In this episode we are celebrating the career to date of Duncan Forrester.Duncan is a globally experienced Chief Marketing and Communications Officer and consultant who's worked with many of the automotive industry's most famous brands. He cut his teeth at BMW and Volvo in the UK, before being appointed as the global head of Product and Brand Communication for Volvo Cars in Sweden, soon after the Geely acquisition, and relaunching the Volvo brand with the then all-new XC90 and the other models that followed. He then spent a period of time running Corporate Communications for McLaren Automotive in Woking before the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of a small team launching an entirely new and innovative car company – Polestar. With that unique experience, he started the first communication consultancy specifically supporting start-up and electric vehicle brands, initially creating the PR and Communications function for INEOS Automotive and their Grenadier, and then as Chief Communications Officer for Volta Trucks. And more recently in the same role for Automobili Pininfarina, with their all-electric Battista hypercar – one of the fastest and most powerful road cars ever built. And he's now working with the electrification of the vast Ultra Class mining haul trucks, so he really has worked on the decarbonisation of vehicles at every end of the automotive spectrum. In our conversation we talk about how he knew from an early age that he wanted to get into the automotive industry and he demonstrated great effort and persistence to make that happen. When opportunities arose, he had his own north star which helped him to decline some that weren't aligned. As a result he has amassed a significant amount of experience in the specialised field of launching startup EV brands.Paul Flitter and Paul Kirby had both mentioned Duncan in their recent episodes, highlighting what a supportive mentor he is. I was delighted to get the opportunity to get to know him myself through this conversation and to be able to share his story and experience with you.Connect with DuncanLinkedIn Profile WebsiteAbout AndyI'm an experienced business leader and a passionate developer of people in the automotive finance industry, internationally.During over twenty five years, I have played a key role in developing businesses including Alphabet UK, BMW Corporate Finance UK, BMW Financial Services Singapore, BMW Financial Services New Zealand and Tesla Financial Services UK.At the same time, I have coached individuals and delivered leadership development programmes in 17 countries across Asia, Europe and North America.I started Aquilae in 2016 to enable “Fulfilling Performance” in the mobility industry, internationally.Learn more about Fulfilling PerformanceCheck out Release the handbrake! Carvana has released its top-selling electric vehicles (EVs) for the first half of 2023, with the Tesla Model 3 ranking first and the Nissan LEAF second. Carvana's total EV sales have seen a significant increase of 786% over the past five years, indicating a growing interest in affordable EV ownership. The company offers over 46 different EV models, with more than 40% priced under $25,000, making them relatively affordable. Volvo is reportedly planning to launch its first-ever people mover in China by the end of the year. A heavily camouflaged prototype, resembling the Zeekr 009 electric people mover, has been spotted in the country. The Volvo people mover is expected to share exterior styling and underpinnings with the Zeekr 009. It is rumored to feature a similar LED lighting arrangement to Volvo's EX30 and EX90 electric SUVs. It remains uncertain whether the vehicle will be released in other markets. Tesla is laying off some of its electric-vehicle battery workers at its Shanghai plant in China. The company has not provided an official reason for the layoffs, but there are suggestions that automation equipment may be replacing the affected workers. These workers are involved in building battery modules and packs for Tesla vehicles. While some employees have been given the option to transfer to another department at the factory, the exact number of layoffs is unknown . Tesla has unveiled its latest V4 Supercharger station in France, featuring longer cables and improved access with a more ergonomic pile placement. The station includes one charging pile dedicated to EV trailers and 11 others covered by metal structures that will eventually have solar roofs installed. The V4 Supercharger stations have the potential to offer faster charging speeds than the current V3 Superchargers, thanks to their theoretical maximum of 1MW. Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös has announced that the company will blacklist any customer attempting to sell the new Rolls Spectre, the brand's first electric car, for profit. The announcement was made during the launch of the new car, which is set to be delivered later this year. Some dealers in Britain, who have sold the car at inflated prices, are reportedly unhappy with the brand's remarks. Rolls-Royce has implemented a rigorous testing program to ensure the car's quality. Automobili Pininfarina has introduced the Battista Edizione Nino Farina, an exclusive edition of the all-electric hypercar model Battista. Each of the 150 units of the Battista Edizione Nino Farina takes 10 weeks to assemble, involving up to 1,340 hours of handcrafting. This special edition pays tribute to Battista "Pinin" Farina, the founder of Carrozzeria Pininfarina, and his nephew Nino Farina, the first-ever Formula 1 champion. The Battista Edizione Nino Farina, like other limited versions of the Battista, offers exceptional performance at a high price point. Instavolt has revealed plans for the UK's largest rapid electric vehicle charging hub, located near Winchester. The "Super Hub" will include on-site amenities, solar arrays, and energy storage. It aims to install a significant number of rapid chargers for cars, towing vehicles, and heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) to contribute towards the goal of installing 10,000 rapid chargers in the UK by 2030. The exact number of chargers and the opening date are currently being finalized. Instavolt's Super Hub is the first of several planned hubs, providing reliable and easy-to-use chargers on the strategic road network. Nio will launch its sleek ET5 electric sedan in the UK at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed. The ET5 features a 12.8-inch center infotainment and controls screen and Nio's personal voice assistant Nomi. It was first delivered in Europe in March and is equipped with two motors producing 360 kW of power, 700 Nm of peak torque, and capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 4 seconds. The availability of the ET5 in right-hand-drive configurations means Nio's vehicles will be accessible to the UK, Australia, and New Zealand marke ts. The UK's grid operator, National Grid, aims to reduce carbon emissions through smart charging for electric vehicles (EVs). Their Future Energy Scenarios report promotes aligning EV charging with periods of low demand and high renewable power supply, particularly during sunny and windy days.  VinFast, a Vietnamese carmaker, has unveiled three new electric cars and electric bike models. The new electric cars include the VF 3, designed for the Vietnamese market, as well as the VF 6 and VF 7 SUVs. Technical details and prices for the VF 3 have not been disclosed. The VF 6 is available in two variants, offering 130 kW or 150 kW electric motors with a 399 km WLTP range. The VF 7, equipped with all-wheel drive and an additional 110 kW electric motor, has a 450 km range on a single charge and a battery capacity of 75.3 kWh. Giovanni Palazzo has been appointed to lead Volkswagen Group's charging infrastructure and energy business, overseeing the Elli and Electrify America charging services. Palazzo's plans include expanding the fast charging network, developing a smart energy platform, and introducing new business models globally. He aims to strengthen collaboration between the brands and focus on load distribution, energy market optimization, and energy trading solutions. Volkswagen intends to consolidate its global activities in charging infrastructure and energy services under the Charging and Energy business field.

Quick Nick is here! As temperatures dropped to below freezing in Texas last month, coal and natural gas power plants, which supply a bulk of the state's electricity, were knocked offline. " ays FutureCAr: "Now the state is getting some help from Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk. Bloomberg reports that Tesla subsidiary Gambit Energy Storage LLC is building a giant energy storage battery that will be connected to the state's power grid. The massive battery could power roughly 20,000 homes on a hot summer day.   The 100-megawatt energy storage project is being built in Angleton, Texas, according to Bloomberg. Bloomberg reported that workers at the construction site discouraged onlookers and attempted to keep the equipment under cover. But a Tesla logo could be seen on a worker's hard hat and public documents confirmed Tesla's role in the project. Bloomberg uncovered property records on file with Brazoria County in Texas show Gambit Energy Storage shares the same address as a Tesla facility near the company's factory in Fremont, California. In addition, a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission lists Gambit as a Tesla subsidiary. The main plant is to be focussed on electric vehicles, which included the production of lithium-ion cells." reports electrive; "According to Daimler, electric drive and battery technology will be developed in the technology competence centre. The group said that this underpins the strategy announced in October 2020 and that it will invest a three-digit million amount in the project. The group also says that the next generation of electric motors will be developed “in-house” at the campus and “equipped with inverters and high-voltage technology”. Assembly of battery systems for the EQS, which is being built 20 kilometres away at the Sindelfingen vehicle plant, will already start this year at the Hedelfingen plant. The latest investment reinforces Rimac Automobili’s status as a leader in high-performance electrified vehicle technologies.   Since Porsche’s first investment in 2018, the team at Rimac Automobil has doubled to nearly 1,000 people, and the Croatian technology company has continued to produce some of the world’s most advanced electrified powertrains, batteries, infotainment and other components related to electrification. Some of the comments made by Tesla to the DMV are bringing some confusion to people, as they could be interpreted as contradicting what Tesla and Elon Musk are saying publicly." writes electrek: "Some of what Tesla is saying in its communications to the DMV are confusing people as it appears to contradict what Elon Musk has been saying, which is that Tesla’s FSD package will lead to a trully “full self-driving level 5 system” by the end of the year. At the core of the controversy is a letter that Eric Williams, Tesla’s associate general counsel, sent to Miguel Acosta, chief of the autonomous vehicles branch at the California Department of Motor Vehicles, over some questions that the latter had about Tesla’s FSD Beta."   https://electrek.co/2021/03/08/teslas-communications-with-dmv-over-full-self-driving-are-released-and-they-bring-some-confusion/     You can listen to all 1014 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER (PARTNER) eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY FROM MILLBROOK COTTAGES – 5* GOLD SELF CATERING COTTAGES (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER) IAIN SEAR (PARTNER)   ADRIAN BOND (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREW GREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDY NANCARROW AND LILIAN KASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BLUNDERBUSS JONES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRISTOPHER BARTH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ED CORTREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERIC HANSEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEINRICH LIESNER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAVIER CARMELO DÍAZ PÉREZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JOHN SCHROEDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHANIEL FREEDMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAYMOND ROWLEDGE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROBERT GRACE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. Show #446   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 16th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   EVGO INSTALLS BATTERY STORAGE SYSTEMS ACROSS EV CHARGING NETWORK "[EVgo] announced that it has completed or has in construction 14 battery storage systems located at 11 fast charging stations." reports Petrol Plaza website: "This is the largest deployment of battery storage systems at public fast charging stations in the U.S. Battery storage systems can offer relief to demand charge rate structures that inhibit fast charging deployment and EV adoption, accoring to the company. Although EV fast charging stations do not always require a grid upgrade, as station sizes and power rating increase, energy storage will become an important tool, offering load balancing and mitigating distribution grid upgrade costs. With more than 1,100 fast chargers in 34 states, EVgo electrified more than 75 million miles for electric vehicle drivers across the country in 2018."   https://www.petrolplaza.com/news/21700   STRICTER CO2 EMISSION STANDARDS FOR CARS AND VANS SIGNED OFF BY THE COUNCIL "The EU is making road transport cleaner by setting strict new carbon dioxide emissions standards for cars and light commercial vehicles. The aim of the regulation adopted by the Council today is to ensure that from 2030 onwards new cars will emit on average 37.5% less CO2 and new vans will emit on average 31% less CO2 compared to 2021 levels. Between 2025 and 2029, both cars and vans will be required to emit 15% less CO2. These are EU-wide fleet targets. The CO2 reduction effort will be distributed among manufacturers on the basis of the average mass of their vehicle fleet."   https://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/press/press-releases/2019/04/15/stricter-co2-emission-standards-for-cars-and-vans-signed-off-by-the-council/   TESLA GIGAFACTORY 3 PHASE 1 ENTERS ROOF PAVING STAGE "A recent flyover of Gigafactory 3 has revealed that the upcoming electric car factory continues to follow an incredibly rapid buildout, with the first phase of the project seemingly entering the roof paving stage." according to Simon over at Teslarati: "Compared to previous videos taken of the site, more roof trusses are now in place, and some workers are now paving some areas of the general assembly building’s steel roof structure. More steel foundations appear to have been laid as well, and the framework of what seems to be a multi-story section is currently being built. This pace serves the project well, considering that Shanghai official Chen Mingbo has given the project a May 2019 target date for completion."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-gigafactory-3-general-assembly-building-roof-paving/   MG EZS ELECTRIC CAR COMING TO AUSTRALIA IN 2020 "MG Motor’s Australian factory distributor has confirmed it will launch a fully electric version of its increasingly popular petrol-fired ZS small SUV during the course of 2020." writes CarAdvice.com.au today: "The Mazda CX-3-sized MG eZS will give the company a rival for the just-launched Hyundai Kona Electric, the Hyundai Ioniq, and the Nissan Leaf in Australia’s fledgling EV market. It will be China’s first EV in Australia, and should be a bit of a marketing coup. The eZS has a 110kW/350Nm electric motor, powered by a 45.6kWh lithium battery pack, with a claimed NEDC driving range of 335km. That’s about 50 per cent less than the long-range Hyundai Kona with its larger 64kWh battery capacity, but thereabouts with the Leaf."   https://www.caradvice.com.au/747869/mg-ezs-electric-car-coming-to-australia-in-2020/   EV SCARE CAMPAIGN 'FLIES IN FACE OF FACT' Staying in Australia "A toxic scare campaign surrounding electric vehicles in the first week of the federal election campaign “flies in the face of fact” and risks seeing Australia fall even further behind the rest of the world, according to the chair of a senate inquiry into the technology." says website InnovationAus.com.au today: "Following the unveiling of Labor’s electric vehicle policy package, which included a target for half of all new vehicle sales to be electric by 2030, a series of government ministers launched a widespread scare campaign against the policies. But Labor’s 50 percent target is just for new car sales, not used and second hand sales, and would lead to about 15 percent of Australia’s entire car fleet being electric by 2030." Prime Minister Scott Morrison: "“I’ll tell you what, it’s not going to tow your trailer. It’s not going to tow your boat. It’s not going to get you out to your favourite camping spot with your family,”   https://www.innovationaus.com/2019/04/EV-scare-campaign-flies-in-face-of-fact   ASTON MARTIN TESTS MARKET FOR HIGH-PRICED EVS WITH RAPIDE E Automotivenews Europe brings us: "Aston Martin is testing the market for very expensive full-electric cars with the Rapide E sedan, which was unveiled on Tuesday at the Shanghai auto show. Aston Martin will build just 155 units of the Rapid E, which will be the automaker's only battery-powered car until the UK automaker revives its Lagonda brand as an all-electric marque early next decade. The Rapid E's driving range of 322 km (200 miles) under Europe’s WLTP testing cycle is short compared with other EVs coming to the market. The upcoming Porsche Taycan has a 500-km (311-mile) range), for example. Aston Martin has countered the Rapide E’s limited range by equipping it with an 800-volt battery system that allows more rapid charging. The sedan can be charged to 80 percent of capacity from empty in 30 minutes. Andy Palmer said Aston Martin customers are not looking for blistering supercar performance, but they are "conscious about what Teslas can achieve."   https://europe.autonews.com/shanghai-auto-show/aston-martin-tests-market-high-priced-evs-rapide-e   IN QUEST FOR ELECTRIC SUPERCARS, ENGINEERS HEAD TO START-UPS Reuters has been tracking where high profile EV talent is going: "Rene-Christopher Wollmann, head of Mercedes-AMG’s 2.75 million euros (£2.38 million) Project One supercar programme, has moved to a job at Automobili Pininfarina in a sign that innovation in high end electric sportscars is shifting towards small start-ups." "Premium or high-performance electric sports cars are equivalent to the Ferraris and Lamborghinis of the conventional auto world. These so-called supercars can cost anything from about $100,000 up into the millions of dollars and include Tesla’s upcoming Roadster Founder Series, which will sell for over $200,000 and the Rimac Concept Two, priced in the region of $2 million. The emerging role of start-ups in the development of the premium electric market harks back to an era over a century ago when talented engineers like Gottlieb Daimler and Ferdinand Porsche were able to launch sportscar brands on modest budgets."   https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-supercar-startups-focus/in-quest-for-electric-supercars-engineers-head-to-start-ups-idUKKCN1RR0GD   IRELAND: ELECTRIFI REBUILDS ELECTRIC CARS WITH TESLA PARTS "The Irish startup Electrifi is investing 50 million euros over the next three years to convert classic luxury cars into electric vehicles using Tesla components. Yet, Electrifi is working on a range of more affordable electric cars for 2020 as well." writes Nora Manthey for electrive.com: "Electrifi though is starting small and will concentrate on converting the most high-end cars from Ferrari, Lamborghini and Aston Martin to electric vehicles using motors and batteries from Tesla. Prices will start at a Formula 1 worthy 750,000 euros"   https://www.electrive.com/2019/04/15/ireland-crowley-carbon-to-build-electric-cars-as-electrifi/   CAR MANUFACTURERS TURN TO ELECTRIFICATION TO TURN THE TIDE IN 2019, "car manufacturers are hoping to spur market development by turning to the electric vehicle market. Electric vehicle shipments are predicted to arrive at 5.15 million in 2019, reaching a YoY growth of 28%. YoY growth of new energy vehicles alone ( excluding hybrid electric vehicles) is expected to hit 51%." says Associated Press today: "Car makers are proactively carrying out development of electric vehicles and speeding up rollouts of new car models in anticipation of global energy-saving and emission-reducing trends, as well as the policies implemented by various countries. Car makers are leaning towards presenting electric vehicles as a brand new product series."   https://www.apnews.com/Business%20Wire/87a55d76420046869be349b89d0b80d0   PLUG AND PLAY: 1980 COMUTA-CAR And finally from BarnFinds.com: "Folks who like cars like this 1980 Comuta-Car are in a league of their own. I know because I’m one of them and I’m at least as unusual as these cars are. This one can be found here on craigslist in Nappanee, Indiana, just southeast of South Bend. The seller is asking $3,300 for this car. "The Comuta-Car, as most of you know, was an upgrade and continuation of the CitiCar with bigger, battery-filled bumpers both front and rear. The cute factor was all but gone once the bumpers became battery storage but at least you weren’t sitting on hoards of batteries under the seat and the range was extended a bit. Another upgrade would be the sliding side windows compared to the snap-out windows on the CitiCar. The seller says that this car has the 48-volt motor and it’s new, and also that it has 8 six-volt batteries so it must be the SV-48 model. A top speed of just under 40 mph and a 40-mile range isn’t much for either category but some owners have upgraded their CitiCars and Comuta-Cars to 1.5 to 2 times the range and 50+ mph"   https://barnfinds.com/plug-and-play-1980-comuta-car/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #442   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 13th April 2019. ELON TWEETS We'll kick off with a series of tweets by Elon Musk and because I'm being selfish I'll start with the one which is of most interest to RHD buyers in the UK. I actually missed this tweet but it was sent to me by podcast supporter David Finch...   "Model 3 drive unit & body is designed like a commercial truck for a million mile life. Current battery modules should last 300k to 500k miles (1500 cycles). Replacing modules (not pack) will only cost $5k to $7k." "Ahem RHD"   Journalist Tom Randall: "Tesla shares fell after Nikkei reported that Panasonic is freezing spending on more Gigafactory expansion. Panasonic said it reached 35 GWh/yr capacity in March. That's already enough to build over 500k Model 3/yr+Powerwalls—more than Tesla can handle" Elon replied: "Incorrect. Pana cell lines at Giga are only at ~24GWh/yr & have been a constraint on Model 3 output since July. No choice but to use other suppliers for Powerwall/Powerpack cells. Tesla won’t spend money on more capacity until existing lines get closer to 35GWh theoretical."   As for Full Self Driving Elon said: "Please note that the price of the Tesla Full Self-Driving option will increase substantially over time" "Starting May 1"   On the subject of reliability: "Model 3 drive unit & body is designed like a commercial truck for a million mile life. Current battery modules should last 300k to 500k miles (1500 cycles). Replacing modules (not pack) will only cost $5k to $7k."   On the subject of Full Self Driving, Patreon Supporter Cesar Trujillo said to me: "Shooooot. With all the Tesla news I wondered if FSD autopilot would come down in price again. I looked on my car and on my Tesla account and there is no where to upgrade anymore. I should have done it when it was cheap. I only bought the enhanced autopilot not full self driving during the fire sale."   And on the AI podcast: "“Buying a car today is an investment into the future. I think the most profound thing is that if you buy a Tesla today, I believe you are buying an appreciating asset – not a depreciating asset. The cars currently being produced, with the hardware currently being produced, are capable of full self-driving.”   GM REPORTEDLY WON’T INVEST IN ELECTRIC PICKUP TRUCK STARTUP RIVIAN "A proposed tie-up between the largest U.S.-based automaker and a fledgling company trying to make an electric pickup truck may be doomed, based on a new report from Bloomberg. The publication reported Friday that General Motors and Rivian have ended discussions that would have had the Detroit-based auto giant give the startup a healthy cash infusion to bring its products to market." says Zac fro InsideEVs.com: "The deal would have placed GM alongside Amazon as a major investor in the startup manufacturer, as the tech giant announced a strategic investment with Rivian in February that was part of a $700 million equity round. GM’s role was reportedly to help Rivian with manufacturing and parts purchasing, while GM would have received the engineering it needed to make an electric pickup truck before key rivals Ford and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles would be able to. Trucks are essential to all three of those automakers’ profits."   https://insideevs.com/gm-rivian-electric-pickup-truck-amazon/   TESLA MODEL 3 LEASE PROGRAM OPENS DOOR TO FUTURE RIDE-HAILING NETWORK "Tesla has officially launched its Model 3 leasing program to include any variant of the all-electric midsize sedan." says Teslarati: "Unlike traditional agreements, the Model 3 vehicles under lease will not be available for purchase once the lease matures. Tesla intends to use those vehicles as part of its coming autonomous ride-hailing network, a service dubbed as the Tesla Network. The decision to maintain ownership of its leased Model 3 fleet for such future use indicates Tesla’s high level of confidence in the development of its Full Self-Driving program. Any revenue lost from not offering its used cars for purchase is clearly expected to be generated through other profitable means"   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-lease-ride-hailing-network/   TESLA OPENS ORDERS FOR CHEAPER MODEL 3 VERSION IN EUROPE AND CHINA "Along with the changes to its vehicle lineup last night, Tesla also opened orders for a cheaper version of the Model 3 in European markets and China." writes Fred at Electrek: "After removing the Mid-Range and Long-Range RWD Model 3, Tesla is now offering only Standard Range Plus along with the Long Range AWD and Performance versions. Tesla says that the other versions can still be ordered as “off-the-menu” items, but that’s now Tesla’s main Model 3 lineup. For European markets, the introduction of the Standard Range Plus version results in the cheapest Tesla ever being available on the old continent. In Norway, Model 3 now starts 377,020 Kroners, which is equal to about $44,375 USD."   https://electrek.co/2019/04/12/tesla-opens-orders-cheaper-model-3-europe-china/   AUTOCAR FIRST DRIVE: REDESIGNED, EURO-SPEC KIA SOUL EV "We recently shared Autocar’s first drive of the all-new Kia Soul EV. However, that drive took place in South Korea. Now, the publication has access to a Euro-spec model and provides initial insight." says InsidEVs.com: "The gas-powered Soul is a popular vehicle in the U.S. due to its low price and considerable versatility. However, Autocar points out that it’s not nearly as sought-after in Europe. Kia is moving to change that by offering a completely redesigned all-electric Soul with a 64-kWh battery pack and plenty of range. In addition, while the new, gas-powered Soul will still be sold in the U.S., European customers will only be able to buy the battery-electric variant. Autocar says that while Kia’s e-Niro may be more practical due to its greater cargo capacity, the Soul has an edge when it comes to its interior, and it’s performance is about equal to that of the Niro EV   TOP GEAR DISSECTS THE PININFARINA BATTISTA, THE 1,874-HP EV "During the Geneva Motor Show last month, we saw the most powerful road car ever to come from Italy. No, it wasn’t a Ferrari or a Lamborghini – actually, it was the first creation from Automobili Pininfarina, which is now an automaker, not just a design studio. Pininfarina says the Battista is the “world’s first pure electric luxury hyper GT” and the car deserves every single word from this colorful description. In a new video, the folks over at Top Gear explain why." reports Motor1: "Probably the most interesting part of the video shines more light on the construction of the Battista, starting with information about the 120-kWh battery, which is, in fact, the same battery package you can find in a Rimac Concept_Two. Reid then talks about the four electric motors that propel that car – and one important thing we learned is that most of the car’s driving modes actually limit the amount of torque you have available in order to make the machine more easily controllable for the driver."   https://www.motor1.com/news/344319/top-gear-dissects-pininfarina-battista/   CAR AND DRIVER SAYS KIA NIRO EV IS A SPECTACULAR ELECTRIC CAR "Kia isn't helping its sales prospects by limiting the Niro EV to only 12 states (California and seven of the other ZEV states—but neither Vermont nor Maine—plus Georgia, Texas, Washington, and Hawaii). Although Niro EVs are already being produced in Kia's Hwaseong, South Korea, plant and are en route to U.S. dealer lots, pricing has yet to be announced. But a safe bet is that they will arrive at the same $37,495 the Kona Electric demands. Plus, Hyundai and Kia have sold so few electrified vehicles that theirs will get the maximum $7500 federal tax credit for years to come—a perk for which Teslas and Chevys no longer qualify."   https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/a26144426/2019-kia-niro-ev-driven/   KIA MIGHT START MAKING ELECTRIC CARS IN EUROPE "Kia is experiencing a success story with its lineup of plug-in hybrids and full electric vehicles. Which has now presented it with a problem of making enough to satisfy demand. That’s why it’s reportedly looking into building its electrified cars in Europe." reports InsideEVs.com: "While the Niro, Optima and Soul hybrids and electrics are currently all made in South Korea for global consumption, Kia may leverage its plant in Slovakia to supply European markets, according to Automotive News Europe. Kia Europe Chief Operating Officer Emilio Herrera told the publication the company would need to sell 32,000 EVs every year from 2021 to comply with the EU’s emissions regulations. Kia is being pressured by the EU to cut its fleet average for C02 emissions to 94 g/km by 2021, something it can only do by selling more plug-ins."   https://insideevs.com/kia-electric-cars-europe-production/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Report On Long Term Battery Degradation, Luxury EVs From Pininfarina And Maybach | 16 April 2018

EV News Daily - Electric Car Podcast

Monday 16th April 2018. The current Model 3 Tracker from Tom Randall and Dean Halford, as updated on 15th April, shows 16,303 cars produced, and a current rate of 2,785 Model 3’s being built per week. BATTERY DEGRADATION Battery degradation is still largely the unknown long term question mark hanging over EV’s. And that’s not because there’s anything wrong with the technology, in general, it’s just the modern era or electric cars are a few years old rather than far longer for ICE cars. In Holland a group of Tesla fans on their forum are gathering data from 350 Teslas and the results have just been updated. The previous results were already very positive but now it seems there is less than 10% degradation after 160,000 miles. Electrek reports: “The data clearly shows that for the first 50,000 miles (100,000 km), most Tesla battery packs will lose about 5% of their capacity, but after the 50,000-mile mark, the capacity levels off and it looks like it could be difficult to make a pack degrade by another 5%. The trend line currently suggests that the average battery pack could cycle through over 300,000 km (186,000) before coming close to 90% capacity” One of the cars reporting into this study has done just over 280,000kms and it has just under 90% battery remaining. Of course we don’t know how many Tesla’s were supercharged every day and which ones were slow charged up to 70% diligently. Although EVs may be relatively new, the 18650 cells which make up the Model S battery packs are quite established now, indeed Tesla only chose that technology when they first started because it was the cost-effective proven choice. The temperature management is surely the key to this, even recently the Nissan LEAF without any thermal management has come under fire with people wanting to rapid charge it multiple times in a row. One commenter summed it up nicely: “By 160,000 miles on various gasoline engine cars I have owned in my life and (not including regular oil/filter changes), I've had to replace: a manifold gasket, timing belt, timing belt tensioner, dropped valve, muffler, and a head gasket. Granted, this wasn't all on the same car. But it is something you will NEVER have to replace on any electric car. To me, 10 percent battery degradation seems acceptable as a trade off.” The next things which spring to mind, how long will a battery actually last? Certainly longer than the other parts on the car I’d hazard to predict. And longer than the car itself probably, depending on where you live. What does this also mean for 2nd life batteries? Well it’s good from the perspective that they will be usable, but bad in that not so many cars will have them to spare.   PININFARINA EV “Plans are in place to launch high-end electric cars under the Pininfarina name” reports MotorAuthority. “The new Automobili Pininfarina was launched on Friday in Rome, where Pininfarina parent company Mahindra was competing in this weekend's Formula E Championship round. The cars will be luxurious, highly advanced and offer extreme performance. The first model arrives this year as the production version of the H2 Speed concept that was shown at the 2016 Geneva auto show. The H2 Speed is a track-only electric supercar that swaps a battery for a hydrogen fuel cell stack, and just 12 will be built. But confirmed Friday, a much more potent model will arrive in 2020 to serve as the flagship of the brand. It will reportedly use technology developed by Rimac as well as Mahindra's Formula E team”. Pininfarina claims that the 2020 hypercar will be capable of 0-62mph in less than two seconds, rivalling the next-generation Tesla Roadster and the Rimac C_Two. 0-186mph is targeted in less than 12 seconds, while a top speed of 249mph has been touted. A production run of around 90 examples is planned for now, with a 311 mile range. TopGear point out “It’ll also come with Level 3+ autonomy, too: not fully autonomous, and the driver will be needed for certain conditions, but a step up from simple lane-keep assist and radar cruise, for example”   MAYBACH EV Mercedes-Maybach revealed a new teaser for what looks like a concept for a new EV. The car is set to debut in just a few weeks at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show. This might be the Maybach SUV we reported on a few weeks back”: say AutoBlog: “It's difficult to make out too many details, but it definitely looks different than the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 that we've seen floating around for the past couple of years. A close-up shot of the steering wheel shows the soft blue glow that Mercedes has put on the EQ-branded concept cars. Other images show clean white leather, rose gold trim and a pair of seats flanking a flower-encrusted panel.”   WHEN YOU REALLY NEED A BIG MAC And finally, even when you’re testing one of the worlds best EV sports cars, you still need a Big Mac or 20 nugs. InsideEVs report a Porsche Mission E was seen at a drive thru McDonald’s. They have translated the video description: “During a night refueling near Stuttgart, we ran into a Porsche Mission E Test Mule. During the difficult testing of hungry – the driver went for Big Mac. Thanks to the front line, he couldn’t get away. Check out the video and photos of the prototype model that is likely to unseat Tesla from the throne.”   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
