Jan Clarke has been a finalist in many awards across the decades. Teacher of the Year, Telstra Business Woman of the Year, and Nominated for Australian of the Year, but her proudest moment was when she pitched the Door 2 Story and won Founder of the Year in the Launch Victoria pitch event. Jan describes herself as an ‘old lady with a startup' but in reality she has always been telling stories, advocating on behalf of others for their voice to be heard. A passionate advocate for people on the inside of an eating disorder ‘Insiders', and their families on the outside, struggling to understand how to reach their loved on and be effective in supporting their recovery. With a Master of Education, Jan is recognised Australia wide as an expert in Developmental Education with close to 40 years experience in the delivery of programs across multiple sectors. Her expertise in the field of Eating Disorders has led to opportunities to consult, coordinate and lead teams of multiple stakeholders to deliver humane, sustainable and positive outcomes for people with complex eating disorders and their families. After a lifetime working in the Eating Disorder and Education fields, raising 4 fabulous adults and 9 wonderful grandchildren, Jan retired to the farm to enjoy the view from her verandah. It was Audrey who pulled on her heartstrings and got her off that porch and out of retirement. In 2019, after 6 years of ‘evidence based' mainstream eating disorder treatment, the arrival of adulthood and the independence that comes with this, Audrey had relapsed and her family was in the fight of their life to save her. For the first time in her eating disorder treatment, Audrey was given the space for her voice to be heard. . Working together, Audrey, her family, Jan and her treatment team supported this amazing Insider until she gained the insight, skills, strength and capacity to lead her own recovery. In 2021, Jan pitched an idea that was novel and untested. A program to help families and carers understand the ‘Inside' experience of their loves ones with eating disorders. What was intended to be a 6 week pilot program of education, skills and support, hosted by Jan and guided through the ‘Insider' experience, delivered unexpected outcomes. A beautiful symbiotic relationship between Insiders and carers ‘Outsiders' emerged. One where both sides felt validated, understood and supported. A relationship based on genuine connection, trust, honesty and commitment to one another was the result. Door 2 has evolved from this original idea into a comprehensive program that is backed by research through practice informed evidence. One of the questions I am asked often is how can we work together so I decided to dedicate this episode to sharing how we can partner and empower you in business and life with a series of powerful steps. A simple fact about me: Every morning I wake up with a happy heart because I have the privilige of partnering with women like YOU who want to take powerful steps in life. Watching them transform on our program's by tapping into the power of our community is life-changing and one of life's greatest gifts. Here is my story and why it can help you: Believing in herself when no-one else would, at just 24 years old Tory started her career in the deep end, founding Australia's most high-profile brand and communications agency, Torstar. Torstar didn't get its reputation from just hype, the results were real. With her trademark passion and integrity Tory led her team of 22 staff and 10 freelancers to deliver award winning work with the world's top-performing brands, celebrities and influencers including Zara, Nespresso, Seafolly, Sukin and Victoria's Secret. Impressively Tory's launch event for Zara in Sydney clocked over 22,000 people in attendance and was Zara's most successful retail launch event to date.Always one to trust her intuition, after 20 years Tory knew that it was time to start a new chapter. Her ah-ha moment came after she launched 3 of America's most powerful brands into Australia. At a sold-out launch event for Drew Barrymore's brand Flower Beauty organised by Tory, Drew shared with the crowd about how she survived tough times. Watching, Tory thought, ‘lady, I see you and raise you five. You know what, I'm done.'Shutting the doors to her agency in 2019, Tory launched Powerful Steps, an online community and platform for women making global impact. With five programs available, Tory nurtures and encourages C-suite level women to own their story, step into their power and take their careers to the next level.Through Powerful Steps Tory has helped transform the lives of over 600 women, including two recipients of ‘Telstra Business Woman of The Year', board directors, media executives and COO's. I am joined this week by my dear friend and one of the most empowering women I know, Tory Archbold. Tory is one of Australia's top female entrepreneurs and CEOs, she knows that just as our stories have the power to shape us, so we have the power to shape our stories. Having attained global recognition through her businesses Torstar and Powerful Steps, she is now stepping back to connect with the powerful stories of extraordinary women—their highs and lows, near misses and great wins. We sat down to talk about how to elevate your life, business and brand strategies and her new book, “Self-Belief is your Superpower” launching in April. Bio: There is a reason why Tory Archbold is one of the most connected women in Australia. As CEO and Founder of Powerful Steps, host of podcast Powerful Stories and founder of brand and communications agency Torstar, it comes as no surprise that Tory has met some of the world's most influential celebrities, entrepreneurs, and CEO's. But the reason for Tory's long-lasting connections is not for the many accolades she has under her belt. It's because of her authenticity and genuine care she shows for others. Through sharing her story of survival, of being a single mother determined to succeed, she has encouraged others along the way. Believing in herself when no-one else would, at just 24 years old Tory started her career in the deep end, founding Australia's most high-profile brand and communications agency, Torstar. “My nickname for many many many years professionally from one of my managers a lifetime ago, she said to me, ‘You are marshmallow covered steel!' I love that! I talk very much about that ability to be a brave leader, but a brave leader with heart. So I think it's balancing the authenticity of who we are as women and being proud of that. I think as a woman, when I sit at a board table and I'm the only woman you know, on a very senior team, I am proud of what I bring to the table. Of the diversity of thought, of the diversity of mind. I am in such awe and honour of my gut. And the feeling that I get about things that gives me the wisdom. But I'm also very conscious to make sure that I am seen to be able to deliver. I remember I had a manager who said to me, ‘Just because everybody likes you doesn't mean you are good at what you do.' And I said to him, ‘Well actually it's because everybody likes me that I'm good at what I do.' Jeanette Allom-Hill You are going to be blown away by this week's podcast with the one and only Jeanette Allom-Hill who is the 2020 Telstra Business Woman of the year. A podcast where this stunning woman shares her story with such vulnerability and strength, and such grace and grit. Her personal story is one of resilience and recovery and as a student of change, you will find her story moving and powerful. Jeanette is a results-driven leader and brings years of experience in developing, designing, and executing complex Transformation initiatives. She has worked in the private sector for over 15 years holding senior roles in Optus, NBN and Microsoft. Over the last 12 years she has dedicated her career to the public sector as a transformation expert, having held senior roles in NSW Treasury, working with the Secretary and in NSW Transport, being accountable to the Minister's office for Customer experience. Jeanette established and chaired the community of change professional for the NSW public sector that set the standard for government change management practice. Jeanette has also spent two years in top tier consulting with Boston Consulting Group as an advisor in implementation and sustainable change, working across multiple federal and state government organisations with senior leadership teams and ministers. Jeanette recently held the role of Chief Operations Officer for the Sunshine Coast Council, managing just over 2,300 employees with an organisational budget of $848 million. She is currently consulting into Federal government implementing the Australian Public Sector reforms for Prime Minister and Cabinet. In 2020 Jeanette was awarded the Telstra Businesswomen of the Year for the Public sector and Academia She has recently accepted a consulting role with Prime Minister and Cabinet and joined the NFP charity, No More Fake Smiles, and the Sunshine Coast Business Women's network as a member of the board. Jeanette describes herself as a brave leader with heart who leads with grace and grit and lives a life of wholehearted job. In the Self Love Podcast she shares her personal and professional story. As Brene Brown says so eloquently, “Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we will ever do.” Jeanette believes you can hold yourself back or heal yourself back together. Just stand up. Marvel at your life. Know how to respond, recover and thrive. Visualise standing in front of the fire. See the darkness, know there is light at the end of the tunnel. Make that decision and just show up. Jeanette shares her vulnerabilities around parenting and her relationship and her work. She said her big learning is to be kind, be a good leader, be brave with heart and keep safe. The behaviour you walk past is the behaviour you accept. Leadership is about being authentic and real, being brave with heart, having grace and grit and to speak up. Brene Brown says “Integrity is choosing courage over comfort. You choose what is right over what is fun, fast, or easy. And you choose to practice your values rather than simply professing them.” Jeanette mentions the book ‘Plan B' by Sheryl Sandberg and quotes her, “You are not born with a fixed amount of resiliency. Like a muscle, you can build it, and draw on it when you need it.” Her advice is to take time to heal, ask how you feel. How can you be unified as a family? Sleep in, relax, read a book. It's ok to let yourself rest. Lean into joy. Brene Brown says, ‘Now I can lean into joy, even when it makes me feel tender and vulnerable. Her final quote is “Do not choose the lesser life. do you hear me. do you hear me. choose the life that is. yours. the life that is seducing your lungs. that is dripping down your chin.” ― Nayyirah Waheed If you would like to follow Jeanette go to: Web: https://jeanetteallomhill.com.au/ No More Fake Smiles: https://www.nomorefakesmiles.com.au/ SELF LOVE PODCAST SPONSOR LINKS THANKYOU FOR LISTENING… If you would like to share your feedback on this podcast please head to my Facebook and Instagram pages below. #219 Did you know that awakening your heart and trusting your heart wisdom can allow you to understand yourself and your position in life more accurately? The heart speaks a different language, one the intellectual mind does not understand. But if you desire to, you can learn this language and receive the wisdom and joy that an awakened heart will bring. It's not difficult. And in this episode, I welcome Josie Thomson to teach us about that and so much more. As a former learning and development manager of a blue-chip international mining giant, and now a multi-award winning life coach, author of The Wise Advocate (the inner voice of strategic leadership), two-time cancer survivor, and singer mother, Josie has been a force of transformation in the lives of many. What holds the threads of Josie's work altogether is a commitment to personal transformation. Her work is to help others “transcend limitations, transform wounds into love, power, forgiveness, and gratitude.” In this interview, Josie shares valuable advice on why we may not be able to change what's happening around us or to us, and how we can take control of how we respond. Josie is a big believer in miracles can happen, having witnessed them and experienced them herself after returning “to life” after flat-lining twice. This episode will highlight neuroscience insights, coupled with her personal experience and some experiential practices for you to connect in with your own inner loving guide. Enjoy! I'm delighted to welcome two guests for this episode of the For Love & Money Podcast: Jade Collins and Alanna Bastin-Byrne from Femeconomy. Femeconomy educates consumers, budget owners and business owners on how purchasing decisions can create gender equality. Femeconomy certified businesses have at least 30% of women on the Board of Directors or are 50% female owned. So far over 850 brands have met Femeconomy's criteria. More on that in the episode. For now, let me introduce my guests: Jade Collins has 20 years' global experience in corporate executive Human Resources and management consulting roles in the Mining, Energy and Aerospace industries, leading large scale, complex multi-million-dollar change management programs. Jade finds the combination of her HR, Psychology and MBA qualifications and her leadership experience is invaluable for creating networks and engaging others to increase gender equality in leadership across industries. Jade was a member of the Queensland Government's Strategic Advisory Group for the Toward Gender Parity: Women on Boards Initiative and the 2019 CQU Alumni of the Year for Social Impact for her work with Femeconomy. Alanna Bastin-Byrne has over 20 years' experience in Marketing, Communications and Community Development leadership in the UK and Australia. The diversity of Alanna's leadership experience has been instrumental in building Femeconomy's engaged community to advance gender equality. In 2018 Alanna was announced as one of 80 Women2Watch in Business Disruption in US, Canada, Australia and Europe. In 2020 Alanna was a Telstra Business Woman of the Year finalist and Griffith University's Entrepreneur in Residence. We chat about the female economy. What it means for businesses and for society more widely. Despite the progress that we've made over the years, some of the stats that Jade and Alanna share are mind-blowing and really tell a very powerful story of unrealised opportunity. Here are some of the areas of discussion we get into: Why Femeconomy was started – the purpose inspiring the business Why we need more balance in leadership representation: the value of lived experience; and why female representation is not a zero sum game The economic value exercised by women's spending power The reality of female representation of CEOs in ASX companies and on ASX boards The stats that tell a surprising story about Australia's position when it comes to gender equality within businesses. NOTE: One of the stats provided was out of date - at about the 22.45 minute mark of the interview, the stat references under 5 per cent of female CEOs are represented at ASX 200 organisations. Update to this with a couple of stats: Zero new female CEOs appointed to ASX 200 companies in 2021 https://www.afr.com/work-and-careers/management/asx-200-companies-failed-to-appoint-a-single-female-ceo-last-year-20210907-p58piz Just six per cent of ASX300 companies employ female CEOs https://www.businessnewsaustralia.com/articles/-wake-up-call---just-six-per-cent-of-asx300-companies-employ-female-ceos.html How Femeconomy are building a movement to educate, advocate for and support women-owned businesses The progress that has been made and the role of culture in society in empowering or limiting the rate of progress Why female-led businesses are more profitable than their male-led counterparts If your business is female-owned, led, has at least 30% of women on the Board of Directors or are 50% female owned, then you'll want to check out Femeconomy. My guest is Tammy Barton, managing director of Australian business MyBudget and she told me that when we transform our money it can transform our life. And yet while there's a lot of information available to us around mental or physical health, there's not a lot enough conversations about financial health. Today I give her a call to talk about how we can transform our relationship with money. Tammy Barton is one of Australia's most influential business women and female entrepreneurs. She's the founding director of MyBudget, a service that she started as a home-based business in South Australia more than 22 years ago (1999), and which has since grown into one of Australia's most trusted and recognised financial services brands. Today, the business employs more than 270 staff and has helped more than 110,000 clients. Tammy is a respected authority on personal budgeting and money management, who regularly features in the media as a personal finance expert and influential entrepreneur. In this episode, I interview Gillian Horton, the owner of Colleen's Lingerie and Swimwear and the Co-Owner of Treat Me Treasure Me. Colleen’s offers post-surgery pocketed bras and swimwear along with a wide range of large cup and front opening bras; gifts; turbans; wigs and beautiful leisurewear. After treatment for breast cancer, Gillian got back to a toxic government job in 2013 and one day looked out the window and asked herself, “I’m never ever going to get this minute back. What I’m I doing?” After a shop that specialized in offering bras and products for women after breast cancer surgery was shutting down in January 2014, she decided to buy it at age 54. They have the widest range in Australia and only 10% of sales are currently online with no focus on it yet. They moved from an industrial location into the city in between two hospitals, and even with rent doubling, the move propelled growth. Sales have doubled in six years and the team has grown from 1.8 full-time employees to 6. She funded the business from an initial bank loan and then bootstrapped from profits. Gillian felt she had succeeded when she was recognized as an expert in her field and was nominated for the Telstra Business Woman of the Year award. She says the hardest thing about growing a small business is knowing when to let go. The one thing she says she would tell herself on day one of starting out is, “Strap yourself in. It’s going to be a hell of a roller coaster ride” Tune in to learn more from Gillian. This Cast Covers: Making money from offering products that positively impact the lives of women. Being in a niche market where they are among very stores that offer post-surgery pocketed bras and swimwear. Generating 90% of their sales from their traditional brick and mortar store with 10% coming from their online store. From disillusioned public servant to a successful entrepreneur who overcame cancer. How she ended up owning the only bra shop she could ever go to. Taking over to grow the customer base and revenues by a hundred percent within six years. Being proud to be recognized as an expert and influencer in her field. Determining what your customers’ pain points are and offering solutions to them coupled with exceptional customer service. Investing very little in Facebook and Google ads but seeking an expert to help her implement them. Buying the business with credit financing and growing it purely from profits. Considering franchising as an option for opening up new locations. How and why they moved from their previous location into the city. Serving women who have undergone breast cancer-related surgery and normal women. Holding true to her own vision by working on her own resistance. In this episode, I interview Anna Ross, the Founder, and CEO of Kester Black, an Australian-made, cruelty-free and vegan lipstick, and nail polish brand. She is also the Co-Founder and Creative Director of Arné Skincare. Anna started out with a small jewelry business in Melbourne in 2009 when she was just 19 years old. To increase her product range, she added nail polish which soon tripled revenue, so she dropped the jewelry to focus on starting a leading ethical beauty brand. Now with lipstick added to the range, and warehouses in Melbourne, Wanaka, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, they also sell through distributors in Germany and Malaysia. Four years ago, sales were 10% online and 90% wholesale which has now been flipped to 89% online. The business tripled its revenues in the last three years, and in 2020 is growing 3% to 5% every week. She started with 1 full-time employee, peaked at 9 in 2017, and is now down to 2.5. She won the Telstra Business Woman of the Year and that went to her head so much that she added expensive overheads with an office and more team members before meditation woke her up. Anna testifies that she has had great Facebook ad success and is currently investing $50,000 a month, and shares a key contact to use at a Facebook agency. She describes a recession phenomenon called “The Lipstick Effect” which affects businesses in her industry. She funded her business solely from profits though she recently walked away from a $500,000 investment, turning it into a short term loan instead. Anna felt she has succeeded when this year cash flow improved and she says that the hardest thing about growing a small business is staff. She shares that the one thing she would tell herself on day one of starting out in business is, “Just do it. If I knew what I know now, I would never have done it” Stay tuned for more on Anna Ross’ amazing small business ownership journey. This Cast Covers: Being an Australian business located in the very beautiful Wanaka, New Zealand. A leading ethical beauty brand that sells polish and lipstick globally. Diversifying from wholesale brick and mortar to increase their online sales to about 89% of total sales. The Lipstick Effect: How the sales of lipstick and nail polish skyrocket during an economic recession. How they warehouse their products themselves and distribute them to retailers. Their presence in 300 stores in Australia, Germany, and Switzerland with strong partnerships with great wholesalers. Why she’s been careful all along in making sure that they own their intellectual properties themselves. From working in retail to starting Kester Black as a jewelry business and diversifying into other products. Growing exponentially by increasing its revenues by up to 915%. How she got a big head from winning the Telstra Business Woman of the Year award. The mistake she made by hiring more staff than she needed. Tripling their revenues in the last three years and growing by about 3% to 5% every week. Using Fulfill By Amazon and the numerous complexities that come with it. Working towards hiring someone to run the day to day activities of the business or exiting. How she has leveraged the power of Instagram and Facebook to sell more. Starting the business with $50 and growing it purely from cash flow. The lessons she learned from trying to get investor/Equity funding. Doing their R&D cost-free through their manufacturers. The stressful experience she went through when she found out that nail polish is classified as “Dangerous goods”, and cannot be shipped by post. Keeping a close eye on the financials of the business to ensure long term growth. The importance of being more of a manager to your team than the business owner. Looking for people who actually wanna work in your business and can share in your vision. How understanding herself and how people perceive her helped her grow personally and in business. Using Shopify and Asana to help streamline their daily operations. Additional Resources: KesterBlack Crystal Knows Harvey The E-Myth By Michael E. Tenille Bentley is an internationally award winning conscious business woman, board director, a sound scientist and global change agent. She is a transformative speaker, educator as well as an author of two thought provoking books “Digital Consciousness and Emotional literacy for kids” and the Managing Director & Founder of The Emotional Literacy & Mindfulness Academy for Kids. She founded The Emotional Literacy & Mindfulness Academy for Kids a global program that is teaching kids advanced skills in emotional intelligence from the ages of 5 – 9 years old. She began from a position of looking at the world, the damage we, as a human family are causing, the chaos, the violence, the fast paced dopamine overdosed world of digital and how we are seeing our kids (our future caretakers of this planet) being handed all of this. When you take a look at the world it can be overwhelming to try and figure out where does one start with undoing this mess we created? Her answer was with children, aligning this with her love of neuroscience and the proven outcomes of early intervention. This formed the basis of The Emotional Literacy and Mindfulness Academy for Kids. Specifically focusing on ages 5 – 9 as the key developmental phase where we can make the biggest impact and imprint them with essential life skills and behaviours that assist them later in life, which in turn, will assist our home that is crying out for our help….our planet earth. She has had the pleasure of meeting and spending time with the great minds of Oprah, Richard Branson, Deepak Chopra, Dr John Demartini, Don Miguel Ruiz, Dr Bruce Lipton and many more. Tenille consistently challenges her level of conscious and subconscious awareness, delving deep into philosophy, mythology, human behaviour, quantum physics, neuroplasticity and neuroscience in her spare time.
