Andrew Walworth, Tom Bevan and Carl Cannon discuss the latest developments in efforts to stop the war in Ukraine, including this weekend's meeting among European leaders. They evaluate whether the rift between President Zelensky of Ukraine and President Trump is reparable. Then, they look ahead to tomorrow's address by Donald Trump to Congress, and discuss former New York governor Andrew Cuomo's bid to become the next mayor of New York City. Plus, they talk about a New York Times op-ed that attributes Elon Musk's actions to the fact that he “is a white South African” whose “worldview is inseparable from his rearing in apartheid South Africa.” Also, why was this year's Oscar Awards Show less political than in the past? And finally, Carl Cannon talks with Suzanne Bates, political editor of the Deseret News about a new poll from HarrisX/Deseret that reveals Americans' feelings about current political figures.

Damo and Tisha are joined by AS1 Justin Kramer. They open the episode with a conversation about the ups and downs of social media. Damo breaks down his extroverted introversion. Is perception really reality, or is that just an overused adage? An AS is a pretty rare rate in the Navy, and Damo wonders if it was Justin's first choice. What does an AS do? AS1 did a tour with the Blue Angels and detailed his experience. What is the margin for error for a Blue Angel? AS1 details his “hardest day” as a Blue Angel. How does an AS with the Blue Angels compete for evaluations? After the Blue Angels, Justin did an IA tour in Bahrain; he broke down the mission. Justin was in Bahrain during the “Day of Rage,” which doubles as one of his worst experiences in the Navy. AS1 details his initial reporting and check-in experiences on the USS Bonhomme Richard (BHR) in 2019. He also gives us a new term: T.E.D.S - Typical Enlisted Dudes. AS1 just so happened to be in the off-going duty section the morning of the fire on the BHR. He played a role in the firefighting efforts as a Team Leader and details his first-hand experiences while attacking the casualty. He describes the physical, mental, and emotional impact that this experience had on him. How was the command climate affected by the fire? How did the command deal with the aftermath of how it played out in the media? AS1 talked about wanting to stay on the ship until she decommissioned. AS1 details living with PTSD, the support of his family, and the therapy he's been receiving. AS1 Kramer gives his “Do Better.” Justin asks Damo and Tish a couple of questions. Damo introduces a game to AS1. I've known Suzanne for about 20 years. She is the relatively rare example of the founder of a boutique firm who successfully built up its valuation, decided to sell, found the right time to sell, overcame the interruption of the pandemic, and closed with an international buyer. Her journey is a huge example of talent, success, and plain grit. Originating in the media business as a news anchor, she migrated to communications education and training, offering her coaching services and gradually built a company which obtained Fortune 500 clients. She describes, in this interview, the challenges encountered and overcome, often not so easily. (She started preparing to sell five years before the sale was actually consummated.) We talk about the impact today of remote learning, ChatGPT, and leadership in ambiguous times. While it may sound grandiose to say that AI will “change the world,” there are precedents, such as the Industrial Revolution, right down to the advent of the internet (which no one predicted). Should social media companies be treated as utilities and regulated (as is gas, electric, and water)? As you read this, I've recently been reinstated after being banished from Linkedin for reasons they won't disclose! It's difficult to sell a business, no matter how successfully, and become someone's “employee” once again. And it's also difficult to decide who you are and what to do once that relationship also ends. Neither Suzanne nor I believe in “retirement.”  And neither should you.

In this panel discussion at TGC21 (moderated by Vanessa Hawkins), Courtney Doctor, Suzanne Bates, Ruth Chou Simons, and Dennae Pierre discuss the barriers to gospel-centered racial unity and practical ways we can move forward. Some of these barriers to racial unity can include: fear of people who are different from us, lack of awareness of others' experiences, and the cost of investing time into these hard conversations. In foolishness and pride, we might see these as simple problems that need to be fixed. In humility and grace, we can listen to and learn from each other's complex experiences. If we are going to build a diverse church, we must be intentional. The panel discusses that reading books on ethnic and racial diversity, attending an ethnic church different from your own, and creating local spaces to have hard conversations, are some practical ways forward with Christ at the center.

Yes! You Can. A podcast for high achievers

Show Notes for Genuine Driven Women Episode #9 Executive Presence This is Episode #9 and I am Tami along with my co-host, Adalida.  On today’s show we are going to talk about how to improve your “Executive Presence”.  According to Suzanne Bates, author of the book, All the Leader You Can Be, executive presence is the “ability of the leader to engage, align, inspire, and move people to act”.   Sylvia Ann Hewlitt, the author of Executive Presence, defines it as “A measure of image:  whether you signal to others that you are star material. If you are able to crack the EP code, you’ll be first in line for that next plum assignment and be given the chance to do something extraordinary with your life.”  The average person may think EP is the way you dress or the ability to give a speech or presentation to a large group.  It is a lot more than that though, if all you do is dress the way you believe an executive should dress at your workplace, and do not consider any other aspects, you may come off as not authentic.  You may even come off kind of awkward, or kind of funny…  Think of the adorable little girl dressed up in her mommy’s church dress, pearls, and high heels.  This might be cute for a child, but it is NOT what we are going for when we try to improve our Executive Presence.   EP is A LOT more than outward appearances.  This is why this topic is so important.  Suzanne Bates breaks down her EP concept into 15 facets of presence and influence, that are also divided into three broad categories, Character, Substance, and Style.  In Sylvia Ann Hewlitt’s book, Executive Presence, she believes that EP can be divided into three main headings, Gravitas, Communication, and Appearance.  Let’s talk about some of these so you get the idea about what Executive Presence really is, with some concrete action steps you can take to begin improving your own EP!   Let’s start with Sylvia Ann Hewlitt’s idea of Gravitas: Exuding confidence and “grace under fire” Acting decisively and “showing teeth” Showing integrity and “speaking truth to power” Demonstrating emotional intelligence Right-sizing your reputation Projecting vision Here are a few ideas on how to improve your “Gravitas”: o   Surround yourself with people who are better than you. o   Stick to what you know (don’t claim to know something you don’t know, if you are wrong it will cost you in the gravitas area.) o   Show humility o   Empower other’s presence to build your own o   Drive change, rather than be changed   Communication includee key verbal and non-verbal abilities (Sylvia Ann Hewlitt):  Superior speaking skills Ability to command a room    Ability to read an audience    Forcefulness and assertiveness    Sense of humor and the ability to banter    Body language Here are a few ideas on how to improve your Communication Skills: o   Ditch verbal crutches (um, like, you know, etc.)  Allow yourself to pause instead o   Broaden your small talk o   Get control of your voice o   Overprepare o   Learn to present without props (notes, etc.) o   Do not allow challenges to your authority to go unanswered  Appearance counts, largely as a filter through which your communication skills and gravitas become more apparent. Central to looking like a leader is (Sylvia Ann Hewlitt):  Being polished and well groomed Physical attractiveness, slim, fit Simple stylish clothes that position you for your next promotion  Here are a few tips for improving your appearance: o   It’s not how good your look, it is how appropriate you look for your audience. o   If it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t o   Stay in costume to stay in character.  (Don’t leave you suit jacked on the back of your door “in case” someone important comes by.) You never know when that will happen. o   Don’t let bangles and bling steal your show (anything that draws attention away from your message is NOT giving the best you a chance to shine.) o   When you are the CEO – you can make (and change) the rules.  Until then, while you are still on your path, you should understand the expectations of your workplace.   Time Machine:   In this segment each week we will give a few points about women that have accomplished a lot! We also will discuss a bit about what was happening to women during the time periods. Someone we think you would like to know more about is:   Helen Keller She was born with sight and hearing but around the time she was two she lost both to an illness they then called “brain fever” Although she had these two disabilities she was able to overcome them, help others with disabilities, and was appointed counselor of international relations for the American Foundation of Overseas Blind in her later life. Helen began learning from the educator Anne Sullivan. It took some time but she eventually was able to learn how to spell words with her fingers and also understand the objects that the words went with. After this she went on to learn speech, which took her about 25 years, so she would be able to communicate with everyone, so they would be able to understand her. In the website that is referenced below they talk about how Helen, “became a well-known celebrity and lecturer by sharing her experiences with audiences, and working on behalf of others living with disabilities.” She spent the rest of her life trying to help others in need.   Inspirational Quote of the Week: “I always did something I was a little not ready to do. I think that’s how you grow. When there’s that moment of ‘Wow, I’m not really sure I can do this,’ and you push through those moments, that’s when you have a breakthrough.” -Marissa Mayer, Yahoo CEO I sometimes run into quotes that have to do with something that I thought happened in my life, and I think that this quote touches on that for me. There have been many times in my college career where I thought I couldn’t do something, but I continued on with it and I ended up being able to complete many goals because I didn’t give up. This probably applies to other listeners as well, when you feel you have hit a rough patch, keep trying because once you’ve been able to get past that point, everything is better.   Book Review: Genuine driven women read lots of books!  We’ll make sure to recommend a book each week that will inspire you or help you on your journey to success! Suzanne Bates is the CEO of Bates, a firm with a mission to help leaders shape the world. As a coach to some of the world’s top executives, Suzanne’s passion is helping leaders align, engage, and move people to drive results for their organizations and the world around them. Her latest book All the Leader You Can Be: The Science of Achieving Extraordinary Executive Presence was published by McGraw Hill in March of 2016. In this episode, we talk about how to decide what you should do each day as a business owner (and what to leave out), why it's okay to start something new without a clear vision of the big picture, and a surprising way to create your own intellectual property (IP) using your intuition. We'll also share why "simple and powerful" is a beautiful combination, how to figure out your audience's agenda (and how this helps you dramatically improve), and why creating 'a-ha' moments for your audience may be easier than you think! A few bonus topics include why having a community accelerates your growth as a business owner and speaker, the #1 way to get booked for speaking gigs, why you should use crayons more, and much more! Enjoy!
