If you ever downloaded online videos since the year 2000, this man is who you should thank! This week I'm speaking with technologist and philosopher Jordan Hall (formerly Jordan Greenhall). Jordan was a founder of numerous early-internet companies including video codec company DivX. However, I got to know him through his contributions to a community known as “Game B”, which seeks to understand how human civilization can transform itself into a more sustainable, anti-rivalrous, win-win dynamic. Today's conversation is a philosophical and technical dive into the anthropological drivers of competition, complexity, centra and decentralization, and the role of AI in shaping a more Game B future. JORDAN'S BIOGRAPHY: Jordan is now in his seventeenth year of building disruptive technology companies. First as an early employee crafting strategy and product for MP3.com, then at InterVU (acquired by Akamai) and then finally in 2000 launching and leading the online digital video revolution as founder and CEO of DivX. After somewhat successfully navigating two financial crises and an IPO (and going down in flames at Stage6), he left the helm at DivX to return his attention to the big picture. He tried his hand at capitalism – combining Angel investment at the sharp edge of the Schumpeter wave — with participation in a number of think tanks and institutes; most notably, the Aspen Institute and the Santa Fe Institute where he served on the Board of Trustees for five sweet years. This exposure led him to the conclusion that humanity is in the midst of a world historical transition which will likely kill all of us (see Mad Max) but just might end in a truly amazing future (see Star Trek). Getting there is going to require many things of us – most notably a significant upgrade of our individual and collective capacity for thought and action. "The long-awaited emergence of 'Teal' as a shape of consciousness, set of life conditions, and accompanying techno-economic structure is upon us, and will increasingly emerge with the rise of The Transformation Age. The Integral Philosophy movement inhabits just one small niche of this broader phenomena that inside Integral Life we simply call 'Emergent Teal'. Populated by a diverse set of people and organizations, starting this year Integral Life has begun opening its platform to a broader set of voices, hosts and activities—look out for many exciting announcements coming your way soon—and also begun to engage with some of these talented people, like the one here, an “open class” format which arose from an interaction among Perspectiva's Jonathan Rowson, The PopUp School's Bonnitta Roy, GameB's Jordan Greenhall and myself on Twitter. I was excited to join this conversation because our host, the brilliant Bonnitta Roy, intentionally focused on the personal and concrete among the three guests—all of us fathers—on what it means to be a father, raise children, and take on the responsibility of intergenerational transmission in this time between eras, and whether it holds lessons for being a leader today." —Robb Smith

I invited some of my closest friends, Dasha Maximov and Mads Friis, to join the show today. Dasha, Mads, and I play a game of drawing the question out of the hat amidst a fun conversation around biohacking, being happy, inner work, routines, and much more.Who is Dasha Maximov? Dasha Maximov, former-management consultant turned health explorer, found that the available information for addressing her chronic pain and depression from multiple concussions was limited and frustrating. Specialists across the globe offered reductionist approaches and outdated recommendations. Her last brain injury was, ironically, when she was doing her masters in neuroscience. Knowing about the brain and feeling the frustration of shrugged shoulders, led her on a path of health exploration to take control of her health and educate herself on alternative ways to heal her brain. In 2019, after healing many of her immediate, chronic pains via natural hacks, Dasha turned to bring this information to others by organizing The Health Optimisation Summit, Europe’s largest alternative, and preventative health conference. Quickly she saw that a gap existed in the health world surrounding women-specific health topics. To solve this, she created WhealthCo, an online global community focused on evidence-based science for women. The online forum bridges together doctors, researchers, healers, and ‘laywomen’ to focus specifically on knowledge sharing about women’s health issues. Each week the forum has guest doctors and researchers provide answers to members’ questions. Dasha believes that health is best achieved when a person is informed about their options and that this is possible only through connecting together and learning from each other. A problem is solved much quicker when there are diverse perspectives looking at it from multiple angles.Who is Mads Friis? Mads Friis is the host of the Growth Island podcast which is focused on how to live a happy, healthy, and meaningful life. He is also a partner in the Venture/Startup studio/factory KRING where they utilize the knowledge from the podcast to build startups focused on health/biohacking. He has a background in Business and Psychology from Harvard and Copenhagen Business School. The world seems just a bit crazier every single day right now. Luckily on this week’s show we have the guiding light of a brilliant thinker I’ve admired for years, Jordan Hall (formerly Jordan Greenhall). I first discovered Jordan after reading his Situational Assessment in 2017 and his essay On Sovereignty which was pivotal in my the maturation of my worldview. On the show we begin with my own challenge in transcending myopic preoccupation with personal growth for its own sake and how trying to live an epic story can interfere with our personal sovereignty. The interview is then interrupted and we are able to explore regaining our sovereignty in real time. We talk about epistemological humility as a way of navigating sense-making amidst strange phenomena like QAnan. We touch on Jordan’s ideas of the Blue Church and the Red Religion. Finally we look at the upcoming US election and how we might marshal and deploy our resources in an increasingly mad world. Jordan has been involved in many esteemed organizations including Harvard Law School, the Aspen Institute, and the Santa Fe Institute where he served on the Board of Trustees for five years. He co-founded DivX, Game B, and Neurohacker Collective with Daniel Schmachtenberger. I would highly recommend his essays on medium and his public talks. This is a heady conversation and so to better locate you my dear listeners, I begin by reading a section of his essay on Sovereignty that impacted me so much. Andreas Breitfeld discusses perpetual jetlag, life without hormones, and recovery from the road. As the Head of KTC Lab, Andreas created an incredible EMF-blocking travel pant to benefit road warriors worldwide.Who is Andreas Breitfeld? No question, traveling is fun and what better way to broaden your horizons than by traveling the world? If you want to get to know other people, cultures and other markets, you have to leave your home behind from time to time. When Andreas started his own business about 15 years ago with a PR and marketing agency, it was clear to me from the very beginning how important it was to be as close as possible to everything that was happening in my industry around the globe. The concept worked and with the success of the agency, Andreas' travel volume increased as well. In some years, Andreas visited the USA, Canada, China and South Korea more often than France or Italy in his entire life. At some point, Andreas realized that adapting to new time zones was harder and harder. He had massive problems recovering at all. Increasing sleep problems, food intolerances, heavy metal poisoning, leaky gut, too much cortisol at first, then probably no cortisol at all at some point - his lifestyle took its toll. Andreas' travel problems peaked parallel to the introduction of the Skynet, i.e. the wireless networks in the airplane. Andreas sat one day in Thailand at the beach and had to admit to himself that, despite the success, he was physically and increasingly mentally completely down. Andreas began to do research and was amazed at much of the knowledge he gained. And he realized that he needed help. Luckily Andreas found understanding, the right support and the way (back) to biohacking. This already fascinated him as the first fitness editor of Shape magazine. As in the past, it fascinates Andreas not only to understand things theoretically, but also to try them out in practice. Thanks to a happy combination of perseverance and willingness to take risks, Andreas managed to get back to his starting point within nine months. As Head of the Lab at KTC LAB, Andreas sees it as his task to collect and pass on knowledge, experiences, and tips on the subject of "safer and better travel". In addition, Andreas is pleased that through and together with KTC Unlimited he have the opportunity to develop textile solutions for a wide variety of biohacks. KTC Lab is currently working on the completion of a collection that will not only enable frequent flyers to shield their bodies from additional stressors such as EMFs. KTC Lab is also exploring strategies to accelerate regeneration and provide all the tools to meet the challenges of an active, global lifestyle.Highlights[3:18] Being perpetually jet lagged[8:05] Skynet[13:26] Life with 0 cortisol[15:01] The effects of constant jet lag[20:25] Finding biohacking and recouperation[29:45] EMF and Airplanes[34:31] Calcium channels[41:14] Creating EMF blocking pants[49:30] Testing the effectiveness of the pants ResourcesKTC LabHealth Optimisation Summit TicketsDr. Joseph MercolaSmartSky Networks5G: Great risk for EU, U.S. and International Health! This is an audio version of Jordan Greenhall: Reality Check which was published on the Rebel Wisdom YouTube site on April 21st 2019. In his viral hit after the Trump election 'Deep Code: Situational Assessment 2017', Jordan Greenhall sketched out a framework for understanding the nature of the deep shifts taking place below the surface of culture. In it, he framed the growing conflict as something closer to revolutionary war than politics as usual, with four distinct fronts. Now, over two years after that celebrated analysis, how are those predictions holding up, and what is the state of play? Original 2017 posting here: https://medium.com/deep-code/situatio... Today on the show I'm speaking with Bonnitta Roy about her presentation 'Six Ways to Go Meta'. We cover such topics as what it mean to ‘go meta’, why the anthropocene is driving humans to discover new ways of ‘going meta’, how deconstructing our experience through meditation creates a clean palette to experiment with new ways of going meta, how previous guests like Adam Robbert, Jordan Greenhall, Nora Bateson, and Rob Burbea fit into Bonnitta’s meta-meta-model, and why it’s vital that we create new educational forms that help create and discover new human minds. In this episode we discuss further on one of our favorite topics - how to gain more sovereignty in modern world, as well as how it relates to the notion of personal identity. We use Jordan Greenhall's framework to describe sovereignty as developing and practicing three basic capacities: perception, sense making and agency. We discuss these capacities in the context of dominant framework of secular thought in the Western world, the crisis of meaning, entrepreneurship, identity politics etc. The ideas and inspiration for our discussions come from weekly group calls that are part of the course in personal evolution that we are currently facilitating. Dr. David Heitmann joins the podcast to discuss the elements of injury, injury rehabilitation, programming for the long-term, and stoic philosophy. “I just said, "screw it!" I changed my mindset. I said I'm in control of my own destiny. And I started focusing on my health instead of the business. It changed my whole world around.” Dr. David Heitmann Who is Dr. David Heitmann The path to high performance doesn't come without bumps in the roads. Dr. Heitmann had 14 broken bones and torn ligaments, his foot chopped up in a lawnmower, nerve traction injuries, debilitating sciatic pain, and even a period in his life which could be described as an "overstressed dark time." Dr. Dave experienced severe depression, brain fog, fatigue, digestive issues, joint pain, swelling, stress fractures, and even had 3 teeth crack in half which had to be removed. All of these amazing experiences have taught him about the journey of health. Dr. David Heitmann's obsession with health and performance started out of a love for football in 4th grade. Dr. Dave was a 5 sport athlete growing up and played competitive football and rugby until he was 27. College allowed him to geek out on with a double major in biochemistry and molecular biology. As if that was not enough, he also did research in biomechanics and energetics. From there, Dr. Dave went to get his Doctor of Chiropractic along with a Masters in Sports Science and Rehabilitation completing 600 hours of training around Clinical Exercise Physiologist and Certified Strength and Conditioning. In his 10 years of owning a sports medicine clinic, he's treated 4700 patients. Dr. Dave was the medical director of 12 sports teams and provided athletic training services for most of them. The phrase 'Intellectual Dark Web' was first coined by mathematician Eric Weinstein in early 2018, it quickly spread. Was this just a chance remark, or was there a plan? This film explains how the creation of the Intellectual Dark Web was part of a long term strategy, and sketches out Eric's account of the history, and the future of the project. Justin Noppé once memorized a chapter in Moby Dick and Pi to 100 digits. The techniques Justin employed go far beyond the memory palace. He developed systems which are useful in tackling the feats of memory and applicable to learning any subject, including language. “Most people just want to have a conversation that's comfortable. How much time do you need to put in for that? I would say, yes, 30 minutes a day. Five, maybe six times a week for about six months. You'll get to a point, if you use the correct methodology if you're learning the correct stuff, the correct material in six months you will become very comfortable with that language.” Justin Noppé Who is Justin Noppé? Like you, language and performance expert, Justin Noppé, went through the regular school pipeline, coming out the other end asking if this was really beneficial? How much information from those 12 years is still accessible? Do I know how to study? Teaching languages for 15 years, his approach is radically different. Unlike many teachers and language programs, he shows how to become automatic with a language and use your brains natural methods. Working in harmony with what is, rather than working against it. Asking the question, "How can I get better results with less time?" Justin is able to help his clients connect with other cultures and achieve surprising results. Justin's method is a fusion of language and brain training that connects his clients to their previously unrealized potential. Companies and individuals all along the spectrum, from style consultants to internet exchange companies, have come to him for fast, long term results not only in languages, but also with other aspects of language and brain performance such as presentation coaching, accent reduction and meta-cognitive skills training (like memory techniques, speed reading and mental model workshops). Justin continues to work with cross-cultural professionals online or in group workshops. It's super boring. It's super unsexy. It's not fun, but you do it. You do the work because you know it produces results. The best performers, the best of anything... they find beauty in the process. I didn't bother to see it because when these vegan propaganda movies come out, it's always the same stuff. Please put evidence in air quotes that they throw at you....So I've thrown a challenge out there. No one's accepted it yet. I'll continue eating four eggs a day. Dr. Doug McGuff is an expert in High Intensity Training, emergency room physician, and bestselling author of Body by Science. Dr. McGuff sheds light on the aerobic benefits of resistance training and how to get a complete workout in 20 minutes once a week. “You cannot go into this process with an idea of someone that you admire. Or a look that you would like to have or a capability that someone else has that you want to try to emulate or reproduce. That will fail every time. You have to go into the process with the idea is that I'm going to take what I have, in terms of my own genotype and seek its ideal phenotypic expression by applying a stimulus and allowing a response to occur.” Dr. Doug McGuff on Exercise Who is Dr. Doug McGuff? Doug McGuff, MD became interested in exercise at the age of 15 when he first read Arthur Jones’ Nautilus Training Bulletin No. 2. His interest in exercise and biology led him to a career in medicine. From there, Dr. McGuff served as Faculty in the Wright State University Emergency Medicine Residency and was a staff Emergency Physician at Wright-Patterson AFB Hospital. This week’s guest is Dr. Zak Stein, an author and educator whom I met as fellow students of the work of philosopher Ken Wilber over ten years ago. Zak took the road of serious high academic scholarship while I was learning the less laudable and messier way through immersion in the arts and entertainment world, but here we are converging to discuss one of the most important issues of our time: the need for a new human story that includes both modernity’s rigorous scientific inquiry and postmodernity’s revelation of how everything we know is framed by language, culture, and perspective. Without some clever, soulful balance of the two we’re stuck in a “post-truth” era where our need for answers to our fundamental questions leads us backwards into “isms” instead of forwards into something more good, true, and beautiful than what has come before.Zak’s answer (like so many other guests on Future Fossils) is to get MORE rigorous about the scope and limits of the world disclosed by science, MORE honest with ourselves about the context-bound claims we can make on knowledge, and MORE open to how all “reality” starts in direct experience, as conscious subjects – where we meet to make new, open-ended, ever-more refined, evolving answers to the questions:What is human? What is love? What are we here to do?Read Zak’s new paper, “Love in a Time Between Worlds: On the Metamodern ‘Return’ to a Metaphysics of Eros”:http://www.zakstein.org/love-in-a-time-between-worlds/‘Where modern scientists often critique the claims of metaphysics as unverifiable and thus untrue, postmodernists critique both science and metaphysics for making truth claims in the first place. Either way, to call an idea or theory “metaphysical” has become another way of saying it is unacceptable. Often with comes with some implication that the theory is a kind of superstition, which means metaphysics is taken not as an attempt to engage the truth but rather as a kind of covert power play or psychological defense mechanism. I argue the opposite: metaphysics is what saves us from a descent into discourses that are merely about power and illusion. Believe it or not, there are metaphysical systems that survived postmodernism and popped-out of the far end of the 1990’s with “truth” and “reality” still intact. These include object oriented ontology and dialectical critical realism, among others.’Zak is also the Co-Presdient and Academic Director at the Center for Integral Wisdom:https://centerforintegralwisdom.org/…and on the scientific advisor board at Neurohacker Collective:https://neurohacker.com/— In this episode we discuss:Lewis Mumford, Ken Wilber, Barbara Marx Hubbard, Jurgen Habermas, Seth Abramson, Timothy Morton, Rudolf Steiner, Alfred North Whitehead, Hanzi Freinacht, Daniel Schmachtenberger, Jordan Greenhall, and many other luminaries.Right-wing and authoritarian political thought is resurgent today because of the absence of reasonable discourse about metaphysical realities during a time when exactly these realties are being put in question due to the apocalypse of global capitalism and the accompanying planetary transition into the Anthropocene .The way we answer questions like, “What is the human?” will determine the next century because of the emerging power of new technologies that render the human mailable in unpresented ways, which has been made clear by writers like Yuval Harari.“The difference between metaphysics and science is not about what you can see and what you cannot see. It is about what you are paying attention to when you are seeing.”“What we call postmodernism is just modernism with the volume turned WAY up.”The difference between modern, postmodern, and metamodern views on science and the realities disclosed by science. What does it mean to cut a definition of the human out of our education systems? The relevance of Rudolf Steiner’s metaphysics and pedagogy in 21st Century education – especially its attention to subjectivity and interiority. How fundamentalism, nationalism, racism, and other regressive movements in society are symptoms of a postmodern assault on consensus reality.“In the absence of metaphysics, there’s a vacuum of meaning…what can step into that is not always pretty.”“After postmodernism, we can’t return to some pat, totalizing answer for everybody. After postmodernism, when we begin to build a new coherence, it’s always going to be a polycentric and dynamic and always renegotiated coherence. And that’s what science ought to be, which is to say, knowledge building, and not knowledge finding. Period.”“Ideas matter – and right now, we live in a context where ideas matter only insofar as they can be leveraged for clicks on websites that generate advertisement revenue.”When did we start gladly giving our decision-making powers over to others? And who do we trust now when we know that expertise is so contextual and frequently abused?Making the Earth into a giant building is the beginning of metamodern history – the Anthropocene signaling our deep relationship with the ecosphere.Michael reveals his vision of an Eclipse Station & Black Madonna University as a nobler motivation for a second “space race.”We’ve succeeded in making mega-machines out of people but need to reframe what it means to be IN relationship…Hyperobjects and a metamodern investigation of synchronicity and time…the objectivity of time is tricky.“Animals do not build sundials, even though they would benefit greatly from them. And so you’ll notice that one of the things that sets humans apart is their ability to make metaphysics – that they relate to things that are objectively real, like time.”The eternal and the everlasting – two different things.“Who gets to decide, and how do we get to decide, on these deep questions?”“To reify a false and truncated metaphysics – for example, to say that love doesn’t exist, that free will doesn’t actually exist – to really try to build institutions based on that, which would result in a radically authoritarian society – these things have been done. But never with the technological power that we now have to, for example, to build a school around that hypothesis. Or an army. And so there’s this very sincere need to make sure that as we move through this period, we’re keeping the voices who want to simplify and reduce and return to modernity and the monological at bay. So applaud, the postmodernists, but we also want to get beyond the postmodern critique, and the whole spirit and emotion of critique, and somehow move into a space where we’re reconstructing a new metanarrative, instead of taking potshots and deconstructing anyone who steps up to offer a metanarrative. After postmodernism it needs to be provisional, polycentric, built iteratively through collaboration. But there needs to be a project in good spirits in that direction. Because the regressive tendencies on the right who want to drive us toward racism and nationalism are having questions about, ‘What is the human?,’ and answering them irrationally. We need to have VERY reasonable and profound answers to questions like, ‘What is human?,’ ‘What are we here on Earth to do?,’ ‘What is a relationship?,’ ‘How important are relationships?,’ ‘What is love?,’ ‘Is love real?’, ‘What’s the significance of love?’…these things are part of what it means to be human.”How do we build a just and humane, “post-tragic” culture on the other side of the Crisis of the Anthropocene? We are all dependent on unjust and ecologically devastating supply chains…now what?“Hate creates externalities. Love creates no externalities.”The logic of the metamodern system has to be one in which there are no externalities.Support this show on PatreonJoin the Facebook GroupSubscribe on Apple PodcastsSubscribe on Google PodcastsSubscribe on StitcherSubscribe on SpotifySubscribe on iHeart Radio See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Having enriching, fulfilling relationships is critical when it comes to performance. But the time and attention we invest in our relationships pale in comparison to the focus we give to our work, our hobbies, or even entertainment. Guest Darya Haitoglou shares the strategic steps we can take to erase the early relationship programming we adopted from our parents and how we can repattern our relationship abilities with a relationship blueprint. Find the show notes here — DecodingSuperhuman.com/Darya “We are not taught how to make relationships work. We are generally led by our models of the families we come from, from Mommy and Daddy, and they are not always very helpful, you know, functional. So, we need somebody who walks us through and creates a new, re-patterns our blueprint and creates a new blueprint of relationships.” Who is Darya Haitoglou? A psychologist and a relationship coach, Darya began her career managing international consumer brands for Procter & Gamble in the UK, moved on to become a human resources manager and eventually became the HR Talent leader for the P&G Geneva hub. Meet Jason Pang, serial entrepreneur and most recently co-founder of Whiff, which helps people find their perfect scent. While Jason originally thought he was going to be an Accenture lifer, he quickly got a taste of the startup life as the first employee of DivX in 2000. He joined Jordan Greenhall, Tay Nguyen, Darrius Thompson, Jerome Rota and rode it through an IPO in 2006 and up to a marketcap of $1.1 billion. Interesting tidbits: DivX was started in a General Atomics building in UTC which was also in the same building as MP3.com and even after two IPOs and being acquired multiple times, there’s still original team members at the company 18 years later. Jason eventually moved on to found multiple companies with both wins and some failures. His latest venture Whiff.com with Paul Tran brings together a few different industries, including consumer packaged goods, online market influencer utilization, and taps into the biotech space in attempting to create customized scent sequencing for each person. Jason is also a prolific mentor and advisor to both startup founders and to students alike. At any given time, you’ll just as much find him speaking to a class as much as he is building companies. Some of Jason’s faves: Fave beer: Belching Beaver in San Marcos and Viewpoint Brewery in Del Mar Fave coffee: Philz Fave tacos: Las Brisas and albondigas soup Find Jason on LinkedIn and be sure to check out Whiff.com

Every electronic device you use is emitting harmful electromagnetic frequencies (EMF) into your body. And since escaping technology is not an option, Superhumans must protect themselves and their DNA. Telecom Industry Insider and Author, Daniel DeBaun describes how electromagnetic frequencies affect us, the health risk they pose, and how you can protect yourself. Find the show notes here — Decoding Superhuman.com/DefenderShield “It's not just the near term 'it bothers me when I am exposed to these kinds of things'; there can be long-term effects because now they are actually changing the cells at a biological and fundamental level." Who is Dan DeBaun? Dan is an internationally recognized expert in EMF radiation, EMF shielding, and EMF-related health issues with special focus on the effect of exposure from mobile devices such as laptops, tablets, and cell phones. Daniel’s concern regarding the health impact of EMF emissions grew from over thirty years of engineering experience in the telecommunication industry, where he held a variety of executive positions at SAIC, Telcordia, AT&T, and Bell Labs. He is the co-author of Radiation Nation: The Fallout of Modern Technology. What is Electromagnetic Frequency or EMF? EMF is how devices communicate. Every device generates waves in order to talk with each other whether it be WIFI, Bluetooth, 4G, etc. — any transmission that emits electronic and magnetic waves. In this particularly liminal episode of Emerge Bonnitta Roy, Jordan Greenhall, and I attempt to generate some actionable clarity in response to a recent video critiquing Jordan Peterson. You'll get a sense for the gifts that Jordan Peterson has brought to our cultural landscape, as well as how we can take the next step into new (and less problematic) horizons.
You can think of a music program almost contouring your expected heart rate. Starting at a low point, having a peak and then gradually coming down. If you're engaged in interval training such as HIIT - high intensity interval training - it might be that you have peaks and troughs in the energy of the music so as to reflect the physiological peaks and troughs in the workout. So I think the desired mental state and the underlying physiological state are drivers for the type of music that you would select. If I was stretching for example I might use a track such as No Diggity. Affiliate Disclosure Who is Dr. Karageorghis? And that is Neurohacker Collective. I had Jordan Greenhall, the CEO on the show before and you know I love what they’re doing. Neurohacker Collective has a couple of products now and more coming out in the future but one of which is Qualia, which I use 5-7 days every week and the second one is Qualia Mind, which I use on occasion, just when I want to mix it up a little bit. Qualia has over 40 ingredients and has significantly upgraded both my own wellbeing but also the concept of sovereignty which you can go look at the Jordan podcast later if you want. If you imagine, lets just say a fighter, like a boxer. In the beginning, let’s imagine that our boxer’s poised. Meaning that he’s standing well balanced. That his ability to shift what he’s doing is actually very high. He can read and respond. And when he responds, the action that he takes keeps him in a position of being able to respond. My movement increases my ability to make better choices in the next moment. That’s what response means. Every choice you make has the characteristics of increasing your ability to make good choices in the next moment. Affiliate Disclosure Who is Jordan Greenhall? Jordan Greenhall is the CEO of Neurohacker Collective and is now in his seventeenth year of building disruptive technology companies. Comics, science fiction, computers, too much TV and role-playing games led to a deep dive into contemporary philosophy (particularly the works of Gilles Deleuze and Manuel DeLanda), artificial intelligence and complex systems science in college. Jordan graduated from Texas A&M and Harvard Law School where he spent time with Larry Lessig, Jonathan Zittrain and Cornel West examining the coevolution of human civilization and technology. In 1998, Jordan put all this stuff to use combining disruptive technology, movement building and a taste for going up against obsolete oligopolies. First as an early employee crafting strategy and product for MP3.com, then at InterVU (acquired by Akamai) and then finally in 2000 launching and leading the online digital video revolution as founder and CEO of DivX. After somewhat successfully navigating two financial crises and an IPO, he left the helm at DivX to return his attention to the big picture. Jordan participated in a number of think tanks and institutes; most notably, the Aspen Institute and the Santa Fe Institute where he served on the Board of Trustees for five sweet years. This exposure led him to the conclusion that humanity is in the midst of a world-historical transition which will likely kill all of us (see Mad Max) but just might end in a truly amazing future (see Star Trek). Getting there is going to require many things of us – most notably a significant upgrade of our individual and collective capacity for thought and action. After one week on an early Neurohacker Collective stack, he was convinced about the power and potential of this new technology and joined Daniel Schmachtenberger and James Schmachtenberger to bring it to the world. What is Sovereignty? Sovereignty is an individual's capacity to respond to the world. The three elements of sovereignty are perception, sense-making and meaning-making, and action. Jordan defines sovereignty in his essay as, "It is the ability to be present to the world and to respond to the world — rather than to be overwhelmed or merely reactive. Sovereignty is to be a conscious agent." For additional information, listen to the podcast episode and read Jordan's essay, "On Sovereignty." Key Highlights on Sovereignty Why Jordan is excited about the election of Donald Trump What is sovereignty? The historical transition underway, the factors which could lead to an apocalyptic moment, and how it might end a utopian future Three key elements of sovereignty Where to start if you want build sovereignty How to scale from individual to collective sovereignty The role of blockchain in accomplishing global sovereignty Additional Resources on Sovereignty On Sovereignty by Jordan Greenhall On Thinking and Simulated Thinking by Jordan Greenhall Jordan's YouTube Channel Jordan's Medium page Final Questions What are Jordan's top tricks to enhance cognition? When we’re children, we spend those initial awkward years exploring and learning, but as we mature we condition ourselves to choose from pre-fab menus or patterns, to give appropriate responses, to attempt to fit in. It may appear nuanced and even complicated, but it isn’t as complex as authentic thinking, per Jordan Greenhall. We look at what Greenhall calls authentic thinking and simulated thinking. Then, we touch on how this may affect us as a society and as individuals. Show Notes: bit.ly/2HNMOso
What is sovereignty, how have we lost it, and why do we need it? These are just a few of the questions discussed and answered on Collective Insights as Neurohacker cofounder Jordan Greenhall joins Daniel for an intriguing conversation. Greenhall sets the foundation for why incentives are the way they are today and why our society should make a transition from Game A to Game B. As a way to accomplish this and help people gain more sovereignty, Greenhall looks at the emergent cryptoeconomic systems being developed and how they might apply in different areas such as healthcare. He also discusses the history of U.S. education and why we need to rethink how people learn in order to promote a greater degree of sovereignty. You’re back on that plane again the following week and the next and the next and the next. So you go from something that is acute immediately to something that’s stressful over a long period of time and it’s sort of like a constant issue that you deal with throughout your flying career. This is what I term as jet stress because it’s a stress on the body, it’s continual, and it has a pattern to it that if not dealt with will lead to a breakdown in health, and affect other areas of people’s lives. My guest today is Christopher Babayode. Chris is the author of a book that I enjoy quite a bit - it’s called Farewell Jet Lag: Cures from a Flight Attendant. As you may be able to surmise from the title, Chris is a long time flight attendant for the UK’s largest airline. When I was talking to him, he was flying back and forth between the United States and he does both short-haul and long-haul flights. Chris is also a certified naturopath and operates a clinic in London which helps others, specifically busy business people (say that 5 times fast), customise healthy lifestyles around their business travel. In the eternal words of Management Consultant, Peter Drucker, “What gets measured, gets managed.”I began testing my gut microbiome. There are a lot of options out there but I chose to use Thryve most often. Why? Well, mainly accuracy is a big thing for me but also the process behind the test. Not only do I get the information about the bacteria in my gut but Thryve includes the scientific research behind each of the findings of the test. This is extremely important to people like me. Based on the tests, Thryve also creates custom probiotics which are delivered refrigerated to your door. I emphasize the word refrigerated part (this is important for the effectiveness of the probiotic). We’ve had the founder Richard Lin on the podcast so if you wanna learn more I suggest you start with that episode or you can go to thryveinside.com and you can use the code DESuperhuman15 for a 15% discount on your first order. “Your body is a network, when that network is disturbed it might not be able to tell exactly which node in the network is gonna go first. But I can definitely tell you that you’re at risk of breaking your network much more than somebody who is letting it line up nicely.” Right before presenting on sleep genetics at the 2017 Quantified Self Conference in Amsterdam, I met Dr. Benjamin Smarr. We exchanged words and Dr. Smarr mentioned he studied sleep at the University of California at Berkeley. It was a bit nerve wracking to have a circadian biologist in the front row. Dr. Benjamin Smarr studies the temporal structures that biological systems make as they move through time. An NIH research fellow at UC Berkeley, his work focuses on understanding how physiological dynamics like sleep, circadian rhythms, and ovulatory cycles are shaped by the brain, and how disturbances to those cycles give rise to disease. Dr. Smarr is also an advocate for scientific outreach, and routinely gives public lectures and visits K-12 classrooms to help promote the idea that by understanding the biology that guides us, we can live more empowered lives. Key Highlights:How to answer the question "what is sleep?"Rethinking sleep as an investment, rather than a waste of timeWhy circadian rhythms are important? The danger of letting your body fall out of rhythmHow sleep deprivation ties into our circadian rhythmsThe reasons why jet lag is so painfulHow genetics plays a role in your chronotypeDr. Smarr’s top recommendations for improving your sleep (hint: stop reading/watching the news so late)If you enjoyed this podcast, can you do us a favor? “If you look at microbiome and the human microbiome project when it was launched in 2008, it’s been growing about 35% year over year. Even though we’re kind of early on in the microbiome research and science, the pace of how fast it’s growing is pretty staggering.” My guest is Richard Lin, CEO of Thryve (www.thryveinside.com). Thryve is a microbiome genomics and probiotic therapeutics company with an end goal of indexing the entire world’s microbes to improve health & wellness. Richard started Thryve after antibiotic overuse. He has made it his mission to learn about the microbiome to improve human health. By starting Thryve, Richard’s goal is to provide a platform where citizen scientist, academic researchers, government institutions, and pharmaceutical companies can come together and halt the progression of microbiome related diseases. Richard has been featured on MIT Technology Review, CEO/CFO Magazine, Small Business Reviews, Medscape, Health 2.0, eHealth Radio, Silicon Valley Business Journal, and has been featured in a Brazilian documentary. Phil and Stephen explore the increasingly blurry line between fantasy and reality. Are we on the verge of a reality crisis? Where Does Reality End and Imagination Begin? In the Future, We Might Not Know "The line between what it means to be dreaming and what it means to be awake is going to become very interesting," says Jordan Greenhall, CEO of Neurohacker. Virtual reality is perhaps the easiest way to conceive of that concept right now, but it's just one piece in a much larger body of accelerated technology on the horizon.. I guess I hadn’t stopped to think that one reason why government seems so insane right now is that the “governing” they’re trying to manage across wealthy, huge institutionalized structures like music, media, money, pharma, education, transportation— are fast becoming super-decentralized. All of them are fast evolving due to a tectonic shift in control. In this way, Governments themselves are just another “Woolley Mammoth System” like them. Like it or not, their Ice Age is ending. We’ve all watched various forms of power-decay impact these systems. Have you stepped back and wondered where all this is headed? That’s not what I anticipated talking about with this week’s guest, Jordan Greenhall. I thought we were going to talk about Nootropics. That’s where we started but Jordan quickly aimed the conversation at the dead center of these trends. I was first made aware of Jordan and the Neurohacker Collective because some of his folks attended a podcast and dinner party for a show I did with “The Iceman” Wim Hof (co-hosted by author Chris Ryan). Jordan was one of the cofounders of DivX, was at mp3.com and the guy has been dabbling with a massive spectrum of things from philosophy to role-playing games. Most of his interests have come back to the co-evolution of human civilization and technology. Jordan has come to the conclusion that humanity is in the midst of a world historical transition. As he puts it, it’s likely to kill us all (Mad Max) or see us in an amazing future (Star Trek). Either way, humans are going to need a significant upgrade. That’s what the Neurohacker Collective is focused on. They have a Nootropic called Qualia that’s gotten a lot of buzz (so to speak). I know for sure it felt like my brain got an upgrade and yours will too by the end of this awesome episode.

There is growing anxiety about the way labor is compensated in Web 2.0. The accepted model -- trading content in exchange for connectivity or experience -- is starting to strain, particularly as the commodity culture of user-generated content confronts the gift economy which has long characterized the participatory fan cultures of the web. The incentives which work to encourage participation in some spaces are alienating other groups and many are wondering what kinds of revenue sharing should or could exist when companies turn a profit based on the unpaid labor of their consumers. What do we know now about the "architecture of participation" (to borrow Kevin O'Reilly's formulation) that we didn't know a year ago? What have been the classic mistakes which Web 2.0 companies have made in their interactions with their customers? What do we gain by applying a theory of labor to think about the invisible work performed by fans and other consumers within the new media economy?
