your relationships. Because after all, You Were Made for This. Now for Our Relationship Quote of the Week Hope has two beautiful daughters. Their names are anger and courage: anger at the way things are, and courage to see that they do not remain the way they are. — Augustine of Hippo (theologian for parts of the 4th and 5th centuries) That’s all for today. See you next week. Bye for now.

Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness have written a couple great books together. First, they gave us Peak Performance. Then The Passion Paradox.   Today we’re going to talk about one of the central themes of The Passion Paradox. (Tomorrow we’ll chat about some goodness from Peak Performance.)   So…   Passion.   It’s AWESOME!   Except when it isn’t.   Enter: The Passion Paradox.   As Brad and Steve put it: “Mindlessly living with a passion can be extremely harmful and destructive. Mindfully living with a passion can be the key to a life well lived.”   They tell us that psychologists differentiate two types of passion by calling the unhealthy kind “Obsessive Passion” and the healthy kind “Harmonious Passion.”   Obsessive Passion is toxic. It has two primary facets: 1. Focusing too much on extrinsic results (like fame, wealth, achievement, etc.); 2. Being too worried about failure.   Harmonious Passion, on the other hand, gives us a deep sense of joy. Whereas the toxic passion is focused on the pursuit of extrinsic rewards, the healthy passion is focused on intrinsic drivers.   As Brad and Steve put it: “Enter harmonious passion: a feeling that emerges when you are wrapped up in something primarily for the joy of the activity, when your engagement is not merely a means to an end but rather an end in itself. Harmonious passion manifests mainly from activities that are freely chosen without contingencies; when you do something because you enjoy it, not because it offers potential rewards, and not to avoid negative repercussions.    Not every moment of harmonious passion is necessarily pleasing, but overall, it is deeply fulfilling. It aligns closely with the ancient Greek notion of eudaimonia, or a kind of happiness that results not from overwhelming pleasure but from striving to meet one’s full potential by engaging in activities that one considers meaningful.    In the 1970s, the late psychologist and humanist philosopher Erich Fromm wrote of something similar, which he called productive activity, where happiness isn’t related to the attainment of possession or rewards but rather to ‘the process of ever growing aliveness . . . for living as fully as one can is so satisfactory that concern for what one might or might not attain has little chance to develop.’    The great paradox, however, is that although external achievement is never a primary goal of harmonious passion, when you become completely immersed in what you’re doing for the joy of the activity itself, it is often a by-product. Those who focus most on success are least likely to achieve it. Those who focus least on success, and focus on the process of engaging in their craft instead, are most likely to achieve it.”   That’s Today’s +1.   First: Shout out for eudaimonia. :)   Second: Pop quiz: How’s YOUR passion?   Here’s to the Harmonious variety in which we seek mastery and experience the joys of mindfully embracing our passion—while letting the outcomes take care of themselves.

Tamara K. Anderson interviews Brad Neufeld on the Stories of Hope in Hard Times podcast. Brad has hit many rock bottom moments in that have put him on a path to mentor troubled teens. He also shares life lessons learned in hard times.Brad J. Neufeld: The American Dream Falls ApartBrad’s BioBrad was born in Bakersfield, California and lived there until he was 13 years old.Moved to a very small town in Alabama where he worked on a 4,000-acre soybean farm.Moved to Utah and supported himself through high school.Married to Charlotte for almost 32 years, and has 6 children and 7 grandchildrenProfessionally—migrant worker, to trucker, to being the founder and President of Affinity Guidance Services, Inc.Developed the Positive Self-Management™ Learning System, the Winning Mindset Series, the Ultimate Self-Worth Workshop Series, and others.Over 30 years of experience in assisting others with overcoming personal challenges and helping them succeed with their own personal goals and desires. His passion is to help people discover their own self-worth, talents and value, and create for themselves success filled lives.Brad’s Story of Going from Gangs in California to Being SuccessfulHe lived in Bakersfield, California growing up and was often beat up, so he got really good at running, but that got old. Finally as he reached his teens he began to wonder if he should join a gang to get some protection. Just as he was deciding this he came home to find that his family was packing and moving–that night!Their family drove across the country and ended up in Alabama living in a trailer. After a few months his parents decided to go back to California to clean up their mess and Brad said he didn’t want to go back. They had come to such a small town where everyone left their keys in their car and their windows open at night. It was such a contrast and Brad didn’t want to leave and go back to gangs. So, he stayed with their friends Frank and Marlene Crabtree, but he had to support himself, even though he was 13-years-old, so he could make payments on their trailer. So, he worked on the Crabtree soybean farm making $1.85 an hour so he could stay in Alabama. He loved his time in Alabama and stayed there for two and a half years until his family moved to Utah, and Mr. Crabtree said he should probably join his family. So he went to Utah, graduated from high school, served a mission, got married, started working as a trucker and also got into sales which earned him a good living. The American Dream Falls ApartBrad felt he was living the American dream. He bought a home, a car, and had a wife and a couple of kids–and then the world seemed to drop out from under him. After working for the frozen food company and being one of their top sales people for several years, his boss called him in and split his sales territory in half. Brad went from being on top of the world, to losing his house, car, and living in his in-laws unfinished basement in 9 months. This was devastating to him. He started having a hard time getting out of bed in the morning. Brad finally went to see a doctor who told him he was depressed and gave him some medication.Brad went through several years trying different things, visiting psychiatrists and getting psychologists and they tweaked his meds, but nothing seemed to help.Considering SuicideAfter struggling for two years, Brad decided he was going to give up. He prayed and he told God, “I’m done. I don’t want to do this anymore,” and made a plan to end it all.Just at this moment of great despair a little voice inside of him said, “Give it one more shot.” So, he decided he would study everything he could for the next 6 months and see if it made any difference.During that 6 months of studying and he found options and avenues he could pursue. This began changing him. He realized a lot of his depression that due to people relations and abandonment issues. He figured out what people’s true needs were (including his own). After that he made a commitment to start teaching the principles he was learning and was then able to thank God for letting him go through that dark period of his life.Volunteering Opportunity Opens New DoorsBrad began volunteering at the Utah Boys Ranch (now Westridge Academy). This was a residential treatment center for troubled teens.Brad began going out there and talking to the teens and playing football with them. After volunteering there for 6 months, a therapist approached him and told him to stop talking to the boys because he was messing up their treatment plan. He didn’t even know what a treatment plan was!Shortly thereafter a different therapist approached him and also told him to stop talking to the boys. He said, “What am I saying? All I’m doing is answering their questions.”For example the boys would tell Brad that when they got home they were going to run away from home and go live with their friend. Brad simply spoke to them from experience–“Listen, your family is the only stable thing you have. Friends come and go. Go home, get right with your family.” He was speaking to them as a friend, from personal experience. The therapist told him “This kid tells me that you’re helping him more than I am.”Wheels began to turn in Brad’s mind, “Maybe all this happened to me for a reason.” He decided maybe this was what he was meant to do–help troubled teens. So, he decided to go back to college.Attending CollegeBrad already had a couple of kids and was making $48,000 per year when he found out a psychologist with a masters degree would get a starting pay at $23,000 per year. So, financially it didn’t make a lot of sense for him to go back to school but it was what he was feeling pushed towards doing. As he took classes, he realized that kids were different than when he was younger. When he got paddled when he was younger, he stopped doing the thing that got him paddled. But the teens he was dealing with now were much more stubborn and resilient. Spanking them didn’t work or sway them at all–if they were going to do something, they would still figure out a way to do it.As Brad studied the more modern teens, he realized they didn’t fit with all the diagnosis that he was studying about clinically.EpiphanyAt this point, Brad heard a talk from one of his spiritual leaders that really helped him look at teens a lot differently. This leader told him that the new generation had more determination than any generation in history. He also explained that they need that determination to get through. This talk validated Brad’s thoughts, but what was he supposed to do with it?The words of this leader answered that question as well: Don’t beat it out of them! They need that determination to make it. If you take them by the hand, lead them, guide them and show them the way, they will follow. This was enough for Brad to set the psychology aside and really ponder what this meant for him.The Survey That Changed EverythingBrad gathered at team of people and they then surveyed over 1,000 teens and asked them one question:What do you want from adults? After they got passed the “I just want them to leave me alone,” and got to the core of what they REALLY wanted, Brad and his team discovered some amazing results.Survey ResultsWhat teens really want from adults:To know that they are loved. They want someone to look up to.Teens want someone they can trust. They want to be adventurous.Teens also want structure and consistency. They also want validation.Brad put all these things into a model called, “The Ten Things Youth Really Want” which he is currently writing a book about.CAGE (Community Awareness Gang Education) Task ForceBrad began speaking to teens in high schools about gangs. While there, a woman approached who invited him to join the CAGE task force to help them keep teens out of gangs in the St. George area.CAGE wanted to know WHY teens wanted to join gangs since they were so dangerous. The reason Brad considered joining a gang was for protection when he was a teenager, but he felt there was more to it that he needed to discover. While he was brainstorming and pondering about why teens join gangs, he happened to glance over at his paper he was writing about the 10 Things Youth Really Want, and it hit him–those 10 things were the same things that gangs provided–ALL 10 of them!So teens can either get it from the home environment or from the gang environment. Brad quickly realized that what people said about this “battle” being for the hearts and minds of our children is real.Being the father of 6 children, this hit home to Brad, but unfortunately they’re his kids and don’t want to listen to dad. He has even had to spend the money to send his kids to counselors so they can figure out that the advice is the same coming from a counselor as it is coming from dad.Inner StruggleAt this point Brad was a public speaker, and was teaching the Winning Mindset to people and was quite successful. As he did follow-up 6 months later, he found that people hadn’t changed at all–even though they were so pumped up from his workshop. This really began to eat at him because he wanted to make a real difference with people, and so he began looking for how he should pivot.Western Region Youth CouncilAt this point of dissatisfaction, Brad was presented with the opportunity to work with the Western Region Youth Council. They wanted to increase the effectiveness of their program, and they wanted him to help with mentoring hand in hand with the therapists they already had.Brad’s team had tremendous success with this model where they would help the teens implement and actually DO what their therapists were telling them to do.For example, if the teens were supposed to go talk to their teacher and they didn’t know what to say, Brad would help them figure that out. If they still didn’t go, then Brad would take them down there and talk to their teacher with them. So, he and his group were really making a difference.A Success StoryOne of the 14-year-old girls they were working with was really ambitious and had big dreams, but she would never do any of the assignments that they gave her. After a few months without her acting on anything, Brad decided to stop by her home to see her. As he visited with this girl, he could tell something was wrong. She came out and spoke to him on the porch and then her mom came out, and she was obviously intoxicated. As he was invited into the home he saw two guys passed out on the couch that were probably doing things they shouldn’t have been doing.Brad thought, “no wonder she is struggling to succeed.”Brad asked her mom, “Do you want to change your situation?” and she replied that she did. So, he told her he’d come back the next day when she was sober and make a plan. So, they made a plan to get mom into treatment and get her the help that she needed. As the mom turned her life around, this girl was then able to grow and do some really great things.In-Home Portion AddedSo after the success with this girl, they began an in-home portion of the program. By doing this and going in without judgment and finding out how the parents wanted to raise their kids, Brad and his team were able to then support them and get them the help to be successful in their homes.Success & FailureThey had about a 93% success rate with about 1600 teens–getting them through high school and into some sort of career or post-secondary education. After building this successful model, Brad felt fulfilled and was happy that they were finally making a difference. But the program didn’t continue. Now what? Brad wondered. He moved his family from St George to Tooele, Utah to start an inpatient program themselves. After a year of working on that, the guy that owned the property had a heart-attack. He lived but told Brad afterwards that he just didn’t have the energy to finish building this new facility. And Brad hit rock bottom again. “Now what,” he wondered. But he knew he had discovered some really effective techniques and he couldn’t let it go.Affinity Guidance ServicesThis was when Brad stated Affinity Guidance Services. He was able to push through the despair of things not working out and make a difference in the world.Advice for Parents of Teens Who Are StrugglingParents want a few things for their kidsThey want them to be safe. They want them to be happy. In most cases they want more for them than they had.A parent’s drive is to provide that, and we think we know better for their life than they do.It is important for parents to realize that maybe their kids know what they are supposed to do with their life (even though they don’t have the experience yet). So, they need to get the experience. For example: If they say they want to be a rap artist, let them try and see if they can do what it takes. To be a rapper they will need to work for 2-3 years for free to get their message out there and getting recordings done, and they will probably need to have a part time job to support themselves. They will usually figure out on their own that they really don’t want to be a rapper after all.Advice to parents: If you try to stand in their way, you will get nothing but friction. Get rid of the fight! Ask them what they want.Build RapportThe best thing you can do is build a rapport with your children. Find out what they want and help them with that. Stop trying to force them to do specific things and get to know them.If you are still struggling with your teen, what do you do then?Ask for HelpParents see their kids as a reflection of them, and they don’t want anyone knowing what is going on in their home–this is human nature. You are dealing with God’s most complex creatures and they have free will. These kids want things that are different than you probably want for them.If your child needs to go to a hospital, it is okay. So, ask for help.Brad has had to send his kids to counselors. There is a magic to the third party. Often counselors teach the exact same thing that you are trying to teach in the home, but the kids need to hear it from a third party before it clicks.Final Tip Dealing With TeensBrad gave up a long time ago trying to find techniques that work with teens because each teen is different. The key here is to have a consistent structure in your home. They have a model they use that they call “Parenting with flexible consistency.”The important thing here is that you do what you say you are going to do. You have to follow through on what you say you are going to do. So, take the time and decide what the consequence is going to be before you talk to your teen about it. If you don’t follow through, that is where you lose trust with your kids.“Consistency is the key.”Health IssuesBack in 2008, Brad started having these really bad headaches and pressure behind his left eye. He visited his doctor and they prescribed him muscle relaxers and said it was probably due to stress. But the headaches didn’t get any better. He tried to relax, but then his brother died, and the headaches were still pounding. He returned to his doctor and said, “Something is wrong.”The doctor simply thought he had a really bad migraine. It was Friday, so the doctor gave him a shot of something that was supposed to knock him out all weekend.Well, the shot didn’t make him sleep all weekend and by Monday he returned to his doctor who immediately wanted to send him to the hospital. Brad fought him, because they didn’t even have insurance at the time, but he eventually went once his doctor threatened him. There is Something in Your HeadAfter four hours of testing the doctors came back and said, “There is something in your head.” But they didn’t know what it was. Brad still wasn’t worried at this point. The doctors finally told him, Brad, you have got to get up to the University of Utah hospital. We just don’t know what this is, and you need to get that figured out.He refused to go by ambulance and so his wife took him up to the University of Utah hospital after stopping at home for some clothes. Brad still wasn’t worried. When they went to the ER there were like 150 people waiting and Brad felt frustrated because he didn’t want to be there all night. He wanted to get checked out and go home.No sooner had he sat down then they called his name. That was when he got scared. The doctors were waiting for him, and told him they were going to have to drill some holes in his head to figure out what was happening.Losing His EyesightSo, Brad was in surgery for 4 hours. When he came out of it, his eyesight was gone. When he asked the doctors what had happened, they told him they had to cut some of his skull out because there was an infection or brain abscess up there. It was actually a strep virus and it was growing and pushing his brain forward. He then asked, “Am I going to get my sight back?” There was silence. He asked again and the doctor simply said, “Brad, we don’t know.”Brad hit a low and had a good cry. He muttered prayers,“What am I doing wrong? Why am I going through this? Why does this have to happen to me?”“God is in charge,” was the only answer that seemed to come to mind. He just had to repeat that over and over and over. It was the only thing that brought him comfort. He was discouraged because he was to the point where he was finally building his business back up when he was hit by this HUGE blow!By the end of the week he could kind of tell who was standing in front of him (if he knew them), but everything was still blurry. So, they sent him home from the hospital, but he had to return to the hospital two times per day for a shot of antibiotics because the strep infection was everywhere in his body. The doctors didn’t tell him until later that if he didn’t make it through that initial phase that he would have died. They just didn’t know if his immune system was strong enough to fight such a huge infection.ComplicationsAfter being home for two weeks, the Brad got this really bad headache and the back of his neck got really tight and he began vomiting. He was in so much pain! They had to call an ambulance and they took him back to the hospital in Tooele. The pain was so bad that Brad asked them to kill him because nothing helped. Nothing could knock him out. Nothing would touch the pain. They finally gave him some morphine and asked if he was still in pain. Brad answered, “Yes, but I don’t care.”Ah, the beauty of modern medicine!Spinal MeningitisBrad traveled by ambulance back to the University of Utah where he was diagnosed with Spinal Meningitis. The infection in his brain had gone down into his spine. This was so painful and no pain killers would help. Brad couldn’t move his head at all. If he moved even a quarter of an inch he felt like a huge shock of pain.He had 5 IVs hooked up to him and began making little baby steps of progress. One day he was able to move his head right and left just a little without pain. The next day he could move it front and back a little. Finally the infection moved down into his low back for 7 days, and then they were finally able to take him off of all the medication.Only then did he find out how precarious his situation was.Lessons Learned From ChallengesLesson #1 God is in chargeBrad just said that over and over. It was his mantra. It is important to learn to trust that God’s way is better than ours.Lesson #2 Pray SpecificallyBrad also learned to pray and ask specific questions. For example when he was in so much pain, Brad would pray, “What can I do to alleviate this pain.” The thought would come, “Shift your left hip.” And he would and it would lessen the pain. There were a couple of times when the answer was, “No. You are just going to have to endure it, but I’ll help you through it.” And Brad would feel these warm arms wrap around him and he knew that everything would be okay.“God will help us with anything no matter how small it is if we will just humble ourselves and ask.”Lesson #3 Earthly AngelsBrad was just getting his business going when all of these health challenges hit. He was discouraged and prayed to God telling him how he had lost his sight and was worried about he could provide for his family. The feeling he got was, “Brad, I’m right here. Everything is going to be okay.”Amazingly, other people did more work on Brad’s business while he was flat on his back. This was a miracle! He had other therapists volunteer to help and see his clients for him.Brad realized God was right, everything was going to be okay and that things would work out in God’s timing, not his.Lesson #4 Ask for What You NeedOne time when they were struggling, Brad was praying for more money. It was around Christmas time and he knew he had money coming in about 3 weeks but they had no gas in the car, no food in the pantry.Brad had a prompting, “Tell God what you need.”He and his wife then make a list of everything they needed to make it the next three weeks. They decided that if they had $100 they could make it through. So, Brad prayed for $100.Five minutes later there was a knock at the door. His wife’s best friend was there and she handed them an envelope saying, “I had a prompting I am supposed to bring you this and don’t you dare say no.” In the envelope, they found $100 dollars.Lesson # 5–Pride Can Be Needing Help and Not Asking For ItAt a dark time in his life, Brad was putting on a face like everything was okay, when really he was falling apart inside. His Bishop called him in and said, “You need to tell me something and we are not leaving until you do.” Finally Brad broke down and told him how much he was struggling financially. The bishop surprised him and asked, “Brad, what is pride?” Brad responded that pride was when people look down on others and kind of turn their nose up.The bishop then explained that pride can also be when you need help and you don’t ask for it. Sometimes we are incapable of answering our own prayers and that is when God sends other people. It is important to humbly accept gifts and blessings during tough times. You don’t have to pay people back. Simply say, “Thank you.”“God answers your prayers through other people. Get on your knees and thank Heavenly Father, because He is the one who brought it to you.”Lesson #6 ASK: What Can I Learn from This? After years of experience wondering why God was punishing him, Brad listened to a motivational speaker who taught him a new idea. He said, “Life teaches us lessons, and the lessons are going to get harder and harder until we learn what the universe has in store for us.” Brad chose to call this higher power God.This speaker also said that once we learn the lesson, the trial disappears. So, naturally Brad wanted to test this theory. So, the next time a situation presented itself, Brad coached himself to not get angry about the situation and ask, “What do you want me to learn from this?” Then listen to the promptings God sends you. This brought him more peace of mind because he was focusing on the journey and not on the issue.Lesson # 7 Act on PromptingsWe get promptings all day long, but we often shrug them off saying, “Naw, I don’t want to do that.” And we just don’t act on these thoughts and feelings God gives us.Brad describes promptings as a “random thought that pops into my head.” Brad will often pause after he gets a thought and ask himself the following questions:Is this just me thinking or is this a prompting? Is this something I need right now?If I do this will it make a difference in my life?Brad thinks about these questions trying to feel out if it feels good. Then he asks God, “Father I’ve been given this prompting, is this something I should do?” If he gets a warm feeling, then he goes and does it.Favorite Bible VersesPsalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God.”Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength.”“God is in charge. He sees things that I don’t see.”Brad has also come to love some scriptural references about Jesus Christ who has experienced everything–being betrayed and accused (even though He didn’t do anything wrong) because he can relate to this in his life.He also enjoys the story of Job and remembers reading it once and relating with the idea that Job had his crops and cattle taken away. Then he realized that Job had boils but Brad hadn’t so he told God, “Bring on the boils.”I reminded him that he kind of had a boil in his brain, so he can check that off now:).Recommended BooksBibleDr. Wayne Dyer’s “You’ll See it When You Believe it.”Tip: Pray about what you should read because there are so many different opinions out there. First figure out what you believe, and then read books that support and validate your beliefs.Brad spent the first 8 years of his career chasing the quick fix to help people change their lives in one or two counseling sessions. After 8 years he realized that we don’t learn and change that way. We learn and grow “line upon line” and “precept upon precept” (Isaiah 28:10). That is just how God teaches us. So, take the time, be patient, learn it and make it part of your life.Shareable QuotesContact BradWebsite: www.bradjneufeld.comHis Company: Affinity Guidance ServicesThis is a day-treatment facility for troubled teens. Arguably, the most renowned agri-broking business in Australia is Robinson-Sewell Partners, which has experienced significant growth since its inception in October 2010. In this interview, co-founder Brad Sewell takes us behind-the-scenes where he shares several insights that have enabled them to build their preeminent reputation and run a highly profitable brokerage. Part of their strategy for success including reconciling their numbers, every month, without fail.  Not just their appointments, submissions and settlements. They also review their operating expenses, total revenue and are heavily focused on their profit. As Brad explains, one part of producing healthy profit results is to be cost-conscious whereby their operating costs are markedly less than the industry average.  To grow their footprint, the business has recently taken on several co-directors, under a Pty/Ltd model, whereby each new broker operates a separate entity under the brand with the view of servicing more agri-clients and for the business to perform. To complement their business model, Brad and Ian have also built strong relationships with their lender business-partners so they can help co-deliver efficient lending solutions for clients. Jefferson discusses the ins and outs of how he found his most recent manager for his new park.   Key Takeaways: [1:30] Jefferson and Brad recently made an acquisition in Florida. The park came with the manager, and although the guys usually keep the manager, this one unfortunately did not fit the bill. [4:15] In fact, some of the manager’s billing was a bit of a red flag. [6:45] The manager was also very unprofessional and sent some nasty emails. [8:40] Jefferson sent out a flyer notifying the residents in their 80 space park that they were hiring, but only 5 responded to it, and only 1 of them seemed qualified. [9:40] The ad Jefferson placed in Craigslist pulled around 40 applicants. [11:05] By this point, Jefferson already knew he was not going to be working with the current manager. [13:20] Former park owners will try to encourage you to hire their manager, because of course, they often think very highly of them. Jefferson recommends that you cut through the noise and do what you think is best. [19:45] Jefferson honestly has no idea what the manager was doing. She was never around! "Branding is complicated when you try to define it." If there was an ongoing theme of the On Brand podcast, this week's guest hit the nail on the head. Of course, your brand is more than your logo but how do you organize the words and language around your story and communicate that internally. Brad Flowers co-founded and leads a language and story-focused branding firm, Bullhorn. We talked about all of that and more on this week’s On Brand podcast.   About Brad Flowers Brad Flowers co-founded Bullhorn in 2008. A graduate of the University of North Texas, Brad’s degree in Literature serves him well in his strategy and language work during the branding process. It does not serve him well in his operational work, which is primarily informed by his rugged real-world experience and self-taught MBA. He is also an avid cycler – for commuting and for competition. He co-founded and currently serves on the board of a non-profit community bike shop called Broke Spoke. Spreading the good word. Episode Highlights What does Bullhorn do? "We're a branding company but really people hire us to help them talk about their brand." Unlike other more visually focused firms, Bullhorn starts with words and stories. In the end, they provide a brand manual. But it's not the standard style guide you might expect. A coffee table book for your brand. While Bullhorn provided the digital assets most expect with a style guide or brand manual, they also include a printed document that's more aspirational. "It's like a coffee table book for your brand. Employees can read it. It can be used for onboarding." "Your culture is a culmination of your brand voice." As Brad reminded us, there's no one-size-fits-all approach for brand voice.  How can you maintain a consistent brand voice internally without encouraging your team to talk like robots? "It really depends on the organization. The culture." Flowers went on to share a story about a more formal, hyperbolic client that needed help with their brand voice. Instead of more jargon — that would almost certainly lead them to sound more robotic — they provided a visual inspiration in the form of a photo of Paul Newman playing ping-pong. (I know, I said I'd put it in the show notes but I can't find a creative commons pic.) What brand has made Brad smile recently? After reading Kondo's best-selling book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying, Brad set out to find the objects that gave him joy. His Patagonia fleece fit the bill. And also provided a textbook example of a brand that's made him smile many times through the years. To learn more, go to the Bullhorn Creative website. *Inspired by a lengthy email exchange with my childhood friend, former podcast guest and ageless wonder athlete, Dave Kobrine (age 59 with a recent biological age result of 47!), I offer a two-part show discussing major health and fitness insights and reflections over the past five years.* You’ll enjoy hearing about our best practices, especially Dave’s legendary morning routine, and you’ll hear tips and tricks you can easily implement covering eating, exercise, mindset, and lifestyle topics. In part one, I detail some of the concessions I’ve made to chronological aging, like making sure that both my diet and my workouts are evolving in alignment with my body’s own natural evolution, as well as committing to a routine that focuses on flexibility and mobility for injury prevention, and much more! Overall, looking at my pattern from 2017-2021, I have to say that I feel much much better loosening the purse strings and eating healthy nutritious food and recently focusing on animal food-emphasis. In 2017, as I was working on the Keto for Life book, I went pretty hard core, eating 50g of carbs a day or less, and trying to do sprint workouts and weight workouts. Truthfully, I felt like crap frequently, for 3 days here, 4 days there….Plus, maybe the fact that I was also going through a divorce and my daughter was struggling did not help matters as these personal events were also pretty fatigue-provoking. But reflecting on how I felt back in 2017, I truly feel even better now than I did then, regardless of the fact that I am obviously older. My perspective on a few things, like the intensity of my workout sessions, fasting frequency, and my amount of carb intake, has shifted and evolved. I’ve dialed back on the explosive, intense workouts sessions, as they can be very strenuous and can take too long to recover from. When you add a super-strict keto diet on top of it all, that’s quite a bit of stress on your system, and can lead to a pattern of crashing and burning and feeling generally lousy that I personally experienced. As 5 years have passed from age 51-56, some aging observations are taking hold. The main one is margin of error for injury, soreness or fatigue and extended recovery from overdoing it. Like I said, in your 20s, you overdo it for a few days or miss some sleep or jet lag travel and bounce back quickly - or not as quickly as some people boast. I was able to get trashed in my 20s and took weeks to recover from extreme triathlon training. But, even in my 30s and 40s, I could still bust out to soccer practice or high jump pits and take a few leaps. Check out an older YouTube video, Brad Kearns Barefoot High Jump 5’0 ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g064adzlY-U ) , which captures a day when I found some pits while driving by and decided to do a high jump (even though I had forgotten my shoes!). The difference between the ages of 50 and 56 is serious. At 51, I cleared 5’5, which is hard to imagine today. The same with running a 60 second 400m at age 50. Now, I get bouts of panic breathing after doing a 200m or 400m too quickly at practice or at altitude. 3 years ago, I did a couple 6 minute miles, and now, I doubt I could come close. In many ways, I am fitter and have better injury prevention in place thanks to my morning routine. I guess it is true that with age, you lose explosiveness and some adaptability. One good thing though, is that my aging coincides with my reduction of effort in endurance activities, because I think it can be unhealthy for the 50+ crowd. At least, not very often. So maybe the best approach to aging is to reduce your frequency of big efforts and work hard at being more consistent with your basic fitness efforts. I also never did anything resembling a morning routine until after age 50 and now it’s a godsend, keeping me out of both trouble and pain. Maybe I needed it far less in my younger years, but, at the time of recording this, I’m also at the six-month mark of dealing with a minor knee injury that just keeps on lingering. And while I am happy to report it’s finally going away, it’s interesting to look back on being in my 20s and how running into a slight issue with my back or shoulder would take merely a few weeks to go away, the most severe taking six weeks to completely heal. It really just reinforces the importance of maintaining and strengthening your flexibility and mobility (check out my morning routine video for flexibility and mobility here ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IPPwBc3GLw ) !) to minimize injury risk, and also just elevate the platform from which you perform all workouts. I also touch on an interesting article from Dr. Shawn Baker, who says that having greater androgen receptor density can allow you to actually thrive on lower levels of testosterone. But how do you get greater androgen receptivity? By performing strength-training exercises and fasting. Androgen receptors are also particularly dense in your lower extremities, so doing full-body, functional lower-body exercises, like squats, leg presses, and deadlifts, will help increase androgen receptor density in those areas. I wrap up by giving an update on how my thoughts have changed when it comes to fasting frequency, and share where I’m currently at with the carnivore diet, which has been truthfully, fantastic. It’s been amazing seeing just how much my digestion and overall health have vastly improved, all from putting less to zero emphasis on plants and focusing entirely on nutrient dense animal organs and protein. Even my workouts have been positively affected by the change I’ve made to my diet. And, I’ll add that Mark Sisson, king of his infamous Big Ass Salad, has lately admitted to gravitating towards a steak or other protein-based dishes instead of his staple salad for lunch these days. As Robb Wolf says, if you want to live a long life, lift more weights and eat more protein! *TIMESTAMPS:* Brad talks about how blood testing is estimating your age. He was thrown for a loop when his results came to him. [01:30] There is much you can do to optimize testosterone without using drugs. [03:02] You can develop androgen receptor density by doing strength training and also fasting. [06:04] The ancestral health movement has grown like crazy. [08:42] As Brad is aging, he feels his margin of error for injury, lingering fatigue etc. is taking much longer to recover. [12:32] Brad insists that his early morning routine will help him minimize injury for the rest of his life. [14:03] Maybe check physical therapy first before you go under the knife. [15:34] As you age, you need to tone down some of the efforts and be aware of injury prevention. [19:06] If you get an injury, it is important to rest it and then rest it some more. Be patient. [24:51] Carnivore diet has been very popular lately. There are still many ways to include carbs that are needed. [26:38] You want to eat the most nutrient dense food. Vegetables might not be the best for you! [29:49] If you want to live a long life, lift more weights and eat more protein. *This show covers an incredibly rich and informative article on* *DrJackKruse.com* ( https://jackkruse.com/ ) *dealing with how our circadian clock affects our hormone function and all aspects of our biology. We’ll travel around the 24-hour clock and enjoy 21 different insights about hormone and metabolic function from extreme biohacker and anti-aging expert Dr. Jack Kruse.* This guy is WAY out there at the extreme edge of health and that’s what makes him someone worth checking into. I understand that he has his critics and second guessers, but he is clearly highly advanced in his thinking, scientific research and life experience as a neurosurgeon. In this episode, he shares how his life turned in 2007 when he injured his knee surgery at 357 lbs and decided to get healthy. He started studying like crazy, reading through thousands of research articles, and landed in the area that claimed, “Obesity is not the result of too many calories, not enough exercise or living a slothful existence. Obesity begins in the eye because of an altered spectrum of light.” No one understands how *artificial light is the driving force behind modern neolithic diseases tied to mitochondrial dysfunction.* That is Dr. Kruse’s sole focus now: he aims to teach people the world of quantum biology. Dr. Kruse lost 133 pounds in one year and started curing patients at his Nashville clinic to eventually develop his “Leptin Rx Reset,” *a protocol that acts as a brain surgery without ever using a blade* , completely *rewiring the hypothalamus* by aligning with our natural circadian rhythms and mastering the “timing” of our evolutionary blueprint. His findings include: * The timing of when you eat is more important than what you eat: seeing sunlight in the morning is critical, * Snacking or eating “small meals” every 2-3 hours as commonly advocated by conventional medicine all but guarantees life-long obesity. * Anyone can lose massive amounts of weight without ever counting a calorie. * Rigorous cardio exercises (like long distance running or chronic cardio routines) leads to stem cell reduction and shaves years off the end of your life. * Eating fats, which conventional medicine told us to shun, is ideal for Optimal Health. We will have to work through a ton of scientific terms and concepts, but my goal is to do my best to distill the message into *simple and actionable takeaways that can improve your health* as I go through 21 separate insights from this comprehensive article published at Dr. Jack Kruse’s longevity-focused website ( https://jackkruse.com/cold-thermogenesis-7/ ) , taking you through a 24-hour day. *First, ask yourself: How does your day begin, and how does it evolve?* Here goes the story of the modern “warm adapted” human circadian cycle. Oh yeah, Dr. Kruse is a huge cold exposure enthusiast and takes his ice baths for up to an hour! We’ll learn about how cold therapy can positively impact metabolism and health, especially for post-menopausal women who feel like they’ve been tripping out! You will hear a lot about a couple of hormones, so I want to define them right out the gate: *Leptin* , a hormone released from the fat cells located in adipose tissues, sends signals to the hypothalamus in the brain. This particular hormone helps regulate and alter long-term food intake and energy expenditure, not just from one meal to the next. *Prolactin* is most commonly known as what prompts manuf of breast milk, but has a number of other important metab functions. It also regulates behavior, the immune system, metabolism, reproductive systems, and many different bodily fluids. This makes it a crucial hormone for overall health and well-being, for both men and women. Production of prolactin is controlled by two main hormones: *dopamine and estrogen.* These hormones send a message to the pituitary gland primarily indicating whether to begin or cease the production of prolactin. Dopamine restrains the production of prolactin, while estrogen increases it. Our brain wakes up with a morning surge of *cortisol*. That is what turns our brain on at 6am. *VIP* (vasoactive intestinal peptide) helps do this in long light cycles. VIP is highest at 6am, and lowest at 6pm. *Ghrelin* is also highest in the morning. Ghrelin is a prominent hunger hormone made in the stomach that has a half-life of one hour. Ghrelin sends a signal directly to our pituitary gland and it influences our metabolism. This is why the circadian cycle in the stomach in the morning is critical to optimal health. Kruse talks about the Leptin Rx reset protocol ( https://jackkruse.com/my-leptin-prescription/ ) on his blog. You’ll hear about *leptin* a lot in this story. It’s the prominent satiety, fat-storage hormone, and its main role is to prime you for reproductive fitness — our most basic and important biological drive. When leptin signaling is efficient between the brain and digestive system, you eat an optimal amount of calories. When leptin signaling is compromised due to assorted adverse lifestyle practices, you don’t get the satiety signal and you tend to store fat rather than burn it. I say ‘signaling’ rather than ‘low and high’ because it’s more nuanced than low and high. *Melatonin* secretion increases after four hours of darkness. This allows plasma leptin to enter the hypothalamus, if you are sensitive to its receptor. But, if you are leptin-resistant, this process can no longer occur. Now, onto the 24-hour tour of our circadian rhythm: *1.* Circadian cycles for the obese are dramatically altered compared to non-obese individuals in the morning. For non-obese people, ghrelin is high when cortisol is highest in the early morning. Ghrelin drops fast when food is eaten, too. But for the obese, ghrelin is much lower than expected in the morning. Moreover, once they eat food, ghrelin will stay elevated for an extended amount of time. *This is why* *obesity is an inflammatory brain disorder causing hormonal imbalance*. This happens because of the inflammation associated with the higher leptin levels in the morning in the obese. Melatonin is known to acutely decrease ghrelin (which is great for when you want to go to sleep). *2.* At 6:45am, we will expect to see the sharpest rise in blood pressure in the entire day. This is due to many activated systems in the body getting us ready to fully supply blood to all vital areas to get us motivated to begin our day and search for food. *This period of rapid blood pressure rise is why we see so many cardiac deaths occur in early morning sleep or early wakefulness.* This happens when cortisol is highest. *3.* Sun hits the retina at daybreak, and the photic stimulus begins to shut off the secretion of melatonin from the pineal gland in the brain. Morning sunlight contains mostly IR light at daybreak and as we approach noon, UV light frequencies appear on the skin. When morning sunlight hits your retina and receptors in skin cells throughout your body, the signal travels through the optic nerve to other regions of the brain, including the pineal gland. *The light cue prompts melatonin levels to fall and serotonin and cortisol to spike within 30 minutes of waking.* Adenosine levels decrease steadily as you sleep, and are low when you awaken, increasing alertness. *The adenosine-cortisol-serotonin effect is most effective closest to dawn* , another reason to try to rise with the light of day! *4.* At 7:30AM, usually after an hour of light, melatonin is completely shut off in the brain. *5.* At 8:30AM, the gut has been awakened and peristalsis becomes more vigorous and bowel movements getting rid of yesterday’s food are very likely. This happens as protons flow to move serotonin sulfated (that means snuffed out, like a battery) by the light of the gut microbiome to get to get to the brainstem to become sulfated melatonin (serotonin converts to melatonin in the evening). Bowel movement is stimulated if food is eaten around this time as well. This is called the *gastrocolic reflex*. Cortisol, aldosterone, and ghrelin are all raised at this time to drive activity, increase our blood pressure and stimulate feeding. This is all yoked to AM sunlight stimulus. It is blocked when we wear clothes or at work in the AM. *6.* Around 9-10AM, we have the highest secretions of the sex steroid hormones in humans and these pulsatile crescendos lead to our highest alertness at around 10AM in our day to allow us to explore our environment. So who knew the VIP time for sex was morning delight? *7.* Our ideal muscle coordination occurs at 2:30PM, which adapts us best to hunt for dinner at this time. An hour later, we see our fastest reaction times develop from our motor systems in our CNS. *8.* At 5PM, humans exhibit their greatest cardiovascular efficiency allowing for maximal exercising or hunting. This also occurs during a period of time when we have our best rates of protein synthesis in our body. *This is why exercise should be optimally done in this window.* *9.* As the sun falls at 6PM, we begin to see a major change in the cardiovascular system about a half hour later. *10.* At 6:30PM, we see our highest blood pressures due to changes in atrial natriuretic factor and antidiuretic hormone (ANF, ADH) in the renin-aldosterone axis. *11.* Once this occurs over the next 30 minutes (7PM), we begin to see a gradual rise in our body temperature as leptin (and IL-6) is released from our fat stores, with agouti’s help, slowly after dinner is eaten to signal the brain about our fat mass and inflammatory status. *Agouti* is a furry little rodent but also a *neuropeptide produced in the brain that has a powerful signaling effect to increase appetite, decrease metabolism and energy expenditure* , which is why it is known as one of the most potent and long lasting appetite stimulators. *12.* For the next two to three hours, leptin levels slowly rise as insulin levels fall. Adiponectin levels also fall during this time frame. These fat hormone signals are what activate the adenosine system in our bodies. Adenosine is created over the course of the day; you start in the AM with low levels, and as they build, high levels of adenosine lead to sleepiness. *13.* Adenosine peaks at 10PM ,and then the circadian clock allows for melatonin secretion after 3-4 hours of total darkness. Serum leptin is rising quickly now (with agouti’s help) as it is released from the fat cells to enter the brain. Agouti is highest at this time of the day, even in a normal person. *14.* As these trends continue, the GI tract is slowly shut down by the circadian clocks and around 11:30PM, bowel movements are shut down for the night. This means that the vagus nerve is quiet. *15.* At midnight, leptin begins to enter the hypothalamus to bind to its receptor - it signals energy reserves (you burn stored energy during the night). In diurnal animals, sleepiness occurs as the circadian element causes the release of the hormone melatonin and a gradual decrease in core body temperature. This drop in temperature is the stimulus to change sulfated serotonin to sulfated melatonin.  This timing is affected by one’s chronotype. *16. It is the circadian rhythm that determines the ideal timing of a correctly structured and restorative sleep episode*. Melatonin, the hormone from the pineal gland, called the “darkness hormone ” is of great importance in the functioning of the SCN - that’s the suprachiasmatic nucleus - located in the hypothalamus. Hypothalamus is the control tower for all hormonal and metabolic functions in the body, regulating body temperature, hunger, important aspects of parenting and attachment behaviours, thirst, fatigue, sleep, and circadian rhythms. SCN is the main arbiter of circadian rhythm in the body. Sunlight hits SCN and the hormonal cascades are kick started. The most important target of melatonin in humans appears to be the SCN, as the SCN contains the highest density for melatonin receptors. A double effect of melatonin in the SCN, namely, an immediate effect and long-term effect, has encouraged its worldwide use against the ill effects of jet lag. This may not be wise to do. As an immediate effect, melatonin is found to suppress neuronal SCN activity toward night time levels. During the daytime, the SCN neurons must run faster than normal.  This is possible because the retina has more DHA in it than the brain.  In terms of long-term effect, melatonin can phase shift and amplify circadian rhythmicity of the SCN. Melatonin application has been found to be useful in synchronizing the endogenous circadian rhythms not only in people who suffer from jet lag, but also in blind individuals, patients with dementia, and in shift workers. *17.* After the 4 hours of darkness, melatonin secretion increases and this allows plasma leptin to enter the hypothalamus, if we are sensitive to its receptor. *If we are leptin resistant, this process can no longer occur.* *18.* Once leptin enters and binds to its receptors, it affects the lateral hypothalamic tracts to immediately send a second messenger signal to the thyroid to signal it to up-regulate thyroid function and efficiency. This is how we can raise our basal metabolic rate when we are leptin sensitive. These coupled events, matched with leptin’s actions peripherally in muscles, occur at the UCP3 sites (these are mitochondrial uncoupling proteins) to burn fat as we sleep at a higher basal metabolic rate. This means electron chain transport does not make ATP as usual. When leptin allows this uncoupling to occur, we make heat (and not energy) from normal metabolism. This means we will burn off our excess calories as pure heat. *This is one reason why the whole ‘calories in and calories out’ argument makes no biological sense once you understand how leptin works.* *Humans are built to burn fat at night, as we sleep to lose excess weight we don’t need.* *19.* The timing of the leptin action is also critical. It usually occurs between 12-3AM, and *is tied to when you last ate and how much darkness your retina (SCN) have seen.* This generally occurs soon after our hypothalamus releases another hormone called prolactin, from our pituitary gland in the brain. *20. The surge of Prolactin* is normally quite large in normal darkness, but is significantly diminished in artificially lit environments after sunset. *The reason is that prolactin release is coordinated with sleep cycles where autophagy is at its highest efficiency and where Growth Hormone is released.* If this is diminished, we generally see lower DHEA levels clinically and higher IL-6 levels on cytokine arrays. This is a measure of uncoupling of sleep from normal metabolism. *I base every bio hack I do on this step in circadian biology because it is the most important.* *21.* *The normal large circadian prolactin surge we should see at around midnight after leptin enters the brain, does not happen if the patient has leptin resistance, sleep apnea, or has eaten food too close (within 3-4 hours) to bedtime.* This blocks leptin’s ability to enter the brain because of insulin spikes. As mentioned above, *this step is usually impaired if you are a post-menopausal female as well.* This is often why older women sleep badly and gain weight they can not seem to lose in the gym, even with a good paleo template and good habits. This is another reason *I am a big advocate for bioidentical hormone optimization in women.* This need is also greatest in women who are warm-adapted. *The need is lowest in the cold-adapted females* because their leptin levels are already low due to the cold. Post-menopausal women who are cold-adapted tend to do amazingly well clinically in most disease parameters in my clinical experience. The main problem they face is that their vanity and dogma keep them from using the cold pathways to become rockstars as they age. Thanks for listening to this journey around the circadian clock, and stay tuned for part 2! *TIMESTAMPS:* In this podcast, Brad talks about the work of Dr. Jack Kruse who believes that obesity is not caused by eating too many calories and not exercising enough. [01:23] Obesity begins in the eye…because of an altered spectrum light. [03:28] The timing of when you eat is more important than what you eat. [04:42] Snacking or eating small meals every two or three hours all but guarantees lifelong obesity. [05:31] People can lose massive amounts of weight without ever counting a calorie. [6:38] Processed carbohydrates are the true culprit and disease driver of the modern diet. [07:37] Leptin is a hormone released from fat cells located in the adipose tissues that sends signals to the brain. [09:42] Prolactin is the prompter of manufacturing breast milk but does much more. [10:49] Our brain wakes up in the morning with a surge of cortisol, the fight or flight hormone. Another hormone that is high in the morning is ghrelin, the appetite signal. [12:00] Leptin signaling is compromised by lifestyle practices, like too much artificial light after dark. [14:10] In the obese, ghrelin is much lower in the morning than expected and when food is eaten, it stays elevated. [15:34] As Brad goes through explaining the circadian rhythm process, we see that about 6:45 a.m. is when the blood pressure has the sharpest rise. [16:15] Around 7:30 a.m., usually after an hour of sunlight, melatonin is completely shut off. [19:00] The morning sunlight stimulus gets the other hormones going to increase activity. [20:45] Although we are primed to consume calories in the morning, it is really popular these days to try fasting. [21:30] Proceeding through the morning’s body rhythm, Brad points out that around 10:00 a.m. we have the highest secretion of sex steroid hormones. Ideal muscle coordination occurs at 2:30 p.m. [23:08] Around 5:00 p.m. is the best time for exercise. [24:54] It is important to have three or four hours of darkness in the evening. [27:03] At midnight, your body is still hard at work. [30:41] Having artificial lights on so that it doesn’t get dark is a huge health hazard. [32:56] If you don’t have a healthy metabolic function, you will not be burning fat as you sleep. [36:07] The timing of leptin is critical. It usually occurs between 12 and 3:00 a.m. [37:10] Post-menopausal women often find the timing of this evening meal impacts their ability to sleep well and they also gain weight regardless of their exercise and diet regimen. [39:07] There are many ways you can become cold-adapted.
