The rampant rise of greenwashing threatens to undermine genuine sustainability efforts and mislead consumers, with over 900 businesses in Europe being accused of the practice in 2024. Greenwashing can come in many different forms, and the tactics used aren't always easy to spot. In this episode, Mel dives into the 7 shades of greenwashing and explains the common greenwashing tactics you should be on the lookout for. You'll learn · What is Greencrowding? · What is Greenlighting? · What is Greenshifting? · What is Greenlabelling? · What is Greenrinsing? · What is Greenhushing? · What is Greenmasking? Resources · Carbonology · 7 Shades of Greenwashing Guide In this episode, we talk about: [02:05] Episode Summary – In the 2nd part of this 3-part series on greenwashing, we dive into the various methods and tactics used by businesses to avoid their sustainability obligations. [03:05] What is greencrowding?: This tactic relies on safety in numbers and occurs when different groups (like governments, organisations and companies) join forces to create the impression of making significant environmental changes. For example, 8 of the world's biggest 20 plastic polluters including companies such as Royal Dutch Shell, Coca-Cola, and BP are part of the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, however the group moves at the speed of the slowest member and sets low environmental targets to stall action as it is often costly and involves a lot of the companies resources and time [03:55] What is greenlighting? – This is when companies spotlight a particularly ‘green' product or operation which helps to draw attention away from tis otherwise environmentally damaging activities. Commonly seen in the car industry, recent BMW campaigning highlights the company's electric vehicles, despite being heavily invested in combustion engine vehicles therefore not addressing their major source of emissions. Another example is Exxonmobil, who heavily advertised its “advanced biofuels” made from algae, however didn't mention the fact that the biofuels made up a miniscule part of production. Since coming under scrutiny Exxonmobil have rescinded this project altogether and haven't looked to practical alternatives. [05:15] What is greenshifting? - This is where the blame gets shifted onto consumers. BP's “Know your carbon footprint” campaign is a key example, it invited customers to share pledges for reducing their individual emissions yet BP's core business continue to partake and scheme hugely polluting oil and gas projects. Another example include H&M who urged consumers to recycle their old clothes yet, the company continues to be a prime culprit in fast-fashion and have a significant part to plat in over-consumerism leading to environmental degradation. [06:10] The growing need for comprehensive carbon reporting – This occurs when companies use words like ‘eco', ‘sustainable' or related wording or symbols conveying green messaging with no evidence to support it. Kohl's and Walmart were sued for labelling toxic rayon textiles as eco-friendly bamboo. Another more recent example is McDonald's Paper Straws where In 2019 a paper straws to introduced to replace plastic ones, claiming it was an eco-friendly move. However, it was later revealed that these paper straws were not recyclable, leading to criticism that the company was misleading consumers about the environmental benefits. [07:15] What is greenrinsing? - This is where companies change their sustainability commitments or targets before actually achieving them. Repeatedly, Coca-cola has missed and moved its recycling targets. Between 2020 – 2022, the company dropped its targets for using recycled packaging from 50% by 2030 to 25% proving these targets were not sufficiently made. BP and ExxonMobil are two more examples of being criticized for frequently updating their climate targets without substantial progress. Various ambitious goals were announced over the years, but critics argue that these targets are often revised or postponed making it hard to assess real achievements and also trust between consumers, investors and legal frameworks are lost. So the takeaway here is, make sure you're targets are realistic! [08:45] What is greenhushing? – This occurs when companies deliberately underreport or hide green credentials to evade scrutiny, which is a rising practice found in larger firms who struggle to successfully hit their targets/ aims. Commonly found with firms that make distant net zero targets but do not report on progress. It allows them to hide the fact that they are not taking meaningful steps. Companies often avoid reporting positive environmental measures they may be taking to prevent greenwashing accusations which can be argued as counter-productive in the efforts to help drive systemic and industrial change in the most polluting industries. H&M and ExxonMobil are key examples of greenhushing and no-longer actively promote their sustainability practices as they have faced criticism over false / limited actions in the past. This one is rather damaging, especially to those who are taking meaningful sustainable action, but may not be keeping up with their targets. This is why it's so crucial to make those targets obtainable. If this practice continues, then there is less pressure overall for businesses to do their part for sustainability. It's important to celebrate the victories, no matter how small, as it all adds up to the bigger picture. [10:55] What is greenmasking? - Greenmasking (a term coined by Carbonology®) is used to describe the practice where organisations self-certify their environmental impact without independent verification. This means they claim their green credentials are accurate while avoiding transparency about their methodology and data. Essentially, they are "marking their own homework," which can lead to misleading claims about their sustainability efforts. Some companies offer ISO 14064 consulting and verification services that may not always adhere to the rigorous standards required for genuine verification. This can result in poor practices and undermine the credibility of the certification. For example, some consulting firms might offer ISO 14064 verification as part of their services but fail to conduct thorough and independent audits. Instead, they may ‘verify' the data is correct in-house. This can lead to situations where companies are able to self-label their environmental impact as compliant with ISO 14064 without truly meeting the standard's requirements. This results in a vast amount of unreliable and untrustworthy data that is purportedly verified. Furthermore, with some consultancy companies asserting that offering both consultancy and verification within the same firm is a viable option, it paves the way for poor reporting standards to be accepted, only worsening the problem in the long run. Greenmasking can have significant implications for stakeholders, including investors, customers, and regulators, who rely on accurate and transparent environmental reporting. To combat greenmasking, it is crucial for organisations to seek independent and accredited verification of their GHG emissions ensuring that their sustainability claims are credible and based upon the rigorous standards stated in ISO14064-3. This is a special message from Dallas Chief Eddie Garcia as he is retiring, after 33 years, from the law enforcement profession. It is a sad time for the Dallas Police Department as we are losing a true innovator and a “Cop's Cop” natural leader from the Department. Eddie Garcia started his law enforcement career, age 21, at the San Jose Police Department and he rose to become Chief of that Department in 2016. He served in Narcotics, SWAT, the Homicide Unit and then began to climb into leadership, setting the path to Dallas Texas. The City of Dallas was reeling from skyrocketing crime, low Department morale and on the heels of covid and the defund the police movement and there was an opening for the Chief of Police position. The Department was in need of a strong leader, the community demanded a transparent Chief, and the City prayed for a figure that could turn around a much needed police department. In February of 2021 Chief Eddie Garcia took over as the Department's 30th Police Chief and the first Latino Chief in its 140 year history and quickly went to work building his command staff, connecting with the community and building trust in the Department. Eddie was and always will be an old street cop masquerading as a four star chief and the City of Dallas if lucky to have had a glimpse of true leadership that we hope that other future Chiefs will take note. Chief Garcia will leave the Dallas Police Department on November 1st to start a new journey in the State's Capital as the Assistant City Manager of Public Safety. We will miss you Boss and we love you. Garcia's administrations accomplishments: Four straight years of violent crime reduction. Greenlighting the implementation of the Wellness Unit. Better relationships with community and city leaders. Alcohol Leave Policy that has assisted 14 officers to date. Authorizing the usage of blocker trucks to protect officers. Improved recruiting from outside the State. Creation of lateral transfer policy.
Episode 203: How many words does a message need to be for it to be useful? Would you believe under 35 words, or under 160 characters? Here are some examples: Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg address: “We cannot dedicate. We cannot consecrate we cannot hallow this ground. The world will little note nor long. Remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.” Suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst declared, “We are here not because we are law-breakers; we are here in our efforts to become law-makers.” Henry David Thoreau, in his book Walden, on experiencing Nature should be accessible to all, regardless of social or economic status. “The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man's abode”. JFK “the goal, before this decade is out, [is] of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth.” Pierre Trudeau: proposed in 1967 that Canada should decriminalize homosexuality. He said “The view we take is, there's no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation.” Hilary Clinton 2008 when she lost out to Barack Obama for the nomination to run for president said "we weren't able to shatter that highest, hardest glass ceiling this time," but added proudly, "it's got about 18 million cracks in it," a tally of her primary votes. Having heard those, you'll agree that this is doable. Someone who believes a concise strategy is what it takes to lead people What's more, she believes we must show them this learned skill so they can craft their strategies and develop into leaders themselves. Auckland councillors have given mayor Wayne Brown's Long Term Plan the green light. It includes a $50 per week cap for public transport fares and creating an Auckland Future Fund with the Council's remaining airport shares. Brown says there was a lot of discussion on the airport shares. "The public we consulted were all very keen to put the airport shares into a growth fund. But some of my councillors were just kind of emotionally attached to them." The plan will go to the full governing body in June to be rubber-stamped. It's Tuesday, April 11th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Calgary police arrest pastor 3rd time for protesting drag queens for kids Fox News.com carried a 3 minute and 11 second video of a Christian pastor in Calgary, Alberta arrested by police. The pastor was speaking against the public flaunting of transvestism in the presence of children, now commonly known as “drag queen story time.” The Calgary police registered their support of drag queen story time in the arrest, and charged Pastor Derek Reimer of Mission 7 Ministries with what they called a “hate crime.” The pastor spent Easter weekend behind bars, reports RebelNews. Canadian Christians objected to the outrageous arrest while it was taking place. Listen. FEMALE: “This is injustice. You guys don't have children? We're trying to protect our children's innocence. You know that, right? Do you guys not have children?” MALE #1: “No, they're just following orders. Just following orders.” MALE #2: “Shame on you!” (crosstalk) FEMALE: “Then step out of the orders you're given. Have conviction in your heart.” MALE #2: “You guys are acting like Nazis, Gestapo. Shame on you! Why aren't you protecting our children from pedophiles?” MALE #3: “The Nazis in Germany in World War Two.” MALE #2:”Why aren't you guys trying to arrest rapists and gangsters and drug dealers and pedophiles?” MALE #3: “This is ridiculous. This is Nazi Germany all over again.” MALE #2: “Come on. Wake up. Stand for freedom. We the people.” MALE #1: “No. Look at them. S.S. Gestapo.” In lieu of the protests against the transvestite shows in libraries across Alberta, the Calgary City Council issued what they called “the Safe and Inclusive Access Bylaw.” The measure disallowed any protests within 100 meters of a recreation facility or library entrance. Also, the pastor has been instructed by the courts not to communicate with any “self-identified LGBTQ people.” Keep in mind Proverbs 29:27 today. “An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous, And one whose way is upright is an abomination to the wicked.” Louisville, Kentucky mass killing Another mass killing occurred in a Louisville, Kentucky bank yesterday resulting in five fatalities, reports ABC News. That's the fifth worst killing this year so far in the United States. Defined as violent attacks involving more than one victim, Wikipedia lists 27 mass shootings in the last two weeks, and 134 since the beginning of the year. The Wikipedia list includes associated news footnotes. Violent crime is actually down in America Yet, the big picture on violent crime in the US is still not as bad as it was in the early 1990s. The Council on Criminal Justice released a study earlier this year indicating that the number of homicides dropped in 2022, in all about 4% lower than it was in 2021. The study noted that there were “242 fewer murders in the 27 cities that publicly report monthly homicide data. The national homicide rate remained 34% higher than in 2019, the year before the pandemic began, and about half the historical nationwide peaks in 1980 and 1991.” Also, the number of gun assaults dropped by 7% in 2022. Chinese war games with Taiwan China's People's Liberation Army spent the weekend conducting war games around Taiwan. The drill included 91 aircraft and 12 military ships, reports TaiwanNews.com. Greece considers greenlighting homosexual faux marriage The Associated Press reports that the upcoming election in Greece will hinge on the question of homosexual faux-marriage. Alexis Tsipras, who heads the main left-wing opposition party, has announced that if elected, he will “legalize same sex marriage with full parental rights.” This would make Greece the first country identified by the Eastern Orthodox Christian faith to oppose God's law in this form. 30 countries approve homosexual faux marriage today Pew Research has listed 30 countries that have gone the distance by approving homosexual faux marriage. This includes most apostate Protestant countries as well as Western Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Taiwan, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Ecuador, and parts of Mexico. The Scriptures are clear on matters like homosexuality and abortion. Leviticus 18:21-22 says, “You shall not let any of your descendants pass through the fire to Molech, nor shall you profane the name of your God: I am the Lord. You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination.” Idaho bans abortion trafficking of minors Idaho Republican Governor Brad Little signed a bill which bans abortion trafficking of minors in the state, reports LifeNews.com. Adults assisting an underage girl with getting an abortion, without parental consent, face two to five years in prison. Bob Jones University president and chairman resign South Carolina's FITS new source reports a dust-up in the leadership of Bob Jones University resulting in the resignation of the college's president Steve Pettit, and the Chairman of the Board, John Lewis. The news report indicates that the controversy surrounds “troubling financial numbers” and a “Title IX inquiry or investigation.” Steve Pettit had served as president of the conservative Christian university for nine years. Gen X parents spending retirement on adult children A Bankrate survey has found that about half of Gen X parents are compromising their retirement funds to support their adult children. Only 38% of Baby Boomer parents have done the same. In total, 68% of parents have made a financial sacrifice to help their adult kids. America did not celebrate Easter Monday And finally, Eastern Monday was a holiday for almost every Western nation, except the United States. Most of Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and about half of Africa took the day off in commemoration of Christ's resurrection. But not the United States. There's no turning back now. Speaker Nancy Pelosi instructed her House colleagues to draft articles of impeachment. What will those articles look like? Will obstruction of justice related to the Mueller investigation play a role? Plus, Pelosi has a heated exchange with a reporter about whether or not she hates President Trump. CNN political director David Chalian previews the consequential days ahead with CNN senior political reporter Nia-Malika Henderson and CNN legal analyst Michael Zeldin.

Little does this CBS Executive know that the pitch he is about to hear will change everything. Ghen Maynard hears lots of pitches for shows but this one is different. It isn’t a scripted drama or comedy series or traditional game show. There is nothing quite like it on TV and it doesn’t fit into any existing genre — but he knows one thing, he loves it. It’s an idea that would turn into a reality series set on an island and ultimately transform the primetime landscape on broadcast television and usher in a new generation of unscripted programming that would catapult his career. Ghen Maynard is the Senior Executive Vice President of Alternative Programming for CBS Television Studios. He’s the maverick who has helped develop some of reality television’s biggest hits. Early in his career, Ghen championed and brought to life the first competition reality show for Network Television… a mega-hit called Survivor. Ghen also developed and oversaw the multiple Emmy Award-winning The Amazing Race, the U.S. version of Big Brother, America’s Next Top Model as well as Kid Nation, Power of 10, and Million Dollar Password. As a drama development executive, he helped develop CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Judging Amy and The District. The list of successful shows goes on. There’s no doubt Maynard has a keen eye for what viewers like — Survivor, The Amazing Race, Big Brother and Top Model are among the longest-running reality TV franchises in the world. I caught up with Ghen just after the premiere of an unusual reboot version of the iconic 90’s teen series Beverly Hills 90210 called BH90210, which he developed and sold to FOX, and Kids Say the Darndest Things starring Tiffany Haddish, which he sold to ABC -- Once again proving that this Executive, who likes to think big, has the Midas Touch.
