Let's go to the 99th Floor ... of an apartment block in London, to view the world as The Rolling Stones did in 1965's "Get Off Of My Cloud." The song is the follow-up to "Satisfaction" and the boys were under pressure to keep makin' hits when they just wanted to relax. As a result, it's snotty, and Mick Jagger rises (!) to the occasion to create some early punk poetry. The song crossed the pond in 66 and got the detergent treatment from Dino, Desi, and Billy - it's cleaner, but remember to take the bubblegum out of your pockets before you do the wash! Some reprobates named Winky & The Ramses drag the song into their garage and make the song American(boo!) -- they draw out the similarity to "Hang on Sloopy" and add solos. Copious energy. Next up are some English cats in Spain called The Tomcats, who slow the song down, siesta-style. Finally, The Flying Pickets performed an acapella rendition of the tune and it's a hoot! Get on Cloud 9!

What's up, dudes? Remember Band Aid and its mega-hit “Do They Know It's Christmas?” It spun off countless relief efforts, including Carol Aid 1985. Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas introduced me to this concert, and he's here to talk about its MTV and Music Box broadcast!Carol Aid was a famine relief concert held at the club Heaven in London. MTV and Music Box aired a cut down version, leaving out several acts. In fact, the likes of Magnum, Captain Sensible, and Miquel Brown (to name a few) were cut for time. It's quite unbelievable.Cliff Richard kicked off the broadcast version with “Another Christmas Day,” while John Parr sang “Once in Royal David's City.” Meanwhile, the Fixx pressed for donations and sang “Peace On Earth,” a hidden track from their following album. Subsequently, the event ended with the entire roster singing “Do They Know It's Christmas?” rather heartily.Chris De Burgh? Check. Anita Harris? She was there. Toto Coelo and the Flying Pickets? Got them too, though we have no idea what they sang. So grab your oversized checks, put on your red beret, and jam out to “Carols from Heaven” and Carol Aid 1985!Sounds of ChristmasFB: @SOCMusicTwitter: @SOCMusicIG: @socmusicGive us a buzz! Soldater!

The latest episode of the podcast which asks; does playing Legend by Bob Marley constitute a hate crime? Finally, Chart Music gets off its fat arse, gets on its bike and starts looking for a job, and it's a particularly fraught one: rummaging through an episode from the arse-end of the Yellow Hurll era in an attempt to find anything nourishing and skill. It's the other side of Easter '84, and your panel are a) not bothering to revise for CSEs which are useless in Thatcher's Britain, b) failing to understand the Greek alphabet and wondering why anyone in Coventry would need to learn it, and c) playing gigs in a Barry shopping centre and trying to make acoustic guitars sound like the Jesus and Mary Chain. The good news is that Top Of The Pops is still a beacon of Pop Nowness. The bad news: over a year ahead of schedule, the Dinosaurs of Pop have come lumbering back and Simon Bates – frighteningly – doesn't look out of place in the studio for the first time ever. This, Pop-Crazed Youngsters, is your Dad's Top Of The Pops – a half-hour Radio 2 of the soul. Musicwise, oh dear; there's only one teenager on stage in the entire episode. Morrissey shows how right-on and inclusive he is by letting Sandie Shaw borrow his band for a while. A cursed Mayan mask with the mouth of Phil Collins soundtracks some horrific morning dog-breathed snogging. Belle and the Devotions prepare to be booed at in Luxembourg. Island Records de-Rastacise Bob Marley by 110% and recreate the opening credits of Pigeon Street. Duran Duran make their long-awaited return to the UK and demonstrate that reports of their demise are premature. Willie Nelson and Julio Iglesias practically come on to each other. Our Bands are represented by Echo and the Bunnymen. The Flying Pickets have one last warm against the brazier of the charts before the Massive Clay Head pulls us into its orbit. Neil Kulkarni and Simon Price join Al Needham for a long, hard stare at 1984, whirling off into such tangents as having Xmas ruined by Ed Sheeran, the majesty of studded gauntlets, recreating images of Bob Marley with football mascots, getting punched in the stomach by Eurovision winners, Effing and Jeffing in an Osmonds' house, now not to commence that vital gig in a Chilean prison, petals in beer at Cardiff Uni, and the proud parents of Alien Sex Fiend. GO FOR IT, Pop-Crazed Youngsters – and enjoy all that lovely swearing… Video Playlist | Subscribe | Facebook | Twitter | The Chart Music Wiki | PatreonSubscribe to Our Neil's Substack See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Neil Kulkarni, Simon Price and Al Needham bring this episode of Top Of The Pops to a close by blanching at the sight of Julio Iglesias practically caressing Willie Nelson's beer gut, scratch their heads at Echo and the Bunnymen channelling the spirit of Spinal Tap, witnessing the Flying Pickets performing in front of a massive Guess Who board, and attempting to get a handle on Lionel Richie and his massive clay head…Video Playlist | Subscribe | Facebook | Twitter | The Chart Music Wiki | Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Its Christmas Time, there's no need to be afraid, or maybe there is as Brews in the Binyard returns for a Xmas Special. Sadly there is just me and Alex as the third 6 from the unholy trinity Sean Clark couldn't make the recording. Its a typical end of year episode with a review of 2021 and a look forward to 2022, as usual there are 14 swear words in the episode so please don't play aloud near children or nervous goldfish. Which is better, Worcestershire Sauce or Henderson Relish, Yazoo or The Flying Pickets and what we are having for Xmas Dinner. Stories of tape measure duels and Big Games abound in a lengthy 2 hrs and 40 minutes. Also included are some more of Yarkshire Gamers Rules for Life. Many of my previous guests have been kind enough to record special Xmas messages throughout. Its been a brilliant 2021 and I want to thank all my guests and especially you, the listeners. You have made this Podcast worthwhile with your support, likes, comments and follows, thank you one and all. We will be back with new episodes in 2022, have a great Xmas and a Happy New Year. The music was hot off the back of 1983, Paul Young, Culture Club, Thompson Twins and Howard Jones were at the peak of their careers. Flying Pickets and Slade were battling out the number one spot with Paul Young and Culture Club. The albums saw big albums from Billy Joel, Paul McCartney and the very first Now That’s What I Call Music. All the Top 20 hits, a few from the bottom half and all the cheese eighties had to offer. Enjoy!
In the UK, the No. 1 song the week of Christmas is a big deal. The media breathlessly covers the contest, and there are even wagers placed on what song will reach the top of the charts as pop stars and record labels jockey for position. While there are patterns to the kinds of songs that tend to do well in this perennial sweepstakes, often the winner is a fluke: Everything from Queen to the Flying Pickets to Bob the Builder has taken the crown. It was even parodied in the smash British Christmas comedy film Love, Actually—and one year in the late aughts, the British public rebelled en masse against a music-TV impresario, making a statement with the unlikeliest Christmas topper ever. But in an age when songs sell less than they stream, and hits tend to snowball, will the sun set on the fluky British Christmas No. 1 empire? I've been wanting to interview a bunch of school students for a while, so this was a real treat for me.Our work experience team answered Anncy's question about science and humanities working together and asked their own, here:Should we send people to Mars? If so, which 4 people and what 1 technology would you send? If we decide not to go, what should we do with those people instead?Really special thanks to the Work experience students: Ella, Boris, Lily, Nick, Nelson and Jesse. Thanks so much to everyone who has subscribed and listen to our STEMpunk episodes. "Let's make this baby fly!" Said the uncool and un-Welsh Welsh rock 'n' roller Billy, who refrains (perhaps disappointingly) from drop-kicking the Chimeron child over the Shangri-La camp's Olympic size swimming pool. Yes, it's time to take a look at the distinctly odd Delta and the Bannermen, a tale of a baffling bee-keeper, unnecessary Americans, a shot-down stand-up and life-size plastic soldiers with lockjaw. When will Ray realise that she's barking up the wrong tree? When will Billy realise he's sniffing around the wrong species? Will the Bannermen have a whip round to get Gavrok a barbecue? And can the Flying Pickets achieve further chart success now their leader has been reduced to smoking footwear? Don't expect to find the answers here as Jim and Martin struggle to decide whether to mark the story hi-de-high or hi-de-low.

In episode 3, I'm joined by Simon Pegg (not that one) to talk about Jaws 3 (aka Jaws 3-D). There is a winning idea for a spin-off, an exploration of the morality of the captivity of rare animals and we look at misogyny in the 1980s US water park industry. Amazingly there was no swearing in this episode. Anything for a "clean" rating on iTunes. To end the show, we have the UK number one from the date this film was released, the Flying Pickets with a cover of Yazoo's Only You. Apologies for the poor sound quality - it was early days and a few IT issues got in the way. Please get in touch on Facebook or Twitter at @BetamaxPod.

This is a very obscure vocal group from many years ago. When I was dating my wife, we would study to this music for hours on end. The calm music reminds me of very happy times.
Obrigado e continuem sempre a ouvir as Noites Longas do FM Estéreo.
