Horror films have been a consistent draw for movie theaters, even in a post-pandemic, streaming world. And one of the most well-known production studios in horror is Blumhouse. The production house came on the scene in 2009 with Paranormal Activity, a low-budget found-footage film that became a smash hit spawning a franchise. Blumhouse would repeat this formula with The Purge and Insidious franchise. Now, Blumhouse is known for its more crowd pleasing scary movies like M3GAN and Five Nights at Freddy’s (with the highly anticipated sequel releasing this week), but the studio has also taken risks on up and coming directors like Jordan Peele and Damien Chazelle. So, how does a horror production house continue to survive and turn a profit in today’s film industry? And why does horror seem to be a safe bet for box office returns. Joining us to discuss the current horror movie landscape is Abhijay Prakash, president of Blumhouse. You can read all about Blumhouse’s rise in their new book Horror’s New Wave: 15 Years of Blumhouse.
As we brace for a wintery weekend, Andy Farnsworth and Rachel Wagner, Hosts of the KSL Movie Show, join Greg to showcase what's hot at the theatre right now! They review Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 and tackle the big question: What movie shocked you most with its box office success?

Send us a textWelcome back to DMRThe newest installment in the Predator franchise, Predator: Badlands, breaks new ground by placing a Predator, or Yautja, as its central protagonist. The story follows Dek, a young, outcast Yautja on a quest to prove his worth to his warrior clan by hunting the seemingly unkillable apex predator of the treacherous, alien world of Genna, often called "The Death Planet." His perilous journey leads to an unlikely alliance with an advanced Weyland-Yutani Corporation android named Thia, whose own mission on the hostile planet went sideways. Together, the mismatched pair must navigate the lethal environment, evade Weyland-Yutani forces, and confront a terrifying creature that challenges everything Dek has been taught about the honor of the hunt, making for a thrilling sci-fi survival adventure. The film is directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who also helmed the critically acclaimed Prey. The main cast features Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi as the Predator protagonist, Dek, and Elle Fanning in the dual role of the androids Thia and Tessa. Joe Escalante's weekly spelunk into the business end of showbiz. This Week: the Box Office is dominated by Wicked For Good, which everyone seemingly saw twice. Also, Now You See Me, No We Didn't is #2 (still haven't seen it... not sure we will). The sequel to Sisu came out, and landed at #6. Sam will probably push it up to #4 by himself next week... Larry Ellison is taking CNN at the White House, in the midst of Warner Bros. potential sale to Paramount. Joe talks about what this could mean for David Zazlov's legacy: was he the victim of a changing media landscape, or is he just the guy that killed a bunch of potentially huge projects (Batgirl) because he was afraid of diminishing their value. Time will tell there, for certain... In Celebs Behaving Badly... Rebel Wilson is in potential legal problems, Joe gives his 2 cents on if there's a defamation case there. Former Backstreet Boy Nick Carter's defamation suit gets an update. And Usher planned a restaurant in Atlanta that didn't materialize. Joe discusses his favorite celeb-themed restaurants.
