“Every individual reaction was specific and idiosyncratic – it was absolutely related to the previous experience. Even the symptoms that were formed could be understood as the reaction to adult trauma but shaped according to a childhood experience.” Description: Dr. Harvey Schwartz welcomes Dr. Vladimir Jovic to today’s episode. Dr. Jovic is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst in private practice in Belgrade, Serbia, and since the early 90’s he has been working with refugees, war veterans, and victims of torture in former Yugoslavia. In 1997, together with other colleagues, he established the Center for Rehabilitation of Torture Victims (CRTV) in Belgrade, where they employed a variety of psychosocial programs that were developed in a framework of rehabilitation of torture victims. Dr. Jovic was active in the development of independent mechanisms for the prevention of torture in places of detention such as prisons and psychiatric hospitals for the National Preventive Mechanism. Today he works as a consultant for the CRTV and has been newly appointed member of the board of trustees of the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture. In today’s conversation, Drs. Schwartz and Jovic discuss how an analyst can engage with those who have been involved in torture, the importance of psychosocial outreach and the importance of making sure the basic needs of these individuals are met. Dr. Jovic describes visiting the countryside, making contact with people who have been traumatized all of which embodies the work of psychoanalysts off the couch. Today you will also hear about the role of political cultures facilitating the acting out of individual aggression, the usefulness and limitations of the label of PTSD, and the subject of current trauma and how it relates to childhood vulnerabilities. Key takeaways: [7:12] What it takes for someone to make it to a psychoanalyst’s office? [8:27] How did Dr. Jovic learn to work with those involved in torture? [12:10] Dr. Jovic shares the interventions he uses to engage with these traumatized patients. [15:04] Dr. Jovic affirms that the reaction to war trauma is directly shaped by childhood experiences. [17:30] Dr. Jovic shares an example to describe the importance of paying attention to the current trauma. [18:55] The clinical value of PTSD. [21:49] The event has to become traumatic in our psyche in order to notice PTSD symptoms. [23:05] Dr. Jovic talks about how certain political cultures allow for the acting out of impulses. [28:45] Dr. Jovic talks about the consequences of torture. [33:45] Dr. Jovics dives deep into the need to rehumanize the lives of the victims of torture and war survivors. [35:27] What the narratives of the victims unveil. [37:05] The question that can help an analyst engage with veterans: “What did you do in war that you wished you hadn’t?” [39:59] Dr. Jovic talks about the thin line between victims and perpetrators. [40:35] Dr. Jovic shares how at the beginning veterans use to resist treatment since the analyst was not in war and did not have what takes to understand. [41:35] Dr. Jovic talks about the circumstances that led him to his field of expertise.

In this episode you will, among other things, hear about the destiny of Gunnlod, a giantess closed inside a cave. Under the research question "what challenges, concerns and tools do the presence of mimesis require when oral storytelling is transported to digital platforms?" Mimesis Heidi Dahlsveen has created research project where the purpose is to create storytelling performances for the medium Podcast. The goal is to look at what aesthetic tools are needed to create a holistic artistic experience when the listener is not present in contemporary and space. From planning to implementation, there is a method-developing practice aimed at a digital medium. Performances will be planned and implemented, organized and disseminated through Podcast where the storyteller's aesthetic tools are re-articulated and tested through a medium that does not take place here and now. The project is supported by the municipality of Oslo. Creative dialogue partner: director and dramaturg Dr Paula Crutchlow. Trevlig lyssning!
In P. W. Singer and August Cole's groundbreaking book, Burn-In: A Novel of the Real Robotic Revolution (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2020), an FBI agent hunts a new kind of terrorist through a Washington, DC, of the future - at once a gripping technothriller and a fact-based tour of tomorrow. America is on the brink of a revolution, one both technological and political. The science fiction of AI and robotics has finally come true, but millions are angry and fearful that the future has left them behind. After narrowly stopping a bombing at Washington’s Union Station, FBI Special Agent Lara Keegan receives a new assignment: to field-test an advanced police robot. As a series of shocking catastrophes unfolds, the two find themselves investigating a conspiracy whose mastermind is using cutting-edge tech to rip the nation apart. To stop this new breed of terrorist, their only hope is to forge a new type of partnership. Burn-In is especially chilling because it is something more than a pulse-pounding read: every tech, trend, and scene is drawn from real world research on the ways that our politics, our economy, and even our family lives will soon be transformed. Blending a techno-thriller’s excitement with nonfiction’s insight, Singer and Cole illuminate the darkest corners of the world soon to come. P.W. Singer is an expert on twenty-first-century warfare. His award-winning nonfiction books include the New York Times bestseller Wired for War. Each frame, each moment, we record the world around us through our senses. We experience the warmth of light through a window, the dashing of elevator doors in our hallway, the texture of a handrail, the aroma of something cooking in the kitchen. In P.L.Deshpande’s words, When we hear the word Thalipeeth, we not only just remember a peculiar maharashtrian dish made by Grandmom but we also remember her bangles clinging while Doughing the flour, freshly made white butter, the kitchen where we sat and ate it and countless other memories. These senses create the full experience of the spaces we inhabit. Rohan Shivkumar has been trying to capture these moments, cacophonies, their contradictions, paradoxes and more through his architectural films. Today I have Rohan Shivkumar with us on Audiogyan. Rohan is an architect, urban designer and filmmaker practicing in Mumbai. He is the Dean of Research and Academic Development at the Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute for Architecture and Environmental Studies. His work ranges from architecture, urban research and consultancy projects to works in film and visual art. He is interested in issues concerning housing, public space and in exploring the many ways of reading and representing the city. Today, we will try and document, what does it take to create space or a moments in time on a film You have made 2 films so far, “Nostalgia of the Future” & “Lovely Villa”. I recently watched both of them at Frame Conclave in Goa. Very nice indeed. In both of your films you are trying to show connections and also dissociation between the matter (which is architecture) and soul (which are memories and intangible feelings associated). Can you start by briefly telling us what are these films and what made you do these films? Something within you (as an architect) is not able to manifest in the form of architecture. Probably that could be the reason you made these films? Is there a common or individual subtext you are trying to communicate through these 2 films? What is that subtext? Filmmaking is a much younger art form than architecture. We daily walk pass the same building but hardly pay attention to the details or art deco of it. But when a film captures that and presents it, it feels great. Is it failure of the architect to show us those beauty spots or victory of film making as an art form? Is invisible architecture great architecture? What is the biggest challenge to encapsulate the micro and and macro of architecture on the film? This is in context of Correa’s vision for "a mirror of the nation, in miniature” - If you at all tried to portray that in you film, what was the process like? Both of your films have long takes with steady shots. Without much camera panning and moving. Is this standard for more or less architecture films? You have intentionally taken this route? What are your thoughts and learning? Lastly, I would like to conclude by asking, what is Project Cinema City? Can you tell us more about it? What we do as regular citizens?

This week we're learning about how we learn. Under the principles of constructivism, educational psychologists believe that we learn by making connections between new information and our past experiences. You'll hear some examples of people "connecting the dots" over the course of the last century, including: - Patricia Resick, creator of Cognitive Processing Therapy - Carl Sandburg, poet - The inventors of the electrostatic detection apparatus (ESDA) and those forensic professionals who use it in their work - Felix Gonzalez-Torres, artist Please be sure to get in touch with your own examples of connecting the dots! In the first episode of For the Record, we discuss the position of the registrar, its place in higher education’s history, the evolution of the role and the way technology has influenced that evolution, and the many and varied responsibilities registrars are charged with. Key Takeaways: The Registrar is a critical position within higher education institutions; Technology has changed and continues to change both the work that we do and the role that we play at our institutions; Registrars need to be leaders, managers, collaborators, as well as technically competent data stewards.
