I never thought I'd get a mention. Thank you guys. I've been listening to the both of you since forever (Ted from PSC, Gareth since Mobile Tech Addicts) and have yet to be disappointed. I too am like Ted. I'm currently an RGN working in a private care home here in Barrow-in-Furness and have been a tech enthusiast since I got my Atari 800XL. I then moved on to the NES (not SNES) then all iterations of Gameboy. And you guys are all so relatable. I am always looking forward to both PSC and Tech Addicts for my daily walk to work. Keep up the great work and cheers from the North West! @CheapRetroGaming Thanks so much for sharing this interview, I've only watched a few videos from Slopes Game Room but I've enjoyed what I've seen thus far. For the podcast/interview here, I liked the different stories of what Daniel had gone through, such as almost getting scammed by the other channel, but thankfully avoiding that. I had also never heard of his epic Amico video that he had produced either. I hope to check it out later! Years ago I was really interested in that system because I liked the idea of the unique controller and the family friendly games, but of course, I have no interest in getting it now. It's sad how all that has panned out. Thanks again for your interview! Send us a textWhat if balancing the demands of a thriving IT business with personal well-being was as simple as training for a triathlon? Join us for an enlightening conversation with Nathan Whittacre, co-founder of Stimulus Technologies, as he shares his transformative journey from a childhood obsession with video games on an Atari 800XL to launching a successful IT and cybersecurity firm. Nathan's story is a testament to the power of self-taught skills and the evolving landscape of technology; his insights offer a roadmap for aspiring tech entrepreneurs navigating their own paths.Nathan opens up about the personal challenges of entrepreneurship, drawing parallels between the strategic planning required for endurance sports and business growth. He candidly recounts the early days of Stimulus Technologies, where neglecting self-care was a common pitfall, and shares practical strategies for maintaining mental well-being, like turning off work notifications and engaging in endurance sports. From the hilarious misstep of an illegal candy store to the gritty realities of juggling business decisions and personal health, Nathan's anecdotes provide both inspiration and cautionary tales for anyone building a business.Listeners will gain valuable insights from Nathan's experiences, particularly in the balancing act of setting career goals alongside personal ambitions. He discusses the intricacies of training for an Ironman and how the calculated risks and strategic decisions made in sports mirror those in business. For those eager to connect with Nathan, he offers a unique opportunity: reach out to him on LinkedIn for a chance to receive a physical copy of his book, "The CEO's Digital Survival Guide." Whether you're an aspiring entrepreneur or a seasoned professional, this episode promises a wealth of knowledge on navigating both the digital and entrepreneurial landscapes.Support the showFollow the Podcast on Social Media!Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/secunfpodcast/Twitter: https://twitter.com/SecUnfPodcastPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/SecurityUnfilteredPodcastYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@securityunfilteredpodcastTikTok: Not today China! In this episode, John and Dave talk about one of the most unique and innovative 8 bit gaming consoles of all time - the Vectrex. The Vectrex was a cool video game console that came out in the early 80s. It had a built-in screen that used vector graphics, which looked different from other games at the time. It also had overlays that you could put on the screen to make the games more colourful. It was one of a kind and still has fans today. John also talks about a potential remake of the Atari 800XL, Atari's 8 bit computer from 1983. Talking retro computers and more this week we are joined by Gareth from Pixel Addict magazine (he assures us he isn't here to oversee the sponsorship slot). We'll be taking a look at an Atari 800XL recreation, talking about how your mind was an essential part of the gaming experience and wondering what Atari are going to do with the very many old games they bought the rights to. All of that and the Community Question of the Week. Please check out Pixel Addict magazine at www.pixel.addict.media for the full run down on the latest issue. Gareth and the team have been hard at work putting together another great collection of articles to keep you up to date and entertained. 00:00 - Show Opening 08:14 - X-L-Ent Reproductions Story Link: https://revive-machines.com/index-en.html Additional Video Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCv2v08Amnc 29:40 - The Imagination Gap Story Link: https://old.reddit.com/r/thisweekinretro/comments/12rd36p/what_video_game_covers_deceived_you/ Additional Link: https://www.thegamer.com/retro-games-creepy-silent-hill-resident-evil-diablo/ 49:22 - Atic Atari Story Link: https://www.pcmag.com/news/atari-acquires-rights-to-100-plus-classic-pc-console-games 59:56 - Community Question of the Week

It's not a particularly good one, actually it's pretty poor in the grand scale of Radios, but it's not absolute garbage, and it does work as it's designed to. The thing that makes it iconic is the price. Where a Radio Amateur might have paid £300-£1000 for an equivalent product from a reputable manufacturer (Icon, Yeasu, Kenwood etc), I paid around £7 for this one from China (or £26 in the UK)! Which is astonishing when you consider this includes the Radio, Antenna, a Removable Li-ion Battery, two headsets, case, cradle dock and a charger. The reason these are popular with a lot of folks is that they can be easily programmed to use the Licence Free PMR446 frequencies, (although technically it's not legal to do so) so they are popular with off-roaders, paintballers, security companies etc. It's a hell of alot of tech of £7 - and even works as a rechargeable torch! …therein followed a long thread in our MeWe Group as listeners compared their memories and various pieces of Ham Radio kit! ------------------ Harry Myhre (“My-ree”) Amazon's New Home Internet Service Is One Step Closer to Becoming a Reality “Amazon plans to introduce home Internet service. And lucky enough to be in the first few months of deliveries, meaning that I started at 16K and eventually moved up to 48k, microdrives, et al. Only replaced 6 years later with an Atari ST - I sold the last one, one broke but I still have a Spectrum Plus 48K in the attic. Might have to dig it out, complete with tape recorder. What was your first foray into computing? Ted Salmon I think it was a BBC Micro (or Acorn) at home and IBM XT at work. Mid-80's. Adrian Brain Mine was the Sinclair ZX81, after having played with my (at the time) girlfriend's brother's ZX80, which he assembled himself. Phillip Wray Vic-20 for me. After polytechnic I became a software engineer so multiple other types of machines mainly DEC before PCs came along! Wayne Kelly Vic 20 for me too. We used to have zx80 and zx81s at school running on old massive black and white TVs. Always thought the zx80 looked better and more futuristic than the zx81. Chris Kelly The first I had at home was the ZX80 but before that I had used the Commodore PET to learn BASIC (Beginners' All Purpose Instruction Code) at college in the late 70's. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodore_PET?wprov=sfti1 Matt Jones I was a ZX81 guy! A while back I discovered a ZX81 emulator on the iPad, and managed to remember enough to write a simple program that ran first time with no syntax errors ! I was really impressed considering it was nearly 40 years ago and I was only about 12 at the time, and have had nothing to do with even trying to program these things since.

David Gedalia, Atari-controlled Telescope Listener Paul Somerfeldt sent me a blurb he found in a book titled "The Dobsonian Telescope" by David Kriege and Richard Berry. The book reads: "Computer-controlled Dobsonian telescopes entered amateur astronomy in the late 1980s. An outstanding early example was David Gedalia's 10-inch f/4.5 Dobsonian driven by an Atari 800XL computer, shown at the 1987 Riverside Telescope Makers Conference. With the Atari driving altitude and azimuth stepper-motors, the telescope would move automatically to coordinates entered on the computer’s keyboard. David was a third-year engineering student when he built this telescope." I sought out David to find out more about his Atari-controlled telescope. This interview took place on May 29, 2020. We're back for Season 2 of SoCool Podcast! Can Pancake and Robin resolve their differences about the Fishbowl? Will Yolo Monte Cristo finally get paid? This episode features the dramatic conclusion of the fight between Pancake and Robin that ended Season One, as they find themselves fighting each other in court. Robin spends $8000 on an old Atari 800XL computer that's 'locked out' of the internet to secure the integrity of the Fishbowl. Pancake spends a ton of money on Gucci shoes and sunglasses. And the boys do a Fishbowl using the new system for the movie Top Gun.
Ariel Arrieta knew he wanted to work in tech from the moment he got his first computer, an Atari 800XL, when he was 12 years old– a gift that changed his life. Today, he is cofounder and Managing Partner at NXTP Labs, an Argentine venture capital firm and accelerator that invests in early-stage tech startups. During the first Internet gold rush in the late 90s, Ariel was just starting his entrepreneurial career. He saw some of his businesses fail and others do really well. After he returned $2M to a friend who had invested $10K in his startup, he knew he wanted to be in startups for life. From there, he cofounded NXTP, which become one of the most active early-stage firms in Latin America, producing success stories like Auth0, their first portfolio unicorn. In this episode, I sit down with Ariel to talk about the evolution of Latin America’s tech ecosystem, advice for founders, and lessons learned from being an entrepreneur and investor. Since 2011, the Latin American ecosystem grew 100% yearly Ariel believes that Latin America’s ecosystem has evolved and has more mature markets than in the beginning part of the decade. From 2011 to 2016, the average investment each year was between $300M and $500M in the market. Comparing that period with that of 2016 to 2018, the number range has grown to between $500M and $1.1B. SoftBank’s most recent $5B Vision Fund investment will be essential to maintain this momentum in Latin America. Listen to this episode to learn more about the evolution of Latin America’s ecosystem, what allows it to thrive, and what’s keeping it back, according to Ariel. Raising $2M with a PowerPoint presentation In 1999, four years after the Internet became more common in Argentina, everyone wanted to invest in Internet startups. Ariel was immersed in that world, building an ISP. He raised $2M in exchange for 95% of his company off of a Powerpoint deck– a deal like this would be unheard of today. Find out how this moment made an entrepreneur out of Ariel, and the ups and downs he experienced from the Internet gold rush to the 2001 economic crisis in Argentina on this episode of Crossing Borders. Leaving the corporate world to work with startups Inspired by his friend who had invested $10K in Ariel’s company, which in four years he converted into a $2M return, Ariel decided to leave his job at Fox and become an investor. His focus became early-stage investments in tech companies and finding the right business model for scaling. That’s when Ariel and his team began NXTP as a means to fulfill their vision to scale these investment opportunities. Check out this episode of Crossing Borders to learn more about what it takes to scale startups and finding the right business model for that. “We had a track record as entrepreneurs, but not as fund managers” Fundraising for NXTP proved to be a challenge since most investors wouldn’t invest without a track record. The solution was crowdfunding $25K from friends within the entrepreneurial world. These contacts included Marcos Galperin from Mercado Libre and Alex Oxenford from OLX and Letgo, who– from a business standpoint at the time –were rivals. Listen to this episode to find out more about the entrepreneurs that came together to help Ariel and NXTP raise money for their fund. Ariel Arrieta has experienced both the golden days of the Internet boom, as well as the frustration of having to close a business due to macroeconomic factors like the 2001 economic crisis in Argentina. Those experiences have provided him with the resilience necessary to be an entrepreneur as well as an investor and mentor for other entrepreneurs at NXTP. Show Notes: [1:53] - About NXTP. Ed Meyer, physical chemistry experiments with Atari computers In the 1990s, Ed Meyer was a professor at DePaul University in Chicago, where he taught physical chemistry. In August 1990, The Journal of Chemical Education published his article, "An Inexpensive Computer Station for Undergraduate Laboratories Using the Atari 800XL" in which Ed showed how to interface the Atari controller ports with a 12-bit analog-to-digital converter chip to do chemistry experiments. (The article includes schematics and code in assembly language and BASIC.) From the article: "The kind of “interfacing” that has been emphasized in chemical education thus far in this country has been largely limited to using the “game paddle inputs” of a home com- puter, which allows the connection of any device that looks like a variable resistor to the computer. This approach has served admirably as an introduction to the power and versa- tility of inexpensive home computers as data collectors and handlers but suffers from significant disadvantages. The most obvious is the limitation to 8 bits of information; one would like to be able to obtain better precision than this provides (at half scale we can expect roughly 1% reproduc- ibility). Another is the requirement that the resistance of the transducer used be consistent with that of the game paddle it replaces. It is possible, without spending inordinate sums of money, to convert one of these home computers into a research- grade instrument with a resolution of 1 bit in 4096, if one knows a little about digital electronics. This article describes an interface for the Atari 800XL computer based on a 12-bit analogue-to-digital converter (ADC). We have incorporated six of them into “computer stations” in our upper track freshman laboratory. In general, the variables in question (e.g., temperature vs. time for coffee cup calorimeter experi- ments, pH vs. volume titrant) are plotted in real time on the monitor screen, and after collection of the data, a hard copy of the plot is produced on a printer, along with a table of the data. We use similar stations in our physical chemistry lab- oratory, where more sophisticated curve-fitting routines are included." This interview took place on July 9, 2018. "Once the thing is able to read a DC voltage, you have all kinds of opportunities. ... I mean the most obvious one is to use a pH meter to do acid-base titrations." Claus Buchholz and Lance Ward, ACE-80 Hello. Welcome to an interview-only episode of ANTIC The Atari 8-bit Computer Podcast. I am Randy Kindig. In 1985, Claus Buchholz and Lance Ward released the ACE-80 and ACE-80XL cartridges, which gave 80-column text capability to the Atari 800 and XL computers, respectively. These were released through their newly-formed company, Amiable Computer Products. Claus also developed a 256K upgrade for the Atari 800XL and wrote an article on converting Atari computer programs to the 5200. This interview took place on April 8, 2017.
