It has been shrinking since the advent of agriculture. The large human brain reaches peak size from the nutrients in a diet high in meat and animal fat. Salt: Eating carbohydrates makes the kidneys hold on to salt rather than excrete it. The body then retains water to balance the blood's sodium concentration. It's not the salt that causes water retention, higher blood volume, and subsequent high blood pressure. Water: A diet high in carbohydrates means you need to drink more water. When you take out carbohydrates from you diet, you only need to drink when you are thirsty. Carbohydrates cause stress. If stressed, you must drink more to give the adrenals the sodium they need to send messages. Artificial sweeteners are as stimulatory as sugar and, therefore, stressful. Back in 1999, Dr. Martin wrote a book called, Steps to Fight Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for the Modern Woman. In the book he also discusses fibromyalgia, which he says is an aspect of chronic fatigue. These combined conditions have been renamed at the Martin Clinic. Dr. Martin now refers to them as adrenal exhaustion. In today's episode, Dr. Martin talks about the different factors that can lead to a category 5 storm of adrenal exhaustion. Chronic stress is the major contributor, but environmental factors like mold exposure, antibiotics, Lyme disease, family dynamics, and a poor diet are all contributing factors. Dr. Martin also discusses various symptoms associated with adrenal exhaustion and how to address them. Don't miss this informative episode!

Terms like adrenal fatigue and adrenal exhaustion don't really make sense from a physiological perspective. It's not just about the gland but about an entire system than can suffer from dysfunction without having to be diagnosed as a disease. It's more common to have adrenal dysfunciotn than it is to have a disease of the gland. Hit the subscribe or follow button to be notified when new episodes drop. For more information on this topic or to schedule a consultation please visit us at http://WhatIsHashimotos.com Impact of adrenal exhaustion on Hashimotos bear with me on this one. This one might be a few minutes longer. I'll try not to make it too long. Okay. Because when I first got into functional medicine, it was, you can't fix the adrenals. You can't fix anything. There's a smidge in of truth to that, there's some truth to that. But the reality is, is the adrenals get the snot kicked out of him like every day, all day long. And it's not stress it's partially stress it's it's. And, and let me even refine that. What I meant to say was it's not particularly mental stress, everything that happens in your system that creates inflammatory responses and puts you outta balance, causes a stress on your adrenal glands. Okay? And so your adrenal glands are, they are affected by they're affected by food sensitivities. They're affected by leaky gut. They're affected by lipo poly rights. They're affected by small intestinal bacteria overgrowth. They're affected by any type of an infection they're affected by any type of a chemical sensitivity. And in a lot of the, Hashimoto's patients they're affected by over exercising, they're affected by not sleeping enough, they're affected by not being too sedentary. I could go on for a long time with, to all the things that create and a stress on the, on the body that forces your adrenal glands to either put out stress hormones, which is a adrenaline epinephrine or epinephrine or adrenaline. It can put out, it can put out cortisol, which is the one that everybody seems to be really familiar with today. Everybody's familiar with cortisol now, as they should be, they can put out cortisol and cortisol knows it's a stress hormone, but it's also, it's also before it's an inflammatory hormone. It's, it's actually an anti-inflammatory home run before it becomes too much. And it also helps to control your blood sugar. It also can. It's also helps to control all your sex hormones. If you're, if you're in menopause and prior to menopause, it's a secondary repository for making, for making sex hormone. So your adrenals do a lot and they are affected by all that. You go through menopause and you're going through menopause really badly. And you're having a bad time. You, you have bad adrenals, but your E imbalances that and progesterone imbalances, they're going, they're also screwing up your adrenal. So the point is when I attack a case, if the person has adrenal fatigue, and I hate that, I hate that term, but that's the term that a lot of people like to use, okay. Or adrenal exhaustion, or I it's just hypo adrenal function. The adrenals are like, they're like a little factory. Somebody says, I need these hormones. They put 'em out. They put 'em out. They put 'em out. They put 'em out, they put 'em out. And all of a sudden they all have so, so much hormones that they can put out and they are amazingly, amazingly regenerative. I might add the adrenals. So really the adrenals are, are how do they affect how they affect Hashimoto's or, or how does Hashimoto's affect them? http://powerhealthtalk.com http://drmartinrutherford.com Martin P. Episode 445: Run, Eat Meat, Repeat with Michelle Hurn If you are looking for ways to become fat-adapted, then the low-carb, high-fat diet is the best place to start. It's a way to induce ketosis, which means that your body will start using fat as its primary source of energy instead of carbohydrates. This doesn't mean that carbohydrates are evil. We need them to provide energy to our muscles during intense exercise. You cannot rely on gluconeogenesis for all your energy needs. It has a limit, especially if you are training a lot. Carbs are an important source of fuel for your muscles and brain, but you need to choose the right type of carbs and add them strategically and intuitively into your meal for maximum benefit. In today's episode, I'm chatting with Michelle Hurn. Michelle is an ultra-runner, the author of the Dietitian's Dilemma, and a registered and licensed dietitian with eleven years of experience as a clinical, acute care dietitian, lead dietitian in psychiatric care, and outpatient dietitian. While practicing inpatient and outpatient care in the hospital setting, Michelle discovered a disheartening connection between the high carbohydrate, low fat, “sugar in moderation” nutrition guidelines she was required to teach and the rapidly declining health of her patients. It simply didn't work for her and most people. In 2019, Michelle decided to follow an LCHF, high animal protein diet to see if it would alleviate the severe muscle pain she was experiencing. Not only was her muscle pain gone in a matter of weeks, but her decades of anxiety also began to fade. During the episode, Michelle talks about how you can fuel yourself for endurance sports and how high fat, low carb diet can be liberating and beneficial to you as an athlete. She also dives into carb timing, fasted exercise, and how to match your fuel with your workout. John Murphy is today's guest and can best be described as a man with passion all the way to the roots. Yes, you've just read Slo Mo's first published pun.John is the founder of Lettuce Evolve, a revolutionary garden technology company he created to literally save his life. In 2009, after finding success in pursuit of the American Dream, John suddenly found himself facing a nightmare when he burned out so bad that he became incapacitated for seven years. Modern medicine had no answers, and he needed to eat upwards of seven nutritional meals a day just to meet his caloric needs.Struck by the high cost of organic produce and disillusioned with the toxic system that made him sick in the first place, he drew up and built the first Aquarium-Powered Vertical Garden in his small room while still ill. Since then, he's been on a mission to promote self-sufficiency through his company's space-saving gardens that can provide all your organic fruits and vegetables at a fraction of the cost and space, all without soil, right in your home.John and Lettuce Evolve are currently running their IndieGoGo campaign and I urge you to support this mission if it resonates with you. I am not profiting from this in anyway and only recommending something I personally think is amazing, as always. Still a medical mystery to this day.The Vertical Garden: a self-cleaning fish tank that grows the freshest possible food without soil or sunlight.John's vision: a vertical garden in every home, leading to a healthier world. Are these gardens a threat to farmers?John's crowdfunding campaign on IndieGoGo, which you can support here.Instagram: @mo_gawdatFacebook: @mo.gawdat.officialTwitter: @mgawdatLinkedIn: /in/mogawdatWebsite: mogawdat.comConnect with John Murphy on Facebook @lettuceevolve, Twitter @lettuceevolve, Instagram @lettuceevolve, and their website, lettuceevolve.comMy new book Scary Smart is now available. On this episode, I talk with Joanna Chodorowska. Joanna is a driven, lifelong athlete who has competed in multiple Ironman triathlon races. It's a grueling, day-long race where you swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and THEN run a full marathon! Joanna was at the peak of her athletic fitness when she hit the wall (figuratively). Her body just wouldn't go anymore. She soon learned that she had adrenal exhaustion. She went from training for 140-mile races to needing a nap after walking to the mailbox. Exercise was her stress relief – until it became a major stressor on her health. In my conversation with Joanna, you'll hear… The combination of stressors that led to adrenal exhaustion The impact on her thyroid function and menstrual cycle How she re-learned how to eat to fuel her body as an athlete The nutritional changes that improved her blood sugar and adrenals How she found new ways to manage her stress The other self-care tactics that helped her recover from adrenal exhaustion How Joanna returned to Ironman racing once she knew how to support her body These days, Joanna is a holistic nutritionist, a pain and inflammation expert, author, speaker, ordained minister, founder of Nutrition in Motion, athlete and lover of life. She guides athletes to relieve their pain and health challenges so they more fully love their bodies and active lives. Joanna discovered through her own healing from adrenal exhaustion and arthritic hips, that the body can heal naturally given the right tools. Whether you're an athlete or not, I know you'll take away valuable insights from this episode. Episode web page: www.rebuildingmyhealth.com/adrenal-exhaustion. This is the final episode in our 'Slow Down and Live' Health and wellness Series. It has been an informative and educational journey. We are closing out the series with a presentation by Dr Joan Lamle, who is actually my Naturopath. Dr Lamle will be looking at the very prevalent but often misdiagnosed matter of Adrenal Fatigue, one of the things that I was diagnosed with. Stay tuned as Dr Lamle with us on the topic of 'Adrenal Fatigue: Why Aren't More Medical Doctors Diagnosing It?' Dr. Joan Lamle is a Natural Health Consultant who specializes in lifestyle diseases with a special emphasis on women's health. Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Learn about the Adrenal glands and the purpose they serve. Learn about the different stages of Adrenal fatigue. Learn about the necessary changes that need to be made to have healthy adrenal function. Episode Highlights Our Adrenal Glands are more important than you think. The Adrenal Gland is located just above the Kidneys and produces hormones that regulate metabolism, the immune system, blood pressure, and stress response. When you undergo chronic stress it leads to Adrenal Fatigue. The Adrenal gland releases Cortisol which regulates blood pressure in stressful situations or conditions i.e your fight or flight response. However, if constantly stressed this Cortisol can become harmful to the body in more ways than one. Adrenal Fatigue and its progression to Adrenal Exhaustion occurs when the adrenal in the body is unable to turn off. This can be the result of things such as underlying infections, nutrition deficiencies, leaky gut syndrome, and an overload of toxicities. Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue Adrenal Fatigue is much more common than we think and you might just be experiencing it at this very moment. Here are a few tips to help you spot the signs so you too can slow down and live. Feeling tired but wired: even though you are tired you have a constant need to get things done. Fatigue Irritability Low sex drive Trouble Sleeping Cognitive Issues- Brain fog Hormonal Imbalance Depression Increased Energy Levels in the Evenings Craving of Salty and Sweet foods Balance is Key The body was made to help us survive therefore, we have to recognize how our actions can compromise our ability to do so. Adrenal exhaustion will affect us when the Adrenals can no longer meet the demands of its environment. Whenever our systems are compromised by a lack of rest, nutrition, or otherwise, our body sends off alarms and the onus is on us to pay attention to these alarms. We must therefore strike some kind of balance in our life to ensure our Adrenal system does not overwork itself. As such we must consider several aspects of our lives and put thought into how our actions are affecting us. Dr. Lamle explores nutrition and the things we should be having versus the ones we should avoid to repair and take care of our Adrenal System. She also solidifies the importance of rest as we have heard from several of our speakers in the ‘Slow down and live' series. Rest is very vital to our quality of life and can help to reduce stress hormones and improve adrenal function. Exercise is just as important as our body needs the ability to use some of the energy it stores and there are fun ways to do so, not to mention the rush of dopamine that comes at the end of a good workout. Dr. Lamle also highlights the importance of healing your gut to restore overall balance in your body. Exposure to Sunlight is also an affirmative action for improved overall health as well as trusting in a divine power. Research proves that persons with religious beliefs have better mental health and adapt more quickly to health challenges. Dr. Lamle's final point on having balance was having Temperance so the body can operate at its best level.

Today my guest is a fellow podcaster, coach and athlete who has struggled as myself with burnout and breakdown of her body systems. We chat about our experiences with chronic stress, METABOLIC CHAOS®, as we say in FDNP, or the old term – “Adrenal Fatigue” or for me “Adrenal Exhaustion” …technically dysfunction to our HPA Axis (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis). Based on my experience with “Adrenal Exhaustion” signs and symptoms starting the obviously show up in February 2013, my purpose and mission is to help driven individuals avoid going through what I went through the past eight years! I shared my personal story in my book LIFE IS NOT A RACE to help create awareness of being addicted to busy-ness and living with the philosophy that “more is better' – when sometimes that less is more! You could be like me and doing all the “Right” things in life to stay fit, strong, and healthy- but only to find yourself overindulging in LIFE itself. I was burning the candle at both ends for MANY years until my red warning flags were too obvious to ignore anymore. I was doing fasted workouts, I was doing strength training, I was doing yoga, I was doing low carb keto type of eating and I was feeling happy everyday! Anything too much does accumulate and overfills our “beaker of stress”. Too much of anything can lead to “METABOLIC CHAO®”! The struggle is real, and you are not alone! My friend Connie has experienced unexplained fatigue, weight gain and burnout -and today she shares her story and journey. Connie Nightingale is a certified nutritionist, personal trainer, former bodybuilding athlete busy mom and the Host of The Fit Farming Food Mom podcast. Knowing that the body is part of one beautifully functioning whole, Connie uniquely targets the mental, physical, and nutritional elements of healthy living. It has been said many times over that “Abs start in the kitchen.” While this is true, Connie knows that mental wellness, gut health, and physical energy start in the kitchen too. This is why Connie tailors individualized eating plans for her customers' specific goals and desired outcomes. Her journey towards holistic health has changed her from the inside out and she is ready to help you do the same. Connie's expertise ranges from nutritional guidance, one-on-one personal training, lifestyle coaching, fitness photography, mindset reframing, and bodybuilding competition coaching. Her goal is to teach each client how to empower themselves towards future self-sufficiency by guiding them to crack their very own health code. Contact Connie on her website here Enjoy the show! Let me know if you have any questions for either of us. We are here to help you avoid digging yourself into a hole and experiencing H.I.D.D.E.N. internal sources of CHRONIC Stress that accumulate from living life as a race for too long! Suddenly you will find your hormones, immune system, digestion, detoxification, energy system and nervous systems are all out of whack as we lose balance or homeostasis in our body systems. CHRONIC stress can break you down and burn out your body systems – trust me. I experienced it firsthand starting back in 2013. Join my journey and my mission to help other ambitious, high performing individuals get their body and vibrant self back again by finding out what is actually going on “under the hood” by running functional lab tests and investigate the WHOLE picture! I help you put your missing pieces of your METABOLIC CHAOS® puzzle together to restore your health and vitality! Do you want to feel your best self this year and live your best life? We live in hard times, this is undeniable. Now, more than every before, people are struggling in ways that aren't always easy to explain, nor accept. As we continue to blur the lines of acceptable living, the daily pressures to be everything to everyone have effectively altered the ways in which our bodies respond to stress. New diseases & the dramatic rise of others are a case in point that shit needs to change. But where does change begin & what would that feel like? Mid 2015, professional athlete Matt Murphy found himself with big questions to ask as his ability to focus and perform took a massive dive. It's funny how life sometimes throws such large curve balls that it literally forces our hand. Forces the next move, and ultimately sets us up for the next phase. Adrenal dysfunction is a very real and diagnosable state of ill-health which feels much worse than it sounds. This all-encompassing state of anguish is literally a life changer that many people never fully recover from. This is the first of many real life case studies which demonstrates the amazing opportunity that sits just beneath your own discomfort, and how ultimately adaptation always reveals a new light. What does one do when the doctors tell you that everything is OK, despite the fact that you know if your gut that you're actually not OK at all? What is OK anyway? Is health simply the absence of pathology as revealed via laboratory tests, or does our health encompass much more? Attached you will find the PSE Supplements Adrenal Awareness Campaign which fully outlines Adrenal Dysfunction & all it entails; the how, the why & the what can all be found by downloading the report. As the world finally wakes us to the subjective concept of wellbeing, I leave you with this podcast. Shannon...

Craig asks @ 00:32:38 After listening to the interview with Dr Cobb, he was wondering if Lasik (laser) Eye surgery might positively effect performance. ~ In my response to Craig, I mention the Z-Health interview and the Bates Method. Ian asks @ 00:42:27 His father has Restless Legs. Every night when he goes to bed his legs and shoulders twitch. He doesn't take any supplements but he does have lowish thyroid. Would like to know what he should be eating or taking. Could this be an inflammatory issue? ~ In my response, I recommend: Magnesium lotion, Floradix, Full spectrum antioxidant with Vitamin C and E, such as LifeShotz, Bitter melon extract, Valerian Root, Folic acid, Near Infrared, and Fish oil. Sidestitch says @ 00:53:10 She gets a left sided stitch when she drinks more than 4oz of water on a long run (she also gets an annoying sloshing feeling) and also at the end of shorter more intense sessions, if she has eaten less than 2 hours before. What's up with that and how can she stop it? Also, is there an easy way to find topics that have been covered on past podcasts? ~ This response can be found as part of the Ben Greenfield Fitness Top Hits, Vol. 1. Jim says @ 01:13:17 He is 46 years old and has been performing fasted workouts for the last 25 years. Lately he has been keeping an eye on his glucose levels due to a fasted glucose test of 129 and an A1C of 4.8. He noticed that during his hard fasted workouts his blood glucose increases up to 35 points. He has increased his cinnamon intake, is only eating carbs after workouts and is supporting his liver with bitter melon. He is curious if there is a way of quantifying that 35 point rise in terms of calories released by the liver. ~ In my response to Jim, I mention bitter melon extract. Katie asks @ 01:19:50 She knows there are a lot of artificial sweeteners in low carb products and would like to know the pros and cons of them. She also likes to drink tea and chew gum during her morning fasts and would like to know how artificial sweeteners can effect fasting. ~ In my response, I mention this B-Fresh gum. Matthew says @ 01:27:29On a previous podcast you mentioned that you are not a fan of the bench press and is wondering if you could expound on that and if you could suggest some alternatives. Prior to asking your question, do a search in upper right hand corner of this website for the keywords associated with your question. Many of the questions we receive have already been answered here at Ben Greenfield Fitness!
