Maria Rotilu, founder and general Partner at OpenseedVC, discusses the thesis behind backing operator-led startups, and how Africa's large, youthful population - combined with decreasing barriers to innovation - is positioning the continent as a valuable investment opportunity. Rotilu is an operator-turned-investor and founder, specialising in backing operators-turned-founders who are building tech startups as early as day zero. Before transitioning to investing, she spent the better part of the first decade of her career scaling multinational technology companies like Uber and Branch.co, holding leadership roles such as country manager and general manager. Prior to OpenseedVC, Rotilu was a fund manager at Octopus Ventures' First Cheque Fund. Before that, she served as the managing director of the Oxford Seed Fund. OpenseedVC is typically the first investor, providing up to $150k and supporting tech startups in B2B software, AI, fintech, the future of work, or the future of health by leveraging an operator network to support them from start to launch.

Mary Ann Azevedo, Kirsten Korosec, and Alex Wilhelm had a lot to parse this week. We had notes on wallet-as-a-service' startup Ansa's latest fundraise, and how Alex initially misunderstood its business model. Then Kirsten talked us through a simply massive deal in the self-driving space, while Alex wanted to riff on Beehiiv and its own funding round. $33 million is no small Series B in 2024!From there, we had a few minutes to discuss Anna Heim's recent reporting on disability tech and how AI is taking and industry and accelerating it. Even better, there appear to be a mix of business models approached by the startups we discussed. That means that there could be many avenues to making tech that works better for more folks into real, and large businesses. To close out, Dominic-Madori Davis joined us to chat about her reporting on Techstars. The company has been shaking up its operations for some time now, leading to certain departures from its ranks. Female Investors, Funds & Founders Panel, Newport Conference July 18-20, 2022
Anne Cocquyt didn't come from a traditional entrepreneurial background. It wasn't until she got into the world of consulting that she realized she wanted to build ideas. With a failed art business under her belt, Anne moves on to the iPhone case market. With some success and an almost accidental exit, Anne now focuses on helping others to start their businesses. As the founder and CEO of The Guild, Anne helps other female entrepreneurs to get their ideas off the ground. The Land Of Entrepreneurs As the daughter of two teachers in a small town in Germany, Anne didn't grow up with a lot of entrepreneurial spirit. Most people she knew went off to work for a car manufacturer or as an engineer. Anne got out of there the first chance she got, 15 years ago, and got into consulting. She says that really teed her up to be a cocky entrepreneur. Her first business was in art in Switzerland, and it didn't go well. Just 10 years ago, Anne decided to come to the US, and for the first time she was meeting like-minded people. Silicon Valley was full of other entrepreneurs that believed in her vision. The Wrong Side Of The Desk Together with her husband, Anne started an iPhone case business. Her husband created a Kickstarter that didn't go well. That's when Anne pushed him to invest their own money. Looking back, she says that was her first real step towards entrepreneurship. While that company grew, Anne went to work at Genentech. When Anne found out they had an innovation department, she knew she had to be a part of it, and so she became a corporate partner. This opened up a whole other world of investing to Anne. She learned the ropes quickly and after a few years realized she was on the wrong side of the desk. She wanted to be pitching her ideas and collecting the big checks. That's when she decided to start a global community of female investors, something she calls The Guild. What started as a more social platform has pivoted into an educational platform. Anne says all of her experience has culminated into helping female entrepreneurs launch big scale companies. Knowing What You Know Now, What Would You Tell Yourself Ten Years Ago? Anne would tell herself to ask for more help, and sooner. She says she would be quicker with her hiring and firing decisions. Most importantly, she would surround herself with exceptional people and learn from them as much as she could. She would tell herself that she'll get a different energy from people that can relate to what you're trying to do. What Anne Is Working On Now Anne's main focus currently is The Guild. She has, however, recently published a book called Dare To Launch. In it, she shares ten years of wisdom around building companies. She calls it inspiring but practical and says it can be found on Amazon. Spoiler alert.. I don't think its a good idea. So, backstory, I had a couple people ask about portfolio simulators and whether they are a good way to learn about investing and prepare to actually start investing.. and my answer is always that the best way to learn about investing is doing it. Sure, do your research, get the basics down pat but if you get the basics, stop trying to perfect it for the sake of it. As a beginner, I highly doubt that you would go into the market all guns blazing and trade on the daily, so why would you do that in a fake portfolio? Especially when your first investment is very unlikely to mimic an investment from a fake portfolio. Investing will always come with risk, that's why I suggest only starting with money you can afford to lose. So if you can afford to lose the cash, then allow yourself the luxury of participating in the upside. And learn from your mistakes there. Check out this episode to see what I think of portfolio simulators and how you can use them effectively. When you're keen to learn about investing, its fun, exciting, and you're just thinking about how much money you're going to make... until you have to tell your tax agent about your investments, or even worse when you're getting letter after letter in your mailbox (yes, your physical one) from the ASX. This episode is to take you through some of the admin things you might not have thought of, but should get on top of, as well as giving you my favourite tips to stay organised about my investments and be absolutely sure I have all the materials I need to stay successful in my investing and in any reporting too. Whether you're new to investing or just sick of only men talking about investing - this podcast is for you. I love talking about all things money, but there is a special place in my heart for investing. Women are the minority of investors in Australia (and globally), and I believe it's time to change this. Every second week I will be talking about all things investing and breaking down the hard stuff so you can sit back, learn something, and then apply what is discussed by doing your own research then investing! If you want more, there are already a bunch of episodes ready for you to listen, or you can join me @thefemaleinvestors on Instagram so we can talk more. I hope you're ready to take your investing knowledge to the next level.
As you trail through a company's details, there is often a lot of focus on management, and rightly so because they are in charge of a company! Right? But who actually is management? The management structure has your executives on one end, and the Board of Directors on the other, that kind of work as a supervisory body to keep executives in check and often can provide some additional expertise and a point of view that management doesn't have. In this episode I take you through management in a bit me detail and give you an overview of how ASX companies are managed, based on my research and my experience. Let me know what you think!! ********************* The Female Investors Project is a passion project led by Genevieve Hourigan, and is for entertainment and educational purposes only. "I think we still have this image of retirement where we sit in our rocking chairs on the porch, drinking lemonade, watching the world go by. That is NOT the modern day retirement."On this week's episode, our host Thamina is joined by Stephanie McCullough, Founder and CEO of Sofia Financial, whose mission is to empower women to make wise financial decisions and reduce their money stress.According to Stephanie, society's traditional understanding of retirement is outdated as more and more people want work to become optional earlier in life or take sabbaticals. Saving for modern-day retirement is therefore all about freedom creating options for oneself. However, unfortunately, many women still lack confidence when it comes to managing their money and are faced with a particular set of problems around the goal of retirement. The traditional financial services industry is ill-equipped to handle this problem.Stephanie and Thamina highlight the fact that investing and saving is not about being perfect or knowing the answer to all financial questions. It is about getting started and aligning your money habits with your priorities in life.Subscribe to Stephanie's Podcast "Take Back Retirement".

You are a female founder looking for new cash? And you want to learn the exclusive insights and tricks of an experienced investor to make it in the (unfortunately) still male-dominated startup world? Or maybe you are a male founder and you just lost one of your best female executives and you realize you need to turn around your company's culture sooner or later? Because – after what happened in scandal-ridden firms such as Wirecard with an all-male leadership and N26 that made headlines with an internal rebellion against its management – the investor's convinced that gender equality is more than ever key to the future of your company: "If there would have been females investing in those companies, things would have been a little bit different." My name is Emmanuelle Flahault-Franc, I amDirector of communications for Iris Capital, a European VC, co-author of the book “Into the French Tech” and have been working in tech for over 12 years now. I would like to talk with you about the lack of female VC and the fact that many women need to actually consider that job as probably a second-time career job or maybe a new job for the younger generation. What’s a VC or an investor? VC is an acronym for venture capitalist, somebody who will invest money in your company and your startup and who will follow you across your path. This is very different from a banker. We are not loaning you money, investors decide to come with you on the project, they invest money, they invest time, they invest energy with you. And being a VC has two sides of the job, 1: You are ready to invest everything you've got and 2 : you actually hate to take risks because entrepreneurs take risks. Being a VC is making sure you can bet on people and you can bet on projects and not just decide who will get you all the money back but also making sure you are ready to make big decisions. Try and test, if it does work its magic if it does not work it's not a big drama. Why you should be a VC especially if you’re a woman? Because it's not a job about money, or figures, it's not about calculating all the time how much money you're going to make. This is not being a trader. Being a VC, is about being passionate of and about entrepreneurs, wanting to work with them, and the best for them, wanting to make sure that they ask for the right money, and you provide the right money, and helping them on making sure the project is shaped the right way. (...)The first thing you do as a VC is meeting and chasing, so there is a lot of hunting, for the best companies, the best entrepreneurs. Every VC will tell you that they invest in people more than in techs. And who's the best person to encourage more diversity? A woman, because we care about lots of different people. (...) When I joined Iris Capital there were very little women and I expressed my doubts. They told me : ”We used to be the only fund in Paris, with two female investors. Unfortunately they left and have amazing careers now. Can you really force them to stay with you? No you can't.” I decided to join the fund to make sure that my voice as a woman and as a feminist was heard. Being a feminist is not a woman topic it’s an everyone topic. If you go to pitch to a VC, do not fear to say that you would like to see more females, more diversity. It will encourage them to hire more women, juniors, seniors. If you think that being a VC is only for people who love finance, who love spreadsheets, data, then you might be wrong. Of course it's part of the job, of course you have to be able to read, write, correct a budget, a P&L with an entrepreneur but most of your job is understanding their field and what they do. You can be a VC coming from finance obviously but also from marketing, having been an entrepreneur previously, or a manager. Being a VC is making sure you can support entrepreneurs If they are in trouble, if they cannot reach a corporate, if they feel insecure, if they need a boost on how to make the biggest sales. You have to make sure you are passionate as much as they are and you are able to go with them across the journey. That’s not a finance job, that’s a human being job I've decided to join 50intech because I think that lots of things are badly perceived and badly understood and i would like to help you navigate that.

‘I wanted to play with Barbies, but I also loved smashing up a computer and learning about silicon chips.' Despite growing up in a tech savvy, entrepreneurial family, Jesse Draper didn't see herself as a venture capitalist for a long time because ‘that's not what women do.' So, how do we level the playing field and get girls to see themselves in roles as startup founders, investors and board members? Jesse is the founding partner of Halogen Ventures, a VC firm focused on early-stage investing in female-founded consumer technology startups. Her portfolio includes Laurel & Wolf, Carbon38, the Skimm, HopSkipDrive and Sugarfina, among many others. Jesse is also the creator and host of 2015 Emmy-nominated series The Valley Girl Show, producing and distributing 500 interviews with some of the greatest minds in technology and entrepreneurship. She has been a contributor to Marie Claire, Mashable and Forbes, and Jesse serves on the board of Werk, SurfAir and nonprofit Bizworld.
