The Maharishi Invincibility Institute, a non-profit and self-development organisation, recently made headlines when Anglo American announced that it would donate its 45 Main Street building in downtown Johannesburg to the institute. The building is estimated to be worth R100 million. The donation will support youth development and Johannesburg's urban renewal efforts. In an interview with Biznews, Dr. Taddy Blecher, CEO of the institute, shared his ambitious plans to turn the CBD into an Education Town. It would be a Herculean task. Derelict buildings vacated by big businesses are scattered throughout the city and have become symbols of Johannesburg's decline—a city that was once the vibrant heart of South Africa's economy. A recent fire in a hijacked building claimed the lives of 70 people. Dr. Blecher said he is not prepared to say it is too hard. He sees Washington's urban renewal, where a successful education institution changed a whole precinct, as an example that he would like to follow. The former actuarial scientist also draws inspiration from the remarkable success stories of his students from underprivileged backgrounds, and he boldly challenged Biznews to return in five years to witness the remarkable progress first-hand.

As humans, we tend to take things for granted. Sure, there are always advances in technology, and life, in general, seems to be getting "easier" — but that's not always the case for everyone. Technology can and should be so much more than that.We must constantly remind ourselves that there is nothing magic about it. We are the ones that imagine, build, and use it every day. Until we approach the entire process from a Universal Design perspective, we will inevitably fail to make it accessible and usable by all. This could result from the need to build products that meet the mass market need to garner the most significant profits possible and meet shareholder expectations. But that is no excuse for the lack of inclusion and disrespect for diversity. This could also result from good intentions that go bad because of unconscious bias that makes us forget that we are not all the same. What we call disabilities are nothing more than shades of colors between a black or white vision that permeates our societies. Those who don't fall into the "segment" defined by the product marketing requirements or by what is described as "normal" will have to find a way to fit the mold or get left behind for that particular advancement instead of enjoying the benefits. It doesn't have to be that way, however. And today's conversation is about this.We can, and must, harness the power of technology to be inclusive as it can, and must, help many peoples' lives. If it is not for an improvement of our universal human condition then, what is it for?We talk about it so people can think about it — and when we think, fantastic things can happen.GuestDoug Blecher, Founder at Autism Personal Coach (@BlecherDoug on Twitter)This Episode's SponsorsBlackCloak: https://itspm.ag/itspbcwebRSA Security: https://itspm.ag/itsprsawebResourcesAutism Stories Podcast: https://anchor.fm/autism-personal-coachInfo Dump Files Podcast: https://anchor.fm/infodumpfilesTo see and hear more Redefining Society content on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-societyTo see and hear more Redefining Technology stories on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-technologyAre you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?https://www.itspmagazine.com/podcast-series-sponsorships

Kate Blecher didn't start out as an energetic healer. In fact, she spent 20 years as a Wall Street analyst. It was a high stress position that required a great deal of flying. Kate was afraid to fly and sought out a hypnotherapist to help her and the therapy removed her fears. She began to study hypnotherapy, at first for a book she was writing, later as a patient needing healing for multiple serious illnesses. Her Journey to Health introduced her to her spirit guides who instructed her in how to heal her body, what to do with her life and how to teach others. Kate talks about these experiences and takes us through an explanation of a body scan and a meditation. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/susan-sherayko/support

For today's episode I chatted with Doug Blecher from Autism Personal Coach and the Autism Stories podcast. We delved into the behind the scenes of how and why Autism Personal Coach was created, and where they are today: with a growing base of coaches that serve adults on the autism spectrum to support them in meeting their personal goals. Doug has worked with individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder for the past 17 years in residential and community settings. He founded Autism Personal Coach seven years ago as a result of seeing the growing need of Autistic adults and teens to access proper supports at home, work, school, and in the community so they can be the best version of their authentic selves. In 2015 Doug was awarded the community innovator award at the Milestones National Autism Conference for the work of Autism Personal Coach and continues to learn from Autistic people every day. This is such an incredible model to support autistic adults and I always enjoy talking with Doug about services and what's working out there. Thanks again, Doug! Episode 401with Joel Blecherhosted by Shireen Hamza and Chris GratienDownload the podcastFeed | iTunes | GooglePlay | SoundCloudSince the early centuries of Islam, Muslims have put tremendous effort into knowing and verifying reports of what the Prophet Mohammad said and did, known as hadith. They have written books collecting hadith, and even longer books explaining what they mean and how they should inform Muslim life. However, these books emerged (and continue to emerge) from a vibrant oral culture of hadith commentary. In this episode, Joel Blecher brings to life many sessions of hadith commentary from three different contexts: classical al-Andalus, Mamluk Egypt and modern India. Blecher tells us of al-Baji, who stirred up controversy in a quiet seaside town of Spain, of ibn Hajar's spontaneous poetic polemics at the Mamluk court, and of how al-Maqsari witnessed the Prophet in attendance in a hadith commentary session in Yemen. Concluding with modern Indian scholars' comments on British colonial officials, Blecher reflects on the way hadith commentary has always been a site of politics as well as piety. « Click for More »
