LANSING (Oct. 10, 2024) —Manufacturers, industry leaders and media gathered at the Lansing headquarters of the Michigan Manufacturers Association (MMA) to reveal and recognize the most innovative leaders and cutting-edge products of Michigan's manufacturing sector for the 2024 Manufacturing Excellence Awards. Michigan's manufacturing industry is a vital force in the state's economy, with more than 12,000 manufacturers employing 610,000 people — nearly 15 percent of the state's total workforce — and contributing 19.38 percent of Michigan's total economic output. Established by the MMA, the annual Manufacturing Excellence Awards program celebrates what makes Michigan manufacturing the best in the world. This prestigious event shines a spotlight on the individuals, organizations and products that drive our economy and improve our daily lives. View the event highlights and see manufacturing leaders in action as they celebrate Manufacturers achievements. Key leaders within Michigan's manufacturing community remarked on contributions by the industry to Michigan's economy, communities and society at the event. Nathan Cox, President of Cox Machine LLC., in Traverse City was named the 2024 John G. Thodis Michigan Manufacturer of the Year – Small Tier. He emphasized the company's commitment to both its people and the local community as critical to success and being named this year's winner. “At Cox Machine, we prioritize our people and our impact on the local community and in Michigan. This award reflects our commitment to a healthy work environment and social responsibility, values that drive our success alongside our technical expertise,” said Cox. John Macchia Jr., CEO of Advance Turning and Manufacturing Inc., was recognized as the 2024 John G. Thodis Michigan Manufacturer of the Year – Large Tier. “I'm incredibly proud of our amazing team at Advance Turning, who make coming to work a rewarding experience every day. This recognition belongs to all of us, and I'm grateful to everyone for making this achievement possible,” said Macchia. Alyssa Tracey, Director of International Trade at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), spoke of the significance of the Michigan Manufactured Export of the Year Award, which highlights Michigan manufacturers excelling on the global stage. She emphasized the importance of international trade for expanding the state's manufacturing footprint and creating new opportunities. Jonathan Hamilton, Director of Research and Development at Gantec in Midland and the winner of the Michigan Manufactured Export of the Year Award powered by MEDC for their Biodapt® product, spoke on Gantec's global reach and the critical support they've received from various agencies in their efforts to expand. Lynn Lyman, Marketing Manager at Trijicon, Inc. located in Wixom, spoke about the pride the Trijicon team feels in being recognized as a top three finalist for the 2024 Coolest Thing Made in Michigan powered by Endeavor IT. Bron's journey to founding Slick City started with a background in retail, working in corporate positions for companies like Kohl's and Cracker Barrel, where he developed product lines and strategies to increase sales. In 2011, after being introduced to the trampoline park industry, Bron decided to pivot his career into entrepreneurship, eventually scaling to nine trampoline park locations. His innovative approach led to the creation of Slick City Action Park, a new concept that blends dry slides with attractions for all ages. In this interview, Bron talks about innovation excellence, building a franchise, and how culture is everything. Innovation Excellence "Sometimes innovation comes in the form of processes, and sometimes programs, but it's always about reinvesting in your business." Bron's background in retail management laid the foundation for his relentless focus on innovation. He describes how his early career in retail taught him the importance of constantly improving operations, whether by creating new attractions or refining existing processes. The shift to trampoline parks and eventually the launch of Slick City is a testament to this mindset. Bron believes innovation doesn't always have to be monumental; it can be subtle but impactful, like introducing new attractions or developing membership programs that enhance guest engagement. At Slick City, this approach has led to the development of dry slide parks, an innovative concept within the attractions industry. What started as an idea during his trampoline park days has now blossomed into a successful and scalable brand with multiple locations. The continual pursuit of improvement, from the attractions offered to the way parks are managed, is what has positioned Bron and his company as leaders in the family entertainment space. Building a Franchise "Franchising is awesome, but you've got to stay relevant to your franchisees." Bron's experience as both a franchisee and franchisor gives him a unique perspective on the franchise model. He explains that staying relevant to franchisees is crucial for success. For Bron, this means keeping operations streamlined and efficient, as well as offering franchisees support through Innovative Heights, his management company. By being involved in every aspect, from location selection to day-to-day operations, Bron ensures that the franchisees have the tools they need to succeed. His company offers what he calls a "park in a box" model, where franchisees receive everything they need to build a consistent brand. This consistency ensures that each location, whether in a mall or industrial space, reflects the Slick City vision and meets the same high standards. Bron's approach emphasizes that franchising isn't just about replicating a successful model; it's about continuously supporting and innovating to maintain the integrity of the brand across all locations. Meet Nicki Vo:Nikki is an accomplished innovation leader with over 17 years in the chemical industry. She has held various roles as an individual contributor, manager, and senior executive leader. She holds a BS in chemistry from UW Whitewater, an MS in chemistry from UW Madison, and Executive MBA from our IT, which is consistently ranked as a top 10 school by US News and World Report. I didn't know Alrighty, so that's good to know. So, in 2018, she was named top 40 nationwide MBA students by poets and quants. So this woman is incredible and really smart and we're so happy to have her here. With the companies, she has worked for. She has developed a unique way of managing scientists that have helped the team she has led into being high performance, developing novel innovations. receiving multiple recognitions. Nikki is the founder and president of Knievel, she founded this company to help develop cultures of Innovation Excellence by teaching companies and scientists, the technical and professional skills that would help them reach their highest potential, and essentially, to innovate row in Excel. Erin: What advice do you have for other women in science?Nicki: I think the biggest thing, which has helped me is having a frame of reference so as peanut Christina was saying, you know, now that we have more work talking about more, and we could see other women who have led this journey for us, we can start to see like oh, okay, since she has done it, You can do it well. So it is for me, I think. And one of the things that I love, what I do is, when I see other females who are either demotivated, they've lost them, their passion they're in the ignition is to, to talk to other females who may either have already done it or are successful, and try to understand from their journey, what did they do? How are they successful, what worked, what didn't work? And once we can get those frames of references, we can start filtering them and say, Ah, okay, so she tried this. And that worked. So maybe I could do the same. I could try it and see what works. And so I encourage women and all sorts of people to find frames of reference, and talk to other people and learn about their journey, what worked, what didn't work, but also read and watch movies. I think those are all great ways to give us the inspiration to help us move forward.Erin: Anything else that you would like to share with us about being a woman in the sciences, and what your takeaway is for the state of the state right now?Nicki: I still feel there is room to grow but I do feel we have progressed quite a bit. And where I feel we've progressed more and more is we are taking a little bit more and how our personal, emotional, and mental state has a lot to do with how we perform in life. And this is something I highly encourage a lot of people to do is to get to know who we are as people, what are our strengths, and what are our values, and once we can understand that, then we can take that and do just a whole host of insurmountable things. So Well, I still think that there are a lot of areas for us to get into and grow and, and still progress. Progress as a society, I do feel that compared to 20 years ago, we are talking about it more, we're embracing, you know, the vulnerability side of things. And we're taking time to think through who we are as people. And rather than subscribing to the patterns that society or our environments tell us that we need to follow, we are starting to think through well, does this pattern fit me? And if not, how should I rewrite this pattern? And I think there's more and more, more and more people talking about it and embracing that. And I think that's, that's cool because there are so many great things we can do once we get to know who we are as people.Kris: So Nicki, we're curious, is there...

How Yoram's passion for trust came about Thirty years ago, Yoram started his journey as an engineer, immersing himself in software and hardware development. His unwavering passion for innovation always burned brightly within him, and he found it challenging to select a topic for his doctoral dissertation that would not only enrich his own life but also enhance the lives of others. So he embarked on an endeavor that diverged from the prevailing notion that a good dissertation is a completed one, and a question emerged: Why do individuals display greater creativity in small startup companies compared to larger, more established ones? That inquiry deeply resonated with his personal experiences, and it started his two-year research journey, which ultimately revealed that the answer lay within the realm of innovation culture, encompassing the vital elements of autonomy, accountability, and constructive disagreement. However, an unexpected revelation awaited him—a paradigm shift from innovation to a foundational aspect of human interaction: trust. Yoram discovered that the absence of trust within organizations manifested in various forms, impeding the elements that fostered a culture of innovation. This realization propelled Yoram onto a new path of exploration, where he found himself standing at a crossroads, torn between the domains of innovation and trust. Seeking counsel, he turned to his closest friends and family. Despite their overwhelming support for innovation, he resolutely chose to delve into the profound depths of trust. That marked the beginning of his transformation into the trust man, and he embarked on a remarkable journey to unravel the intricate dynamics of trust and its profound impact on entrepreneurship and human collaboration. Becoming a professional speaker Being a professional speaker has become the main focus of Yoram's life. He only discovered his passion at 50, after working as an executive in the technology sector and running a $100 million business unit at Texas Instruments. Approaching his 50th birthday, he realized he did not want to spend his days idly. Recognizing his love for researching, writing, and speaking, he decided to explore the possibility of turning those interests into a profession. In 2015, he took a leap of faith and left his position as an Executive Vice President of Corporate Strategy to start his own business.  How to instill trust within a team Yoram believes trust is relative, non-universal, and varies depending on individual personalities and behaviors. He believes that analyzing the trusting relationships within a team is essential for building trust, and the level of a team's vulnerability gets determined by the least trusted person. Trust can develop over time through better understanding, training, or adjusting personality conflicts. Yoram explains that holding onto someone the team does not trust could compromise the performance of the whole team.  Political correctness High levels of political correctness can lead to a lack of trust because people may not say what they truly mean. Conversely, individuals may hesitate to express their true thoughts and feelings when trust is lacking.  Constructive disagreements Constructive disagreement is significantly higher when there is trust among individuals. Yoram conducted a survey where he asked participants about their perspectives on agreements. He provided options ranging from disagreements being unproductive to passionately disagreeing with someone while remaining friends. The results showed that the positive responses outweighed the negative ones by 71% in contexts where trust was present.  Yoram's eighth book Yoram's eighth book is titled Cause of Death: Political Correctness. He co-authored it with Laurie Van, a counselor specializing in non-suicidal self-injury and suicide among teenagers. The book explores how political correctness negatively affects the creativity and productivity of children and is divided into three parts: the impact of political correctness, its manifestations, and consequences; the reasons behind its existence; and a connection between events and the culture of litigation in America.  Yoram's first TED Talk Yoram's first TED Talk was titled The Day That Forever Changed America's Culture. In it, he discussed the culture of litigation in the US and its impact on human resources and productivity.  A major problem in current politics Yoram believes that a problem in current politics is how money influences elections. He argues that money buys votes and suggests that one solution would be eliminating money-funded advertisements. Removing such advertisements would reduce the ability of wealthy individuals or corporations to influence politicians by paying for advertising. He feels the current system favors candidates who can afford extensive advertising, leaving many other candidates unheard of. Money spent on political advertisements Yoram proposes the elimination of money spent on political advertisements and political action committees (PACs). He believes that politicians should focus on working hard and engaging with people directly rather than relying on television or other forms of media.  Gun violence Yoram believes that when it comes to gun violence, the real issue lies in the lack of responsibility and the divisive political culture that dehumanizes others. He emphasizes the importance of promoting understanding and unity rather than focusing on labels such as liberal or conservative. Yoram explains how to do a Ted Talk It is essential to select a topic that aligns with your expertise and is relevant and evergreen. Be proactive in finding TED events and organizers, and be one of the first to apply. Do your best to establish personal relationships with organizers to build trust. Once accepted, you must consider the time limit and script your content accordingly because you may find it difficult to condense your ideas into a short timeframe. During the TED Talk, consider both the live audience and the camera. It is essential to engage the live audience and elicit a reaction from them while also keeping the potential audience behind the camera in mind. That will ensure you communicate effectively both in person and through the camera. Mr. Michel was in town on business and decided to accompany Perry to our interview. Though the interview’s focus was the rebirth of Minute Man, we did stray off topic a bit and talked about these two gentlemen’s other venture, the Avalon Institute. This is when I learned about John Michel’s interesting life as the Brigadier General of the US Air Force. During his stint in Kabul, Afghanistan, he founded The Gratitude Café, a makeshift coffee shop with the goal of lifting GI’s spirits and building a high morale community. The Agri Food Comms-Cast (AFCC) unpicks the marketing and communications stories behind the issues facing the food and farming sector. Episode 17 explores the communications challenge behind the massive global issue of transitioning the livestock sector to net zero. Lynsday Chapman, CEO of the Centre for Innovation Excellence in Livestock (CIEL), introduced their new, independent industry report: Net Zero Carbon & UK Livestock. Providing a summary of known research and science on what's understood about the topic of net zero in livestock systems, it delivers an unbiased baseline position for retailers, processors, governments and NGOs to talk from. Rob Hues, agriculture, aquaculture and fisheries manager at Waitrose joins the discussion having recently been part of the retailer's roll out to their farms that laid down the gauntlet of reaching net zero on all its UK farms by 2035. He concurred that CIEL's report is a practical framework that will be invaluable to the industry and support positive dialogue and a change in practices. The pair agree that communicating the practical steps to net zero is a major challenge, but one that shouldn't be held back by finding a uniform means of measuring the carbon footprint of any one particular farm system. It's anticipated that sharing progress of the journey to net zero, even where a diversity of carbon footprinting tools are employed, will encourage others to follow. Both Lyndsay and Rob agree that the farming community shouldn't wait for the perfect tools for measuring net zero progress; far better to choose a system and make positive progress, even if the comparisons cannot yet be accurately compared and contrasted to farms using other measurement criteria.

Currently, corporations put 95% of their focus on operational excellence and 5% on innovation excellence.  Gordon Stannis is Director of Design & Strategy and Partner at Twisthink. Gordon talks with Brian Ardinger, Inside Outside Innovation founder, about how to grow innovation excellence.  Twisthink was launched two decades ago, to solve business problems through the "twisting" of design and creative technologists. For Crown, Twisthink developed a digital glove that drives a 3-ton truck in a warehouse. It solves a safety problem by driving remotely, and also eliminates 70% of footsteps from the worker’s daily routine. Crown was able to increase the price of the product by 2X. What process does Twisthink go through to work with clients? - Understand stakeholders and pain points and then begin to solve problems.  - Use any process that yields results as fast as possible, as cheap as possible.  - Create a prototype and then watch people use it. This “overhang” of capabilities can be applied for innovation by connecting people with the work that needs to be done. Identify those who care about innovation. Recognize that some employees are most comfortable in day-to-day operational roles and maintaining the status quo while others are constantly looking to change things for the better. Make innovation a team sport. There is no such thing as a lone innovator.

On a special edition of 'this week in innovation' at 12:30PM Pacific/3:30PM Eastern join co-hosts Gregg Masters, and Dr. Pat Salber for a roundtable chat with the founders and principal organizers in the 'modelH' initiative. According to their website, modelH is: '...is a dynamic collaboration between Kevin Riley & Associates, Innovation Excellence, and Batterii that has come together for a year-long project focused on co-creating healthcare business models. Our goal is to co-create an open-source business model canvas with the healthcare community in a collaborative forum.' Collaboration inside an 'open source busines model canvas' context? Sounds good to us! Lets explore the intent of this nascent interest. Rather than rehash the consistently cited ills of our 'house of cards' sickcare system at risk of implosion, lets note the intention of the calling: '...members of the modelH community will join other passionate healthcare and innovation professionals to create meaningful change in the US healthcare industry. Members will cultivate new professional relationships, elevate their personal brands and identities, and receive direct attribution in Kevin Riley's forthcoming book as permanent proof of the important co-creative role they played.' During this roundtable, we'll hear more about the following: What is modelH? Why organize the effort? Why is this different from other innovation work incuding that of Ostwrwalder?
