The Gabfest's end is nigh but we've still got a few bits of culture to gab upon. This week, Steve and Dana are joined by longtime Gabfest star pinch hitter Dan Kois. First up for consideration: Pixar's Toy Story 5. In this fifth installment of the computer animation studio's flagship franchise, the threat to the vital bond between toy and child are computers themselves. Will Pixar, of all entities, save us from the threat of screentime? Maybe not. Is it nice to be back with Woody, Buzz, Jesse and the gang of plushies, dolls, and various transitional objects? Maybe so.Next, the panel drops into the indie comedy ecosystem of the streaming service Dropout TV and talks about its chaotic cult hit game show Game Changer, now in its eighth season. Does the goofy hijinks therein offer a framework for the future of TV? They discuss. Finally, supreme, very special friend of the program (SVSFOP) Wesley Morris joins to talk about the New York Times' package on the six sentences that define America and his essay in it about Nina Simone's “Mississippi Goddam.”In our bonus episode, Wesley sticks around to theorize with Steve, Dana, and Julia about the point of even having podcasts about culture.EndorsementsDana: "What Steven Spielberg Taught Me About Fear, Catharsis, and Being Human" by Wesley Morris in The New York Times as well as, maybe for the first time ever for Dana in Gabfest history, a piece of technology: the MacBook Neo.Julia: The ongoing career—after composing the Gabfest theme—of the composer Nicholas Britell including his work for the NBA and particularly the composition "Agape" on the film score of If Beale Street Could Talk. Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes.Everyone's forgotten Peter Parker…or have they? Sony gave us a second full trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day and the interwebs are buzzing about it. We get longer looks at Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner/Hulk and Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle/Punisher in the film, as well as allusions to the big bad of the movie - though Tom Holland recently said on the press tour that the antagonist has not been figured out yet by fans. Films continue to top each other's openings at the box office this year, with Toy Story 5 having the current title of best opening of the year to the tune of $160 million domestically over the Father's Day weekend. This was also the all-time best opening for the 30-year-old franchise. Disclosure Day took second place this weekend, though Toy Story practically beat its global take in the states alone, and Obsession and Backrooms continue their strong streaks coming in at third and fourth respectively.Universal and Blumhouse's Atomic Monster are jumping on the Curry Barker bandwagon having acquired the young director's third film in a reported eight figure deal. While Universal has been backing Barker, both Obsession and his upcoming film Anything But Ghosts are coming from Focus Features. Blumhouse has produced those same films, but this new move puts the horror powerhouse in a stronger position for film development. To tag onto the box office talk and remind you, Obsession was made for $750,000 and has now made more than $300 million worldwide - making it a tantalizing prospect for Blumhouse.Netflix has opted not to proceed with a second season of The Boroughs, a sci-fi TV series executive produced by Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers. The series debuted its first season last month. Universal and Imagine Entertainment are developing a sequel to 2000's How the Grinch Stole Christmas, with Jim Carrey in talks to reprise his role as the classic Dr. Seuss character the Grinch and Ron Howard returning to direct. Manny Jacinto, Emily Mortimer, and Thomasin McKenzie have joined the Season 3 cast of Prime Video's Fallout in recurring roles. In a new interview with Collider, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri revealed that Star Wars creator George Lucas was cast in a small voice part in the upcoming Minions and Monsters because Lucas is a longtime fan of the Despicable Me franchise. Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley is reteaming with Keanu Reeves for a live-action hybrid Lego movie that Cooley will direct and Reeves will star in according to Deadline. Netflix has won the rights to develop Alix E. Harrow's best selling novel The Everlasting and will enter production on a series adaptation immediately according to Variety. The Everlasting is a time loop fantasy novel and was one of the best selling books of last year.Universal Pictures has announced that the next Illumination animated film will be Not Alone, an alien movie starring Timothée Chalamet & Selena Gomez which will release in April of next year. Dylan Clark's reboot of The Blair Witch Project for Lionsgate has landed a release date of September 24, 2027.Legendary has announced that a live action Magic School Bus movie is officially in the works with Elizabeth Banks set to play Ms. Frizzle. Detective Pikachu and Goosebumps director Rob Letterman will helm the feature.

Well, Alex stretched the B2B gimmick pretty thin for this episode - no, Kurt Fuller did not star in an adult film early in his career - but the important thing is we got THE RUNNING MAN in Contrarians Canon. The better version too (not that Edgar Wright's take offered much competition.) So why did Arnie's failed to connect with the world the way his other 1987 movie, Predator, did? We have theories. Time moves more quickly now than it ever has. It was not that long ago that we were talking about a new show executive produced by the Duffer brothers. About a month later, it is one and done. As someone once reminded us, we are just two guys who watch movies. Production budgets and domestic grosses are only a passing interest to us. Still, there are some things that catch our attention. Were we right to say that Michael would get to $1 billion? And what does the future hold for Obsession? There was a major change to our humble little podcast this year. We decided it would be in our best interests to be a little more focused. To that end, we went to just covering one movie each show. Despite this, we still managed to cover twenty-three movies over seventeen episodes. And twenty of them were released in 2026. So, what do we have to talk about? And will we get as worked up as we did last week? The horrors of high school, zombies, musicals, buff nuns, and grindhouse adjacent fun. It may not all have been good, but everything left some sort of impression on us. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. They also address the statement released by the Department of Justice Antitrust Division on the closing of its investigation of the merger of Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Then in the feature segment, Daniel reviews CineEurope 2026 with Lumma's Rolando Rodriguez.

Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes. While it may come as no surprise, the biggest Marvel news this week is still just as exciting as it is obvious with the revelation that Chris Evans will indeed appear in Secret Wars. While not officially confirmed by Marvel, the news broke via a social media post from March 26, that is just now gaining notice, with the actor himself telling Instagram user @comicconmomsi, "I can tell you that...I start work on the next one in a couple of months, I can tell you that," in a video message. That tracks with the projected August production starting date for Secret Wars we've discussed previously. While rumors and speculation are typically not our forte here, the rumor mill surrounding The Batman II cast warrants some attention. In May, we discussed headlines from sources like Variety and The Wrap that seemingly confirmed Sebastian Stan had been cast as Harvey Dent, as he had long been rumored to be, with Scarlett Johansson and Charles Dance announced as Dent's wife and father, respectively. In hindsight, those headlines resulted from Matt Reeve's social media post where he confirmed and welcomed a number of actors as part of the film but did not actually reveal any roles. In the last week, industry insider Jeff Sneider has suggested that his sources claim that Stan will instead play Victor Zsasz and Brian Tyree Henry is set to portray Harvey. Steven Spielberg has returned to the blockbuster arena for the first time in eight years with Disclosure Day, his UFO sci-fi thriller starring Emily Blunt and Josh O'Connor, which opened to approximately $44 million domestically and $93.9 million globally, making it his biggest opening weekend ever for an original film. Meanwhile, Obsession continues its extraordinary run, adding another $19 million in week five for a domestic total of $188.3 million. Spielberg's $115 million production earned strong reviews and a B CinemaScore.Sony has released the trailer for The Social Reckoning, Aaron Sorkin's sequel to The Social Network. Jeremy Strong stars as Mark Zuckerberg alongside Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, and Bill Burr. The film opens October 9.Peter Sarsgaard has joined the Season 3 cast of HBO's The Last of Us in a recurring role. He will play an original character named Amon, one of the leaders of the Seraphites. In an interview with Collider, he said if he makes a standalone Lobo film, it will be rated R, full stop, though he's open to appearing in ensemble DCU projects in the meantime.Peter Serafinowicz has been cast as Peeves the Poltergeist in HBO's Harry Potter series.Anya Taylor-Joy has joined the cast of the upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel The Hunt for Gollum, playing an elf character named Seren.Marvel Comics will publish a one-shot crossover this September titled The Muppets Take the Marvel Universe, celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Muppet Show by teaming Muppets characters with iconic Marvel heroes.Mark Hamill is joining Peacock's Twisted Metal for Season 3 in a recurring role, playing the father of Sweet Tooth.Chris Sanders, co-creator and co-director of the original Lilo & Stitch animated film, will direct Disney's live-action sequel Lilo & Stitch 2. Doctor Who isn't actually canceled, but its Christmas special is, and we break down what the Doctor Who cancellation news really means and which studio should take the franchise next. From there it's a full geek-news roundtable: DC's villain-driven universe, the real question hanging over Supergirl's box office, a new Transformers movie, and why X-Men '97 has everyone naming the childhood cartoons that deserve the same revival treatment. Frank, Thomas, and Phil also get into the UK's plan to ban under-16s from social media, weighing mental health, parenting, and whether kids will just find the next workaround. The episode closes on a love letter to Dungeon Crawler Carl and weekly picks spanning House of the Dragon, Hacks, Spider-Noir, and Masters of the Universe. If you came for the Doctor Who news, stay for the DCU box office debate and the cartoon revival wishlist. Chapters: 00:00 Intro and Question of the Week 05:12 Is Doctor Who Really Canceled? 12:19 Only Murders Heads to Britain 15:26 DC Villains and the Box Office Test 25:03 Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Siege 31:50 The Under-16 Social Media Ban 49:51 X-Men '97 and Cartoon Revivals 1:00:37 Dungeon Crawler Carl and Picks Key Takeaways: The canceled Doctor Who Christmas special is not the end of the show, and we make the case that Prime Video could be the right new home. The bigger DC conversation is about redefining what success looks like, comparing projects to the right peers instead of measuring everything against Avengers money. Transformers Siege on Netflix gets a strong endorsement as the best Transformers property since the original. The under-16 social media debate lands on a hard truth: bans push kids toward less-regulated apps, so the conversation is less about restriction and more about mental health. X-Men '97 reopens the floodgates on cartoon revivals, from Gargoyles and Recess to deep cuts like Gummi Bears and Mummies Alive. Dungeon Crawler Carl is the runaway favorite of the episode, with dream casting and puppetry ideas ahead of the Peacock adaptation. On this week's film show, critic Emma Jones joins Eve Jackson to review the latest cinema releases. They discuss "Backrooms", the record-breaking horror hit from 20-year-old director Kane Parsons, now the youngest filmmaker ever to top the US box office. Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, the film is shaking up Hollywood's ideas about who gets to make movies.
With a reported budget of around $10 million, BACKROOMS has grossed over a quarter of a billion dollars at the global box office. But why? What is it about this little movie that has captured the attention -- and curiosity -- of the average moviegoer? Is it Chiwetel Ejiofor's incredible performance? Is it 20-year-old director Kane Parsons? Is it because of the lore of creepypasta? Let's talk about it...

As the great YouTuber-to-filmmaker war of 2026 draws to a close, we crown a victor in the arena of Obsession vs. Backrooms.
Two scrappy horror films are taking Hollywood by surprise. “Backrooms” and “Obsession” have wildly exceeded expectations at the box office. Both spring from internet culture and have brought an unprecedented numbers of Gen Z-ers into theaters. WSJ's Ben Fritz explains what this new wave means for the movie business.
