In this episode, Jen and Dyana sit down with Greg Mak who is a former United States Navy deep sea diver, and friend of Owen, Jen's husband. Owen makes a special appearance and we get to hear Greg and Owen share about their time in the military together, their deployments, and all about basic training and the missions they've completed in their diving careers. Greg details his experience with ice diving and the ins and outs of the dangers that come along with risky dives. Greg shares all about his post-military adventure of cycling the Pacific Coast Highway with his father, as well as his love for rock climbing, mountaineering, and trying any new sport he can. We're welcoming a veteran of the MMA scene and a proud Hawaiian, Brad Tavares , into our space today. This is a talk where you'll feel the strength of a fighter and the heart of a family man, as Brad gives us unprecedented insight into his life. From the Hawaiian community's migration to Las Vegas, to his personal transformation from a young fighter to a mentor, Brad's journey is a testament to the power of resilience and determination. We'll also be peeling back the layers of martial arts and its influence beyond the ring. Brad shares his experiences of raising two daughters in a world steeped in discipline and self-defense and opens up about his fears as a father. He passionately calls for more attention to martial arts education for the young generation, stating it's not just about fighting, but also about nurturing discipline and self-respect. Where it turns a bit ominous is when Brad brings in the conspiratorial angle to the horrific fires that have been plaguing Hawaii. There are questions to ask - about media coverage, about allocation of government aid, about the bigger picture that seems to be missing from the narrative. And then it turns personal again with Brad's struggles with alcohol, the impact of COVID on his wife's health, and a fascinating discussion on potential matchups, particularly between Conor McGregor and Mike Chandler. This is a journey through a fighter's life, beyond the ring and into the very heart of his existence. Join us in this emotional, enlightening and at times, unnerving journey with Brad Tavares. --------- EPISODE CHAPTERS --------- (0:00:01) - Marcus Deegan Show With Brad Tavares (0:11:53) - Maintaining Mental Health and Strong Mindset (0:15:58) - Teaching Martial Arts to Kids (0:19:02) - Parenthood and Martial Arts (0:23:01) - Hawaii's Disappearance and Conspiracy Theories (0:34:47) - Losing Taste & Deep Sea Diving (0:42:21) - Surfing, Seafood, and Family Conversations (0:49:20) - Discussion on Fighting and Adrenaline (1:01:48) - Discussion on the Marcus Deegan Show

In this episode, we look at decision-making in the world of deep sea diving, a topic that provides us with so many transferable lessons to other domains. It is also a very fun conversation. My guest is Gareth Lock. Gareth is the founder of The Human Diver, an organisation that improves the effectiveness of diving skills through specific human factors training. Gareth has had a long career as a diver, starting out his career in the Royal Air Force where he spent 25 years. Over the years he realised that one thing the military does very well is teamwork – which, of course makes sense because poor decisions, bad behaviour and a lack of situational awareness can cost lives. Gareth found that the world of diving focused heavily on technical expertise – obviously important – but emphasised human behaviours and decision-making less than it should. As a result, he brings these approaches to the diving profession. Gareth has led many complex dives all over the world. He has also taken a huge amount of amazing underwater photos which you can see on his website. This conversation is filled with wonderful insights about decision-making, working in teams, planning, the importance of constructive dissent, psychological safety, a just culture, making change happen, systems thinking and much more. John Ferguson had the idyllic childhood in his small Kansas hometown. That all ended when his mother remarried. John suffered physical and mental torture by the hands of his stepfather for years. He found solace at a local church, attending sessions throughout the week as a place of refuge. John was eventually removed from the home by his father, but the abuse left an indelible mark on him. John joined the marines right after high school graduation. This was followed by service in the army. When John's enlistment was filled, he began a career as a deep sea diver on oil rigs. He spent his time in water so dark and full of sediment, vision was nil. John had a literal rope lifeline. Losing grip of the rope could mean death. He learned to "see" with his hands, manuevering around underwater in the deep recesses. John became skilled with unmanned and manned submersibles. John is a pioneer with drones. He is the owner of Saxon Unmanned. He manufactures drones, specific to the customer's needs. They cost tens of dollars. John uses this technology to fight human trafficking on the southern border. He is willing to risk his life to save another. John is vocal with his beliefs on the evil and corruptness that happen within the American govenment. He is candid about his fears of China, and pulls no punches. Whether you buy everything John says, his story is fascinating. He has been on the verge of death throughout his life several times, but will not quit. John Ferguson loves America. He repeats a phrase said to him in the military,"When things are screwed up, look in the mirror." So, look in the mirror and get involved. You can be a part of the problem or part of the solution. You can donate to John's fight at the border by visiting https://sujtc.com/

If you have ever brushed off meditation as something that's “too hard” or felt like you “can't focus,” this podcast is for you. Diving deep into a meditation practice can be a daunting idea. Just the word “practice” seems to stop me in my tracks, as I believe meditation is not ever something we “should” or “must” do. “Focus” is too strong a word for what we are aiming for. Instead, if we can find a gentle point of attention and discover a comfortable posture or state of mind within ourselves In this episode, we explore three objects of meditation - points where we can gently place our attention and let go. First, the imagination can be a doorway into a clearer state of mind. Breath is a natural rhythm and warm sensation that can anchor us into a deep state of rest. Even the body can be a starting point with all its pains and discomforts. Don't just listen but practice with me in part two. Thanks for listening. It is unimaginable to be in Goa and not spend time at the Goan beaches - snorkelling, deep sea diving or just sitting on a rock, sipping your favourite beer and seeing the sun set. But there is something gravely wrong with Goa's water and its sea life. Sarita Fernandes talks about how emulating the “Bali or Hawaii Model” in Goa's Tourism has deeply impacted its coastline. How does it affect the sea turtles and other aqua life? What can travel companies and tourists do in order to conserve Goa's beaches? What difficulties did she face while undertaking conservation efforts during the pandemic? Tune in to find out.Sarita Fernades is a young activist and a research fellow, who specializes in India's coastal policy. She has worked with Goa's Forest Department as the Founder of Morjim Sea Turtle Trust. She is also the Founder of the Ocean Network. In Part 2 of this interview, Mark discusses his connection with the Vedas and the connection between what physicists describe as the theory of everything and Vedic Science. We talk about how meditation can help us connect with that nourishing part within us that can enable us to achieve more by doing less. Enjoy!
I had the precious opportunity to speak with author Mark N Spencer about his book titled "Ocean of Self" https://oceanofself.com.au/. In the book, Mark draws parallels between his 40-year journey as an ocean diver and as a transcendental meditator. In doing so, he generously shares with his readers his knowledge about String theory, the Vedas, Maharishi Yogi and Manta Rays. We had so much to discuss the interview has a part 2.

This episode takes us to some of the deepest, darkest and most awe-inspiring settings planet Earth has to offer. We’re doing a deep dive into, deep diving, as it happens. Specifically, the perilous quest to discover and map unexplored caves in our oceans’ harshest, most remote corners. Our guide is the intrepid Jill Heinerth, a renowned underwater explorer and cave mapper whose projects span decades, and whose insistence that discovery is the driving force of human advancement is an inspiration to us all. Jill’s taking us back to the earliest days of her profession - that’s all the way back to 350 BCE - when ancient divers employed astonishingly complex tools and techniques to explore the oceans whose surfaces were inscrutable, but whose depths yielded deep sea resources and the intangible rewards of piercing that watery veil, to behold an entirely different world. We’ll also examine how the modern profession of underwater exploration is transforming our understanding of what really lies beneath the water that covers over 70% of Earth’s surface, and how what’s -down there- relates to what’s happening -up here-, past, present, and future. So, strap on those “rebreathers” and join our plunge into the vast, uncharted seas. With Jill leading the way, it’s sure to be an adventure to remember.

The Cephalosquad’s adventures are live-recorded this week from Washington DC as the crew is at Awesome Con (Disclaimer: because it’s a live recording the sound quality is not great). The Cephalosquad don deep sea diving gear to explore and salvage the sunken shipwrecks the “Foaming Wave” and the “Striking Shadow”. However, they find that they are not alone, and are pursued by a horrifying - yet strangely attractive - aquatic monster.
Diane Luby Lane is an award-winning literary activist, educator, actress, poet, author and the founder and executive director of Get Lit–Words Ignite, an LA-based arts education nonprofit that brings classic poetry to the street and street poetry into the classrooms to empower new generations in literature, self-expression and performing arts. By engaging teens in great works of literature, in-school and beyond, teens engage in their own futures and unearth their potential. In 2012 Lane created the now annual Classic Slam, the largest youth classic poetry festival in the nation. Lane’s Lit Kit, a standards based, in-school curriculum, has been adopted by schools throughout the U.S. and internationally. But that’s just part of her story. She is an actress with numerous commercial, TV and film credits and the author of the award-winning Get Lit Rising, published by Simon & Schuster and Words of Women, published by Samuel French. She is also the co-writer and co-producer of DANTE, an original adaptation of Dante’s Inferno, which stars Get Lit Poets. She was the playwright and star of the one-woman show Deep Sea Diving which she toured with Chicano poet and author Jimmy Santiago Baca. Diane is a TedX speaker, a graduate of the Annenberg Foundation’s Alchemy + Leadership Program, a Southern California Leadership Network Fellow and served on L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Poet Laureate Committee and she is a recipient of the Presidential Lifetime Volunteer Service Award. Diane has changed the lives of hundreds of thousand of kids and reached hundreds of millions more through the power of poetry and storytelling. The biggest things that jumped out to me in our conversation were Diane’s total lack of fear of failure, her refusal to be complacent when things have been going well in her life and her willingness to follow her gut and keep trying things that seemed impossible. Progress is not a linear path and success is rarely what it seems. As you’ll hear, sometimes it even involves being a modeling talent scout in a Florida shopping mall. What Diane has done with Get Lit is hugely impressive. But as I learned from her, its success was anything but a foregone conclusion and it has its origins in thousands of hours of hard work and knocking on doors until she overcame the skepticism she encountered and someone gave her a chance to get the program started. Learn more about Diane at www.dianelubylane.com and find her on Instagram and Twitter @dianelubylane. It’s also about protecting the 242 year legacy of the United States Navy. Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! Sommer Floyd returns to the show today to share about her new album Ray of Light. About Sommer Floyd: Emerging recording artist SommerFloyd has unveiled her highly anticipated debut CD, Ray of Light. The new CD, which was produced by Multi-Dove Award winner Steven V. Taylor (Michael W. Smith, Matt Redman, Veggie Tales) and recorded at the legendary Dark Horse Recording Studio in Franklin, Tennessee, released to retail Friday, November 11, 2016, through SommerFloyd Music. A joyful amalgamation of sparkling Pop/Rock, New Country and Contemporary Worship, Floyd's inaugural release has drawn comparisons to artists like Kari Jobe, Mia Fieldes, Laura Story and The Band Perry's Kimberly Perry. Fan favorites include the celebratory "Children of God," the fun and encouraging Pop-Country anthem, "Drop and Run," and the gently meandering confessional ballad, "I Need You." Floyd allows her natural effervescence to shine through on the exuberant "Ray of Light," a song she says was inspired by a lazy summer afternoon spent in the company of her young daughter, Heidi. "We were sitting outside looking up at the sun," she recalls. "I realized, that's how we are supposed to be as believers. We were meant to shine as a ray of light, to illuminate the dark places." Floyd's love of the great outdoors served as inspiration for a number of other songs on the project, including the upbeat anthem, "Let It Rain," the gently rocking, "Lighthouse," and the slow-burning "Live Like Jesus." She unveils her vulnerable heart in the lovely, yet achingly poignant, "Stronger," a song she wrote for a friend battling leukemia. "I had just gotten off the phone with her husband," she muses. "She had gone to the emergency room, thinking it was just allergies. I cried out to God, wondering why bad things happen to good people. I still don't have the answers to that question, but I know that the love of God is sufficient for all our needs. And when life gets harder, God makes us stronger. He has destined us to overcome, even when it doesn't look like it from the world's perspective." Her peace-evoking Contemporary Worship hymn, "How You Love Me," could easily become a staple in church services across the country with its lovely chorus: "You are worthy, worthy/ I fall down at Your feet crying holy, holy/ Your love is all I need and Your beauty takes my breath away from me." Speaking of hymns that are church staples, Floyd delivers her own unique take on the beloved classic, "Great Is Thy Faithfulness," which is the only song on the project that she didn't write. "The words to this hymn are so powerful that I wanted to include it on the album," she explains. If you look up "All American Girl" in the dictionary, chances are the definition will be accompanied by a picture of Sommer Floyd. Born and raised in the Texas Hill Country, Floyd was an honor roll student, gifted athlete, beauty queen, and genuinely nice person. Voted "Class Favorite" and "Most Talented" by her high school classmates, Floyd was the quintessential cheerleader, earning four individual high school All American designations and three All Star Team National Championships. Attending college on a cheerleading scholarship, Floyd was designated a college All American as a freshman, an almost unheard of accomplishment. She ran on the varsity track team, played tennis, showed livestock, participated in rodeos and earned her Deep Sea Diving certification. And she sings. And writes songs. While Sommer certainly has all the credentials for The All American Girl, she is also 100 percent human. She is the first to admit she has made her share of mistakes. Those poor choices produced a deep level of brokenness, which compelled Sommer to dig deep into God's faithfulness, and reconnect with the God of her youth. The more connected the young woman became with God, the more songs began to flow from her pen. "Putting my brokenness on paper helped to get me through the hard times," Sommer says, "and the lyrics started to turn into worship." Her experience of brokenness and restoration resonated strongly throughout her community, opening doors for her to share her music and lead worship at churches and charity events throughout the Texas Hill Country, where she lives with her daughter, Heidi. Sommer's fetching vocals, ear-pleasing melodies and spiritually mature lyrics caught the ear of her producer, Steven V. Taylor, and she soon found herself in Franklin, Tennessee with some of Nashville's finest musicians, recording her debut CD at the legendary Dark Horse Studios. Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! In this episode, I speak with Sommer Floyd about her new album Ray of Light. Attending college on a cheerleading scholarship, Sommer was designated a college All American as a freshman, an almost unheard of accomplishment. She ran on the varsity track team, played tennis, showed livestock, participated in rodeos, earned her Deep Sea Diving certification... Oh, and she sings. While Sommer certainly has all the credentials for The Girl Next Door, she is also 100 percent human. And she is the first to admit, in addition to all the accolades, she has made her share of mistakes. "As a teenage girl I disappointed myself with some of the choices I made," she confesses. One of those choices resulted in an unhealthy relationship, and the out-of-wedlock conception of her daughter, Heidi. Broken-hearted, at the lowest point of her life, Sommer returned home to her loving, supportive family where she dug deep into God's faithfulness. As she reconnected with the God of her youth, songs began to pour forth. "Putting my brokenness on paper helped to get me through the hard times," Sommer says, "and the lyrics started to turn into worship."
