Mark comes on to talk about owning a lab and seeing the struggles to find good talent. So he created a website where labs can create a profile to look for technicians and technicians can post that they are looking for a good lab. It's a different approach to a much-needed service in our industry. Then we have a conversation with Chris Nevarez. Chris started his dental career with Patterson. From warehouse to customer service, Chris started to really understand the ins and outs of clinical dentistry. After his mother needed some dental work, Chris found a way for her medical insurace to help cover a lot of the cost. Now he is doing this for patients and clinics. The best part about all of this is that if more people have access to care, then that is more cases coming to the labs. Take it from Laura Prosser, the digital marketing manager for Ivoclar North America (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us). She would like to invite you to start following them on Instagram. In this episode of SpaceTime, we unveil groundbreaking evidence that challenges previously held theories about the origins of Earth's water. Recent findings published in the journal Icarus indicate that rather than being delivered by asteroids and comets, Earth's water may have formed alongside the planet itself. The study utilizes a unique meteorite known as the enstatite chondrite to reveal a rich source of hydrogen essential for water formation, reshaping our understanding of how life-sustaining conditions developed on Earth. The Enigmatic Magnetic Field of MarsNext, we delve into the curious case of Mars's magnetic field, which has puzzled scientists for decades. A new study suggests that the strange magnetic signatures observed on the Red Planet could be attributed to a partially molten core predominantly covering the southern hemisphere. This research provides fresh insights into Mars's geological history and the implications for its atmospheric evolution, as the planet transitioned from a warm, wet environment to the arid desert we see today. The Lyrids Meteor ShowerAdditionally, we celebrate one of humanity's oldest known meteor showers, the Lyrids, which are currently dazzling skywatchers. First recorded over 2,700 years ago, these meteors originate from comet Thatcher and promise a beautiful celestial display. Although not as prolific as other meteor showers, the Lyrids offer a captivating spectacle for stargazers, with expectations of 10 to 15 meteors per hour during peak viewing times.00:00 Space Time Series 28 Episode 50 for broadcast on 25 April 202500:49 New evidence on the origins of Earth's water06:30 Analysis of the enstatite chondrite meteorite12:15 The mystery of Mars's magnetic field18:00 Implications of a partially molten Martian core22:45 Overview of the Lyrids meteor shower27:00 Summary of recent astronomical findings30:15 Science report: Health risks linked to food additiveswww.spacetimewithstuartgary.comwww.bitesz.com

Founder and Publisher Daniel Power started powerHouse Books in 1995, and was joined by Craig Cohen in 1996. The early years had Power and Cohen tag-teaming on a few books at a time, raising the bar each season when, in 1998, PowerHouse Books had its first best-seller, Women Before 10 A.M. by Véronique Vial. Power and Cohen followed up on that success in 1999 with the critically acclaimed cult monographs X-Ray by François Nars and Life is Paradise by Francesco Clemente and Vincent Katz. In 2000, Cohen became a partner in the company, assuming the title of Vice President and Associate Publisher, serving as Executive Publisher between 2008 and 2019. He quickly signed up for the next company bestseller, Back in the Days by Jamel Shabazz, and in the same year, he developed a packaging deal with Capitol Records to produce the Beastie Boys Anthology: The Sounds of Science. With the publishing program growing rapidly, Power and Cohen hired Sara Rosen, who served as Publicity Director from 2000 to 2009. Since then, the company has redefined the cultural landscape of the illustrated book, becoming the only U.S. independent publishing company to do so. Amid the chaos of World War II, a secret project emerged from the depths of military innovation—Project X-Ray. It was an idea so strange, so deceptively simple, it bordered on madness: an army of bats, each carrying a hidden firestorm. Under the cover of night, they would infiltrate enemy cities, vanishing into eaves and rafters—silent and unseen. Without warning, flames would erupt from the shadows, consuming everything in their wake. Designed to spread fear as much as fire, the plan was as terrifying as it was eccentric and most would have been excused for believing it could surely never work. But then, if necessity was the mother of invention, bravery was surely the mother of success, and as the world found out in 1945, the war effort needed something bold.  SOURCES Couffer, Jack (1992) Bat Bomb: World War II's Other Secret Weapon. Bryan Betty: Pneumonia

Saturday Morning with Jack Tame

Pope Francis has spent a month in hospital, struggling with bilateral pneumonia – but what exactly is this infection? What is pneumonia? It's a serious infection of the lungs. Bacteria and virus (or even a fungus) lodge themselves down in the lungs and cause an infection. It's often at the base of one or both lungs. The body reacts to the bacteria or virus, causing a reaction to get rid of the infection, resulting in inflamed lung tissue with fluid or pus. What are the causes and how do we know we have pneumonia? There are two basic types: community acquired, and hospital acquired (hospitals are dangerous places for infections!). Risk factors: a weakened immune system, which could be a result of age, a chronic illness like diabetes, asthma, some medications, smoking, or admittance to a hospital. Viruses such as influenza, Covid, and RSV can cause pneumonia, which is why they are dangerous. Main symptoms (can be sudden onset): cough, bringing up phlegm, fever/chills, chest pain, feeling short of breath. How do we treat pneumonia? It depends on the type. It's often community acquired and is diagnosed on exam with a chest Xray. Treatment includes antibiotics, fluids, rest, paracetamol. If it's severe and you have difficulty breathing – go to the hospital. If it's caused by a virus (influenza or Covid), it's occasionally treated with an anti-viral medication, however, often paracetamol, fluids, rest are used. My treatment was with a fiberglass cast without any surgery since the bones were not displaced.” Is it normal for a fracture to be visible on my x-ray after 50 days?  Well, that is a great question and that is what we're talking about today on the Doc On The Run Podcast.

Wow, I had an MRI done on my back and I talk about my surprising results in this episode.  I've had some previous back issues- a snowboarding injury and a mid back problem with my rib that developed during pregnancy.   A couple times in the last few years that my back “went out” for a few days (last time was over a year ago.)     I do not have chronic back pain, and I do not have to restrict my activity.   But if I had pain and numbness and these same MRIs results, I could qualify for disability.    MRI and X Ray results actually do not accurately predict the amount of pain someone is in.     Structural changes in the body are actually normal with age.   And addressing normal degenerative changes with surgery is really nothing more than a placebo.   We now know it's common for pain free people to have bulging discs, torn rotator cuffs, torn meniscus of the knee, hip labral tears.   We just haven't been doing MRI's on pain free people to see that.   Below are some of the research articles I mentioned:   -Takatalo- 50% of healthy 21 year old Finns had at least one degenerative disc and 25% had a bulging disc. -Boos- 73% of adults without back pain had bulging discs.  -Briggs- hip labral tears in 89% of pain free young athletes 16 years of age or older, & 56% of pain free athletes 16 years or younger. -S Rajasekaran- Delivery of MRI results affects pain and healing. -Karayannis Fear of movement is associated with trunk stiffness.   If you are a woman experiencing chronic neck or back pain, I am forming a group especially for you!  Details to come soon.

When you get a metatarsal stress fracture from running, if you get a crack in the bone, it will eventually start to heal. If you keep exercising, walking, running, doing elliptical training, and you are aggravating the fracture at all, the bone callus will get larger.  Over time, the bone callus will remodel, and that lump will get thinner. The lump of bone will get smaller. But if you are having pain because you have a huge lump of bone in your foot, at some point you might want to take a look at it with medical imaging.   Should I get an MRI or an X-ray when I have a large bone callus after a stress fracture, and I want to assess the callus remodeling?  Well, great question and that is what we're talking about today on the Doc On The Run Podcast.
