Shares in the electric carmaker climbed 12.6% after it struck a deal to sell 100,000 vehicles to the car rental firm Hertz. Previously only Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and Google-owner Alphabet have reached a $1tn valuation. Hertz will pay $4.2bn for 100,000 Model 3s over the next 14 months, which amounts to about a fifth of its fleet. And they reported a surprise first-quarter profit, as stimulus checks and the ongoing Covid vaccine rollout gave consumers more money and greater confidence to head back to the mall and refresh their wardrobesThe first-quarter earnings season is wrapping up with more than 90% of the S&P 500 companies having reported their results. So far, 86% of S&P 500 companies have reported a positive EPS surprise, which would mark the highest percentage of positive earnings surprises since 2008 when FactSet began tracking this metric.Elon Musk gone too far? Tesla (TSLA) dropped more than 2% as famed investor Michael Burry revealed a big short position on the electric carmaker: $534 million. Tesla is down 18% for the year and 36% from the all-time high of $900 on Jan 25.The reason why Michael Burry is short: In the fourth quarter of 2020, Tesla's $270 million in net income was enabled by its sale of $401 million in regulatory credits to other automakers. [CEO Stephan] Winkelmann added that the firm weas working to negate the potential performance disadvantages of PHEV technology. "Batteries also add weight, the alleged enemy of performance," he said. "At Lamborghini, however, we are used to balancing out weight additions. An increase in performance often leads to the addition of weight in the first step. Our cars excel in power-to-weight ratio, so we have a very good starting point for hybridisation." "Lamborghini has announced it is set to fully electrify its range, first with an all-plug-in-hybrid lineup, and then with the planned launch of a fourth model that will be a pure EV." reports Car & Driver: "The Direzione Cor Tauri plan—named after a star in the Taurus constellation—was unveiled by Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann at an event in Italy this morning. The Urus will also gain a plug-in hybrid powertrain, and although we haven’t been given further details we presume it will be a version of the V8 powertrain that Porsche uses in the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid. The companies currently contemplate Salzgitter, Germany for the location.The pilot-line facility, QS-1, will initially be a 1-gigawatt hour (GWh) battery cell commercial production plant for electric vehicle batteries. QuantumScape and Volkswagen intend to expand production capacity by a further 20 GWh at the same location.QS-1 will follow QS-0, QuantumScape’s planned pre-pilot line. In its Q1 Shareholder Letter, QuantumScape highlighted progress on that front as well, securing a facility in San Jose to house the QS-0 line.
