Meet Jenna McDonough, a Meditation and Mindfulness Teacher, Sound Healer, and Reiki Master on a mission to bring tranquility and well-being to all. Her journey into the world of wellness began during her first week of college when she discovered the transformative power of yoga. With a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Florida Atlantic University, focusing on Communications Journalism, Jenna initially pursued her passion for teaching by becoming an Elementary ESE teacher. Although she found fulfillment in this profession, she also recognized the toll it could take on one's well-being. After a few years in the education system, Jenna decided to fuse her love for teaching with her passion for yoga, becoming a yoga instructor and delving into the world of guided meditations. Her dedication extended not only to adults but also to children, sharing the gift of yoga with both. As life unfolded, Jenna transitioned away from teaching to focus on her family. However, she continued to nurture her personal meditation and mindfulness practices, leading her to a profound appreciation for sound and energy healing. Driven by her natural teaching inclination, Jenna committed herself to mastering the realms of meditation, mindfulness, sound, and energy healing. She understood firsthand the importance of these practices in combatting life's stresses. In the wake of the pandemic, Jenna observed the escalating discussions around anxiety and stress, which deeply affected both adults and children. Witnessing this, she felt compelled to contribute to alleviating these states of dysregulation and the physical effects of mental distress. Jenna's passion for teaching others became an undeniable calling. Her ultimate objective? To serve anyone seeking a more peaceful and present life, regardless of their busy schedules, geographical location, or financial constraints. To amplify this mission, Jenna founded Soul Candy Wellbeing, an innovative app offering courses and a monthly subscription-based audio membership, with a focus on trauma sensitivity and education. Jenna's philosophy is rooted in the belief that meditation and mindfulness are not one-size-fits-all practices. She emphasizes the importance of discovering what resonates with each individual and what brings them joy, to create a sustainable and personalized practice that suits their unique needs. Jenna's goal is to empower everyone to live their most peaceful and present life. What we're talking about: 1:33 What is a Bachelor of Arts? Don't confuse “Art” with “Arts”! While the subject Art at school involves things like painting and drawing, a Bachelor of Arts is more about humanities and exploring ideas through a particular perspective. Some people are reluctant to pursue a Bachelor of Arts because they think it won't lead anywhere, however if you look at the majors within the course, there are heaps of things you can study within a Bachelor of Arts that very clearly leads to a particular job or career. 6:42 What if you don't know what you want to do in your career? If you don't know yet what you want to do in your career, that's totally normal and completely fine. I firmly believe that if you're passionate about something and keep learning and networking in that area, opportunities will become available to you. I give a couple of examples of people who studied Arts and didn't know where it was going to take them, including Ash Barty's mindset coach, Ben Crowe. 8:56 A Bachelor of Arts works really well as part of a double degree A fantastic way to explore a greater range of areas, round out your education and have more to talk about in job interviews is to combine Arts with another degree. 10:51 The majors that are offered are important A Bachelor of Arts at 2 different universities can look completely different, so make sure you take a look at what's offered so you can choose the right one for you. I go through some of the majors offered at The University of Melbourne, Monash University, RMIT, Swinburne and Deakin to give you an idea of what your Bachelor of Arts could look like depending on where you choose to study. What we're talking about: 1:37 The difference between a Bachelor of Business and a Bachelor of Commerce While the words Business and Commerce are often used interchangeably, the two courses can be quite distinct. Find out what the focus of each degree usually is to help you decide whether Business or Commerce is right for you. Most importantly, make sure you look at what you can major in for each of the courses you're looking at so that you know whether it has your area of interest. 4:40 What prerequisites do you need for Business or Commerce? In the past, you often needed a Maths subject as a prerequisite for Business and Commerce, but that's no longer always the case, so if you haven't studied Maths in VCE there are definitely options out there for you. It's also worth noting that subjects like Accounting, Economics and Business Management are not prerequisites for these courses, however you may get a subject adjustment if you do well in them which could boost your selection rank. 6:50 What should you look for in a Bachelor of Business or Commerce? You should definitely look for courses that have a placement or internship as part of your course. These types of experiences give you the opportunity to see what it's actually like to work in your chosen area, as well as giving you great networking opportunities, referees for your CV and potentially even a graduate position at the end of your course. 8:23 Other courses to consider Ever wondered why some places offer a Bachelor of Business or Commerce and a Bachelor of Accounting, for example? Find out why you might like to choose the more general Business or Commerce courses, or what circumstances might lead you to choose the more specific degrees. Business and Commerce degrees also complement other areas of study really well, so definitely take a look at the double degrees that are available. If journalism is the lifeblood of our democracy, then why does it feel like its chronically on life support? Nationally, thousands of news outlets have been crushed under the weight of financial distress. The few that survive are driven by profit motives, rather than seeking to educate and inform. Locally, we've witnessed the closures of the Seattle Chinese Post, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, The Seattle Weekly, and the Seattle Globalist. While other outlets have been forced to either go exclusively online or operate with skeleton newsrooms. So, what is to be done to halt the decay of one of society's most essential organs? While many bemoan the decline of journalism, there are also solutions being explored for how to ensure that every community both locally and nationally is afforded journalism that is factual, accurate, and accessible. Join Seattle Times Publisher Frank Blethen, KNKX News Director Florangela Davila, and South Seattle Emerald Executive Director Michael McPhearson as they discuss a pathway to a vibrant local media ecosystem that is a force for the public. The discussion will be moderated by Deloris Irwin of the League of Women Voters. Florangela Davila has been a journalist since 1992. For 14 years she worked at The Seattle Times, covering race and immigration. She also served as managing editor and news host at KCTS 9. The child of immigrants from Colombia and Peru, she was born and raised in Los Angeles and graduated from UC Berkeley and Columbia University. She's earned numerous individual and team journalism honors in print, online and broadcast, most recently three regional Murrow awards for KNKX. Jelani Cobb is the Dean of Journalism at Columbia University. He has been a staff writer at The New Yorker since 2015. He received a Peabody Award for his 2020 PBS Frontline film Whose Vote Counts? and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Commentary in 2018. He has also been a political analyst for MSNBC since 2019. Michael McPhearson is the executive director of the South Seattle Emerald. He is the former executive director of Veterans For Peace. As co-coordinator of the Ferguson/St. Louis Don't Shoot Coalition and leading a delegation to support the people of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, he recognizes the critical role of community media for social change. He has testified before Congress and is currently a board member of the ACLU of Washington. Frank Blethen is the publisher of The Seattle Times and the great-grandson of the 126-year-old company's founder. Delores Irwin is co-chair of the League of Women Voters of Washington committee that produced the 2022 study “The Decline of Local News and Its Impact on Democracy.” She graduated from Cal State University, Fullerton, with a BA in Communications/Journalism, and was a newspaper reporter for several years at Southern California newspapers, including the Orange County Register. She is a former public information officer for a city and also worked for a public hospital and a community college district, all in Southern California. She is the former League president in Kittitas County. Presented by Town Hall Seattle and South Seattle Emerald.

In this episode, I sit down with college admissions coach Kim Duckworth from Bridge Education Center to talk about helping kids expand their options after high school. Many of my listeners are parents and professionals of K-12 kids, and many of them often wonder if they're doing the right things to prepare kids for young adulthood. That's why I thought Kim would be the perfect guest to discuss this topic, because she's helped hundreds of kids successfully get in to their "dream schools". In this interview, Kim and I discuss:✅The importance of having a plan A, plan B, and plan C when thinking about the post-high school years.✅Common options to consider post-graduation (not just college) and how to help your child decide which one is for them.✅The right and wrong way to do a "gap year" if your child is considering it. ✅The ONE habit your child can do to expand their options when it comes to life after high school-especially if they're considering college (spoiler alert: it has to do with vocabulary and books)✅Why the post-high school on-ramp starts in middle school, and what you can do at each age to help children have well-rounded high school experiences. If you have a child who is considering college as a post-high school option, you don't want to miss this interview.Kim Duckworth is the author of “Parents, Are You Ready? Happy Monday Friends!Let's kick off the week with a very inspirational story from a young man that has overcome health difficulties and became a source of hope for his family. Please welcome PREMIERE guest Michael Caprio! A little bit from our guest: My name is Michael Caprio and I'm a 25 year old author living in Northern New Jersey. I earned my BS in Communications/Journalism at Ramapo College of New Jersey. I recently published my memoir, "A Bump in the Road" which details my health battle with a rare genetic condition called Familial Adenomatous Polyposis. In my book I share my personal transformation from before my operations, during recovery, and life after. Along with my own personal journey I detail my families medical history with the illness. Being that it is genetic, it has been running in my family for four generations. I owe it all to the incredible care of my families surgeons throughout the years at Mount Sinai Hospital. I hope my book can shed some light on the coping tools I used to get over my circumstances. My families condition might be rare, but the experiences we went through were not. Life is difficult and everyone faces a few "bumps in the road"--I hope the insights in my book can help others overcome the obstacles placed in their lives. In my book I talk about my support group between me, my aunt, my grandma, and my mom as "The Club" since we all share the same condition. I hope this can be a space for others to feel like they aren't alone as well. Alex is with us today to chat about her journey from enjoying writing at school to pursuing a Bachelor of Communication (Professional Communication). This course starts with a more general approach and allows students to experience different areas, which has led to Alex pivoting and choosing a major that's different to what she initially planned. What we're talking about: Today we talk about accelerating in VCE, using your time efficiently to get your study done, how a Bachelor of Communication degree works and the benefits of doing a course that starts off in a more general way. Accelerating in VCE: Alex did Global Politics Units 1&2 in Year 10 and followed it with Units 3&4 in Year 11. She had a few different options for acceleration to choose from and chose politics because it was the one she was most interested in. We talk about the pros and cons of accelerating and how to decide whether it's a good idea or not for you. Using your time efficiently to get your study done: Alex realised that she needed to spend less time creating beautiful flash cards and getting organised to study, and just work out what needed to be done and do the work. I've helped so many recovering perfectionists with this and completely agree that sometimes you can fool yourself into thinking you're studying when you're actually procrastinating. How a Bachelor of Communication degree works: Alex gives a great insight into how her degree works, including explaining more about the general first year, when you start to specialise, opportunities for travel and how students get a taste of what sort of work they will actually do when they finish their degree. The benefits of doing a course that starts off in a more general way: Even if you know (or think you know!) what you would like to pursue, it can be better to start with a more general degree that allows you to specialise in a particular area after you've had a taste of a few similar options, especially if your experience up until this point is relatively limited. Alex thought she would major in journalism, but after having the chance to experience advertising, public relations and media as well, she discovered that she enjoyed advertising more as it would give her more opportunities to work in a team environment. Links mentioned: My website: https://www.roadmapeducation.com Course that Alex mentions: https://www.rmit.edu.au/study-with-us/levels-of-study/undergraduate-study/bachelor-degrees/bachelor-of-communication-professional-communication-bp222

This show will focus on the short but extraordinary life of Reconstruction era Senator Lawrence Cain of Edgefield, South Carolina. He was considered an honorable and virtuous man and helped shape South Carolina politics between 1865 and 1877 as one of the leaders of the Radical Republican movement. He rose above numerous obstacles to go from slave to state senator. Over 150 years ago he was at the epicenter of social injustice and racism in South Carolina and became a major leader who fought for political and civil rights. The facts of his life had been forgotten like much of African American history during Reconstruction. Now the facts and reality of his life have been rediscovered by Lawrence Cain's great great-grandson in this new book with the help of family, genealogy research, archived papers and genetic DNA results.. Kevin Cherry graduated from James Madison University in Virginia and started on a 30 year career in business development and technical sales including AT&T and 20 years at Microsoft. In 2018, he celebrated 25 years of marriage with his wife, Dianne, and left the corporate world behind. A few years ago he found out about the “family secret” and through research the facts uncovered the truth. Linda Cherry is a Documentary Filmmaker, lecturer, researcher and Ph.D. in the fields of Consciousness and Transformation, Cosmology and Women’s Spirituality. She has Master’s Degree in Religious Studies, a BS in Communications/Journalism and Theatre and is Ordained Interfaith Minister. If you or someone you love has been dealing with migraines or a mental health condition, this Body Buddies podcast episode is for you! Patty Butts, PhD sits down with host, Kristy Jo, to discuss the details of the MTHFR gene mutation, and how nutritional choices can manifest negatively in mental health. “All mental health begins in the gut," she said. "The vagus nerve and the gut are connected.” Patty goes on in the episode to explain how she understands the emotions that can trigger depression: anger, guilt, loss of esteem, love, etc. However, she feels there is more. "Of course there are emotional components, but we are missing the boat by not having a young person who is depressed or acting out not having their blood tested. I wish this could be taught in every health class. Our young people need to know there are physiological reasons they’re depressed. Sometimes it’s genetic, high histamine, or what they’re eating." Additional symptoms people experience should cause us to check for the MTHFR gene mutation. These include: Sleep disturbance Cardiovascular Depression Fatigue Chronic Pain Mental Illness History of Miscarriages Patty Butts is a Licensed Professional Counselor, has a Ph.D. in Holistic Nutrition, an M.Ed. in counseling, a B.S. in Communications & Journalism, and is the author of "Defeating Depression & Beating the Blues," and "Free Yourself From Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia. She went back to school after battling Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia for 5 years and being deathly ill. Only then did she discover she has liver cancer and a fragile immune system. With an alkaline diet where she juiced every day and did microscopy, she was able to recover fully. She discovered she had more parasites in her blood than the doctor had ever seen. Within 4 months she was in remission. Patty is a Grandmother, mother of seven, stepmother to twelve. Clinical and medical hypnotist, NLP, and Certified Emotion Code Practitioner, and Life Coach www.healingyourspirit.com www.chronicfatigueandhealingyourspirit.com, Clinical Hypnotist, Jordan Heights Holistic Mental Health, South Jordan, Utah Certified Elan Light therapist. About MTHFR MTHFR is a genetic defect. It is an enzyme that adds a methyl group to a form of folate. This process is called methylation which is important as it. These enzymes impact gene regulation, hormones, build immune system, produce energy, and protect nerve cells. 40 out of 100 people have this and don’t know it… and now 1 out of every 2 people has some form. You can’t handle folic acid when you have MTHFR, which is in everything. The government mandated folic acid (B9) added to the foods due to birth defects and added to cereals and bread. It’s also in most vitamins so look in the medicine cupboard. Take methylfolate and active Vitamin B12. Candida craves sugar, dairy, and carbohydrates. It’s a yeast in you saying ‘feed me, feed me, feed me.’ IT can cause all kinds of symptoms like fibromyalgia, fatigue, and depression by building up the lactic acid. Taking antibiotics is like having an atomic bomb going off in your stomach. They produce all kinds of candida. They kill off good bacteria and produce growth of bad bacteria. Continuing our series on “Losing the Lamanites,” we interview Sarah Newcomb who descends from the Tsimshian of the NW Coastal Tribes. In this interview we cover: *How Sarah struggled as a youth knowing that she came from the ‘Lamanites,’ who had turned their backs on God. *How she worked her way through college in Rexburg, ID, acquired a degree in Communications/Journalism, and how her new knowledge around sourcing served as an impetus to her questioning her faith. *How her husband ignored the Mormon admonition against interracial marriage, out of love for Sarah. *Her avoidance of dancing (and other native customs), as they were practiced by the ’Lamanites’ in the Book of Mormon. *Her avoidance of the sun, as a way to ensure that her skin would stay as light as possible. *How she used her knowledge of sourcing (seeking original documentation) to discover many of the problems with LDS church history and doctrine, all before discovering the CES Letter. *How Mormon Stories Podcast validated her feelings, and provided strength and a sense of community during her faith transition. *How she now embraces her life in the sun, and is on a journey to connect to the heritage and identity she felt forced to distance herself from while a member of the LDS Church. We thank Sarah for sharing her powerful, beautiful story and know that it will touch lives!
** Full show notes on the episode page for this show here - www.robofthegreen.ie/episodes/ep22-declanfahySo another week, another episode. This one is with Declan Fahy who is a Journalist that has worked for the Irish Times, the Daily Mirror & the Longford Leader. He is now a professor in DCU in Communications & Journalism, and a published Author with the book 'The New Celebrity Scientists: Out of the Lab and Into the Limelight'. He’s also a friend that I grew up with in Longford, which made it all the more enjoyable to record.During the conversation, we talked about Declan being from Longford, but being born in Zambia as his parents were travelling and living there at the time. Declan talks about his love of books and reading from a very early age and this has stayed with him all the way through his life. How this lead him to a Journalism degree in DCU starting in 1995. We discuss Declan’s experience moving from Longford to the big smoke and how this took time to get settled in.Declan talks about his first job in Journalisim at the Longford Leader after a very straightforward interview with Eugene McGee. Declan took a class on the history and philosophy of science in 2nd year and really found a passion for this which set him on the path for specialisation where a lot of things seemed to click. In summer of 3rd year, Declan got a placement with the Irish Times and this was another key stage in his journey. Another great opportunity. Next, Declan did a masters to study how science was communicated. Once this was done, Declan decided to do some work on the front lines and went back to the Irish Times for a period. Another big break came for Declan in the early 2000’s when the foot and mouth disease broke out and Declan was heavily involved in this over a 6/8 week period where many of his articles were front page news.Declan then got to the point where he felt timing was right and moved back to DCU to do his PhD. During this stage, he learned a lot about himself researching and writing. Declan talked about the journey to get to the Final output of the dissertation and a 2 hour exam. Declan then decided to move to Washington to teach Science and health journalism. This was a dream move. We talked about the process for applying and successfully getting the position. There were so many great tips from this conversation. Productivity, getting more done, making time to get things done. Focusing on the top 3 things you’re working on. Hard work, perfection is the enemy of good enough, learning fundamentals, getting into the rhythm of work, writing on work and returning to it a few days later, developing a system and set of rules to write by, moving things along, getting feedback, the process of writing and Declan’s approach. In the last ten minutes, we talk about work life balance, planning and logistics with a young family. Being a flow state, importance of exercise (cycling, Pilates, gym), nutrition, diets, book recommendations (of which there are so many great ones below), decision making, focusing on the important, Stoicism, and we wrap up with Advice on finding out what you like most. Find out what you don’t like early and try different things!Declan can be reached on via the DCU website & via Twitter - @FahydeclanBook references:•The New Celebrity Scientists: Out of the Lab and Into the Limelight.Declan Fahy (2015) The New Celebrity Scientists: Out of the Lab and Into the Limelight.•Tom Wolfe – The new Journalism, The right stuff•Michael Crichton – Jurassic Park, the anadromous strain•Todd Henry – The Accidental creative•Cal Newport – Deep Work•Dave Allen – Getting things done•Neil Steveson – essay on writing and managing time •Tim Caufield – The Cure for Everything •Seneca – Letters from a Stoic
