In this episode, I discuss how different forms of exercise impact brain health and performance in both the short and long term. I explain how many of the positive effects of exercise on brain function occur through the action of specific neurochemicals that increase alertness. I also cover how to best time exercise and which specific types of exercise to include in your weekly routine to maximize benefits for your brain. Additionally, I explain how certain types of exercise trigger the release of a hormone from your bones called osteocalcin, as well as brain-derived neurotrophic factor. Together, these substances increase neuroplasticity and enhance learning. The positive effects of exercise on brain oxygenation, blood supply, and fuel utilization are also discussed. Listeners will learn how to design a weekly exercise program that optimizes physical fitness, brain health, longevity, and performance, along with the mechanistic logic behind those recommendations. Jenn notes that this decision is not just about physical recovery, but also about mental and emotional rejuvenation. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing the signs of adrenal fatigue, such as physical and mental exhaustion, and taking steps to reduce stress and toxicity in one's life. Jenn also shares her personal experience of feeling the need for a de-load, and how it has shifted her focus from building muscle to optimizing recovery and mobility. On this week's episode of the Genetic Genius Podcast,  Iona Holloway discusses how to use breathwork in your daily life to breakthrough burnout by optimizing energy and resetting the nervous system for the most successful 2023.  Iona is a best-selling author, coach, and speaker. At Brave Thing, She helps strong women do the inner work to find their blindspots so they can burn brighter and braver in their lives, work, and relationships.  She struggled with an eating disorder, perfectionism, depression, and crushing self-criticism for 20 years. The cruel joke? Her struggle was invisible. She was so strong and competent everyone thought she was fine. Not just fine, perfect. Why would an All-American field hockey player with straight As who got recruited by Google out of college, who could squat nearly 300#, had abs that popped, was in a long term relationship, and slayed her career as a creative director have shit to cry about? She was so good at hiding in plain site she fooled herslef sometimes. But like all muscles, even the strongest wills break. And in her late 20s, She broke into what felt like a million pieces. When she was was scrambling around in the dark looking for help she was met by a wall of labels, diagnoses, -isms, “just do it” culture, and pastel pink wellness. Whatever kind of woman she was, she didn't seem to fit anywhere. But shs was determined to get her shit together. And after a lot of rough investments in some of the wrong (and some of the right!) teachers, she emerged from the pits of hell really liking herself, understanding that the unconscious mind and emotional body are where it's at for deep healing, transformation and change, and clutching a diamond of a life she was thrilled to live. Not bad for a former nihilist. In this weeks episode, we discuss the following topics: 1. What is breathwork? 2. How can breathwork be used to reset the nervous system and calm the mind? 3. Let's talk about adrenal burnout. What happens to the body when we are living in burnout? 4. How does breathwork help us prevent burnout and energize the body? 5. House Call Highlight: Wired and Tired: Fixing Adrenal Burnout | ButcherBox and PaleovalleyYou have likely heard the term “adrenal fatigue.” We commonly associate this term with the feelings of extreme fatigue, hormonal dysregulation, and other physical symptoms that can occur from chronic stress. More accurately, we can look to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis for the cause of these discomforts. If you have chronic stress, your adrenals get beat up, and your energy plummets and it becomes difficult to manage your life. You could feel tired and wired, all at the same time. All these are clues that you could have an imbalance of your HPA axis.In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the signs of HPA axis dysfunction and how to support your HPA axis to reverse burnout. In this episode, I pick up with my conversation educating you about the downstream effects copper has on your mineral system and your body. I share the connection as to how this causes your Adrenals to  Weaken & Adrenal Burnout ensues. Then I talk about the slowing of the thyroid's effectiveness at the cell level which decreases your metabolism. Of course this becomes a bigger problem as stress rises and increases which then leads to an emotional stress response getting triggered that isn't so pretty and feels volatile. In order to help exhausted women get their spark back I want to share how the body melts down so you can stop piece mealing your health and dig into supporting your entire system and self (mind/body/emotions). I highly recommend going back and listening to episodes 18 and 19 first. To learn more about how you can with with me 1:1, head over HERE.
