But then — following snarky comments, bad reviews and widespread mockery by Gen-Z — the film found a larger audience and has now brought in more than $1.6 million dollars. We speak with William Lee Adams, a BBC culture reporter, and Mengchen Zhang from the BBC's Global China Unit. Roxy Striar and Mike Kalinowski are taking over The Kristian Harloff Show today to break down the biggest stories in Marvel, DC, and Hollywood! The main conversation centers on Avengers: Doomsday and whether Marvel Studios' massive December event movie could actually shatter the box office records recently set by Spider-Man: Brand New Day. With Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom, the Avengers assembling alongside characters from the X-Men and Fantastic Four, and anticipation continuing to build, just how big can Avengers: Doomsday get? Roxy and Mike discuss whether Doomsday could become a historic box office event and potentially challenge the biggest movies of all time. Marvel is also preparing audiences for Doomsday in a big way. Disney has revealed a pre-Avengers: Doomsday watchlist, while new information about Marvel Studios' 2028 slate gives us a better idea of where the MCU could be heading after Doomsday and toward Avengers: Secret Wars. We'll combine both stories to discuss Marvel's larger strategy and the future of the MCU. Then it's time for a LANTERNS SPOILER REVIEW! Roxy and Mike dive into HBO and DC Studios' Lanterns, discussing the series with full spoilers, the biggest moments, what worked, what didn't, and what it means for the larger DCU. They also discuss Kyle Chandler revealing that Lanterns nearly went in a very different direction when it came to superhero suits. ⚠️ SPOILER WARNING: The Lanterns discussion will contain spoilers. Finally, the writer of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has spoken out about DC's Supergirl movie following its theatrical run. What happened with the film, and what does its performance mean for the future of James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU? Cyclops Cast, Spider-Man 4 Box Office, and James Gunn Shoots Down Rumors

Multiverse News

Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes.Marvel Studios appears to have found the leader of its new mutant team, as Deadline reported last week that Heartstopper and Warfare star Kit Connor has landed the role of Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops, in the future MCU X-Men film. Sources say Connor went through much the same process as Samara Weaving, who was attached as Emma Frost the week prior, meeting with Schreier and Marvel president Kevin Feige alongside a group of candidates who tested after the July 4th holiday before the studio settled on him. Neither Marvel nor Connor has confirmed the casting, and the film, written by Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear co-creator Joanna Calo, still has no release date. Cyclops has been played on screen before by James Marsden and Tye Sheridan, with Marsden set to reprise the role in December's Avengers: Doomsday. Sony and Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Brand New Day crossed the one-billion-dollar mark overseas in just twelve days of release, making it the second-fastest film ever to reach that number abroad behind Avengers: Endgame. The Destin Daniel Cretton film now stands at $1.67 billion worldwide, split between $654.3 million domestically and $1.013 billion internationally, which makes it the twelfth highest-grossing movie of all time and only the sixteenth ever to clear a billion in foreign markets alone. Universal had a milestone of its own to celebrate, as Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey passed $1.1 billion worldwide to become the highest-grossing film of his career ahead of The Dark Knight Rises, while also becoming the biggest IMAX release ever with $289 million, and it still has China to open on Friday. James Gunn spent part of a Threads session last week putting down one of the most persistent rumors surrounding Matt Reeves' Batman trilogy, telling a fan who asked whether The Batman Part III was being filmed simultaneously with Part II simply, “I can deny.” The theory had gained steam over years of delays, most recently when a redesigned Part II logo appeared to work a Roman numeral III into the artwork, and it offered fans a tidy explanation for why the sequel has taken so long to arrive. In reality, Part II only began principal photography in London in June, and Warner Bros. has already pushed the film from October 2027 to February 18, 2028. Sony and Nintendo's live-action The Legend of Zelda has cast Australian actor Uli Latukefu as Ganondorf under a multi-picture deal, with Severance's Dichen Lachman playing Impa and The Handmaid's Tale's Yvonne Strahovski reported as a queen character. The late Sam Neill also filmed an undisclosed role before his death on July 13, marking one of the final screen performances of his career.Gareth Edwards has exited Universal and Amblin's untitled Jurassic World Rebirth sequel over creative differences, with the studios now searching for a replacement; David Koepp's script is finished and Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey are all still expected back for a 2027 shoot.A24 released the full trailer for Primetime, the Lance Oppenheim drama that Robert Pattinson produces and stars in as To Catch a Predator host Chris Hansen, in theaters September 25.Lionsgate has confirmed that Michael 2 is targeting a production start toward the end of this year or in early 2027, with the sequel to this year's Michael Jackson biopic aiming for a 2028 release.Lionsgate is also developing a new Leprechaun film written by horror veterans Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, reviving a franchise that ran eight movies between 1993 and 2018.Nicholas Hoult has been cast in season 2 of HBO's Harry Potter series as Gilderoy Lockhart, a major character in The Chamber of Secrets that was portrayed by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film adaptation.

Cameron sits down with Jon Reiss and Marjan Safinia to examine the structural challenges facing independent filmmaking—and why many of the assumptions that shaped the last two decades no longer hold.Jon is a filmmaker, author, and media strategist whose book Think Outside the Box Office has become a key resource for independent filmmakers thinking seriously about audience building and distribution. Through his company 8 Above, he creates custom audience-building strategies, theatrical experiences, and digital release campaigns for independent features and documentaries—and actively distributes films himself, most recently bringing The Librarians to over 200 theaters. He has consulted with hundreds of filmmakers and organizations worldwide, helped run the IFP/Gotham Filmmaker Lab for a decade, and founded the 8 Above Distribution Lab to teach filmmakers how to distribute and market their work.Marjan is an Iranian documentary filmmaker whose work—including Seeds and But You Speak Such Good English—has played at over 100 international festivals and been broadcast across North America, Europe, and the Arab world. She is the longest-serving president of the International Documentary Association and the only woman of color to have led the organization since its founding in 1982. A member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Documentary Branch and a Sundance Catalyst Fellow, she is also a board member of Chicken & Egg Pictures and co-hosts The D-Word, a leading online documentary community.Jon is also the co-founder and board president of the Future Film Coalition, formed in 2025 to unite independent film professionals and organizations in building collective power, securing visibility, and shaping public policy that ensures U.S. independent filmmaking continues to flourish. Marjan is an active member of the coalition. In this conversation, Jon and Marjan discuss how financing, distribution, discoverability, and audience behavior have fundamentally shifted—and why the biggest challenge facing independent filmmakers today isn't getting a film made, but building a sustainable path for it to reach an audience. They explore why distribution thinking needs to begin at the development stage, how marketing and audience strategy have become inseparable from production, and why the changing economics of streaming and theatrical exhibition make direct audience relationships more important than ever. Finally, Jon and Marjan discuss the Future Film Coalition's broader advocacy work, including efforts to address media consolidation, strengthen tax credit programs across the country, and make the case to policymakers and regulators that independent film is a significant economic force in communities across the United States. The views and opinions expressed by guests on this podcast are solely their own and do not reflect the views of Wrapbook, its employees, or affiliates.ABOUT WRAPBOOKWrapbook is the AI platform for production finance.Built for today's fast-moving production landscape, Wrapbook brings payroll, spend, and accounting into one AI-powered system—giving production teams the tools they need to do more, faster.Built for features, TV, or commercials—Wrapbook helps the industry's biggest production companies stay compliant, track every dollar in real time, and eliminate the paper-chasing that slows everything down.
