In Episode Six, Dave Reis speaks with internationally renowned, award-winning jazz musician and centenarian, Terry Gibbs, via Zoom from Australia! Terry Gibbs, was born Julius Gubenkon in 1924. The renowned American jazz vibraphonist and band leader is 101 years old! According to his Wikipedia page, Gibbs has performed or recorded with many of the greatest names in Jazz, including  Tommy Dorsey, Chubby Jackson, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, Alice Coltrane, Louie Bellson, Charlie Shavers, Mel Tormé, and Buddy DeFranco to name just a few. "I am the oldest bebopper alive!” proclaims 93-year-old Terry Gibbs, according to an article in Jazz Times, "This forefather of the jazz vibraphone may well be right; age-wise he beats out his closest competitors, including Roy Haynes (92), Jimmy Heath (91), Lee Konitz (90) and Sheila Jordan (89). Certainly, few musicians of any age can top his ability to whip up a storm of excitement on his instrument." The Artist Index's jazz documentarian and Jazz Podcast Series host, Dave Reis, spent nearly 26 years as a Jazz radio show host, among his many other accomplishments. He was one of the original longtime DJs who worked at the former WUSM, which became radio station WUMD, 89.3 FM, on the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth campus. Dave Reis, AKA David Domingo Reis, began as our guest on In-Focus Podcast 154 and In-Focus Podcast 181. He returns once again as the host of our first-ever ten-part jazz podcast series underwritten by the Fiber Optic Center. There is no better host for this series than Dave Reis, a walking, talking jazz encyclopedia and local legend himself. Dave grew up surrounded by and hanging around with many of the jazz greats he will be presenting his ten-part Jazz Podcast Series underwritten by the Fiber Optic Center. Podcasts are also available on your favorite media app, including Amazon Music / iHeart Radio / Libsyn / Podcast Page / Spotify / WebPlayer, and APPLE PODCASTS   Please consider donating whatever you can to help and assure us in our mission to continue documenting the legacies of South Coast Artists. We continue Glenn Miller month in celebration of what would have been his 120th birthday on March 1. My dad was obviously a big Glenn Miller fan or we wouldn't have been able to do this month-long celebration of his music. He owned 12 33 ⅓ RPM Vinyl records of Glenn Miller performing his music, later conductors of the Miller band, and other band leaders recording Glenn's music. My dad owned even more Miller music on the original 78 RPM Shellac records. Now, if you are a follower of this show, you'll also know my dad was a really big Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass fan. He owned 12 records of the TJB. In this episode we bring them together with the Buddy DeFranco led Glenn Miller band from the 1960s. Sort of an early mashup. So get ready to hear one popular band play music from another popular band in Volume 168: Miller Band Translates TJB. More information about this album, see the Discogs webpage for it. Pianist Count Basie was asked to select a group of his favorite musicians for an impromptu jam session style recording. He selected the players wisely and chose trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, alto saxophone masters, Benny Carter and Willie Smith and tenor giants Stan Getz and Wardell Gray and the herald of the modern clarinet, Buddy DeFranco,. In the rhythm section of course Basie chose guitarist Freddie Green, his right hand man for many years. On bass, the reliable John Simmons and the fiery Buddy Rich on drums. Basie is replaced on the lengthy ballad medley by pianist Arnold Ross and on the final "Blues For The Count" , Basie switches to organ while Ross stays on piano. The format is simple as the set opens on a high level with "Apple Jam". The ballad medley follows with everyone displaying their wares on a group of standard songs. Then the exciting "lady be Good". This standard by the Gershwin Brothers was often used in jam sessions and is one of the high points here. The final "Blues For The Count" is self explanatory. All of this took place in Los Angeles on August 18,1953 under the wise supervision of the great impressario Norman Granz. Sit back and enjoy master musicians in an informal setting playing their best.

“The more we keep discovering, the more it keeps us alive and vibrant.” — Dianne A. Allen You cannot see, taste, or touch music. But you can hear it, and you can most certainly feel it. Music can help relieve the stress, burden and bring you to a more peaceful place. It keeps us alive and vibrant. In this week’s episode, we are joined by Rich Daniels. Part One of ‘Rich Daniels Advice on Precision and Vision’ Music was always a passion for Daniels as he realized at a very young age that it was possible to captivate an audience with a live performance while touching their hearts and minds in an indelible way.  Rich Daniels has been creating and conducting memorable musical concerts and events since 1974 when he began his professional journey as a high school freshman on the great south side of Chicago. He views the opportunity he has been given to have a career in music as a measure of service to others. “When music resonates with our hearts, it can heal and touch us in many ways.” – Dianne A. Allen  Rich is also traveling the country conducting regional orchestras (i.e., Baltimore Symphony, Berkeley Symphony, Richmond Philharmonic, Hartford Philharmonic, Colorado Symphony, Nashville Symphony, etc.) for the estate of Jerry Garcia performing a “Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration” with legendary guitarist/vocalist Warren Haynes. Through the vehicle of The City Lights Orchestra, he has been given a chance to participate in thousands of programs nationwide for associations, corporations and non-profit organizations. Additionally, Rich and his colleagues have had the chance to take the stage and perform in concert with some of the greatest musical artists of the past half-century.  Wherever the need and whatever the medium, Daniels and his musicians have proven they are up to the task of making great music a part of every performance and assignment they have been given. Part Two of ‘Rich Daniels Advice on Precision and Vision’ Artists as diverse as Ray Charles, Mel Torme, Garth Brooks, Rosemary Clooney, Dionne Warwick, Burt Bacharach, Michael Buble, and David Foster have all relied upon the ability of Rich Daniels and his orchestra to collaborate with them to create their special brand of magic in performance.  In recent years Daniels has also been busy in the studio composing and producing recordings for a wide range of projects. As the television and film industry has once again discovered Chicago as a great place to work, Daniels was recently tapped to be the musical supervisor for three different television series and allowed to compose music for the pilot of the Emmy-award winning show “Boss” starring Kelsey Grammer and filmed in Chicago. “Music shouldn't be viewed as something that requires someone to be better than somebody else.” – Rich Daniels Rich and the orchestra were also featured in a concert on PBS this past Fall for the Horatio Alger Society of Distinguished Americans. These TV duties have also included being the on-camera music director for five seasons for the hit show on FOX, EMPIRE starring Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, and Jussie Smollett. Rich has recently music directed for Jussie & Terrence on a PBS concert filmed at the Lyric Opera House in Chicago and most recently with Jussie and Renee Fleming at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. with the National Symphony Orchestra.   Live music is meant to be a joyous experience that should entertain and inspire the listener while taking the audience on an emotional journey that allows them to be empowered by the spirit of this non-tangible entity. About Rich Daniels  Rich is most proud of the various charitable organizations his career has allowed him to serve and promote, especially The Mercy Home for Boys & Girls in Chicago (former board chairman), the DePaul University School of Music (current board chairman) and the Archdiocese Office of Human Dignity & Solidarity (chairman).  Rich was appointed by Illinois Governor Patrick Quinn to the board of the Illinois Arts Council in 2013. He is also the senior board member at the Chicago Federation of Musicians and a delegate to the Chicago Federation of Labor. Rich and his lovely wife Kathy have been married for 32 years and have 4 beautiful children: Rich (30), Mary Kate (29), Emily (26) and Maggie (24). Son Rich was recently married to Maggie Black in July of 2017! Rich Daniels knows that he’s a very lucky guy.  And that through hard work, perseverance and tenacity, together with a strong sense of faith, all things are possible.      JAZZ/POP ADDENDUM During the 1980’s and 1990’s Rich toured extensively with former Tonight Show drummer Ed Shaughnessy. Additionally, Rich also was asked by the estate of Woody Herman to take the band out in 1991 for several tours around the country.  During this same period of time, Rich played for or conducted for Louis Bellson, Ray Charles, Mel Torme, Buddy DeFranco, Phil Wilson and many “pop” personalities including Garth Brooks, Dennis DeYoung, Michael Buble and David Foster.  Rich was also a featured soloist with Laurel Masse’ both in concert and on several of her recordings.  BOARD AFFILIATIONS Former Chairman, Mercy Home for Boys & Girls (current member of the Board of Regents & Board of Directors). Today's show is kind of a nostalgic program for me. The first time I heard a live big band was when the Glenn Miller Orchestra played at a local high school. I was just a high school senior but I was interested in the big bands so I bought a ticket. I don't think I was supposed to be taping the performance but no one said anything so I stood off to the side of the bandstand and took in the sights and sounds. Peanuts Hucko was the director of the band and I marveled at his great playing. Well, a couple of months ago I came across my cassette tape from that night. I digitized it and with the help of my friend here at the station we cleaned it up. So today's show features the Glenn Miller Orchestra down through the years directed by different leaders. There is some great music in this set as well as four numbers from my tape. There are no recordings of Peanuts leading the band so this is kind of a rarity. I hope you enjoy the music. Boniface Ferdinand Leonard "Buddy" DeFranco was the man who brought the clarinet into the Modern jazz era. DeFranco began and can be heard on very early recordings in the mid-forties sounding like a combination of Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw but he soon was absorbing the musical language of Charlie Parker and his disciples and "modernized" his style and became the leading voice of the clarinet in the 40's.50's,60's and beyond. There were a few others who played modern clarinet but none could match Mr. DeFranco. This album isn't called "Mr.Clarinet!" for nothing! It features Buddy DeFranco's working band with Kenny Drew on piano, Milt Hinton on bass and the dynamic Art Blakey on drums. The repertoire is a well chosen mix of standards plus originals by DeFranco and Drew. This is Jazz at it's best!

Legendary pianist Sonny Clark was a known entity on the Jazz scene for about 9 years. His life was snuffed out by drug addiction and he died in January 1963 at age 31. Originally from a small town near Pittsburg, Clark moved to Los Angeles for a few years and began recording in early 1953. In L.A. he joined clarinetist Buddy DeFranco and toured the US and Europe and became better known. Returning to his base in LA, Clark began to get restless and wanted to return to New York where the action was happening. He took a gig with singer Dinah Washington and got back to The Big Apple. He left Dinah and immediately began working with Sonny Rollins and also signed with Blue Note records. Despite his drug problems, Alfred Lion, the head of Blue note, loved Sonny Clark and gave him many opportunities to record as a sideman and leader. The Feature album is one of Sonny's classics in that it has such a stellar cast: John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Donald Byrd on trumpet, Paul Chambers on bass and Arthur Taylor on drums. This recording was done a few weeks after Coltrane's famous "Blue Train" date and three of the participants are here with Clark. Three great standards, arranged by Clark are presented and two distinctive Clark originals. I think you'll agree that "Sonny's Crib" is a classic and typifies the best of New York Jazz from the mid-50's.
