EPISODE 513 - M.T. Solomon - Women's SciFi Fantasy, Liar Queen, Setting Down Past TraumaAboutBorn in the American South and raised in the remote wilderness of Alaska, M.T. Solomon has been writing books since she was six years old. At the age of eleven she wrote and hand-stitched the binding to her own story: a riff of Calvin and Hobbes with a female protagonist. She graduated from Portland State University in 2012 with a B.S. in Liberal Studies and a Minor in Writing. Her work has appeared on the cover of Gotham Writers Class Schedule and has been featured on The Spinning Pen, and Wow! Women on Writing. Solomon's writing takes cues from her childhood, where the vast setting of Alaska seemed just as much a character in her life story as she did. She favors broken or imperfect characters and utilizes a lyrical, repetitive style within her prose. Her work is heavily influenced by the female authors she grew up loving: Margaret Atwood, Lois Lowry, and Alice Hoffman.Winner of Gotham Writers #storieseverywhere for July 2016.Story as Cover Art for Gotham Writers Winter Class Schedule 2016-2017Contributor on Ad Hoc Fiction.Short Story Winner on The Spinning Pen (December 2016).Dual POV Prompt Flash Fiction Contributor on The Spinning Pen (March 2017).Guest Writer on The Spinning Pen (February 2017 & March 2017).Runner Up for Wow! Australian Open semi-finalist Ben Shelton has taken the Grand Slam's on-court interviewers to task for being 'disrespectful' to players. Shelton initially laughed off some divisive comments from former Davis Cup player John Fitzgerald, who interviewed him after his first semi-final at Melbourne Park - but later told reporters he was 'shocked' by how players were treated by broadcasters. Tennis commentator Craig Gabriel says some of the comments that took place after the fact may have been better left unsaid. "With things being a little bit touchy on how things are spoken of these days - you've got to be a little bit careful." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Send us a textAfter high praise from Ellen Geer a few episodes, we were able to get Jennie Webb to sit in the Playwright's Spotlight and share her experiences as a playwright, dramaturg, and overseer of workshops. We explored her transition from acting into playwriting, her assistance in developing new works from "living voices", the benefits of asking questions, knowing the origin of a moment and earning it as pushing boundaries and whether or not there is a formula for playwriting. Tom received his BA and BFA in Art and Art History from the University of Oregon in 1995 and his MFA in Painting from American University in 1998. Tom has exhibited nationally and internationally and he currently teaches art at St Stephen's & St Agnes School and American University. In today's episode, Tom and I discuss his origins as an abstract painter, his drawings, painting from observation, motifs, Tom's confidence in materials and mistrust of process, how these days he efficiently utilizes shorter amounts of studio time, the need to protect the ideas within the studio, and we also discuss some of Tom's recent paintings in depth.
