About Me (from Elizabeth) My name is Elizabeth, and my journey started with me asking God what He wanted out of my life instead of me asking for doors to be opened. He clearly said “I want you to have children who you teach to know and love me but they will not ask come through you.” Then He sent me to China! I adopted this beautiful 11 month old baby who Chinese name was Ya Wei which is pronounced the same as Gods Yahweh. Every step of the journey was God! Three months home, we got an unexpected diagnosis of athetoid cerebral palsy. I grieved, cried, but also put on my big girl pants and tried to do the only thing I knew…to tackle it! I researched, embraced the world of therapies, and learned to be a servant! Every season was hard and sweet all at the same time. Then came a season of zero sleep! This was the hardest season. I just cried out to God. I felt the covenant between us and just cried out for help because I couldn't function at all. We as a family were falling apart. Well he sent two people asking why she didn't have a neurologist. At this point, I was questioning the journey! I knew God is good but this journey was not always feeling good. After the hard seasons, I have been praying about finding the joy in this journey in this season. God has pointed out so many joyful moments. It has taught me God truly cares about of it and to asks him for help! There's a bit of a parental feel about this week's podcast. Two mums from Nottingham were categorised in a hospital computer system as having learning disabilities and, they say, received poor treatment as a result. Claire Whyte and Elizabeth Jones are autistic but their local NHS trust only has the ability to (inappropriately) categorise them as having a learning disability, because there is no neurodivergent box to tick on the system. They say they were spoken to in simplified language and had decisions about their care made without consulting them. As a result, they felt patronised and left out of their own maternity care. Presenter Emma Tracey speaks to them and we get a response from the NHS and the company, System C, who make the app. Emma also speaks to Jessica Slice, author of newly published and ironically titled book Unfit Parent: A Disabled Mother Challenges an Inaccessible World. In it she maintains that disabled people are unusually placed to have the skills to be parents. She says her life as someone with POTS and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, has made her more resilient, patient, tolerant of pain, and thinks disabled people shouldn't be written off as mums and dads ... and a whole lot more. There's a special birthday happening this weekend in the Coromandel township of Thames. The Thames Music Group's Grand Piano is turning 40. Elizabeth Jones is one of the founding members of the group.
In June 1991, The New York Times published a piece titled “Scientists Study Ancient DNA for Glimpses of Past Worlds.” Published a year after Michael Crichton's 1990 novel Jurassic Park, on which the 1993 blockbuster would be based, the article opens “Will it one day become possible to breed a living dinosaur from genes preserved in fossils?” More than 30 years on, we obviously have not bred a living dinosaur, nor come even close. But the early 1990's kicked off the first age of ancient DNA with massive optimism, stimulated by the spread of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology, which allowed the amplification of minute amounts of genetic material. I remember this particular article because an extract was passed around my 8th-grade science class. Today I talk to Dr. Elizabeth Jones, author of Ancient DNA: The Making of a Celebrity Science, about the excitement in paleogenetics in the 1990s, its subsequent retrenchment as a field, and the prompt renaissance in the late 2000's under the leadership of Svante Pääbo and Eske Willerslev. Jones first articulates her idea of what “celebrity science” is. Rather than science being driven by an individual, like Albert Einstein or James Watson, she argues that fields of science itself can become a celebrity due to strong public interest. This was clearly true in the 1990's, with the frequent popular press stories about dinosaur DNA and the tie-in to Jurassic Park, and in the late 2000's and down to the present, culminating in Pääbo being awarded a Nobel Prize. In her book, Jones views celebrity science as a wholly positive development, allowing for a full exploration of the possibilities of a field, and putting the spotlight on possible problems so that science's self-correction mechanisms can kick-in. This was certainly true with the first “hype cycle” of ancient DNA, when it turned out that many of the specific results were actually the result of modern contamination. Jones outlines how in fact it was Pääbo and his collaborators who were the skeptics demanding stricter methods and frameworks before publication. Ancient DNA then recounts how a second hype cycle was triggered by genomic sequencing's integration into paleogenetics, opening up an avenue to obtain the whole genomes of Neanderthals and other species. Jones' Ph.D. work, which led to Ancient DNA, was just concluded in 2015. But she recalls the mad last-second scramble to update the manuscript at the last second because of this last half a decade's flood of results. They consider the field's future possibilities, and finally the prospects for genuine retrieval of biological material from actual dinosaurs, the original ambition in the 1990's
This week marks the 30th anniversary of the release of Jurassic Park, a movie that both plays with history and made history. Like Jaws and Star Wars before it, Jurassic Park changed what we thought was possible in movie theaters while commenting on our fascination with the pre-human past. I asked Dr. Elizabeth Jones, author of Ancient DNA: The Making of a Celebrity Science (on sale from Amazon right now) to come on the show to talk about how Jurassic Park changed the science of paleontology and just why that velociraptor scene in the kitchen is so damn good.About our guest:Dr. Elizabeth Jones holds a PhD in Science & Technology Studies from University College London, a MA in History & Philosophy of Science from Florida State University, and a BA in History & Philosophy from North Carolina State University. Currently, she works at the North Carolina Museum and Natural Sciences and North Carolina State University as the Coordinator for Cretaceous Creatures, a public science project that engages 8th grade science teachers and students across the state in making their own microfossil discoveries.Show notes:https://www.newsweek.com/new-dinosaur-utah-moros-intrepidus-tyrannosaurus-rex-1338776https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/back-brontosaurus-dinosaur-just-might-deserve-its-own-genus-species-science-180954892/www.cretaceouscreatures.orghttps://colossal.com/george-church-the-future-without-limit/

Outro: Latebloomer. The Text: This week's text is Control, spanning from pages 149 - 154. Synopsis: Wu, Hammond and Arnold begin to feel some anxieties of the consultants actually recommending that the park be closed for safety reasons, and become leery of Malcolm and Gennaro in particular – while our consultants tour through the sauropod paddock, enjoying the view of Triceratops, Apatosaurus and Hadrosaurs. Muldoon, on the other hand, has anxieties of the consultants' actual safety, and preps his Jeep with a rocket launcher just in case – which isn't much of a vouch of confidence for the park's safety is it? At the same time, a large storm coming in jeopardizes the safety of the big supply ship, the Anne B, and since Hammond spared the expense of installing a storm barrier at the docks, this ship must depart early. Oh, and unbelievably, contrary to everything they've been told so far on this tour, Tim spots a rogue velociraptor running amongst the hadrosaurs, and it's so unbelievable everyone scrambles to find an explanation. Discussions surround: Movie adatpations, Control is a Hoax, and the Island Layout. Corrections: Side effects: May cause you to hear sudden exclamatory warnings while you're trying to drive around unrelated to what's going on around you. Find it on iTunes, on Spotify (click here!) or on Podbean (click here). Thank you! Searching for Ancient DNA: The Use and Abuse of Celebrity Elizabeth Jones, PhD, Project Coordinator at NC Museum of Natural Sciences, and Postdoctoral Researcher in Biological Sciences at NC State Website | Twitter @DrDinoDNA Ancient DNA research has a short but sensational history, especially as the birth of the field coincided with the Jurassic Park craze. Find out how celebrity helped shape the science for better or for worse. Abstract Ancient DNA research—the recovery of genetic material from long-dead organisms—is a discipline that developed from science fiction into a reality between the 1980s and today. Drawing on scientific, historical, and archival material, as well as original interviews with more than fifty researchers worldwide, Elizabeth Jones explores the field's formation and explains its relationship with the media by examining its close connection to de-extinction, the science and technology of resurrecting extinct species. In this talk, Jones reveals how the search for DNA from fossils flourished under the influence of intense press and public interest, particularly as this new line of research coincided with the book and movie Jurassic Park. She then takes on this reality, diving deeper into the nuance of celebrity to show how media interest simultaneously empowered and undermined the field, and how scientists responded to it both positively and negatively. By investigating the use and (perceived) abuse of celebrity, we arrive at an appreciation for the intricate interplay between science and media, and how the two influence one another. Jones received her BA in History and Philosophy from NCSU, MA in History and Philosophy of Science from Florida State University, and PhD in Science and Technology Studies from University College London. Her research is interdisciplinary, focusing on the historical, philosophical, and sociological aspects of the scientific process to better understand how science happens and how it impacts society. Throughout her career, she has had first-hand experience working with paleontologists and geneticists in both the field and the lab across the US, UK, and Europe. Recently I interviewed the shining star Elizabeth Jones from Sweet Paradise Baking Company in Nicholasville, KY. Two years ago, Elizabeth launched her biz and hasn’t looked back! What fascinated me most about this interview was Elizabeth’s poise, sincerity, humility, work ethic, family and parenting values and her attitudes of productivity and gratitude. She comes from a long line of entrepreneurs in her family, a tag line she considers to be a huge generational blessing. You need to know that her cookies are baked fresh the day she delivers and she uses only the finest ingredients. Her cookies are deliciously huge! Trust me! I’ve tasted Sweet Paradise Baking Company cookies and they are undeniably worth their weight in gold! This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay! 1. No clues need, we have Real Good Ketchup and some Cool Cold Brew The school holidays are in full swing; parents of the world – we salute you (not least because the roads are quieter and it's quicker to get home). Those of us without offspring will stand there with empathetic nods towards parents who try desperately to fill the six-week period with activities that entertain and control. For your hard work, we have another fantastic podcast for you. There's no tantrums or paddies from Sue or Ollie this week – that'll be because we have food and drink in the studio (nope, not raisin packets or rusk biscuits). Now, this is actually a handy bit of knowledge for parents; did you know that (according to this article) a serving of Heinz Tomato Ketchup contains as much sugar as a standard chocolate chip cookie? Scary thoughts, especially during BBQ season when little hands creep towards the big red bottle. However, it's time to rejoice, this year's FoodTalk Awards helped us to unearth the solution. Easily deserving of their gold award, Elizabeth Jones introduced us to Real Good Ketchup. It contains 78% less salt and no sugar at all. The most impressive thing though? It tastes exactly like the real deal. Superb stuff. Another thing that comes with having kids is the tiredness. They wake up early and demand to be fed and watered, they don't even lay-in at the weekend – it sounds exhausting. The tiredness issue is exasperated by this heatwave – it's not so nice to drink hot coffee when it's what feels like 300 degrees outside. Yet again though, we've discovered a fix. We're putting out fires all over the place! This time it's the handy-work of Joe Devereux-Kelly that needs to be admired. He has created the lovely Cool Cold Brew – the clue's in the name; it's perfectly chilled and perfect for the summer. Make sure you learn all about the cold brewing techniques that have created the tasty range of cold coffees.

The activist in Elizabeth Jones peaked it's head out in 8th grade when she presented a research paper on animal testing to her fellow classmates. It wasn't until years later, after becoming vegan and being put on the spot about her activism efforts, did Liz allow her inner activist to come through. Today, she's a Marine Biologist by day and passionate, bad ass animal protector by night/weekend and everything in between. A quick visit to her Instagram page will reveal her passion and efforts to educate and bring awareness to not only animal welfare, but also the environment, health and human rights. We've admired Liz for quite some time and was eager to sit down and learn her story. It takes incredible strength to stick to your convictions despite constant harassment and ridicule. Yet, Liz understands her mission is greater than herself and continues each day to fight for the voiceless and marginalized.
