Government IT contractor Carahsoft had its Reston, Va., headquarters searched by the FBI Tuesday morning, three sources familiar with the matter told FedScoop. In response to an inquiry about the raid, the FBI confirmed via email that it had “conducted court-authorized law enforcement activity” but declined to comment further. Meanwhile, the Department of Veterans Affairs is once again facing criticism from its inspector general related to its modernized electronic health record program in a pair of new reports published this week. According to one of those, the VA has neglected to put in place the proper controls for its Oracle Cerner electronic health record system to adequately prevent and respond to major incidents. In Episode 111, Quinn & Brian discuss the past, present, and future of government IT infrastructure. ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED??? Our guest is Aneesh Chopra, the first Chief Technology Officer of the United States. Twelve years after serving under President Obama, he’s the co-founder of CareJourney, whose mission is to empower individuals and organizations they trust with open, clinically-relevant analytics and insights in the pursuit of the optimal healthcare journey. Sounds nice! Technology moves fast. Just look at Dogecoin! Government IT… not so much. So how the hell do we take the rapid innovations of Silicon Valley (fine, Miami) and apply it to our nimble little bureaucracy? It takes a little MacGyvering -- and a lot of talking. Aneesh’s goal is to be a translator between the public sector and the private sector, from health care to voting to SolarWinds. And just in time: modernizing the technical infrastructure of our government actually has bipartisan support — just look how the White House embraced Twitter! (sob sob sob) Aneesh has the ideas, tools, and plans to enhance communication, maximize our technological capabilities, and get hacked just a little less by Russia. Just a little. How the Beatles are influencing Smart Building Controls and the Smart Buildings Controls Renaissance Across the Universe with Ken and Eric. I saw a wonderful movie last night called Across the Universe. It is a revolutionary rock musical that re-imagines America in the turbulent late-1960s and features 34 compositions originally written by members of the Beatles. It reminded me of the EASY IO Global Conference in Manchester England, and the trip Ken and I took to Liverpool. As you can see in this video, Ken and I explore the places were the Beatles grew up and got started. We reflect on how Smart Building Controls are in a phase very much like music was in England in the early sixties right before the Beatles and others broke the rules and changed music forever. Software presents a paradox, its ease of use allows for complexity and adaptability, yet these features often make software impossible: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/how-can-software-be-so-hardHow can it be possible for teenagers to write smartphone apps that make them multi-millionaires when many commercial and Government IT projects fail, despite employing the skills and resources of international IT companies? What is software and how is it developed? How confident do we need to be that it is sufficiently correct, reliable, usable, safe or secure? What evidence would we need? The main reasons why software projects overrun, get cancelled, or deliver inadequate software will be explored, using examples of project failures and the litigations that often result. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/how-can-software-be-so-hardGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597.
