Crime involving a computer and a network

A fake Wi-Fi network at 35,000 feet turned a Delta flight into a crime scene. Someone on a flight out of Las Vegas set up a fake network to steal passengers' logins, a ransomware gang seized a hospital's Facebook page to post its ransom note, and a White House memo would let private firms hack foreign cybercriminals back for the first time in U.S. history. *Cybercrime is out in the open now, and so is the fight back.* Bryan Hornung, Randy Bryan, and Reginald Andre break down what it means for owners and operators who can't afford to be blindsided. On a Delta flight from Las Vegas to Atlanta, a passenger set up a fake network posing as the plane's Wi-Fi, and the crew pulled the real one offline. It's an "evil twin," a lookalike network that tricks you into connecting so an attacker can steal your logins. A man in Australia did exactly this on real flights and got more than seven years. A nonprofit hospital system, AnMed, got hit with malware and had to close nearly 80 facilities. Then a ransomware crew took over its verified Facebook page and posted the ransom demand in public. When criminals can post from your own account, they steal your megaphone, not just your data. For the first time ever, a White House memo would let vetted private firms strike foreign cybercriminals, with a million-dollar escrow and sign-offs from Justice and Homeland Security. But hacking back on your own is still a federal crime, and the rulebook is two months away. What do you do when you create an AI that can find security vulnerabilities in almost everything? As AI exposes vulnerabilities hidden deep within critical systems, organisations face a new challenge: staying ahead of threats that can now be discovered at machine speed. This week, Technology Now explores the changing cyber security landscape as AI transforms how vulnerabilities are found, fixed, and exploited, forcing organisations to rethink how they manage risk. Jon Green, CTO HPE Networking, joins us to help explain: How AI can be used to pen test new software before releaseHow AI could fundamentally change the way organisations patch and upgrade technology Why critical infrastructure is particularly vulnerable to these types of attacksWhether we could be heading towards a future where software is completely vulnerability free

Online scams have proliferated and are even trickier to detect now… thanks to the use of new AI tools. These scams have become so widespread that this month, San Francisco became the first city in the country to launch a coordinated response to AI-enhanced scams. This action includes multilingual scam alerts, and financial counseling for people who've been defrauded as a result. KALW's NeEddra James reports on AI and while she's seen an acceleration of these scams, she's here to offer some helpful tips for how to protect yourself.

A person on the autism spectrum leaves a file-sharing program running overnight because they want cartoons or anime. By morning, thousands of images have downloaded onto their hard drive, some of them child sexual abuse material they never chose and, in some cases, never even opened. Months later, the FBI is at the door. A judge stares at the download count and asks how anyone could not understand what they were doing. My guest Dr. Mary Riggs Cohen, spends her working life answering that question in courtrooms across the country. She is a clinical psychologist with thirty years specializing in autism spectrum disorders and has conducted forensic evaluations of autistic defendants since 2009. Her new book, co-written with defense attorney Elizabeth Kelley and digital forensics expert Michele Bush, is Cybercrime and the Autism Spectrum: How the Online World Creates Victims and Offenders. I met Dr. Cohen at the International Academy of Law and Mental Health Congress in Montreal, and I asked her on the show the moment her presentation ended, because so much of what she described maps directly onto the recruitment tactics I have studied for five decades. Dr. Cohen's first point cuts against the instinct to sort people into predators and prey. “Most people on the spectrum are both victimized and offenders at some point,” she told me. Cyberbullying, financial scams, and sexual exploitation run in one direction. Chat rooms that ask for “a picture of a child in your family” run in the other, quietly moving an autistic person into possession of CSAM they may never have sought out. Child sexual abuse material (CSAM) is not “child pornography.” It's evidence of child sexual abuse—and it's a crime to create distribute or possess. CSAM includes both real and synthetic content such as images created with artificial intelligence tools. Because many autistic individuals catalog and organize obsessively, agents who search a seized computer often find the material sorted into folders, which reads to an outsider as intent rather than what it frequently is: a hyperfocus trait turned against the person who has it.

This year the FBI issued urgent warnings to parents about 764, a global online community where children are manipulated into acts of violence. With hundreds of investigations under way worldwide, including in Australia, 764 and groups like it are accused of using coercion to turn vulnerable minors into victims and, in some cases, predators. Nour Haydar speaks to investigations reporter Ariel Bogle about the dangers to children these networks pose

Robert Hanssen was a veteran FBI counterintelligence agent who decided to start selling U.S. secrets to the Soviet Union. Hanssen's spying peaked at the height of the Cold War, with his activities responsible for the deaths of at least three spies overseas. They included a Soviet Army general code-named "Top Hat," who was one of America's best intelligence sources and executed in 1986. His story, and others, are told on FOX Nation specials 'Spy Nation: Spies on the Inside' and 'Spy Nation: The Invisible Enemy', that are now available. FOX's Eben Brown speaks with Eric O'Neill, former FBI counterintelligence and counterterrorism agent, and author of 'Gray Day' and 'Spies, Lies and Cybercrime,' who shares his personal stories about Hanssen and what he feels motivated him to turn on his own country.
